HOW TO TALK LIKE A GIRL GOOD: RESONANCE ( great for beginners! MTF TRANS VOICE ) — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Are you tired of trans voice tutorials
- 0:02that require either a linguistics degree
- 0:04or a sound engineering degree to even
- 0:06understand it? Would you like a tutorial
- 0:08that could be comprehended by literal
- 0:105-year-olds? Here it is. Learn to change
- 0:13the voice from this [music] to this. How
- 0:16to trans voice resonance. Let's make
- 0:18this make sense.
- 0:24I'm okay.
- 0:30The last residence video was 2 years
- 0:32ago, so I've learned a lot since I made
- 0:34that video. So, consider this video a
- 0:36bit of a cleanup job.
- 0:37>> We still get emails about that one error
- 0:39you made.
- 0:40>> Yeah. So, there's a few ways to learn
- 0:41[music] resonance. One of them is bubble
- 0:43phonation, which I have a video on.
- 0:45Today's video is about a different
- 0:47technique. But if this technique doesn't
- 0:49resonate, then feel free to find another
- 0:51video. using this voice as a bass
- 0:53resonance is basically moving the voice
- 0:55forward like this so that you can change
- 0:57the [music] overall sound and then with
- 0:59other stuff it will sound great but this
- 1:01is just a small building block point
- 1:03you're kind of moving the voice forwards
- 1:04like this and making it [music] in this
- 1:05kind of spot that's the rough thing
- 1:07that's different as opposed to like back
- 1:08here I'm moving it forward here consider
- 1:11it a forward motion so first off we
- 1:14don't do a resonance instead resonance
- 1:17is like a quality of the voice similar
- 1:19to how there's high pitches and low
- 1:21pitches es. [music] There is bright and
- 1:24dark resonance. If you want to do a girl
- 1:26voice good, like the title says, then
- 1:29you want a bright resonance. A bright
- 1:32resonance voice is strong and clear with
- 1:34the vocal folds barely touching. Without
- 1:37good resonance, our voice is going to
- 1:39sound a bit weak and hard to hear. Let's
- 1:42imagine this window is the vocal folds.
- 1:45You want the voice to travel right
- 1:47through it without smacking into THE
- 1:49SIDE.
- 1:56WE DON'T WANT OUR VOICE TO bump around
- 1:58with our vocal folds too much cuz otherw
- 2:00other otherwise
- 2:02we won't be able to get bright
- 2:04resonance. [laughter]
- 2:06So, let's learn an exercise
- 2:10so we can build muscle memory of what
- 2:13bright resonance feels like so that you
- 2:17can utilize it when speaking.
- 2:20When doing the following exercise, just
- 2:22know we're grabbing the vibration over
- 2:25there and slapping it up here. We are
- 2:30moving it. Resonance is the shape of the
- 2:33voice as it moves from here
- 2:36to here.
- 2:39Now for the fun part. Here's the part
- 2:41where we actually get to do something
- 2:42and make changes. [music] So techniques
- 2:44in trans voice are just various
- 2:46exercises to engage muscles so you know
- 2:48what they feel like so you can
- 2:49manipulate them on command. What's
- 2:51today's silly sound, you might ask?
- 2:56I've organized our criteria into four
- 2:58B's. These are what we're looking for
- 3:00when we're making these sound. Now, why
- 3:02is it four B's? Well, the M sound kind
- 3:06of sounds like a buzzy little bee. So, I
- 3:09thought it was cute. Step one is
- 3:11brightness, lovely audience. If you can
- 3:12already raise your larynx from the
- 3:14larynx video, you already have this part
- 3:16sorted cuz the larynx and resonance,
- 3:18well, they're a team. They work
- 3:19together, right? If you haven't seen the
- 3:20larynx video, the short version is
- 3:22making like a
- 3:26sound and making that little ball move
- 3:28up a little bit to avoid the vocal folds
- 3:30touching too much. Wait, not that high.
- 3:32But once you learn that and you apply
- 3:34this to this, if you have trouble doing
- 3:36both at the same time, you can actually
- 3:38do both techniques together and smush it
- 3:40like a little sandwich. A ham sandwich.
