- 0:00Do you know where Mr. Myers is? Mars?
- 0:03Yes. John Myers? Oh, Meyer? No. No. I
- 0:06don't. He works for you, does he not,
- 0:09Mr. Hughes? He works for my company. It
- 0:11It may be It may be funny to you that he
- 0:13isn't here. I didn't laugh, Senator.
- 0:15Somebody laughed back there.
- 0:19Well, he's in your employee. Do you
- 0:21think that Mr. Meyers in business at the
- 0:23present time is more important than this
- 0:26committee hearing? Well, it's more
- 0:27important to my company. I can tell you
- 0:29that. Who in your company will know the
- 0:30whereabouts of Mr. Mars at the present
- 0:32time? I don't know that. But you've had
- 0:34him here for unlimited questioning, and
- 0:36I've brought him back here twice from
- 0:38abroad. I don't see why I should do any
- 0:40more than that. Just to accommodate you
- 0:42so you can put him up here beside me on
- 0:44the stand and make a publicity show out
- 0:46of it. Well, is that the reason he is
- 0:48not here? No, that is not the reason.
- 0:50But I think it's the reason you want him
- 0:52back. Well, I have some questions that I
- 0:54want to ask him. Why didn't you ask him
- 0:56while he was here? I brought him here
- 0:57twice from abroad for you. Well, now
- 0:59will you see that Mr. Mars comes in at
- 1:02the 2:00 session? What? Today? Yes. Uh,
- 1:06no, I don't think I will.
- 1:13That was the voice of Howard Hughes
- 1:15recorded in
- 1:171947 in a United States Senate chamber
- 1:20in Washington, DC.
- 1:22It was in the course of a hearing by a
- 1:24special senate committee into the
- 1:26affairs of Hughes and Transorld Airline
- 1:30which he owned and operated at that
- 1:34time. The purpose of those hearings, as
- 1:37historians have determined, was an
- 1:40attempt by certain groups within the
- 1:42Senate and outside to force Hughes to
- 1:46merge with another major company that
- 1:48was flying overseas at the time.
- 1:51Now, the Johnny Meyer mentioned by uh
- 1:55both the these
- 1:57antagonists was a public relations man
- 1:59who had been hired by Hughes at the
- 2:01beginning of World War
- 2:03II. And uh Meyer in the course of his
- 2:07business for Hughes had been
- 2:09entertaining
- 2:11various military figures in including
- 2:14Colonel Elliot Roosevelt, then an Air
- 2:17Force officer. Uh, and uh, all this was
- 2:20part of the effort to get military
- 2:22contracts and as a part of the inquiry,
- 2:27Meyer's name came up and you heard what
- 2:29Mr. Hughes told the United States
- 2:32Senate. Now, we're going on from
- 2:361947 to the time this very year
- 2:41when uh, Mr. Hughes gave a telephone
- 2:44interview from Nassau in the Bahamas to
- 2:48a group of newspaper men in uh who were
- 2:51in California. And on this
- 2:55uh conference call, they spoke to each
- 2:59other for almost 3 hours. And during the
- 3:01course of this, Mr. Hughes revealed
- 3:02himself perhaps more fully than at any
- 3:05time in his past.
- 3:08We have here some of the things that he
- 3:16said. Mr. Hughes, you have been
- 3:18confronted recently with one of the most
- 3:21amazing stories that anybody surely ever
- 3:25had to hear. The story from Clifford
- 3:28Irving that he had written your
- 3:29autobiography with your help and
- 3:32assistance and you have denied this
- 3:35publicly. Uh, let me ask you directly.
- 3:38Do you know a man named Irving? And did
- 3:40you ever help him or anyone else with
- 3:42your autobiography?
- 3:45Well, this must go down in history. I
- 3:50only wish I were still in the movie
- 3:51business because uh I don't remember any
- 3:55scripts as wild or as
- 3:57uh
- 4:00uh stretching of the imagination as this
- 4:03uh yarn has turned out to be. I'm not
- 4:07talking about the biography itself
- 4:08because I've never read it. I don't know
- 4:10what's in it. But uh I mean this episode
- 4:13is just so fantastic that uh it taxes
- 4:17your imagination to believe that a thing
- 4:20like this could happen. Know him. I
- 4:22never saw him. I never even heard of him
- 4:24until uh uh a matter of days ago when
- 4:29this thing first came to my attention.
