How To Synchronize Logic Playback With Dorico Via MTC (& Why Other Playback Methods Are Really Bad) — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Hey everybody, Brian here. In today's
- 0:01video, I'm going to show you how to
- 0:03synchronize Logic with the Steinberg
- 0:05Doro notation software. So that from
- 0:08anywhere in Doro from its timeline, if
- 0:10you hit play, you're going to have time
- 0:12synchronized playback of the entire
- 0:14project in Logic at the corresponding
- 0:17time. So you end up with this kind of
- 0:19action. And take note of what Doro is
- 0:22displaying here and its bar and beach
- 0:24display along with Logic.
- 0:28Obviously,
- 0:43doing this kind of synchronization
- 0:45requires you have the MIDI in the
- 0:47notation editor, and that's a topic on
- 0:48its own. I'm not going to go into that,
- 0:50but I'm just going to real quickly show
- 0:51you the general approach that I take,
- 0:53which is for most of the MIDI tracks I
- 0:55have, a lot of them have humanized feel.
- 0:58Some of them are recorded on a MIDI
- 0:59keyboard. And so exporting that kind of
- 1:02MIDI directly into a notation editor is
- 1:05going to result in a nightmarish kind of
- 1:06notation. So what I tend to do is I
- 1:09create these duplicated tracks, the ones
- 1:13that have four notation in the title,
- 1:15and those ones just have cleaned up
- 1:17versions of the MIDI. They're not tracks
- 1:19that I want to have played back. They're
- 1:20just tracks that are going to be used to
- 1:22export MIDI so that it'll look fine in
- 1:24the editor without all sorts of crazy
- 1:2664th note rest and all that kind of
- 1:28nonsense. So, I'll make a separate video
- 1:31on exactly how I go about that if people
- 1:33are interested. But anyway, here's the
- 1:35project in Logic. This mounts to music
- 1:37that I wrote and guitar that I recorded
- 1:39to accompany a filming video from last
- 1:42year. We went to the New Hampshire and
- 1:44Maine Sea Coast which was a nice break
- 1:46from being in Moscow, the one in Russia,
- 1:48not the one in Idaho. So this has a
- 1:51combination of synth lead, synth pads,
- 1:53some plucky kind of instruments, some
- 1:55rhythmic kind of instruments, bases,
- 1:57drums, and the notation looks like this.
- 2:02That's the project in Doro. And before I
- 2:05get into how to go about doing the kind
- 2:07of synchronization I showed you at the
- 2:08beginning, I want to talk about the way
- 2:10people often do playback in the notation
- 2:13editor and why that can be very non
- 2:15ideal. So that'll give some motivation
- 2:17behind why it makes sense to do this
- 2:19kind of synchronization in the first
- 2:21place. Now here I am in Doro. This is
- 2:24the notated version of the music from
- 2:25the logic project. And it isn't super
- 2:28detailed notation, but I like to have
- 2:30notation of this sort because I can very
- 2:32readily get a highlevel overview of the
- 2:35music of what's going on. Whereas in
- 2:37Logic or any DAW, it's kind of difficult
- 2:39to get that kind of highlevel overview.
- 2:42It's tough to look at this and quickly
- 2:44see what's going on harmonically,
- 2:46melodically, rhythmically. Whereas here
- 2:48in this one single view, you get all
- 2:51that. It's kind of like looking at an
- 2:52architectural blueprint. So anyway, once
- 2:55you're in the notation editor, obviously
- 2:57you want to be able to play back. So one
- 2:59way people typically go about playing
- 3:00back in a notation editor is you just
- 3:02load up VSTs like you would in a DA.
- 3:04Even though in notation editors, you're
- 3:06typically a little more limited with
- 3:07what you can do, but anyway, you can
- 3:09load them up. So here in Doro under the
- 3:11VST and MIDI tab, you would have to load
- 3:14every single VST you plan on using, and
- 3:17you might have to fiddle with its
- 3:18presets, get everything how you wanted.
- 3:20And so that's obviously a decent amount
- 3:22of work. I've already done that. If I
- 3:24wanted to add something here, I would
- 3:26have to go all the way to the bottom,
- 3:28hit that plus button and go searching
- 3:30for VST. And in Duro, it's kind of
- 3:32weird. You don't have scroll bars here.