- 3:42We can make like a little ham
- 3:46sound like that to bring it together. If
- 3:49you have trouble with this first step, I
- 3:51call this the ham method. Get it? But
- 3:54random YouTuber, there's two larynx
- 3:56videos. Which one do I watch after this
- 3:58video? Uh, that one. I like that one
- 4:00more. This one's better. Up next is
- 4:02buzziness. When you're making this h
- 4:05sound, try to see if you can feel
- 4:07vibration coming from your lips. I mean,
- 4:10literally grabbing your finger, placing
- 4:11it on your mouth, and seeing if you can
- 4:13feel vibration. Different people
- 4:15experience this vibration sensation a
- 4:16little differently. So, if you don't
- 4:18find this technique works for you, feel
- 4:19free to try the bubble phonation
- 4:21technique as that might work a little
- 4:22better. They do the same thing. It's
- 4:24just whichever you find easier. That
- 4:26said, no one gets things first try. So,
- 4:28let's keep going. When we make this
- 4:29sound, imagine your mouth is a dam. Try
- 4:33to get your voice to be an intense flash
- 4:35of water that bumps right against the
- 4:38dam.
- 4:45Not like a
- 4:48We want it to be more.
- 4:52Yeah. Step three, breathing. Without
- 4:54strong resonance, our voice lacks power.
- 4:56Without good breathing, though, then we
- 4:58can't get strong resonance. A lack of
- 5:00strong resonance is sometimes why a lot
- 5:02of people sound a little weak when doing
- 5:03a girl voice. So, let's chill in this
- 5:06part of the video and focus on our
- 5:08breathing.
- 5:12Sure
- 5:17the algorithm love that one. Our last
- 5:19criteria, lovely audience, beyond
- 5:22forwardness. That kind of forwardness
- 5:24that I alluded to at the start of the
- 5:25video. So, we're going to master our
- 5:28fume. This is a bit of a mental trick.
- 5:30Sound in general, of course, bounces off
- 5:33any surface. That's how sound works. But
- 5:36humor me for a moment. Let's imagine our
- 5:39voice as an energy source that exists
- 5:41within the body. Imagine that energy
- 5:44moving from the chest to the front of
- 5:46our mouth. I essentially want you to
- 5:49imagine where the voice spawns. Pay
- 5:51attention to where you feel your voice
- 5:53come into existence.
- 5:55You want to move that spawn point to
- 5:58your mouth rather than the lower parts
- 6:01of your chest or the lower parts of your
- 6:03throat. We're moving our spawn point,
- 6:06our energy. This is a metaphor to trick
- 6:09your muscles into doing the things that
- 6:11we need it to do. Imagine the energy or
- 6:14the spawn point of your voice starting
- 6:16there and then move it up there. When we
- 6:19make this m sound, you want to imagine
- 6:24that moving there. When doing this, you
- 6:26might actually feel your tongue move up
- 6:28a little bit. That's pretty normal. When
- 6:30we do a bright resonant voice, our
- 6:31tongue actually raises a little bit,
- 6:33which actually helps alter the sound a
- 6:35little bit. When you try the buzzy M
- 6:37this time, imagine your voice knocking
- 6:39over those liquids over there. You want
- 6:42to imagine your voice forwards.
- 6:46You might even want to push your hands
- 6:49through.
- 6:52Try to replicate the sound.
- 6:56[sighs and gasps] Yeah, not bad. So,
- 6:58we're combining all that together to
- 6:59create our final product so that we do
- 7:02all the steps like avoiding that window
- 7:04from olio, having that [music] forward
- 7:06sound, having a buzzy sound, and
- 7:08breathing. With the buzzym technique to
- 7:10practice it, we can slap it in front of
- 7:12vowels, words, sentences, the pokey rap,
- 7:16paragraphs, the entirety of a free. Uh,
- 7:19but now let's start with vow, shall we?
- 7:21So we're basically going to make this
- 7:22kind of
- 7:25kind of sound and go for each vow. So it
- 7:28would kind of sound like
- 7:39you won't feel vibration in your lips
- 7:40once you open your mouth because well we
- 7:43broke the dam so to speak. We've allowed
- 7:45the resonance to go flying into the
- 7:47sunset. But if it's buzzing on your lips
- 7:50before you open your mouth, then you're
- 7:51all good. A, E, and I are bright sounds,
- 7:54so these might be a little easier. Try
- 7:56making the sounds A, E, I, and you'll
- 7:58feel the muscles towards the front of
- 8:00your mouth activate. Whereas Ooh, you'll
- 8:03feel at the back the dark souls of
- 8:05resonance.
- 8:06>> It's just a little harder with these
- 8:07sounds. You might feel like the voice is
- 8:09being like pulled back, so to speak, but
- 8:12you'll get the hang of it. Here's me
- 8:13doing it again.
- 8:16M.
- 8:28You don't have to say vows the way I do.