- 4:31And
- 4:33uh incidentally, where does he live? He
- 4:37lives in Spain at this time. Mr. Hughes
- 4:40in Spain. Yes, sir. He doesn't claim I
- 4:44came to Spain to see him, does he? No.
- 4:47He claims you traveled around the
- 4:48Western Hemisphere with him over a
- 4:50period of several months late last year.
- 4:53Have you left the hotel there in the
- 4:55Bahamas in the last several months?
- 4:58Well, left the hotel.
- 5:01Yes, sir.
- 5:03Uh, well, you're getting in a pretty
- 5:07touchy area there. I, let's say, I
- 5:09haven't left the Bahamas, and I
- 5:12certainly haven't seen Mr. Irving.
- 5:15Do you feel this situation with the
- 5:18Irvings is merely the gullibility of the
- 5:21publishing firm? Or is there something
- 5:23more serious here? Or is it merely that
- 5:26they were all out for a profit?
- 5:30Well, I just have no way of judging
- 5:32that. I I am so completely and utterly
- 5:36shocked that anything like this could
- 5:38happen that believe me, I don't know how
- 5:41to characterize it or to uh
- 5:45uh analyze it or diagnose it. I just
- 5:50haven't any idea. It is so fantastic and
- 5:53so
- 5:55utterly beyond the bounds of anyone's
- 5:58imagination that uh I I simply haven't
- 6:02any idea what
- 6:04uh is well obviously uh the motive for
- 6:08Irving could be money but uh uh
- 6:11certainly McGroill and Time don't have
- 6:14to uh uh deal in uh fake manuscripts or
- 6:20uh uh that sort of thing in order to
- 6:23survive. They they surely have a a
- 6:27business that operates at a higher plane
- 6:29than
- 6:30that. And uh so I don't I just don't
- 6:33have any idea what is behind this thing.
- 6:38Mr. Hughes, we understand that something
- 6:40over $800,000 was paid out in advance on
- 6:44the book and supposedly some of that
- 6:46came to you.
- 6:49That's what I've been told. And that's
- 6:51what we're trying to run down because uh
- 6:53that's the one thing that uh I don't
- 6:55understand here. In other words, there's
- 6:58got to be a bank record somewhere of
- 7:00this transaction. And uh Chester Davis
- 7:04will tell you that uh I have been very
- 7:07very critical of him for not being able
- 7:11to uncover this uh the path of these
- 7:16bonds because they even claim to have my
- 7:19endorsement or my signature on a check
- 7:23and uh yet they won't produce it. And uh
- 7:28I don't understand uh how any such money
- 7:31as
- 7:32this could be passed through any normal
- 7:36channel without leaving a trail
- 7:39uh a mile wide and bright pink or some
- 7:43such color. In other words, if uh if you
- 7:48knew the difficulties that people have
- 7:50in getting rid of stolen money or uh
- 7:55uh or money illegally obtained, uh uh
- 8:00they can't find a place to put it
- 8:02usually and uh or a place to keep it
- 8:05without putting in some bank or leaving
- 8:08some kind of a record if they uh try to
- 8:11handle it. uh uh and keep it in the form
- 8:15of currency, then they run into trouble
- 8:17with the IRS. And uh I just don't
- 8:21understand uh how any such sum of money
- 8:25as that which you
- 8:27describe should uh have changed hands
- 8:30here without there being a record of it
- 8:32somewhere. And what I don't understand
- 8:34is why Time Lamp and McGraill who are
- 8:38supposed to have a
- 8:41reputation for uh legitimacy and uh
- 8:46integrity uh to some degree. I don't
- 8:49understand why they won't cooperate with
- 8:51us in finding out uh what has really
- 8:54happened here because uh this money
- 8:58didn't come out of any of my bank
- 9:00accounts and it didn't enter any of my
- 9:02bank
- 9:03accounts. So uh uh and it wasn't given
- 9:07to any charity with my knowledge or
- 9:10direction. So what happened to the
- 9:12money? In other words, if they paid me
- 9:15this money as uh I understand they're
- 9:18claiming to have done, then where is it?