- 3:34So, you have to use the mouse scroll
- 3:35wheel or something to see what else is
- 3:37in that list. That can be kind of
- 3:39tedious. And then, not only that, you
- 3:41have to go back to this track inspector
- 3:43and then for every single track, you
- 3:45have to now choose one of those VSCs
- 3:48that you loaded. And I've already gone
- 3:49ahead and done that for this project.
- 3:51But things aren't quite that easy.
- 3:53There's some tricky moments that can
- 3:54come about. For instance, in my case,
- 3:57this choir in Logic, that choir part,
- 3:59it's multi- channelannel MIDI. So in
- 4:01this case, I was using various MIDI
- 4:03channels to play back different types of
- 4:04vowel sounds. So here in Opus, there's
- 4:07MIDI channel 1 2 3 4 for the A, E, O, oo
- 4:11sounds. But in this case, I just
- 4:13couldn't find a preset that had these as
- 4:15articulation switches, and I didn't want
- 4:17to create custom articulation switch
- 4:19version of this. So, it is what it is.
- 4:22In a Doro, that would take a good amount
- 4:23of work to set up the voices for this
- 4:25choir part and then arrange it so that
- 4:27Doro could could do independent voice
- 4:30playback. It's just a lot of extra work
- 4:32>> and also for percussion. Likewise, you'd
- 4:35have to do a lot of extra work to get
- 4:36decent looking notation and plus get the
- 4:39kind of playback you expect. And then
- 4:41not only do we deal with those kind of
- 4:43issues, I also have instruments in Logic
- 4:45that can only be played in Logic. So
- 4:47there'd be no way to actually play those
- 4:49back in Doro. For instance, this track
- 4:52that's labeled stutter stack, this heavy
- 4:55fifths, as well as the actual drum
- 4:57track, which is a Logic drummer part.
- 4:59And for those three, you would have to
- 5:01use Mac's IA MIDI driver. So for those
- 5:04particular tracks, I've already done
- 5:06that. The routing is to the IA driver
- 5:08bus one. For the drums, I've chosen
- 5:10channel 10. For the heavy fifths, I've
- 5:12chosen channel two. And for the stutter
- 5:14stack, I've chosen channel one. And then
- 5:17back in Logic, for each of those tracks,
- 5:20I have to tell it to listen to the
- 5:22driver. So I see driver bus one. The
- 5:25stutter stack, that's channel one. For
- 5:27those fifths, it was channel two. And
- 5:29then for drummer, it was channel 10. And
- 5:32for each of those tracks, I have to hit
- 5:34the I button so they're all listening
- 5:36in. Now with all that setup done, we can
- 5:39play it back in Doro.
- 6:24Now, right off the bat, the thing I
- 6:26noticed is the drums are way off, and
- 6:28that's because of the fact they were
- 6:29using a combination of the internal VST
- 6:32routing in Duro plus those instruments
- 6:35that are being routed to through that IA
- 6:37driver like the drums and so those are
- 6:40introducing some latency some delay and
- 6:43so you'd have to go through all sorts of
- 6:45pain to be able to get this kind of
- 6:47playback in sync and also you're not
- 6:49hearing any of the other production
- 6:50elements you're only hearing the VSTs
- 6:53producing their output so all the work I
- 6:55did on the production and logic the
- 6:57effects effects, all the mixing,
- 6:59everything involved in creating this
- 7:01production. I'm not going to have the
- 7:02benefit of hearing that in Duro. Now, a
- 7:05second way people tend to go about
- 7:07playback, at least on the Mac side, is
- 7:09they'll route all of their MIDI directly
- 7:11to Logic. And we kind of got a preview
- 7:14of how to do that when I showed you how
- 7:16we use those IC drivers. So, now let's
- 7:18have all playback go back through the IC
- 7:21driver. And that way, all the
- 7:23instruments should be in sync with one
- 7:25another. So now I've just opened up a
- 7:26different version of this Doracle
- 7:28project where I already have all those
- 7:29tracks set up to play back through that
- 7:31IEC driver or actually drivers in this
- 7:33case. And the first thing to do before
- 7:35even using that IC driver is you have to
- 7:37go to the audio MIDI tool and logic. So
- 7:39under applications utilities audio MIDI
- 7:43setup and then go to window show MIDI
- 7:45studio and you might see this IC driver
- 7:48but grayed out not with this bright red
- 7:50color here. So what you do is you just
- 7:52click on it, double click on it rather,
- 7:54and then you make sure that for each bus
- 7:57you have that device is online is
- 7:59checked off. Each bus can support 16
- 8:02MIDI channels. I added a whole bunch of
- 8:03buses so that I could deal with as many
- 8:05channels as I need. And you would do
- 8:07likewise for your case. So I'm going to
- 8:09close out of here. And for each of those
- 8:11buses that I plan on using in Doro, I
- 8:14need to do something in Doro preferences
- 8:16under play. And you probably think we
- 8:18need to enable those drivers, but
- 8:20actually we need to disable them. So by
- 8:22default, you're going to see all these
- 8:24checked off, whatever MIDI input devices
- 8:26you have on your system. So in my case,
- 8:28these were initially checked off, all of
- 8:30them, and then I just unchecked them.
