  2. 0:05a 10-speed transmission is just a
  3. 0:075-speed on top of another 5-speed if
  4. 0:09you've driven a manual transmission
  5. 0:11before you're probably familiar with the
  6. 0:13m pattern associated with shifting
  7. 0:15through the gears on the front of the
  8. 0:17shift handle is the range selector or
  9. 0:20splitter which is used to select the low
  10. 0:22range gears in the down position and the
  11. 0:24high range gears in the up position
  12. 0:26the low range gears are first through
  13. 0:28fifth and low reverse
  14. 0:30and the high range gears are sixth
  15. 0:32through tenth and high reverse
  16. 0:34the splitter talks to the transmission
  17. 0:36in neutral which means pushing the
  18. 0:38splitter up or down while you're in gear
  19. 0:40doesn't change the gear you're in so if
  20. 0:42you put the truck in third gear with the
  21. 0:44splitter down and then flip the splitter
  22. 0:46up you're still in third gear
  23. 0:49with the splitter up in third if you
  24. 0:50push the shifter to neutral and then
  25. 0:52back to third you're now in eighth gear
  26. 0:55the splitter only talks to the
  27. 0:57transmission when the shifter is in
  28. 0:59neutral we'll talk more about this in a
  29. 1:01few minutes when we cover shifting from
  30. 1:02fifth gear to sixth gear
  31. 1:05let's take a look at the width of the
  32. 1:06shift pattern
  33. 1:08you may assume that it's wider than it
  34. 1:10is because the vehicle is so large but
  35. 1:12as you can see here this is neutral and
  36. 1:14from the right side to the left side is
  37. 1:16about seven inches
  38. 1:18the point at which the shifter stops is
  39. 1:20called a hard wall there's a right hard
  40. 1:22wall and a left hard wall
  41. 1:24the right hard wall gives you access to
  42. 1:26fourth and fifth when the splitter is
  43. 1:27down and ninth and tenth when the
  44. 1:29splitter is up
  45. 1:31the left hard wall gives you access to
  46. 1:32low reverse and first when the splitter
  47. 1:35is down and high reverse and sixth when
  48. 1:37the splitter is up
  49. 1:40you can also locate the soft wall which
  50. 1:42is in the middle
  51. 1:43as you can see from the right hard wall
  52. 1:45it's as easy as pushing the shifter to
  53. 1:47the left with a finger
  54. 1:55if i want to pull the shifter to the
  55. 1:57left hard wall i have to use a little
  56. 1:59force because i'm overcoming a spring
  57. 2:01that sits between the middle soft wall
  58. 2:03and the left hard wall
  59. 2:05if i ease off the pressure the spring
  60. 2:07pushes the shifter back to the soft wall
  61. 2:10by the way it's called a soft wall
  62. 2:11because we can push through it
  63. 2:13finding the soft wall allows you to
  64. 2:15access second and third when the
  65. 2:17splitter is down and seventh and eighth
  66. 2:19when the splitter is up
  67. 2:20if you can't find the soft wall when
  68. 2:22you're shifting on the road it's
  69. 2:24probably because you're nervous
  70. 2:25nervousness causes some students to grip
  71. 2:27the shifter too tightly and muscling the
  72. 2:29shifter makes it difficult to feel the
  73. 2:31spring and locate the soft wall these
  74. 2:34big trucks require very little arm
  75. 2:36strength to shift
  76. 2:37you'll expend more energy pushing the
  77. 2:39stiff clutch pedal
  78. 2:45students are required to double clutch
  79. 2:47every shift which means the clutch has
  80. 2:49to be pushed twice every time you shift
  81. 2:51in a semi tractor you need to push the
  82. 2:53clutch and move the shifter at the same
  83. 2:56time this takes some coordination but
  84. 2:58you can practice anywhere try this
  85. 3:00exercise in a chair
  86. 3:02push an imaginary clutch pedal with your
  87. 3:03left foot and move your right hand at
  88. 3:06the same time one two
  89. 3:08one two
  90. 3:09one two this exercise will develop your
  91. 3:12hand foot coordination and you'll build
  92. 3:14a little muscle memory from the
  93. 3:15repetition
  94. 3:16that one two speed is recommended for
  95. 3:19every up shift when double clutching
  96. 3:21you'll want to push the clutch in just
  97. 3:23two to three inches when you depress the
  98. 3:25clutch pedal you should also move the
  99. 3:27shifter to neutral at the same time with
  100. 3:29the second clutch you'll move the
  101. 3:31shifter to gear clutch to neutral clutch
  102. 3:33to gear one two clutch clutch push the
  103. 3:37clutch pedal and move the shifter at the
  104. 3:39same time one two two short clutches two
  105. 3:42to three inches you also have to
  106. 3:44remember which gear you're in and the
  107. 3:46location of your next gear in the shift
  108. 3:48pattern
  109. 3:50use the walls to find your gears and