- 9:22Uh I couldn't hide that amount of money
- 9:24without uh running into all sorts of
- 9:27difficulty with the Treasury Department.
- 9:28And uh I just
- 9:32uh don't understand
- 9:34why the people involved in this affair
- 9:37won't be more cooperative with us in
- 9:41attempting to trace the path of these
- 9:45funds which are supposed uh to have
- 9:50passed uh I guess to me not from me.
- 9:53Isn't that what they claim? Mr. Hughes,
- 9:55there's something else I think a great
- 9:56many people would like to know about.
- 9:58There have been some very absurd
- 10:00descriptions of your physical
- 10:01appearance.
- 10:03Yeah. You mean the artist conception?
- 10:05Yes. The artist concept about the long
- 10:07fingernails and uh how some of us said
- 10:10that how could he possibly sign a letter
- 10:11with his fingernails as long as that and
- 10:14various other things that proof that I
- 10:16don't have fingernails. Exactly.
- 10:20You know, this is this is very amusing
- 10:23because the first time I read that uh
- 10:26article about the fingernails, I said,
- 10:29"Well, how in the hell could I write my
- 10:31name if I have fingernails?"
- 10:35Uh, no. Well, the thing that amused me
- 10:37was that you and I had the same reaction
- 10:38to it. that when I first uh read the
- 10:42account and saw the uh uh artist
- 10:46conception, the first uh statement I
- 10:49made to Chester or whichever one of my
- 10:53people it was who brought this material
- 10:56to me, the first statement I made was,
- 10:58"Well, how in the hell could I sign the
- 11:00documents that I've been signing and uh
- 11:04uh wouldn't I have gotten tangled up
- 11:06with these fingernails and tried to sign
- 11:08my name because I had just u completed
- 11:12signing quite a
- 11:13number of uh various
- 11:17um material uh correspondents and so
- 11:21forth and uh I'd written my name a
- 11:24number of times and uh it it's just
- 11:27amusing that you and I had the same
- 11:29reaction because I don't know why I
- 11:31would have put these damn things unless
- 11:33I could detach them while signing my
- 11:35name. Mr. Hughes, you have your
- 11:39fingernails manicured and your hair
- 11:42groomed just about as you have in the
- 11:44years past, don't you? Yes. I don't I
- 11:47don't ever have manicures. I do it
- 11:50myself. I never have had manicures. I
- 11:53don't know. Maybe it uh is an outgrowth
- 11:57of my childhood when he used to tease
- 11:59people about uh having that is males
- 12:02about having manicures. Anyway, I never
- 12:04had them ever, but uh I've always kept
- 12:08my fingernails a reasonable length and
- 12:10uh I cut them with clippers, not with uh
- 12:14scissors and nail file the way some
- 12:16people do. I use clippers because they
- 12:18don't leave a rough uh edge afterward.
- 12:23Anyway, I take care of them the same way
- 12:25I always have, the same I did when I
- 12:27went around the world and uh at times
- 12:29when you've seen me and uh
- 12:33uh at the time of the flight of the
- 12:35flying boat and every other occasion
- 12:37when I've come in contact with the
- 12:39press, I uh care for my fingernails in
- 12:42the same precise manner that I always
- 12:44have all my life. Please tell us the
- 12:46rest of the statistics about yourself at
- 12:50this time. How much you weigh? We
- 12:52understand some some people have said
- 12:53you weigh under 100 pounds, 94 in fact,
- 12:56and that you have a beard to your waist
- 12:59and long toenails and so on.
- 13:03Well, the statistics are that I am 6'3
- 13:07and 3/4 ines, which is what I've always
- 13:10been, just barely under
- 13:136'4. And uh
- 13:16at I would guess uh in 140 to 50 area. I
- 13:23am thin. I've always been thin. Uh and
- 13:27what was the other statistics? The
- 13:29toenail 6 to 8 in long. This is just
- 13:33inconceivable. If I had toenails 8 in
- 13:35long, I couldn't
- 13:37walk. Fingernails 8 in long. I couldn't
- 13:40write my name. That was the one thing
- 13:42that uh that was the first means of
- 13:44disproving it that came to my mind. Do
- 13:48you have a beard? Uh, and how would you
- 13:50describe that? I've worn a beard for
- 13:54uh, well, good god. Uh, I've been
- 13:58wearing a beard for
- 14:01um, long before it became the bad when I
- 14:04was living at Murefield Road. You know
- 14:06how long ago that was? And hair to the
- 14:09middle of your back.
