  11. 1:39going to achieve it how about that
  12. 1:42a little bit early because my Democrat

  14. 2:33door so just just like we have already
  15. 2:39been able to share a little bit
  16. 2:46[Music]

  23. 3:20our newsletter yeah
  24. 3:26yesterday at City Council there was
  25. 3:28discussion about tax incremental
  26. 3:30financing the city is interested in
  27. 3:33putting fifteen new districts almost
  28. 3:35just up to three hundred acres to blank
  29. 3:38in the city and the tips I can talk to
  30. 3:41you about what tips are afterwards but
  31. 3:43basically they capture the increased
  32. 3:45value of the taxes Boyd that site and
  33. 3:48they can only be used on that site next
  34. 3:51week
  35. 3:52December 18th at 1:30 p.m. at City Hall

  38. 3:59come out like they did yesterday and
  39. 4:02voice their concerns regarding the lack
  40. 4:05of engagement transparency and data
  41. 4:10surrounding artists Monday December 16th
  42. 4:24537 Charmaine without the event at my
  43. 4:28house at 39 anything goes on last night
  44. 4:49between 7:00 and 9:30 at these tables
  45. 4:51the free inquiry group and it's solstice
  46. 4:54me and they were offered the amazing
  47. 4:58opportunity of donating all of our food
  48. 5:09[Music]
  49. 5:13as well that means she's to show up
  50. 5:58January 7th very important button see me
  51. 6:02or I have a pleasure of introducing
  52. 6:05jarred welcomes and most of you probably
  53. 6:09know him from a long time at the
  54. 6:11environment at 30 years he's been with
  55. 6:14wdsu's and 2012 and he's been doing
  56. 6:18politics for his whole adult life 45
  57. 6:23years so I asked him to come talk and
  58. 6:26sort of explain to us what happened with
  59. 6:29House bill 6 and he is going to explain
  60. 6:32that was kinda fishy to me and maybe
  61. 6:36talk about what's gonna be happening in
  62. 6:38the future
  63. 6:47[Applause]
  64. 6:48[Music]
  65. 7:10[Music]
  66. 7:36this year
  67. 7:52and one o'clock and no more I'm going to
  68. 7:57get I'll get to issues
  69. 9:02[Music]
  70. 9:32but I think they're taking some very
  71. 9:41[Music]
  72. 9:46[Music]
  73. 9:48who are they see themselves issues and
  74. 10:27particularly reference the one where
  75. 10:29they see we're never going to get
  76. 10:38anything about this president or this
  77. 10:42Congress and that is helping Democrats
  78. 10:47running for every from
  79. 11:11and people are saying well it was a
  80. 11:16failure on his back across the well
  81. 11:41because the weakness and he's lost a lot
  82. 12:02of support
  83. 12:35[Music]
  84. 13:25and once you do that basically cut my
  85. 13:41teeth covering politics
  86. 14:26[Music]
  87. 14:38[Music]
  88. 14:42Republican voters voting for steve
  89. 14:47Beshear
  90. 14:56[Music]
  91. 15:16[Applause]
  92. 16:11[Music]
  93. 16:27every single
  94. 17:24[Music]
  95. 17:30[Applause]
  96. 17:44[Music]
  97. 18:02but Wyoming is a place that when they
  98. 18:06last nine they redrew the district lines
  99. 18:14and this was creating this money yes sir
  100. 18:48yeah I would also add that just as
  101. 18:51surprising there was some long term very
  102. 18:53familiar names and incumbents that
  103. 18:58didn't get reelected what was very
  104. 19:00telling about myself and it's always
  105. 19:02very telling especially on a suburban
  106. 19:04community where you know people have a
  107. 19:09pretty good idea of who they are
  108. 20:15[Music]
  109. 21:53it's that mess
  110. 22:13Harlan County will keep forever
  111. 22:48[Music]
  112. 23:31you should be dancing on tables because
  113. 23:38you're finally making progress or you
  114. 23:43really have to make progress is in these
  115. 23:48a house or a house where you find a
  116. 23:54competitive race and it's very very
  117. 24:00difficult and you don't have the same
  118. 24:02rules that you're going to have and
  119. 24:04redistricting for congressional
