Hypnotist Decodes: The "Hidden" Technique Tony Robbins Used on Alex Hormozi — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Two great giants, Alex Horoszi and Tony
- 0:03Robbins, came together for an interview
- 0:06or a coaching session. I'm going to
- 0:08break it down for fellow practitioners
- 0:10so they can see actually what is going
- 0:12on.
- 0:15>> It's not every day you get to interview
- 0:16Tony Robbins. And so,
- 0:18>> so I watched the first 10 minutes and
- 0:19what I noticed is just how anxious Alex
- 0:22Horosi is. He's completely out of
- 0:25breath. He is covering his mouth. He's
- 0:28trying to slide down in his chair to
- 0:30look more comfortable.
- 0:32I then made the mistake of posting on
- 0:35Facebook about it and people do not
- 0:38obviously get my humor. Uh yeah, that's
- 0:41caused quite a stir. Anyway, let's
- 0:44continue the dichotomy.
- 0:47So, quite early on, there is an
- 0:50interruption where Tony corrects Alex on
- 0:54his earnings. This establishes
- 0:57leadership. It moves Alex from host to
- 1:01listener and it also sets a hierarchy
- 1:04early on
- 1:06>> folio that do north of seven plus
- 1:08billion a year and as impressive as that
- 1:10is
- 1:11>> it's actually 12 billion now
- 1:12>> 12 billion there you go
- 1:13>> the second thing that Tony does which is
- 1:16quite clever he says that they are
- 1:19brothers and sisters in the game this is
- 1:22building rapport and it's kind of saying
- 1:26we're all part of the same group. It's
- 1:28building community.
- 1:31>> Just getting started, but a lot of
- 1:32people are predominantly business.
- 1:33>> There's more brothers and sisters out
- 1:34there. Yours, mine, right?
- 1:35>> In the game. In the game.
- 1:37>> The same game. Bet on yourself and grow,
- 1:38right? Find a way to give.
- 1:40>> Yes. And so the first one was,
- 1:43how do you see the dichotomy between
- 1:46duty and enjoyment as it relates to the
- 1:50impact that you want to make with the
- 1:52business that you have? So, Alex uses
- 1:54the word duty and that has a lot of
- 1:59loading. A word like duty. It suggests
- 2:03hard work or something that you have to
- 2:06do. And obviously Tony points out that
- 2:10it changes your your words can change
- 2:12your biochemistry. Every thought you
- 2:14have, every word you say releases a
- 2:16hormone into the nervous system. So they
- 2:18both want the same outcome, but the
- 2:21words you use to get there can hugely
- 2:24impact on your results.
- 2:28>> It's a laugh if you do it, but words are
- 2:29even more powerful.
- 2:30>> So duty could be a good word like if
- 2:33you're seeing yourself like a soldier.
- 2:35Yeah.
- 2:35>> Right.
- 2:36>> But I don't look at it that way. I look
- 2:38at it as um
- 2:39>> obligation.
- 2:39>> No, I don't look at obligation as saying
- 2:41the same thing. No, it's okay. But I say
- 2:43this because I I saw this in some of
- 2:44your language and and I don't know if
- 2:46this is helpful to you. I don't pretend
- 2:47to coach you in any way.
- 2:48>> So, he's just shifting the meaning from
- 2:53obligation to opportunity.
- 2:56>> Like I've I've spoken to a number of
- 2:57billionaires, yourself included, where I
- 2:59I'm like
- 3:00the next game, right? And so the game
- 3:03that we're in right now, I I know I
- 3:05obviously there's going to be risks.
- 3:06There's going to be lots of things that
- 3:07we're going to do, but I I feel like I
- 3:08have a direction to what I I know what
- 3:10we're doing. And when I talk to some of
- 3:11the some of the you know billionaires
- 3:12that are in more private equity,
- 3:14financial engineering, commodities
- 3:16trading different than maybe what you
- 3:17know obviously.