- 14:11I thought it uh
- 14:16why in the world would anyone describe
- 14:18you this way?
- 14:20There's a malicious uh in a malicious
- 14:22effort to discredit me and uh to uphold
- 14:27these absurd statements are being made.
- 14:32This is all obviously a part of a
- 14:34campaign to to lend credence to this uh
- 14:39fairy tale that these people are trying
- 14:42somehow to uh support. It's been printed
- 14:47that the testimony describing you this
- 14:50way came from Peter Mayhew, whose
- 14:52father, your former Nevada chief, is so
- 14:56bitterly contesting his discharge.
- 14:58literally is a mild way of putting it.
- 15:04Uh everything short of murder uh as a
- 15:08result of being discharged. I don't
- 15:11suppose any disgruntled employee who was
- 15:14discharged has ever even come close to
- 15:17Mr. Mayu's contact as far as the son is
- 15:20concerned. He's never even seen me to my
- 15:22knowledge.
- 15:24I don't know how in the hell he could uh
- 15:26make any statements about my appearance
- 15:28because uh uh during all the time that I
- 15:32was in Las Vegas, I never saw him,
- 15:35Mr. Hughes, it's been a mystery to many,
- 15:37many
- 15:38people the way you live your life. Why
- 15:41do you live as you do? Why do you live
- 15:44the life of a recluse?
- 15:47Well, I don't really know it. I just
- 15:50sort of went into it, but I'll tell you
- 15:53one thing. I'm I'm
- 15:55uh rapidly planning to come out of it.
- 15:58In other words, uh I'm not going to
- 15:59continue being quite as reclusive, as
- 16:02you call it, as I've been because uh it
- 16:06apparently has attracted so much
- 16:07attention that uh I've just got to live
- 16:12a somewhat modified uh life in order not
- 16:15to be an
- 16:17oddity. A funny thing it really is that
- 16:20uh in this world uh
- 16:23uh
- 16:25you you cannot
- 16:28uh just be neutral or you cannot uh just
- 16:33go about your business and uh uh leave
- 16:37your life in what seems to you to be a
- 16:40normal way. This just doesn't seem
- 16:42possible. you you apparently have to do
- 16:47certain things and follow a certain path
- 16:50of conduct in order to satisfy people
- 16:54that there's not something
- 16:57wrong. And uh so I'm getting ready to
- 17:01embark on a program of uh convincing the
- 17:05public that
- 17:06uh these uh extreme uh statements are
- 17:11absurd.
- 17:13Mr. Hughes, there are a number of
- 17:15theories about why you have taken
- 17:18yourself out of the public
- 17:21view. And one of these is that you fear
- 17:24kidnapping. Another is that you are
- 17:26maneuvering constantly to avoid process
- 17:29servers and thus avoid lawsuits. And the
- 17:32third is that possibly you have some
- 17:34physical disability. Well, that of
- 17:37course is not true. Have no physical
- 17:39disability that would be apparent to
- 17:40anyone. What's uh the other two
- 17:43kidnapping and process maneuvering to
- 17:46avoid suits? Well, I've often thought of
- 17:50uh the potentiality of kidnapping uh in
- 17:54view of some of the publicity about my
- 17:58alleged
- 17:59wealth. And I say alleged because
- 18:03uh if uh some of the people who uh are
- 18:08uh making claims against me uh don't
- 18:13uh come to uh some state of sanity. Uh
- 18:18heaven knows what I'll have left. So
- 18:20that that's why I say alleged. Uh
- 18:23anyway, wait a minute. Let's get back on
- 18:25the track here. What was the last
- 18:27question? The third one was the business
- 18:29of maneuvering to avoid process servers
- 18:32and lots of legislation.
- 18:35Uh I won't deny one thing that I don't
- 18:40want to spend the rest of my life uh
- 18:43sitting in some uh courtroom being
- 18:46harassed and interrogated by a
- 18:49disgruntled discharged employee. That I
- 18:52will frankly admit. And
- 18:55uh uh so uh if
- 19:00uh if uh the serving of a process would
- 19:05mean endless hours of exposure to uh
- 19:10harassment, interruption of what work I
- 19:13want to do before I die.