  120. 24:06districts so it's going to take longer
  121. 24:09and that's going to take more effort but
  122. 24:13they can and still make progress in
  123. 24:18terms of the statewide constitutional
  124. 24:22the Secretary of State what those people
  125. 24:32do for publishers do with those offices
  126. 24:37over the next few years Democrats are
  127. 24:42starting to build a pretty good stable
  128. 24:45potential candidates out there like Alex
  129. 25:01trying to feed one not giving great
  130. 25:04credit for you colleges yes it's a blue
  131. 25:13county we're at a disadvantage
  132. 25:57[Music]
  133. 25:58it's he's not going to talk this is
  134. 26:03about what I'm gonna talk about Donald
  135. 26:08Trump wiped out and I think you can lose
  136. 26:15Iowa as well you know the Democrats make
  137. 26:22the right kind of candidate a candidate
  138. 26:24who makes an effort to pick up those
  139. 26:29voters who won the state of Ohio or for
  140. 26:33Trump in 2016 and a lot of those people
  141. 26:38are the people of the motive Ally people
  142. 26:44up and down the Ohio River in some of
  143. 26:47the most chronically economically
  144. 26:51depressed areas of the state southern
  145. 26:53Ohio and maybe you wanted this three and
  146. 26:58from the other which kept them going for
  147. 27:01many decades now water is for the street
  148. 27:06whether it's
  149. 27:07mr. waters auto parts of the through
  150. 27:10steel they're going away those jobs if
  151. 27:14not away drunken in 2016 and I'm gonna
  152. 27:19fix all that I don't think they believe
  153. 27:26it's been touched and great kind of
  154. 27:30candidate goes into those areas and
  155. 27:39[Music]
  156. 27:45somebody else because one thing I'll be
  157. 27:52right with you I was the one thing that
  158. 27:56happened the 2016 Hillary Clinton
  159. 27:58absolutely absolutely dig North didn't
  160. 28:05bother painting there in fact yes she
  161. 28:09was almost dismissive of them in her
  162. 28:12speech these are a lot of people who
  163. 28:20have suffered a lot of economic distress
  164. 28:23over the years and they just wanted
  165. 28:26somebody who would listen to that and
  166. 28:29who would do so I keep telling the
  167. 28:40Democrats like but I talked to groups
  168. 28:44like this I know you're all split up
  169. 28:46these presidential debates
  170. 28:49I think get it fixed quick find one
  171. 28:52who's good belongs in fog a mirror
  172. 28:56[Laughter]
  173. 28:58[Music]
  174. 29:26[Music]
  175. 29:33[Music]
  176. 30:01[Music]
  177. 30:35[Music]
  178. 30:38what made me promise that he made you in
  179. 30:47Southeast Ohio to Jackson how much hard
  180. 30:58time
  181. 31:29[Music]
  182. 32:07[Laughter]
  183. 32:09yes
  184. 32:12I'm a younger voter we do care
  185. 32:15I'm a younger voter we do care
  186. 32:48[Music]
  187. 32:49but I wonder hmmm up against words I was
  188. 33:59talking to somebody
  189. 34:15[Music]
  190. 34:58after Trump won by 8 percentage points
  191. 35:03he came in but he won all those Trump
  192. 35:33voters in the places I was talking about
  193. 35:36earlier where the people seen their jobs
  194. 35:41go away Trump said don't Sonny palaces
  195. 35:50bring these jobs back they voted for
  196. 35:54sure why that resonates with people
  197. 36:04especially people who are not well to do
  198. 36:10their working-class folks there are
  199. 36:12middle-class folks they're just trying
  200. 36:15to raise their families and have decent
  201. 36:19work and the dignity they want people to
  202. 36:24recognize there is a dignity you know if
  203. 36:26they did it that's not too much to ask
  204. 36:30and I think people respond to that and
  205. 36:33it was funny because during one of those
  206. 36:36Democratic debates where you have 27
  207. 36:41I use that term dignity of work and sort
  208. 37:45of talking about
  209. 37:51I call it even though it's a Catholic
  210. 38:23loss yes I just wanted to say my sister