- 8:33This is to prevent internal MIDI loops
- 8:35going from the output back to the input.
- 8:37So anyway, it's just something you need
- 8:39to do on the Doro side. So that's the
- 8:41first thing. And then on the play tab
- 8:44under VST and MIDI under MIDI
- 8:47instruments. Now see here I don't have
- 8:48any VSC instruments because everything's
- 8:50just going to get played back in Logic.
- 8:52So under MIDI instruments I've chosen
- 8:54the IC driver bus one which will give me
- 8:5716 channels and then driver bus 2 to
- 9:00give me the additional channels I'll
- 9:02need because I have more than 16 tracks
- 9:04here. And now I'll go back to the track
- 9:06inspector and for every single one of
- 9:09these tracks I need to choose an IC
- 9:11driver bus and a MIDI channel. So I'm
- 9:14starting with channel one on driver bus
- 9:17one and then channel two also driver bus
- 9:19one etc. all the way up until I view 16
- 9:22channels. So that happens when I come to
- 9:25this particular bell synth. So now I've
- 9:27switched to driver bus two and now back
- 9:30to channel one. And again I'm going to
- 9:32increment those all the way up. So
- 9:33that's what you do on the Doro side.
- 9:36Then on the Logic side, you have to do a
- 9:39mirror image of that setup. So here for
- 9:41every single track, I'm choosing the IC
- 9:44driver bus the same way I chose it in
- 9:46Doro and assigning it the same channel
- 9:48to listen in on. And I'm hitting this I
- 9:51button so that it shows up as orange.
- 9:53That means it's going to be listening to
- 9:55that incoming MIDI. And so I've done
- 9:57that for every single track. And so now
- 10:00we can play back the project.
- 10:09Now, one thing to know right away is
- 10:10notice how in Logic there's nothing
- 10:12happening in the transport. This isn't
- 10:14actually synchronizing with the Logic
- 10:16project. This is just sending the MIDI
- 10:18into these Logic tracks going through
- 10:20the loaded VSTs in Logic and those VSTs
- 10:23are directly producing the output. So
- 10:25again, like in the first case of just
- 10:27having Duro play using the VSTs that we
- 10:29loaded here, this case of just using the
- 10:32VSTs and Logic isn't all that much
- 10:34different, but we're still not hearing
- 10:36any of the effects that were used in
- 10:38Logic, none of the production elements,
- 10:39the mixing, all that. That still isn't
- 10:42being heard. We're just getting
- 10:43synchronized playback among the
- 10:44instruments so that we don't have those
- 10:46weird issues of some being in sync, some
- 10:48not. So if we listen to this towards
- 10:51where those drums come in now, we should
- 10:53hear that things are better in terms of
- 10:55sync.
- 11:11Now the one thing to notice here is the
- 11:13cursor is no longer corresponding to
- 11:16when we have the output. So, if we go
- 11:18back to the very beginning, you'll
- 11:20notice that when the output finally
- 11:21comes, the cursor is is at beat two or
- 11:25so.