- 19:16Uh, I can certainly say I don't want it
- 19:19and I don't uh relish it and uh I would
- 19:23uh certainly not welcome it or encourage
- 19:25it or make it easy.
- 19:29So this has a real bearing on what
- 19:31you're going to do with the rest of your
- 19:32life, does it not?
- 19:34I think
- 19:35u I think this
- 19:38uh defends to a great measure on what
- 19:41I'm able to do about the very things
- 19:45that we've been discussing. In other
- 19:47words, uh the lawsuit with TWWA which
- 19:51has
- 19:52uhounded me for 11 years now and
- 19:57uh now this may affair
- 20:00uh and now we're talking about another
- 20:03one the time
- 20:07McGroill situation.
- 20:11It it seems to have the appearance that
- 20:14I'm going to spend the rest of my life
- 20:16in the
- 20:16courtroom. I I don't
- 20:20know. I don't know why people are given
- 20:23such broad latitude to
- 20:26uh
- 20:29uh influence the lives of others or to
- 20:33uh interfere with them, whatever you
- 20:36want to call it. But
- 20:38uh that uh seems to be our way of life.
- 20:42And uh so until I can get some of these
- 20:46uh issues in which I am the uh
- 20:50defendant, so to speak, until I get some
- 20:52of these issues put to rest, I can't
- 20:54really make any definitive plans. Thank
- 20:57you, sir. Mr. Hughes, we've heard all
- 20:59sorts of stories about your requiring
- 21:02special medication and uh this and that.
- 21:06uh because of your health. What is the
- 21:08real story of your personal health at
- 21:10this time? Well, how the hell is
- 21:13anybody's health at 66 years of
- 21:17age? I certainly don't feel like uh
- 21:20running around uh a track at UCLA and
- 21:25trying to break a record. I can tell you
- 21:27that. But uh my health
- 21:31is tolerable. That's that's uh certain.
- 21:35and probably better than I deserved it.
- 21:37Mr. Hughes, is it possible that you are
- 21:40considering at this time returning to
- 21:42the to flying to to piloting your own
- 21:46aircraft yourself again? Uh this is I
- 21:49know is a bug that no aviator ever gets
- 21:51out of his blood. Uh to piloting
- 21:54aircraft, right? Yes. Positively. Uh
- 21:57there's nothing in your physical
- 21:58condition would prevent anything like
- 22:00that. No, as a matter of fact, it would
- 22:01be the best thing in the world for me
- 22:03and only contemplated it but planned it
- 22:05definitely and uh it will I think uh be
- 22:10uh the best conceivable uh therapy for
- 22:14me because
- 22:16uh well it's just uh something that uh I
- 22:21like doing rather than something I don't
- 22:23like doing. And uh uh it's good for me
- 22:27in every way. So,
- 22:30uh, I I definitely expect to recommence
- 22:34a program of flying. I'd like to ask you
- 22:36also in reference to your the, uh,
- 22:40assistance and also the contributions
- 22:42you've made to various medical
- 22:44organizations uh, in Nevada and in
- 22:47Boston and elsewhere. Do you feel that
- 22:49this is one of the areas in which you
- 22:51can use your wealth and uh uh some of
- 22:55your special technical knowledge for the
- 22:57general benefit of the country? Well, in
- 23:00that I am most interested and uh
- 23:03eventually uh that's where the bulk of
- 23:06my estate will
- 23:08go. In other words, uh there's nothing
- 23:11that interests me more than medical
- 23:14research and
- 23:16uh the uh
- 23:20uh quest
- 23:22for better living facilities and
- 23:27uh
- 23:29better health and better uh medical
- 23:33standards uh not only uh in the United
- 23:36States but throughout the world. This
- 23:38this uh to me is
- 23:42uh where we should be concentrating our
- 23:45greatest
- 23:46effort. In fact
- 23:48uh
- 23:51uh possibly
- 23:54uh I might say that uh I feel it could
- 23:57be more important than some of the space
- 23:59activity. Mr. Hughes, all the legends
- 24:02that have grown up around you
- 24:04uh some of them repeatable, some not
- 24:07repeatable. But one of the funniest is
- 24:08supposed to be about your prediliction
- 24:12for wearing tennis shoes. Can you tell
- 24:14us how that one got started?