  211. 38:28who is Republicans and her cute
  212. 38:31son-in-law's she lets me know that
  213. 38:33there's person in-laws don't like Trump
  214. 38:36yeah but I told her I don't care if you
  215. 38:39like it or not I would care if you
  216. 38:41support him and if you vote Republican
  217. 38:44any Republicans you were supporting
  218. 38:46Trump you talked about the Republican
  219. 38:49they don't want to mention his name but
  220. 38:51if you vote Republican they're going to
  221. 38:54stand behind you that's why are turning
  222. 39:08away turning away from Republican
  223. 39:12candidates even at the local level
  224. 39:14because they won't speak out they won't
  225. 39:17stand up and say yes
  226. 39:22[Music]
  227. 39:26okay and I'm asking this several times I
  228. 40:14always get the same response I said
  229. 40:17what's your priority for the Hamilton
  230. 40:21County Republican Party this is one
  231. 40:28that's all Joe deters reelected
  232. 40:34this is jobs that's the biggest source
  233. 40:38of jobs in the county they know they're
  234. 40:41losing everything else they are and you
  235. 40:47know just look around what's been
  236. 40:49happening in recent years yeah
  237. 41:12[Music]
  238. 42:06Williams what working class and she
  239. 42:09talks about the class cluelessness I
  240. 42:11mean two-thirds of the electorate have
  241. 42:14not gone to college 42,000 factories
  242. 42:19that closed in the last ten years
  243. 42:216 million 6 million manufacturing jobs
  244. 42:25in the Austin is there's a group of real
  245. 42:28grievances and they need some empathy
  246. 42:30they find
  247. 42:32infuriating the sort of being looked
  248. 42:35down us rednecks trash and so forth they
  249. 42:40care about the issue of gentlemen
  250. 42:48dignity and dry is extremely important
  251. 42:51to people who feel that they're being
  252. 42:52marginalized any of us who want to
  253. 42:56canvass or anything else have to really
  254. 42:59think hard about our own biases entirely
  255. 43:24to big cities Pittsburgh Philadelphia
  256. 43:39[Music]
  257. 43:43now these are people that have but for
  258. 43:56the most part people were just feeling
  259. 43:59helpless until you can't start a
  260. 44:05presidential campaign okay I hope maybe
  261. 44:24I can just felt like that little
  262. 44:26misunderstanding happened in the room
  263. 44:28when you were referring to begin
  264. 44:31evangelical vote and you said younger
  265. 44:34people don't care anymore I expected my
  266. 44:37mom called I think what we're trying to
  267. 44:39say was that some of the younger
  268. 44:42evangelical voters are not as concerned
  269. 44:45about certain issues that are the hold
  270. 44:48their evangelical voters after were
  271. 44:50absolutist about for example gay rights
  272. 44:53yeah and I think
  273. 45:03[Applause]
  274. 45:09okay I had that situation in which is a
  275. 47:12variable sign reading over well this
  276. 47:17story before or equal on when it so
  277. 47:25existed before the dirty trick shut it
  278. 47:28down and I during the period towards the
  279. 47:322nd I would drive equal to the polls and
  280. 47:36it was almost entirely for
  281. 47:40african-americans and then I was driving
  282. 47:42to the pole so we weren't permitted to
  283. 47:44talk to them about how they were had a
  284. 47:45vote before but if they wanted to talk
  285. 47:47about
  286. 47:48they could and almost everybody did and
  287. 47:53these many traditionally America the
  288. 47:57Democratic over almost every single one
  289. 48:00of them was only for George Bush don't
  290. 48:03yet and I would ask him why and there
  291. 48:06were just two reasons and he saw that
  292. 48:08these are the two messages the top three
  293. 48:10to them what as clumsy no son but
  294. 48:15protect the sanctity of marriage and the
  295. 48:18unborn yeah and I would ask so where did
  296. 48:22you get this information