- 11:31That isn't a huge deal. It's just
- 11:32something to be aware of. It might get a
- 11:34little annoying to always see that
- 11:35offset. And the other thing too about
- 11:38these first two approaches, because the
- 11:40Logic project is not being played back,
- 11:42you can't hear any recorded audio. So in
- 11:45this particular project, I've recorded
- 11:47guitar and I've simply doubled it with a
- 11:49synth version of that guitar. And so in
- 11:51these playback methods I'm talking about
- 11:53right now in Doro, we're only hearing
- 11:55MIDI playback. So that leads me to the
- 11:57whole point of this video, which is the
- 11:59kind of synchronization that I showed at
- 12:00the very beginning. And I wanted to give
- 12:02you some motivation for why I think this
- 12:04approach is better. So now let's get
- 12:06into those details. Okay. Finally, the
- 12:09whole point of the video, how to times
- 12:10synchronize Doro with Logic. So the
- 12:13logic project itself will play back in
- 12:16sync. So this is surprisingly easy. It's
- 12:18actually far easier than the previous
- 12:20two methods which had you loading a
- 12:21bunch of VSTs, setting up all sorts of
- 12:23routing as well as all the other issues
- 12:25I discussed. So the first step here is
- 12:29simply in Duro under play VST and MIDI
- 12:33you have to load this TXL time code
- 12:35plugin. That plugin can be found on this
- 12:38website. So you just scroll down and
- 12:40there's a demo version available. Now,
- 12:42that demo will periodically turn itself
- 12:44off. So, you have to keep on reenabling
- 12:46the plugin and resetting it up, which is
- 12:48kind of annoying. So, once I realize
- 12:50that it works, does what it's advertised
- 12:51to do. I just bought it cuz it's a
- 12:53pretty awesome plugin and it's the thing
- 12:55that enables us to do what we're doing
- 12:57right now. Do that by hitting this plus
- 12:59button here, add. And then you'll find
- 13:00that in your list under TXL20. Hit that
- 13:04right arrow and then it's going to say
- 13:05synth, even though it's not a synth. Hit
- 13:07that right arrow. Then you'll finally
- 13:09see the plugin which you can load. And
- 13:12then all you need to do is choose MTC.
- 13:15Then for the MIDI, choose some IC
- 13:18driver. I'll choose the first one. And
- 13:20then I'm going to choose the FPS to
- 13:22correspond with what I have in Logic.
- 13:24That project is 25 frames per second. So
- 13:27that's all we need to do. So we just
- 13:29have this one VSC instrument, that TXL
- 13:31time code. We don't even need to add
- 13:33anything under MIDI instruments. Notice
- 13:35how in the plugin itself, it's able to
- 13:37see those MIDI outputs. So, we already
- 13:39chose it there. Nothing to add here.
- 13:45And then for any given track, I don't
- 13:47think it's even important which one. Go
- 13:49over to track inspector and then under
- 13:51routing, choose that TXL time code
- 13:53plugin. And that's it. For the other
- 13:55tracks, I didn't choose anything. The
- 13:57routing is just empty except for one
- 13:59track. And now on the logic side, go to
- 14:03file, project settings, synchronization.
- 14:10And then I think by default, Logic has
- 14:12this plays at SM PTE set to 1 hour in.
- 14:16We're going to set that to zero cuz that
- 14:18TXL time code plugin, it is associating
- 14:21000000 with R1, B1, etc. So make sure
- 14:25you set it that way. Here's my logic
- 14:27frame rate 25. That's what I also set in
- 14:30that TXL time code plugin. I don't know
- 14:32if this makes a difference. I check it
- 14:34off anyway. Auto detect format of MTC.
- 14:37Under MIDI here, destination, nothing.
- 14:40Nothing to do here because we're not
- 14:41sending MTC from Logic. There's no
- 14:43destination from Logic. Logic is the
- 14:46destination from Doro. None of this
- 14:48matters. Keep that all unchecked. Now,
- 14:50under MIDI sync settings, I think this
- 14:53is the default. You can keep things as
- 14:56are. Now, notice how in Logic, notice
- 14:58how we have this sync icon lit up.
- 15:01Also, notice I've turned off the input
- 15:03monitoring for all these tracks. We
- 15:05don't need any of that. We don't need to
- 15:06tell these tracks to be listening to an
- 15:08IEC driver or anything. All we need to
- 15:11do is just make those settings that we
- 15:13just did under project settings
- 15:14synchronization. And that's it. Now,
- 15:16I'll go back to Doro. By the way, notice
- 15:18how Doro is showing the BPMs as 140
- 15:22starting at bar 2. In Logic, there was
- 15:24no BPM change at bar two. The whole
- 15:26project is at 140 BPM. But maybe because
- 15:29I imported this brass synth track that
- 15:32had its music starting at bar two,
- 15:34that's how it decided to insert that BPM
- 15:36at bar 2. But either way, this first bar
- 15:38is empty, so it's not too important.