- 3:20>> So Alex talks about the next game. The
- 3:23thing I see when I work with highlevel
- 3:27individuals that are high achievers,
- 3:30they have met all their hierarchy of
- 3:34needs. They have enough money. They have
- 3:38everything they need. And the enjoyment
- 3:40for them is in chasing that dream. Once
- 3:45they hit the goal, they lose interest
- 3:48because another zero in the account is
- 3:52not that exciting. It doesn't actually
- 3:56change their life in any way. It's just
- 3:58another number in their account. So,
- 4:01they need something else to reach for.
- 4:07I don't even feel in some ways that I am
- 4:09driven. I do this because I don't know
- 4:11what else to do.
- 4:12>> It's like this is the only thing I'm
- 4:13good at.
- 4:14>> So, Alex says, "I do this because I
- 4:18don't know what else to do." And his
- 4:20brain has just been wired for
- 4:24achievement. So, the only satisfaction
- 4:27he gets is from that hunting of that
- 4:31achievement.
- 4:33So, I'll give you my two cents, which is
- 4:35all it's worth. Um,
- 4:38unless you stay emotionally assoc
- 4:41astronauts, you know, I got to interview
- 4:42several of them, right? Think of them.
- 4:44Anyone out?
- 4:45>> So, Tony Robbins used the classical
- 4:48double bind here. He says, I'm going to
- 4:51give you my two cents worth. That's all.
- 4:55And then goes on to say how he
- 4:57interviewed astronauts. That's not two
- 5:00cents worth. So that is really a double
- 5:03bind. He's setting expectation down here
- 5:06and then delivering up here.
- 5:09>> I would tell you is true and I'll just
- 5:11give my own experience. We're not the
- 5:12same person but maybe it'll be
- 5:14instructive. I don't know.
- 5:15>> So I don't know maybe 10 years.
- 5:17>> The next thing of interest he says maybe
- 5:19it'll be instructive. I don't know.
- 5:22That's another hypnotic command. It
- 5:24implies learning without agreement. It
- 5:27also invites the nervous system to stay
- 5:29open rather than defend or evaluate.
- 5:33>> 10 years I found myself at a place where
- 5:35it's like I love my life. I couldn't be
- 5:37more fulfilled than this. I have the
- 5:38most incredible wife. I have the most
- 5:40incredible kids. You know, I I I I want
- 5:42to be an athlete. I make it, you know,
- 5:44right behind you. I have like six
- 5:45national championship rings from
- 5:47different teams that I own or that I
- 5:50help [clears throat] to coach and turn
- 5:51around. I'm working with the greatest
- 5:52athletes in the world, the greatest
- 5:54business people in the world.
- 5:55The next bit is just Tony Robbins
- 5:58establishing more authority through
- 6:00storytelling because obviously this is
- 6:04an interview that is a paycheck at the
- 6:06end of this for both of them. It's not a
- 6:09fully blown coaching session.
- 6:11>> You know, I'm lucky enough like you, I'm
- 6:13very blessed. I have a private plane of
- 6:15737. It burns a lot of carbon. You know,
- 6:18I want to be conscious. How many trees
- 6:19does that burn? 3,000 trees a year. I'm
- 6:22like, I'll plant 100 million trees. But
- 6:23not just plant the trees. [laughter] I'm
- 6:25going to plant 100 million trees and I'm
- 6:26going to work with the farmers and we're
- 6:27going to show them how to go from making
- 6:28a buck a day to 12.
- 6:30>> So Tony Robbins has had some backlash
- 6:33about being a fat cat. So this next
- 6:36section is him just saying, "Yeah, I
- 6:40drive a private jet, but I also plant
- 6:43trees. I also feed the hungry." He is
- 6:47justifying
- 6:49his earnings.
- 6:52He's pairing his wealth with
- 6:54contribution
- 6:55and he's repositioning his identity with
- 6:59responsible and not indulgent.
- 7:02Obviously, he's been mentioning big
- 7:04figures, so he's managing the audience
- 7:08perception.