  297. 48:24donkeys the same answer our ministers
  298. 48:26and and when I asked him about other
  299. 48:30aspects of what the Democratic candidate
  300. 48:34might mean to them they were unaware of
  301. 48:35them so one or two powerful messages is
  302. 48:39pretty much enough for most people the
  303. 48:42whole
  304. 48:47[Music]
  305. 50:01[Music]
  306. 50:21[Music]
  307. 50:24yes you know until I see a microphone
  308. 50:36so I wanted to go back to something you
  309. 50:39said about about beaters and clarifying
  310. 50:42um you said that the rush of the support
  311. 50:48eaters which they see because it's the
  312. 50:51largest source of jobs in the county
  313. 50:53what do you mean specifically what is
  314. 50:55the you mean in Corrections or or just
  315. 51:00the that it's a huge operation lawyers
  316. 51:08or no yes they're the Republican Party
  317. 51:32in this city in this survived as the
  318. 51:39strong party for many decades because of
  319. 51:44patronage because they could give people
  320. 51:48jobs
  321. 52:35and that's why Joe Deiters is talking
  322. 52:40about that's true that's true - that's
  323. 53:04crazy - if you were gambling man who do
  324. 53:12you feel who do you think the dance will
  325. 53:15end up with their ticket division who
  326. 53:20would you predict I think it's gonna be
  327. 53:33biting I think that's so not favor of it
  328. 53:37I think
  329. 53:39[Music]
  330. 53:47[Music]
  331. 53:58[Music]
  332. 54:14[Music]
  333. 54:48somebody was acceptable with the
  334. 54:52right-wing party
  335. 55:18[Music]
  336. 55:26what's the mission
  337. 55:27machine gonna do to the candidate that
  338. 55:30negative successful machine that the
  339. 55:34Republican Party is able to focus on or
  340. 55:38create make up all kinds of stuff and
  341. 55:42then just big blast the candidate you
  342. 55:46know the best practitioner of that was
  343. 55:52for Jimmy Schwartz he was Steve Schatz
  344. 56:06campaign manager he was his top campaign
  345. 56:13he ran organization the club found the
  346. 56:16square groove which applies campaigns
  347. 56:20which ran all those which all work
  348. 56:31workers
  349. 56:31Jimmy Schwartz nobody knows because he
  350. 56:37locked his doors of his business and he
  351. 56:40disappeared because there were a whole
  352. 56:43lot of money
  353. 56:51[Music]
  354. 57:04[Music]
  355. 57:47don't worry about this is my he was such
  356. 58:06a successful job wasn't successful too
  357. 58:08much Ellison
  358. 58:40[Music]
  359. 58:55[Music]
  360. 59:11coming out of university and people and
  361. 59:25so they started a petition campaign to
  362. 59:28try to repeal this legislation which is
  363. 59:34very difficult at school and you have to
  364. 59:37have a lot of money and I I guess I've
  365. 59:44been in politics of 45 years with the
  366. 59:47campaign the first energy
  367. 1:00:10[Music]
  368. 1:00:30and they're telling people they have
  369. 1:00:38paid people in circulating petitions and
  370. 1:00:43FirstEnergy was going around and they
  371. 1:01:00were threatening the petition people
  372. 1:01:05themselves and I know I know nurses
  373. 1:01:10college
  374. 1:01:12dollars for consultants who was running
  375. 1:01:16that campaign now tell you the truth I
  376. 1:01:18was surprised because
  377. 1:01:23[Music]
  378. 1:01:30[Music]
  379. 1:01:44[Music]
  380. 1:01:52[Music]
  381. 1:02:07he was disgusted it was ugly
  382. 1:02:46it's going to get more ugly but the
  383. 1:03:00bottom line is we want to find a
  384. 1:03:02petition because we want to get every
  385. 1:03:04kid right yes okay
  386. 1:03:14it expires they're trying to get the
  387. 1:03:16judge to give them more time and then go
  388. 1:03:19back out of the field and try to get
  389. 1:03:21more singers because they don't have
  390. 1:03:22nothing there's enough people that
  391. 1:03:26intimidated by this
  392. 1:03:29you know first energy