- 24:18Uh I don't. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Oh yes.
- 24:22Sure I do. Sure I do. Sure I do.
- 24:26Uh they started when I had a pair of uh
- 24:31You remember when shoes were rationed
- 24:34uh during uh World War II? Yeah. When
- 24:38you had to have a ticket uh to to buy uh
- 24:42leather shoes, there were shoes made of
- 24:45non-stategic
- 24:47material, some kind of uh canvas or
- 24:50imitation
- 24:51leather. And uh I had a pair of these
- 24:55that uh I liked and
- 24:58wore. And uh these were termed by some
- 25:02newsmen tennis shoes. They weren't
- 25:04really tennis shoes at all. They were
- 25:07simply uh a shoe that was sold
- 25:11uh in normal shoe stores and which did
- 25:14not require
- 25:16uh a ration coupon uh to procure them.
- 25:20In other words, they were non-strategic
- 25:23material. And that is uh where that one
- 25:26came from because uh I haven't played
- 25:29tennis in quite a while. And uh I I'm
- 25:34certain they didn't come from uh any
- 25:36exposure on the tennis court or any
- 25:39appearance in what were truly tennis
- 25:42shoes. But the uh the uh tennis shoe
- 25:45story definitely derived from these gray
- 25:51green colored
- 25:54uh I think that's what you call them.
- 25:57Mostly gray. Gray green. Yeah.
- 25:59uh um nonstrategic
- 26:03uh semic. Well, no, they weren't campus.
- 26:07They were uh they were an imitation
- 26:09uh uh shoe leather and I'm certain they
- 26:13would not rank as campus in the normal
- 26:16sense. Mr. Hughes, while we're on sport,
- 26:19uh there are a lot of stories about you
- 26:22and golf. Uh back in the days when you
- 26:25were I guess you were a scratch handicap
- 26:28at Riviera Country Club right to there.
- 26:31I was never lower than two. Well, that's
- 26:34that's definitely excellent. But the
- 26:37story goes that uh at this time you went
- 26:41into Willie Hunter the pro at Riviera
- 26:43and said Willie do you think I could
- 26:45beat Bobby Jones in the national amateur
- 26:47and Willie said no and you put your
- 26:50clubs down then and never played after
- 26:52that. Oh that's absurd. That's absurd. I
- 26:55had a game with Bobby in Pebble
- 26:58Beach. Was very proud of the experience
- 27:01and uh it was one of my treasured uh
- 27:05memories. You remember how you did in
- 27:07that match with him?
- 27:09Uh well, I didn't at any time uh contest
- 27:15against him. In other words, uh at no
- 27:18time was I on a level or uh
- 27:23uh at no time did I play the kind of
- 27:26golf to
- 27:27uh challenge Bobby Jones. That I assure
- 27:30you. But I did have a game in which he
- 27:34was a participant. Whether it was a
- 27:37foresome or a threesome, I don't
- 27:38remember. But uh we did play Pebble
- 27:41Beach and he uh was a part of the match
- 27:45and it was one of my treasured memories.
- 27:48This is this is going way back though.
- 27:50Jesus, this is really a long time ago.
- 27:53Mr. Hughes, this seems to have gone
- 27:55extremely well today. And I think that a
- 27:58lot of people will have an idea of you
- 28:00as a person that uh has not been this
- 28:05clear before. And uh under the
- 28:08circumstances, I want to suggest to you
- 28:09that as soon as you feel possible that
- 28:12you have a face-to-face interview with
- 28:15the the press group uh once more and
- 28:18hope that you can do this shortly. Well,
- 28:20this has been proposed to me by my
- 28:22people and uh I definitely expect to do
- 28:25it. That's the intend to do it. And
- 28:28could you say um anything at all about
- 28:30your time schedule on your own plans to,
- 28:34as you say, come out in the open again
- 28:36to a degree? Well, no. I can't give you
- 28:40a precise time, but I will say that uh I
- 28:44certainly uh intend to do it as soon as
- 28:48I am able to and
- 28:51uh can do so without
- 28:54uh
- 28:56uh collateral disadvantages of some
- 28:59type. In other words, as soon as Davis
- 29:02and uh some of my associates uh tell me
- 29:06that uh I can do these things, I am
- 29:09ready and uh waiting when you do u come
- 29:15back into general circulation, Mr.
