- 0:00all right so you want to improve your
- 0:01head voice my name is Adam Michonne I'm
- 0:03a singer songwriter and vocal coach
- 0:05today we're gonna dig right into that so
- 0:15before we go into a lot of detail about
- 0:17how to improve and how to strengthen our
- 0:19head voice we really need to understand
- 0:21what is head voice head voice is two
- 0:25things that are occurring at the same
- 0:26time one is that at the vocal chord
- 0:29level we switch musculature from what we
- 0:31call T a dominant vocal production to C
- 0:35T dominant vocal production probably
- 0:37losing you right now as far as the
- 0:39terminology so let me clarify that
- 0:41there's one set of muscles we call
- 0:43whatever but they're called ta muscles
- 0:46that are responsible for the creation of
- 0:48Ches voice and then there are other
- 0:50muscles that are responsible for head
- 0:52voice so that's it's that simple it's
- 0:55not don't get afraid of all the
- 0:57terminology really we're just talking
- 0:59about two different muscle groups that
- 1:00are responsible for two different
- 1:02resonances I've already hinted to the
- 1:04second part of this puzzle which is our
- 1:07vibration so once it's actually created
- 1:10at the vocal chords it begins to vibrate
- 1:13elsewhere in the body
- 1:14this also separates chest voice from
- 1:17head voice chest voice it's resonating
- 1:19or vibrating out of the mouth head voice
- 1:23it's coming up into the head and it's
- 1:25vibrating up there so we have two things
- 1:27happening with head voice we need to
- 1:30have the CT muscles working and we need
- 1:33to be using head resonance in order to
- 1:36hit that those notes so to simplify it
- 1:38even more chest voice ah head voice OH
- 1:42chest voice ah head voice so when we're
- 1:47going into our head voice we need to
- 1:50make sure that we let go of any TA
- 1:53dominance so what we don't want to have
- 1:55is and trying to like pull that chest
- 2:00voice up into our head voice range
- 2:02realizing there is a difference allowing
- 2:05us to go into head voice without any
- 2:08push or any force now what makes things
- 2:11even a little bit more
- 2:12complex is that within head voice we
- 2:14have two different types of head voice
- 2:16we have one type of head voice that
- 2:18involves mostly just the ligament of the
- 2:21vocal cord and a longer opening time of
- 2:24the vocal cords in each vibration which
- 2:27is called falsetto so it sounds airier
- 2:29there's a rush of air coming through
- 2:32haha
- 2:34that's your falsetto and then we also
- 2:36have head voice
- 2:40which has a closed court position which
- 2:43means essentially that the vocal cords
- 2:45they closed longer with each vibration
- 2:47as well as the full muscle of the vocal
- 2:51cord starts getting involved so it's a
- 2:53different type of process within head
- 2:55voice so what we're gonna first focus on
- 2:58is falsetto because if you're not able
- 3:00and some of you may be able to do this
- 3:03very easily but for those of you are not
- 3:05able to do this you can't jump straight
- 3:07to pure head voice if you don't already
- 3:09have falsetto in the bag just being able
- 3:12to do it nice and easy so what we're
- 3:14gonna start off with is a very light
- 3:16easy
- 3:17falsetto exercise that starts way up in
- 3:20your head and we start to slowly trickle
- 3:22down into your chest voice so follow
- 3:24with me a certain point you're gonna
- 3:47notice that your voice wants to go into
- 3:49chest try to bring your falsetto as low
- 3:51as you can
- 4:07now we're gonna slide down from there
- 4:12till we land in our chests what this
- 4:15does is it slowly starts to open up your
- 4:17falsetto now we're gonna do it in the
- 4:19opposite way so we're gonna go going
- 4:26upwards Oh making sure you get a nice H
- 4:31in between each one of those and so this
- 4:33is going to train your falsetto now what
- 4:36many of you might be doing right now is
- 4:37this uh-huh and pushing and forcing I
- 4:44want you to think of totally letting go
- 4:46of all the muscles here if you're
- 4:48interested in learning more on how to
- 4:50sing I created a resource that I wish
- 4:52would have been around when I was
- 4:53starting to sing with the subscription
