- 0:02Well, hello and welcome to this ultra
- 0:05casual, super relaxed English lesson.
- 0:08And if you're wondering why it's
- 0:10ultra relaxed, super casual, it's
- 0:12because today is a holiday.
- 0:15So in this English lesson, I want
- 0:16to teach you some words and phrases
- 0:18we use when we're talking
- 0:19about a holiday or a day off.
- 0:21The first phrase I want
- 0:23to teach you is long weekend.
- 0:25Right now it is a long weekend
- 0:27in my part of Canada, and it is a long
- 0:29weekend because instead of
- 0:31Saturday and Sunday off, I actually
- 0:33have three days off from work.
- 0:35Now a long weekend can apply to school
- 0:37or work, it doesn't matter which.
- 0:39But it's definitely a long weekend
- 0:41here in my part of Canada.
- 0:43So a long weekend, three days instead
- 0:46of two for the weekend.
- 0:48But you might be wondering, does
- 0:49a long weekend include the Friday
- 0:51off or the Monday off?
- 0:54When we use the word off after a day, it
- 0:57means you don't have to go to work and,
- 0:58and you don't have to go to school.
- 1:00So this particular long weekend
- 1:02I had Monday off, I have today off.
- 1:05By the way, I'm recording
- 1:06this on Monday.
- 1:07You're probably watching this
- 1:08on a Tuesday where,
- 1:10I'm back at work on Tuesday.
- 1:11Anyways, so when someone has a long
- 1:14weekend, you can ask them, do you have
- 1:16Friday off or do you have Monday off?
- 1:19And you could even put the in front.
- 1:21You could say, do you have
- 1:22the Friday off or the Monday off
- 1:24for your upcoming long weekend?
- 1:26So in my case I had the Monday off,
- 1:28which is today, and it was wonderful.
- 1:30I spent most of the day relaxing
- 1:33and half of the day mowing lawn,
- 1:35which for me is a little bit more
- 1:37fun than work because I get to
- 1:39drive my riding mower when I do
- 1:41it.
- 1:41So it's a long weekend.
- 1:42Three days off.
- 1:43I had Monday off.
- 1:45There are other weekends, long
- 1:46weekends where you have Friday off.
- 1:48And again with a normal weekend,
- 1:50you just have Saturday or Sunday.
- 1:52But every once in a while
- 1:53during the school year or during
- 1:56the work year, for some people,
- 1:58there's a really special weekend
- 1:59called the four day weekend.
- 2:01And a four day weekend, as you might
- 2:03have guessed, you get the Friday
- 2:04off and you get the Monday off.
- 2:06They are rare.
- 2:08For me, I think I only get one or two
- 2:11a year where I have a four day weekend.
- 2:13And they are wonderful.
- 2:15Some people might create their own
- 2:17four day weekend if they know
- 2:19there's a long weekend coming up.
- 2:21They might ask for a personal day
- 2:23or they might ask for a day off
- 2:25on the Monday or Friday.
- 2:27So if they get the Friday off,
- 2:29they might ask the boss if they
- 2:30can have the Monday off as well.
- 2:32And they'll make their very
- 2:33own four day weekend.
- 2:34So they can ask for a personal day,
- 2:36which is a day where you can take
- 2:38off work and do whatever you want.
- 2:40Or they might just ask
- 2:41for a day off and if the boss is
- 2:42nice, they will say yes.
- 2:45So four day weekends, either
- 2:46you get one for real or
- 2:48sometimes you can make your own.
- 2:50So why am I doing this
- 2:53short lesson today?
- 2:54I'm doing this short lesson because
- 2:55I felt like taking the week off
- 2:58and not doing a lesson.
- 2:59But when I looked back over
- 3:01the year, I realized that I've
- 3:02taken some time off this year already
- 3:04and it was a nice day.
- 3:06I got all my work done
- 3:07early on my day off.
- 3:09I had a few extra minutes to spare.
- 3:11I thought, why don't I
- 3:11just go sit outside?
- 3:13I, I just mowed lawn, had a shower.
- 3:15I'm all cleaned up and relaxed.
- 3:17It's a beautiful day out here.
- 3:19I thought I would sit down and make
- 3:20an English lesson for you.
- 3:22So a few words and phrases that
- 3:23you can use to talk about the weekend,
- 3:25the long weekend, days off,
- 3:26personal days, asking for a day
- 3:28off and all of those things.