- 29:17Hughes, uh uh does it ever cross your
- 29:20mind that you'd like to uh make some
- 29:22movies again? I would like to. I I have
- 29:25always thought that uh in my
- 29:30years when I couldn't be quite as active
- 29:32as I was at the time I flew around the
- 29:35world. I've always sort of thought that
- 29:40movies and motion pictures would be
- 29:42something I could do even up uh to my
- 29:46last day, so to speak. In other words,
- 29:50uh it's not something that uh requires
- 29:54great uh
- 29:58uh physical
- 30:00resourcefulness or
- 30:03physical resources. It's not something
- 30:06that
- 30:07requires in other words great youth or
- 30:10great strength. Jesus Christ wrestled
- 30:12the mail pictures until he was way way
- 30:16uh beyond my age.
- 30:18And so uh I have always thought that in
- 30:24the later years of my life I would like
- 30:26very very much to make some motion
- 30:29pictures that would be truly worthwhile.
- 30:31Well, I mean, the ones I made before
- 30:34were entertaining, and I've seen some of
- 30:38them uh in the light of what's showing
- 30:41on television now, movies of the same
- 30:44vintage, in other words, and they they
- 30:47stand up pretty well. In these later
- 30:49years, uh, your Scarface and Hell's
- 30:52Angels
- 30:53have come to be considered classics.
- 30:56Really?
- 30:58Well, at least they still don't look too
- 31:01damn bad alongside of the other pictures
- 31:04of that same period. I mean, I'm not
- 31:07claiming they're uh competitive with our
- 31:12latest uh
- 31:14uh Santa Gulp
- 31:16and this division and
- 31:20uh uh all the various new processes and
- 31:23so forth. uh I I don't pretend that uh
- 31:26what I did is competitive with today's
- 31:30uh artistic methods and uh uh the the
- 31:35materials and the uh
- 31:38uh techniques that are available today
- 31:41are so far beyond anything I had that it
- 31:44would be absurd to say that you could
- 31:46look at uh one of my pictures and
- 31:48compare them with today's output and uh
- 31:52claim that they compare favor favorably,
- 31:54but they sure as hell compare favorably
- 31:57with the pictures of their same uh years
- 32:01or that were made in those years. And
- 32:04I've noticed that on television on the
- 32:06film showing on television, I've been
- 32:09pretty uh pleased with the way mine have
- 32:12stood up even though they didn't get
- 32:16Academy Awards. Well, I think uh one of
- 32:20one of them got some kind of an award,
- 32:22but uh uh in general, my movies were not
- 32:27considered artistic classics. And uh
- 32:31uh so from that standpoint, I have
- 32:34nothing to boast about. But if you look
- 32:38at them on television today compared to
- 32:42uh the ones that are playing and remain
- 32:45in the same period, they uh hold
- 32:48together pretty well.
- 32:51Mr. Hughes, so many people have been
- 32:52intrigued by the fact that you seem to
- 32:54do a lot of your business on the
- 32:56telephone. In fact, I from what we hear
- 32:5995% of it is by telephone and you talk
- 33:03to people. you appear direct them from
- 33:06one end of a telephone line and they're
- 33:08at the other end and uh it it seems a
- 33:11little unusual and would I wonder if
- 33:12you'd tell us why and how you do this.