  110. 3:51it'll become second nature always
  111. 3:53remember that when you push the clutch
  112. 3:55pedal you have to release the gas pedal
  113. 3:57the opposite is also true when you push
  114. 3:59the gas pedal release the clutch pedal
  115. 4:02these two pedals must be operated
  116. 4:04independently of each other avoid
  117. 4:06pushing both of these pedals in at the
  118. 4:07same time
  119. 4:13the only time we push the clutch pedal
  120. 4:15to the floor is when the vehicle is
  121. 4:17stopped here's why when the vehicle is
  122. 4:19stationary the gears on the transmission
  123. 4:21are turning to put a stationary truck in
  124. 4:24gear we need to stop those turning gears
  125. 4:27for a stopped truck you must stop the
  126. 4:29gears you can stop the gears by pushing
  127. 4:31the clutch pedal all the way to the
  128. 4:33floor when you push the clutch pedal to
  129. 4:35the floor you engage the clutch brake
  130. 4:37which stops the gears from turning and
  131. 4:39allows you to put the truck in gear by
  132. 4:41the way if the vehicle is stopped and
  133. 4:43you're having trouble putting the truck
  134. 4:44into gear after fully depressing the
  135. 4:46clutch pedal release the pedal just a
  136. 4:48hair
  137. 4:49it's just the opposite when the truck is
  138. 4:50moving if the vehicle is in motion the
  139. 4:53gears have to be turning a moving
  140. 4:55vehicle requires moving or spinning
  141. 4:58gears the gears will continue spinning
  142. 5:00if you avoid pushing the clutch pedal to
  143. 5:02the floor this is why we only push the
  144. 5:04clutch pedal in two to three inches when
  145. 5:06we're shifting
  146. 5:07keep the clutch pedal away from the
  147. 5:09floor when the truck is moving if you
  148. 5:11find yourself fully depressing the
  149. 5:12clutch you're probably nervous try
  150. 5:15pulling over and practicing two short
  151. 5:17clutches two to three inches deep at the
  152. 5:19one two speed do it 20 to 30 times and
  153. 5:23hit the road again
  154. 5:30consider using a side grip when you
  155. 5:32shift because there are some advantages
  156. 5:34to gripping the shifter from the side
  157. 5:36first of all it's easy to manipulate the
  158. 5:38splitter when it's always between your
  159. 5:39second and third fingers and you have
  160. 5:41your thumb on top of the shifter for
  161. 5:43leverage but here's a better reason
  162. 5:45shifting from sixth to seventh new
  163. 5:48students sometimes accidentally shift to
  164. 5:50ninth when they're trying to hit seven
  165. 5:52here's one way to fix that in sixth gear
  166. 5:55use the bottom part of your hand to push
  167. 5:57the shifter to neutral then allow the
  168. 5:59spring to push the shifter to the middle
  169. 6:01soft wall then push straight forward to
  170. 6:03seventh when the spring pushes the
  171. 6:05shifter to the middle you'll feel it in
  172. 6:07the palm of your hand with a side grip
  173. 6:09practice this a few times in a
  174. 6:11stationary truck with the engine idling
  175. 6:13and the clutch fully depressed
  176. 6:18here's another way to use the walls
  177. 6:20shifting from five to six is the longest
  178. 6:23shift because you're shifting from one
  179. 6:24hard wall to the other here's an
  180. 6:26efficient way to make sixth gear since
  181. 6:28you're required to double clutch why not
  182. 6:30take care of most of the shift with the
  183. 6:32first clutch here's what i mean when you
  184. 6:35clutch to neutral pull the shifter all
  185. 6:37the way over to the left hard wall then
  186. 6:38clutch again and pull straight down to
  187. 6:40sixth
  188. 6:41grab a truck that isn't rolling and
  189. 6:43practice this a few times
  190. 6:45be sure to pre-select sixth gear when
  191. 6:47you're in fifth by pushing the splitter
  192. 6:49up the splitter talks to the
  193. 6:50transmission when you shift to neutral
  194. 6:52so if you're in fifth gear and push the
  195. 6:54splitter up you're still in fifth gear
  196. 6:57when you shift to neutral the splitter
  197. 6:58notifies the transmission that you want
  198. 7:00the higher gears and the transmission
  199. 7:02then makes those gears available if you
  200. 7:04shift to neutral and then pull the
  201. 7:06splitter up it may be awkward and
  202. 7:08prolong your shift
  203. 7:09better to get it out of the way while
  204. 7:11you're in fifth so that you can
  205. 7:12concentrate on the long shift to sixth
  206. 7:14one last item about the splitter if you
  207. 7:17come to a stop and forget to push the
  208. 7:18splitter down before shifting to your
  209. 7:20start gear the truck will likely stall
  210. 7:22when you try to pull forward try to
  211. 7:24remember split her down whenever you
  212. 7:26come to a stop