- 15:44And now we can hit play and we'll have
- 15:46synchronization of the project in Logic.
- 15:48And it doesn't matter where the cursor
- 15:50initially is in Logic. I just set it
- 15:52back to the beginning. It also doesn't
- 15:53matter where we start in Doro. Either
- 15:56way, it's going to play back at the same
- 15:58position. They're going to be synced.
- 16:00So, we'll hit play.
- 16:03And now see what's happening here.
- 16:27So, right off the bat, we see the sync
- 16:28is really good. And I want to show you
- 16:30what happens if for some reason you
- 16:32decided you wanted that BPM to be at the
- 16:35very beginning. So, if you notice
- 16:36something similar in your project and
- 16:37your instinct is, hey, let me move this
- 16:39back to the very beginning. And now we
- 16:41hit play.
- 16:53So now the cursor and the audio output
- 16:56aren't syncing up. It isn't a huge deal.
- 16:58Whereas before we're hearing the output
- 17:00corresponding where the cursor is in
- 17:03this case,
- 17:09>> it seems to be one or two beats behind.
- 17:12Whereas we keep it the way it was
- 17:13before, we have good sync between the
- 17:15audio output and the location of the
- 17:17cursor.
- 17:30And also you might notice sometimes at
- 17:32the very beginning there's some weird
- 17:33things that can happen. So here it looks
- 17:36like it was pitch shift a little bit and
- 17:37then it finally corrected itself. So
- 17:39just something to watch out for. But I
- 17:41noticed sometimes it happens, sometimes
- 17:42it doesn't. It's kind of unpredictable.
- 17:48Something worth testing is to see what
- 17:49happens if we have an additional tempo
- 17:51change. So I'll go add a change
- 17:53somewhere. Let's say at bar 11 here.
- 17:56Shift T.
- 17:59So we'll have that go up to 150 beats
- 18:01per minute at bar 11. And in Logic have
- 18:04to do the same thing.
- 18:09And I'll start playback a little before
- 18:11that.
- 18:29So the tempo change seemed to be
- 18:31handled. Okay. Synchronization stayed in
- 18:33lock. And the other benefit of this
- 18:36approach is now we're hearing the true
- 18:38project in the current state that you
- 18:40have it at. So whereas here I imported
- 18:43cleaned up MIDI tracks that I did for
- 18:45notation purposes, I can still play back
- 18:47and have all the nuance. So I didn't
- 18:49have to lose any of the humanization
- 18:51that I applied to the MIDI. And I could
- 18:53even go to a place where I haven't
- 18:55notated the music, for instance, the
- 18:56outro. And I'll still hear playback
- 18:59here, which could be useful if I have,
- 19:00say, a guitar part I recorded in the
- 19:02notation editor. I might be working on
- 19:04transcribing that.
- 19:28All right, looks like I did get some
- 19:30notation in for this dreamy synth for a
- 19:32couple bars there. But anyway, that's
- 19:34another benefit is that you can stay in
- 19:35the notation editor while you're working
- 19:37on the notation. You have the audio
- 19:39playback just the way you want it in
- 19:40Logic. I want to show you what happens
- 19:43if you don't set this to zero. So, if
- 19:45it's set to one, like Logic is by
- 19:47default, and then we play the project.
- 19:49Look how Logic is stuck back at minus
- 19:52bar 9 or something in this infinite loop
- 19:54as Doro is continuing along forward in
- 19:57time. Logic went back in time, some kind
- 20:00of dystopian past. Can't figure out what
- 20:03to do there. So that's why it's
- 20:04important to make that setting under
- 20:06synchronization.
- 20:09And obviously for projects that it makes
- 20:11sense to have that at one. Put that at
- 20:13one. But for this kind of
- 20:14synchronization work, put it at zero.