- 33:16Yes. Uh yes, I've always done my
- 33:18business over the phone, but uh uh other
- 33:21than that fact uh I certainly do. And
- 33:24I'll say something else. The world is
- 33:27moving toward doing more of its business
- 33:29over the telephone rather than in
- 33:31person. I mean uh top business
- 33:33executives all over the world uh are
- 33:36learning that they can make uh 25 26 27
- 33:40telephone calls in a day and transact uh
- 33:45uh let's say x amount of business in
- 33:47each one. And if he tried to see all
- 33:49those people personally with the traffic
- 33:52and all the rest of the delays involved
- 33:55uh the figure instead of 26 and 7 would
- 33:57be uh maybe uh six or seven or in that
- 34:02region. In other words, uh uh people
- 34:04have found that by doing business on the
- 34:06telephone, uh they can do about four
- 34:08times as much in one day as they can do
- 34:10in person, particularly if they live in
- 34:12New York or some city that is
- 34:15a beehive of activity from a traffic
- 34:18standpoint. You have so much money
- 34:21invested in Las Vegas, Mr. Hughes and
- 34:25now you have left there. A great many
- 34:28people are wondering what you're going
- 34:30to do about these investments. Uh how do
- 34:33you see this uh in Nevada picture? Are
- 34:36you going to hold on to your hotels? Can
- 34:39you tell us something about this? I tell
- 34:41you one thing, I have no intention of
- 34:43selling anything that involves any
- 34:45employment. In other words, I have no
- 34:48intention of selling any of the active
- 34:51businesses that you've just mentioned,
- 34:53the hotels or uh the house club in
- 34:58uh Reno or any of my uh activities in
- 35:02Nevada uh which account for the huge
- 35:06employment I have in Nevada. I have no
- 35:08intention of selling any of those. Now,
- 35:11as to whether I sell any of the unused
- 35:15real estate,
- 35:16uh that's something that will depend
- 35:18upon how I feel Nevada will treat me uh
- 35:22when I return there and uh what happens
- 35:25with this man made you. Mr.
- 35:28Hughes, your troubles with Congress and
- 35:31with the Senate back in
- 35:331947 involved your Spruce Goose, the big
- 35:37flying boat, and you completed it and
- 35:41flew it very briefly, and you've
- 35:44retained it all these years, and it's
- 35:46still there in the hangar. What are you
- 35:48going to do when the when the lease runs
- 35:50out? What will you do with the boat? Oh,
- 35:53brother, I can't answer that one today.
- 35:57I just don't don't have an answer for
- 35:59that today. I'll tell you one thing,
- 36:03there's a lot that still can be learned
- 36:05from that airplane.
- 36:07And uh I feel before anything is done
- 36:11with it that might be in the nature of
- 36:14uh uh destructive or damaging
- 36:18uh we should uh uh utilize it to the
- 36:22fullest and uh obtain all of the data
- 36:25that still can be obtained from it which
- 36:28is uh a great deal more than most people
- 36:34realize. Mr. Hughes, one final question.
- 36:37We all know that you are one of the
- 36:39wealthiest men in the world. Your wealth
- 36:42is estimated at $2.5 billion
- 36:44dollars. And yet you seem to be having
- 36:47your troubles. We'd like to
- 36:50ask, are you a happy man today?
- 36:55I'm uh I'm not not very happy, I'll tell
- 36:58you that. And uh one of the primary
- 37:01reasons is because of some of the things
- 37:04we've been discussing here. uh tonight.
- 37:07That is to say, in other words, the the
- 37:10impediment impediments upon my freedom
- 37:12and uh uh activities imposed by all of
- 37:16this litigation and uh these overhanging
- 37:20uh threats of uh various types uh this
- 37:25uh threatened autobiography and so
- 37:27forth. All these matters are uh very
- 37:31draining in their effect upon me. And
- 37:35uh so
- 37:38uh if you uh well your question was am I
- 37:42happy and content? The answer is no.
- 37:50And now
- 37:51listener listeners we have come to the
- 37:55end of the interview with Mr.
- 37:58Hughes. You have heard his voice on two
- 38:01momentuous
- 38:02occasions. The first one in the 1947
- 38:05Brewster hearings when his affairs were
- 38:09in
- 38:10crisis and now once more when they are
- 38:13at least in the public eye
- 38:18intensive inspection by the public at
- 38:20large. He talked from Paradise Island,
- 38:23Nassau in the
- 38:25Bahamas.
- 38:27And you have an opportunity, a unique
- 38:31opportunity here to compare the the the
- 38:35voice of Mr. Hughes who was present in
- 38:37person at the
- 38:38first instance and this time when he
- 38:42spoke by telephonic interview. You make
- 38:45the comparison and you decide for
- 38:46yourself that whether or not it was
- 38:49actually Howard Hughes and both
- 38:51occasions.
