How to Win When Everything Takes Longer Than Expected — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00It's always harder, takes longer, and
- 0:03costs more than you think it will. That
- 0:04is a reflection of poor expectations,
- 0:08not that the reality is bad. And so, it
- 0:11makes sense that it would be harder,
- 0:13take longer, and cost more because if it
- 0:16didn't, then everyone would have it. And
- 0:17if everyone had it, then it wouldn't be
- 0:18worthwhile. And so, literally the
- 0:20difficulty of the task that you embark
- 0:23on is proportional to the reward that
- 0:25you ultimately get because you are the
- 0:27asset that you build more than the
- 0:28achievement. And so, if it's hard,
- 0:30that's amazing because it will make you
- 0:32that much harder once you conquer it.
- 0:34And it will also make it harder for
- 0:35anybody else who wants to follow in your
- 0:37footsteps. And so, the higher up the
- 0:39mountain you climb, the thinner the air
- 0:40gets, and the rarer the climber or
- 0:43explorer must be in order to get there.
- 0:46And so, I don't know about you, but I
- 0:48would so much rather climb a mountain
- 0:50that so few people have been able to
- 0:51climb so that I can see a view that
- 0:53other people haven't seen. And so,
- 0:54speaking of expectations, let me talk
- 0:56about the worst expectation of all,
- 0:58which is entitlement, which is the
- 1:00expectation of life or other people to
- 1:02give you something without earning it.
- 1:04And I think that this is is a is a virus
- 1:07in today's culture right now. And so,
- 1:09there's the famous quote, "Hard times
- 1:11create strong men, strong men create
- 1:14good times, good times create weak men,
- 1:17and weak men create hard times." It
- 1:19makes sense that right now we have a lot
- 1:22of weak men because it's been pretty
- 1:24good times. The good news about that is
- 1:26that it's so easy to beat them. You just
- 1:28have to show up, be on time, prepare the
- 1:31night before, remember people's names,
- 1:34actually follow up when you say you were
- 1:36going to, and try like you mean it
- 1:39rather than trying like you want to get
- 1:41credit for trying. And I see this is
- 1:43this this thing that's that that's
- 1:45pervasive right now is that people will
- 1:48comment or they'll DM me and they're
- 1:50like, "Hey, I'm trying really hard." As
- 1:52though I'm supposed to give them credit
- 1:54for trying. The world doesn't work that
- 1:56way. It gives you credit for achieving.
- 1:59And the reason that you want credit for
- 2:00trying is because you want it to cost
- 2:02less, take shorter time period, and be
- 2:05easier. And so, if you restate your
- 2:08complaint about the difficulty as, "Oh,
- 2:11I have false expectations about the ease
- 2:13or the price tag of this goal." Then all
- 2:16of a sudden you realize that the only
- 2:17real problem was that you expected it to
- 2:19cost less. It's like going to the store
- 2:22and being like, "Oh, I've got these
- 2:23Jordans that I really want to buy. I got
- 2:25$50. I'm so excited to buy them." You go
- 2:27to the store and see that they're $300.
- 2:30At that point, you can just say,
- 2:31"Jordans aren't for me." Or you can say,
- 2:33"Oh, I will have to keep working and
- 2:35keep saving so that I can afford this."
- 2:37And so, it's a lot about affording the
- 2:39goals that you want to achieve. And a
- 2:42lot of things that we have to spend in
- 2:43order to get them is the time and the
- 2:46rejection of not achieving what we want
- 2:48on the timeline we originally thought.
- 2:50Like, what makes success hard is that
- 2:52the expectation that society puts
- 2:54because we only highlight reel. You
- 2:56actually only see people after they
- 2:58finish the race. People think success is
- 3:00like watching a marathon, not running a
- 3:02marathon. When you watch a marathon, you
- 3:05look at the beginning and you look at
- 3:06the end. It only takes you a couple of
- 3:08seconds to see both of those. But
- 3:10running a marathon is four, five, six
- 3:13straight hours of breathing heavy,
- 3:15wondering when it's going to end,
- 3:16counting starting to play games in your
- 3:18mind of like, "Okay, I'm I'm 2/3 of the
- 3:20way there. I'm two two more quarters of
- 3:22that. I'm only 1/5 of the of 1/8 of the
- 3:25way there." And you keep doing this to
- 3:27play tricks on your mind to keep going.
- 3:29But the thing is is that in a mile
- 3:31marker race, it's very clear to know how
- 3:33you're going to get to the finish line
- 3:34and how long it's going to take. The
- 3:36only difference with success is that you
- 3:38just have to keep running and you don't
- 3:39know where the finish line is. And
- 3:41people will only cheer you on at that
- 3:42finish line that they don't know where
- 3:44it is, either. Which means you have to
- 3:45get used to running alone. And so, the
- 3:47difficulty is
- 3:48you have to start running and you have
- 3:50to keep running, but you just don't know
- 3:53whether you're running for a mile or
- 3:55300. And so this is where the pacing is
- 3:58important. So a lot of people will run
- 4:00really hard. They'll they'll think
- 4:02because they only saw the beginning of
- 4:04the marathon on TV and the finish of the
- 4:06marathon on TV that they can just sprint
- 4:08because both of those clips only lasted
- 4:10a couple of seconds. So they start their
- 4:12marathon of success of whatever it is
- 4:14they're going after by sprinting as hard
- 4:16as they can. And then they realize that
- 4:19there's no one around and there's just a
- 4:21bunch of open road and ahead of them.
- 4:23And they're like, how long is this going
- 4:24to take? And that's when reality sets
- 4:26in. And so I make these videos to say
- 4:28that a lot of times it's going to take
- 4:31longer. Real quick, if you're a business
- 4:33owner and you are not growing as fast as
- 4:35you'd like, I'd like to give you a free
- 4:36gift. So my team and I put together the
- 4:39$100 million scaling road map, which is
- 4:41basically 200 hours of us looking over
- 4:42all the portfolio companies we've had
- 4:44and what stages of growth they went
- 4:46through and more importantly where they
- 4:48got stuck and how they got past it. And
- 4:50so we broke it into these 10 stages and
- 4:52we made this little kind of quiz thing
- 4:53where if you put in your business
- 4:54information, it'll tell you where you're
- 4:56at and the most important part for you,
- 4:57what to do for each of functions of the
- 4:59business across product, marketing,
- 5:00sales, customer success, recruiting, IT,
- 5:02human resources, and finance. And so no
- 5:05matter what you're struggling with,
- 5:06someone else has already struggled with
- 5:08it and solved it. And so I'd like to
- 5:10give you this thing absolutely free. You
- 5:11can go to acquisition.com/roadmap,
- 5:13plug in your business information, and
- 5:14if you want us to actually help you
- 5:17deconstruct the business and you're
- 5:18trying to scale, we'd love to help you
- 5:20out. On the thank you page you can book
- 5:21a call with my team and we will
- 5:24look at the business, see if we can
- 5:25help, and if we can, we'll invite you
- 5:26out to Vegas and we'll do this in person
- 5:28live.