- 20:16And now if we hit play,
- 20:23now Logic understands what to do with
- 20:25that incoming MTC. The other thing to
- 20:27pay attention, and this is really the
- 20:29least important part of this whole
- 20:31entire video, but maybe for some people
- 20:33it's interesting. Notice how when you
- 20:35hit play, Logic jumps back to bar zero
- 20:38and something. You see that? You have to
- 20:41be focusing your eyes on the upper left
- 20:43corner, which would be kind of a weird
- 20:45thing to do as you're watching a video.
- 20:47But if that happens to draw your
- 20:48attention and it annoys you, there's
- 20:50something you can do about it. And I
- 20:52actually do find it kind of annoying.
- 20:53You know, there's something unnatural.
- 20:54kind of like when I watch people who are
- 20:56driving on those Segways, you know, the
- 20:58weird way their body is is vertical with
- 21:00their arms vertically hanging down,
- 21:03their hands vertical, just that that
- 21:05whole strange vertical look. It's like
- 21:07it's against biology, against evolution.
- 21:10Maybe that's why I find it so odd and
- 21:12and unnerving. So, if you find this
- 21:14unnerving as well, there's something you
- 21:16can actually do about it. You can go to
- 21:18file, project settings, synchronization,
- 21:20where we were initially when we were
- 21:21setting this all up. And then under
- 21:23MIDI, MIDI sync settings, add a MTC
- 21:26pickup delay. I find that if I add say
- 21:28eight frames, now if I hit play, you
- 21:31shouldn't see that nonsense. If you're
- 21:33going back to bar zero and something
- 21:46now did have that nonsense where
- 21:48initially the pitch was up a little bit
- 21:50and I haven't figured out a way to get
- 21:52that to never happen. It seems kind of
- 21:54unpredictable. If anybody can figure
- 21:56that out, please put it in the comments.
- 21:58It would be awesome to get rid of that
- 22:00kind of strange pitch glitchy behavior
- 22:02that sometimes happens in the first bar
- 22:04or two. If anybody's wondering, I've
- 22:06actually tried this in Musecore as well.
- 22:08In fact, my whole reason for switching
- 22:10from Muscore to Duro was the fact that I
- 22:13couldn't do this in Muscore. In Muscore,
- 22:16I added this TXL time code to one track.
- 22:20I set it up the same way I did in Doro.
- 22:23Send on IC driver bus one. And no matter
- 22:26what you do in Musecore under audio
- 22:28MIDI, if I deactivate these to prevent
- 22:31them from having a negative effect on
- 22:32this plugin's action, nothing happens.
- 22:35Even though Logic is listening to MTC
- 22:37and this time code plugin should be
- 22:39outputting it, nothing's happening. So
- 22:41it seems in Musecore, even if you have
- 22:44this TXL time plugin and this plugin
- 22:46thinks it can send MTC, it seems to not
- 22:49be receiving what it needs from
- 22:50Musecore. So, Musecore is interfering in
- 22:53this plugin's ability to send MTC from
- 22:56the timing info that's in Muscore. And
- 22:59it's kind of a weird decision. I have no
- 23:00idea why in Muscore they wouldn't want
- 23:02you to have that ability. But anyway, if
- 23:04anybody can disprove me, can get this
- 23:06working, please let me know. Anyway,
- 23:09that's that. I hope you enjoyed the
- 23:11video. I hope you appreciate this kind
- 23:13of synchronization that you can get now
- 23:14between your notation program, Doro, and
- 23:17Logic. I think for a lot of people, this
- 23:19actually would be your preferred
- 23:20workflow if you're working in a DAW and
- 23:22you're doing some notation work. It
- 23:24doesn't make too much sense to be doing
- 23:26a whole ton of VST routing in the
- 23:28notation editor cuz that's not their
- 23:30strength because after all, you already
- 23:31have all that work that you did in your
- 23:33DAW and the synchronization setup like I
- 23:35showed you is actually pretty easy. And
- 23:37so with this approach, I think you have
- 23:38pretty good integration between your
- 23:40production work and the DAW side and
- 23:42whatever you want to do on theation
- 23:43side. For those of you interested, I'll
- 23:45go more into detail on how I set up
- 23:47these kind of projects in Logic, the
- 23:49whole thought process, how I tend to
- 23:51think like an arranger or orchestrator
- 23:53for organizing my music and producing it
- 23:56in Logic. So, that'll be in some
- 23:58upcoming videos. Anyway, till next time.
- 24:07Heat. Heat.
