  1. 0:00When you own a Tesla, you're going to be
  2. 0:02sitting around sometimes. Sometimes by
  3. 0:04choice. Sometimes you don't have a
  4. 0:06choice whether you're charging or you're
  5. 0:08waiting on somebody. But often times, if
  6. 0:11you're like me, you want to get some
  7. 0:12work done. And that's when a laptop
  8. 0:15comes into play. And it is pretty
  9. 0:17convenient to pull a laptop out, set it
  10. 0:20here on the center console, and get some
  11. 0:23work done. And you know what? That's
  12. 0:25okay for a little while. Uh, but if you
  13. 0:28want to get any real work done, well,
  14. 0:30this isn't exactly the best setup. Well,
  15. 0:33the next best thing would be to pop over
  16. 0:35here into the passenger side because I
  17. 0:37don't have the steering wheel and I can
  18. 0:39sit here and I can do my thing. And, you
  19. 0:42know, that works out pretty well, too.
  20. 0:44But, I would say the ergonomics isn't
  21. 0:46the best. But, I'm sitting in a massive
  22. 0:51computer right now, and I've got this
  23. 0:52large screen here for my Tesla. Wouldn't
  24. 0:55it be nice to take advantage of all of
  25. 0:58that? Well, I have what I think is the
  26. 1:01ultimate office setup. And it looks like
  27. 1:05this. This This is my ultimate office
  28. 1:09setup. Laptop, keyboard, mouse, iPad,
  29. 1:13and I'm taking advantage of the large
  30. 1:16Tesla screen as a swivel extended
  31. 1:19display. And oh yeah, this desk, this
  32. 1:23desk comes from something that's already
  33. 1:25built into your car. But I'm getting
  34. 1:27ahead of myself because we should
  35. 1:29actually rewind a little bit and show
  36. 1:31what I did and how you do it. Now, to
  37. 1:34get started with this ultimate office
  38. 1:36setup, we have to start with the desk
  39. 1:38surface itself. And in order to do that,
  40. 1:42got to use something. Well, as it turns
  41. 1:44out, every Tesla Model Y and probably
  42. 1:47Model 3 has exactly what you need, and
  43. 1:50it's located in the back of the car.
  44. 1:52This here is the back lower trunk cover
  45. 1:56for my Tesla Model Y, and it's exactly
  46. 1:59what I need. It's got the nice soft
  47. 2:01carpet on both sides. What you want to
  48. 2:03do is you want to take this, I flip it
  49. 2:05upside down, so I've got this little
  50. 2:07desk curve here, and I'm going to
  51. 2:09position it
  52. 2:11right here.
  53. 2:13in the car. It wedges itself underneath
  54. 2:16the steering wheel. It fits up real nice
  55. 2:18against the glove box, sits on the
  56. 2:21center console, and I've got a desk.
  57. 2:24I've got a perfectly workable desk here,
  58. 2:27and even better, I can get out of the
  59. 2:29car, and it doesn't rely on me at all.
  60. 2:32It's all freestanding. So, here we have
  61. 2:35the laptop on our desk. It's nice and
  62. 2:37firm. It's not being supported by me
  63. 2:39whatsoever. It's at a good height for
  64. 2:41where I'm sitting. Go ahead and pull in
  65. 2:43a wireless keyboard and mouse. And now
  66. 2:47I've got a workstation that I can use
  67. 2:50for a period of time in relative comfort
  68. 2:54and have the screen. But we have this
  69. 2:57screen over here. Wouldn't it be nice to
  70. 2:59use it? It turns out you can. Let me
  71. 3:02show you. But before I show you the
  72. 3:05software that I use to link this up, and
  73. 3:07this is optional. I have a swivel screen
  74. 3:10and it allows me to swivel the screen
  75. 3:11and point it toward me a little bit
  76. 3:13which makes it an even better second
  77. 3:15display. But how do I get my computer
  78. 3:18over here? Well, that requires an app
  79. 3:21called Side Display. In order to get
  80. 3:24Side Display to work, you have to jump
  81. 3:26through a couple of hoops because of
  82. 3:28some limitation of the Tesla. First off
  83. 3:29is that you need to tether
  84. 3:33your laptop to a phone to get an
  85. 3:36internet connection. And we do have
  86. 3:39Starlink in this car and I'll talk about
  87. 3:41that in a little bit, but there are some
  88. 3:42limitations in order to get it to work
  89. 3:44for this particular setup. But let me
  90. 3:46just say we want to tether here to the
  91. 3:48phone. And then we want to basically
  92. 3:51turn my Mac into a personal hotspot and
  93. 3:55share this connection for my phone to
  94. 3:59the Wi-Fi. And that is what the car is
  95. 4:01going to connect to. The next step of
  96. 4:03the process, I want to come over here to
  97. 4:05my car and select Wi-Fi. And I'm going
  98. 4:08to select my MacBook here. And we are
  99. 4:11connected to my MacBook. We're next
  100. 4:13going to start the Side Display app and
  101. 4:15we're going to go ahead and start our
  102. 4:16session. I already have it all set up.
  103. 4:18The website does a pretty good job of
  104. 4:20walking you through what you need to do.
  105. 4:22So, what you got to do is you got to go
  106. 4:24to the browser on your Tesla, type in
  107. 4:26the IP address or the address listed on
  108. 4:29the side display here. And then it'll
  109. 4:32ask you whether or not you want to set
  110. 4:34up a mirror or an extend. In this case,
  111. 4:36I want to extend. And after that, you've
  112. 4:38got a desktop over here. And it's pretty
  113. 4:41cool. See here, I've got both displays.
