  2. 0:07hello my name is Christopher Jacqueline
  3. 0:10I'm a professional opera singer and
  4. 0:11singing teacher based in London and I'm
  5. 0:13going to talk to you today about singing
  6. 0:15technique I'm going to talk to you now
  7. 0:17about how to train a voice to sing tenor
  8. 0:19tenor is the highest male voice it goes
  9. 0:22base then baritone which is what I am
  10. 0:24and then a tenor at the top the ability
  11. 0:27to sing high notes is obviously crucial
  12. 0:29to being a tenor and there are lots of
  13. 0:31little exercises you can try to find out
  14. 0:32whether you actually are one but now I'm
  15. 0:34going to talk to you about a couple of
  16. 0:35issues which are specific to training a
  17. 0:37tenor voice one quality that is really
  18. 0:40characteristic of a tenor voice is
  19. 0:41something called imposter it's an
  20. 0:43italian term that refers to that kind of
  21. 0:45ping or buzz that a lot of singers have
  22. 0:47tenors really rely on this sound
  23. 0:50it comes from accessing the resonance in
  24. 0:52the nasal cavity a really good exercise
  25. 0:54to do this is this one so you start with
  26. 1:02an NG sound and sound and slide all the
  27. 1:05way up to the high note and then release
  28. 1:06if you do that and you maintain your
  29. 1:09support all the way through you should
  30. 1:11find that you have a full-bodied sound
  31. 1:13that you open up to but you'll keep that
  32. 1:15nasal bass
  33. 1:16another key thing that tenors need to
  34. 1:17learn how to do is to sing in the head
  35. 1:19voice the head voice is that light part
  36. 1:22of the voice that lies in between the
  37. 1:23chest voice and the falsetto sound
  38. 1:25sounds a bit like this a good exercise
  39. 1:31for accessing this is this
  40. 1:39ah so making a very light sound you
  41. 1:42slide up and down a fifth make sure you
  42. 1:45always slide between the notes it's a
  43. 1:47way of maintaining the connection
  44. 1:48between the middle of your voice and the
  45. 1:50next place the head voice that you're
  46. 1:51trying to get into as you get higher up
  47. 1:54in the voice will hit the passaggio
  48. 1:55which is the break where the two voices
  49. 1:57meet what will want to happen when you
  50. 2:00get at this point is the larynx will
  51. 2:01want to rise you want to keep that nice
  52. 2:08and relaxed to maintain the freedom in
  53. 2:09the sound it'll feel like it's wanting
  54. 2:12to narrow but don't worry go with that
  55. 2:14and you should emerge out of your sight
  56. 2:15into this really light airy spacious
  57. 2:18head voice negotiating the passaggio is
  58. 2:21a really key issue to singing tenor tena
  59. 2:24spend a lot of time in this register
  60. 2:26it's not just about getting to the high
  61. 2:28note it's also about how you negotiate a
  62. 2:30space in between
  63. 2:31to do this efficiently you need to
  64. 2:33slightly modify the space at the back of
  65. 2:35the throat
  66. 2:36where the pharynx is the easiest way to
  67. 2:38think about that is it going from a kind
  68. 2:40of open are shape to singing off at the
  69. 2:43back of the throat
  70. 2:44so going ah so I want to do this little
  71. 2:50exercise the same as we did before but
  72. 2:51with a bit more sound behind it now at
  73. 3:00that pitch we can keep the sound open
  74. 3:02but as we get higher we need to start
  75. 3:03applying this modification so take that
  76. 3:06that exercise up step by step
  77. 3:09[Music]
  78. 3:14ah when I get to that high note I need
  79. 3:18to change the space at the bank and I
  80. 3:20basically go from singing are at the
  81. 3:22bottom to singing or at the top that's
  82. 3:25how to sing in the passaggio
  83. 3:30[Music]