- 8:30I'm Australian. I say vowels
- 8:32differently. [music]
- 8:33It's okay. Some potential issues to
- 8:35troubleshoot if you're not quite getting
- 8:37it. Is the larynx raised? Is the window
- 8:41from earlier being passed through
- 8:42without clipping our legs? Are we doing
- 8:45the big big breath before making the
- 8:47sounds? Is our tongue raised a little
- 8:49bit? Was the M part extra buzzy
- 8:52sounding? We can do words, too. So,
- 8:54let's just grab M. Milkshake.
- 8:58Milkshake. Watch out for that C-C.
- 9:02Those can be a bit tricky when doing
- 9:03this exercise. Lucy, is it true you
- 9:06claimed CO is a fricative despite
- 9:07obviously being alosive? Um, yeah, I
- 9:10did. I did. It was 2 years ago. Lucy,
- 9:12why would you reference linguistic
- 9:13terminology despite wanting to avoid
- 9:16jargon in your videos? Look, it was two
- 9:18years ago. Give me a break. If you
- 9:20didn't understand anything in that part
- 9:21of the skit, that's fine. I'm just
- 9:24fixing up a mistake from 2 years ago.
- 9:27Back to the tutorial. If we were to use
- 9:29words, we would just go
- 9:31milkshake.
- 9:33For example, if we did a sentence, we
- 9:35could go
- 9:37milkshakes
- 9:38are tasty. Nice and long like that, like
- 9:42we're summoning something. Then
- 9:44afterwards, we do it a little quicker
- 9:46than we can do it in a regular speaking
- 9:47rhythm. Consider this exercise like
- 9:50getting into a good stance in martial
- 9:52arts. It's our strong foundation. So
- 9:55once we get that stance, we can go back
- 9:58to where we were. Once we practice the,
- 10:00you know, smooth movements that lead to
- 10:02that stance, but eventually we can just,
- 10:04you know, lock into it, right? Once you
- 10:06get better at it. This is similar to how
- 10:08trans voice works in this case.
- 10:11Milkshake.
- 10:13You know, getting comfortable with that
- 10:14stance, right? Then we pause, reset, and
- 10:18then we're going to try to milkshake.
- 10:21So, we're getting into that stance much
- 10:23quicker and stronger. But the previous
- 10:25instance was good for getting our
- 10:27position right. So, in full sequence of
- 10:29practice would be kind of like going
- 10:32milkshakes are tasty.
- 10:36Nugshakes are tasty.
- 10:38>> Remember, practice makes perfect.
- 10:44>> I thought you were ready.
- 11:03No.
- 11:09Hey lovely audience. I hope you enjoyed
- 11:10this video about resonance. The last one
- 11:13was like nearly two three years ago now.
- 11:15Wild. That video is kind of why I have a
- 11:18career in the first place. So I'm very
- 11:20thankful of the opportunity to get to
- 11:22try again and make the video better. I
- 11:25took on quite a lot of feedback from
- 11:26that last video to be honest and a lot
- 11:28of people told me things, you know, the
- 11:30more egregious mistakes and I tried my
- 11:32best to fix them up. But you might be
- 11:34curious about the fact that the
- 11:35technique is about the same. The reason
- 11:37for that is I still think that part of
- 11:39the video was pretty good and I want to
- 11:42stand by it and have confidence in my
- 11:44own work. So I understand that the kind
- 11:46of Ford resonance technique is come out
- 11:50of favor a little bit with trans voice
- 11:52coaches on the internet. However,
- 11:54professional speech paths still use it.
- 11:56I don't know if that's an instance of
- 11:57them being outdated or that's just what
- 11:59the technique they use, [music] but at
- 12:00least for me, it was a technique that
- 12:02gave me my voice. So, I'm a bit biased,
- 12:06but I like this technique because it
- 12:08gave me the greatest gift of all, right?
- 12:11Um, so that's why I teach this specific
- 12:14method and other videos don't.
- 12:16Understand that other people may not
- 12:18like this technique. If this video and
- 12:20technique did not work at all, feel free
- 12:22to try the bubble fination video. That
- 12:24might make more sense to you. that's
- 12:25perfectly fine. Just understand that um
- 12:28I think this is a really good resonance
- 12:29technique and I think it's more
- 12:30simplified. I've tried explaining the
- 12:33whole resonance chamber thing to Patreon
- 12:35students. Um people kind of come out of
- 12:38it more confused than anything. So I've
- 12:40kind of stopped doing that. I understand
- 12:44that's technically more correct and that
- 12:45focus of the specifics are important.
- 12:48However, the reason the old videos did
- 12:50well was it being hyper simple. And uh
- 12:54as a result, we're gonna keep the videos
- 12:57hyper simple.
- 12:59That's all there is to it. Stay hydrated
- 13:00and know that you are valid. I'll see
- 13:02you next time.