  114. 4:43And just to show you, I can take this
  115. 4:46window here
  116. 4:48and drag it over here. So, if I want to
  117. 4:52pull up a document or an Excel
  118. 4:54spreadsheet or whatever, I can even play
  119. 4:57a video over here. I just want to show
  120. 4:59you how responsive this is. Let's just
  121. 5:00go to YouTube real quick. All right. So,
  122. 5:02we have YouTube here. And you can see
  123. 5:04that this is not the YouTube app because
  124. 5:05I can just go ahead and drag this icon
  125. 5:08over. And you might be wondering how
  126. 5:10responsive it is. It is a little laggy.
  127. 5:13So, let's just pull up a random video
  128. 5:15here from, you know, I don't know,
  129. 5:16nobody in particular. And I can show you
  130. 5:19that I can actually play a video.
  131. 5:20>> We go.
  132. 5:22>> All right. Here we go. Lefthand turn
  133. 5:26features that are coming out
  134. 5:29>> um separate
  135. 5:31>> that there's basically no lag between
  136. 5:33sound and video. So, it's perfectly
  137. 5:34normal to play a video over here. If you
  138. 5:37want to continue kicking things up a
  139. 5:39notch, you can go ahead and put it
  140. 5:40something like an iPad right up there so
  141. 5:42I can watch my X feed. I've got my
  142. 5:45laptop. I've got my screen. I've got my
  143. 5:47keyboard and mouse. I have my phone and
  144. 5:50my have my iPad. And it's all set up on
  145. 5:52this nice carpeted, sturdy deskike
  146. 5:56surface that's already built into the
  147. 5:59car. And if I need to get out, I can get
  148. 6:02out because none of this is sitting on
  149. 6:04me. We also have to talk about a couple
  150. 6:06of other things that are actually built
  151. 6:07into the car that's going to help your
  152. 6:09ultimate office work space setup. And
  153. 6:13the first one are the seats. These seats
  154. 6:16are awesome. They are some of the most
  155. 6:18comfortable seats that I've ever sat in.
  156. 6:20More comfortable than any desk chair
  157. 6:22that I have ever sat in. And I have the
  158. 6:24ability to adjust it to any position
  159. 6:27that I find comfortable. I have heated
  160. 6:29seats. I have cooled seats. And that is
  161. 6:33a perfect setup if you're going to be
  162. 6:34spending any amount of time working from
  163. 6:36your mobile office in this Tesla. The
  164. 6:40second thing I have to talk about that's
  165. 6:41built into the car is climate. And we're
  166. 6:44basically sitting on a huge battery. I
  167. 6:46don't have to leave an engine running. I
  168. 6:47can be indoors even and not have to
  169. 6:49worry about it. But I can keep the
  170. 6:51climate set to exactly what I want
  171. 6:54anytime that I want and I don't have to
  172. 6:56worry about it because I've got a huge
  173. 6:57Tesla battery I'm sitting on. And since
  174. 6:59we're talking about batteries, that's
  175. 7:01the third thing, and that is power. This
  176. 7:04thing is a huge mobile power bank. I can
  177. 7:07take a USBC connection and plug it into
  178. 7:10my Mac and keep everything charged while
  179. 7:12I'm working, and I never have to worry
  180. 7:14about running out of juice. Now, I
  181. 7:16mentioned earlier in this video about
  182. 7:18using Starlink, and I'd like to tell you
  183. 7:20that you can have your cake and eat it,
  184. 7:22too, but that's not exactly the case. In
  185. 7:25order to get the dual display setup to
  186. 7:27work properly, you have to have a wired
  187. 7:30connection from your laptop to an
  188. 7:34internet source. And a Starlink Mini
  189. 7:37doesn't have that wired connection, at
  190. 7:39least not easily. So, probably in that
  191. 7:42case, if you want to do some heavy
  192. 7:44lifting utilizing the Tesla screen,
  193. 7:46you're going to have to tether to your
  194. 7:47phone. But if you want to use Starlink,
  195. 7:50you certainly can and have this exact
  196. 7:52same setup, having your iPad, having the
  197. 7:55car, and having your laptop connected to
  198. 7:58Starlink, but you just won't be able to
  199. 7:59do the file sharing. But fortunately,
  200. 8:01with the Tesla, we have things like
  201. 8:04Netflix and YouTube and other things
  202. 8:06built into the car and a web browser
  203. 8:09that you might be able to get by with.
  204. 8:10So, if you use Starlink, you want to use
  205. 8:13Starlink, you can get it done, but you
  206. 8:15can't quite do all of it. So, with the
  207. 8:18comfort of the car seats, the climate,
  208. 8:20power to my laptop, my extended display,
  209. 8:24my swivel screen, my external keyboard,
  210. 8:27my external mouse, my iPad. I am good to
  211. 8:30go for the long haul. And if I need to
  212. 8:32get out, no problem. I can slide right
  213. 8:34out. All right, this is my ultimate
  214. 8:36office for the Tesla. And hopefully I
  215. 8:39showed you everything that you need to
  216. 8:40do in order to set this up yourself. If
  217. 8:42you want to set up the side display,
  218. 8:44I'll leave description down below. Oh,
  219. 8:46and by the way, I have a deal for you
  220. 8:48down in the description. So, go ahead
  221. 8:50and check that out. So, hopefully you
  222. 8:51enjoyed this video. If you did, I'd
  223. 8:53appreciate you going down there and tap
  224. 8:55that like button. And if you're new to
  225. 8:56the channel, subscriptions are always
  226. 8:58welcomed. And if you're looking to pick
  227. 9:00up a Tesla of your own, I would highly
  228. 9:02recommend it. Make sure you start that
  229. 9:03process out with a referral link. Use
  230. 9:05any referral link you want, but if you
  231. 9:06want to start at iatesu.com,
  232. 9:08that would be great. Thanks so much for
  233. 9:10watching. We'll catch you on the next
  234. 9:12one.