- 4:55I've created you get access to all of
- 4:57the courses that I've created and more
- 4:59that are coming you get access to all of
- 5:01my private lesson recordings that I have
- 5:03from other students so you can learn
- 5:05vicariously through them and you get
- 5:07monthly one-on-one lessons with me all
- 5:09of this is available for one low monthly
- 5:11price and it's a very well-rounded
- 5:13approach to learn how to sing click the
- 5:16link down below to get access now so
- 5:18first thing to check in on is this
- 5:20muscle right here this is called the
- 5:22digastric muscle is that muscle jumping
- 5:24in so stick your thumb under there give
- 5:27it a good stick like shove it in there
- 5:29feel that muscle and then do that is
- 5:33that muscle pressing down and flexing as
- 5:36you're doing it we want to try to bring
- 5:37our conscious effort to relax that
- 5:39muscle second thing is your jaw opening
- 5:42properly so are you going and holding
- 5:47the jaw tight we want to open the jaw
- 5:49there's another trick see this little
- 5:51part of my ear right here I want you to
- 5:53stick your finger right in front of that
- 5:54and I want you to feel when I open your
- 5:56jaw you get an indent put your finger
- 5:58right into that indent and make sure
- 6:00that that opens all the way till your
- 6:03finger falls into that indent every time
- 6:05you're doing this so I want you to make
- 6:09sure you're opening your job properly I
- 6:11want you to make sure you're not
- 6:13engaging here so we want to try to make
- 6:15it totally released all these muscles
- 6:17are led and go that's the key here to be
- 6:20able to find falsetto with a lot of ease
- 6:25good like that
- 6:32to want to make sure that we're getting
- 6:34that flow now what we're gonna do is
- 6:36we're gonna change it into a straight
- 6:38tone in falsetto Oh making sure you're
- 6:43keeping that air flowing when I do it I
- 6:45start with an H and I let that H guide
- 6:47the whole scale
- 6:51you're gonna find so much release if you
- 6:53allow that airflow to guide the sound
- 6:55you really want to think of writing the
- 6:57tone on top of a bed of air and so what
- 7:03we're gonna do now that we've got our
- 7:05falsetto is we want to start to apply
- 7:08that to a little bit of head voice so
- 7:10what we're gonna do is lean into the
- 7:12falsetto a little bit till we find just
- 7:14a little bit of connection where our
- 7:16vocal chords start to come together and
- 7:17we get more of a full voice type sound
- 7:19so we're gonna go see if you can do that
- 7:28there's gonna be a little bit of a shift
- 7:30where your vocal cords go from that
- 7:32mostly open quotient to mostly closed
- 7:35but we want to try to make that as light
- 7:38and easy as possible now let's do it
- 7:39here we don't want to balloon too much
- 7:45into it because again we're trying to
- 7:46keep it in head voice to keep it nice
- 7:48and heady so now what we're gonna do is
- 7:50actually change the vowel around so that
- 7:52we draw ourselves more towards head
- 7:54voice by and large the rule is wider
- 7:57vowels bring us more towards chest voice
- 7:59narrower vowels bring us more towards
- 8:01head voice so what we're gonna do is
- 8:03we're going to use an O sound which is
- 8:05the narrowest vowel and that's gonna
- 8:07bring us more towards our head voice so
- 8:10what we're gonna do is and that way
- 8:14we're leaning into it from that falsetto
- 8:16place first and so we're doing a little
- 8:22bit of an engagement thinking what I'm
- 8:25doing to be able to get there of that
- 8:27head voice is I'm leaning it with my
- 8:28lower abs so I get my lower abs ooh
- 8:31to get involved to be able to do it so
- 8:33if I go from
- 8:34basically no AB involvement to now my
- 8:39abs are getting much more involved to be
- 8:41able to project that sound out a little
- 8:43bit more get the vocal cords to close
- 8:44around that airflow that's being sent
- 8:46out that's what we want to do alright so
- 8:48step number three what we're gonna do is
- 8:50we're gonna try to jump straight into
- 8:51our head voice sound we're gonna go from
- 8:54the top of our range down and try to
- 8:57bring that head voice further down into
- 8:59our bottom of our range so we're gonna
- 9:01go like this
- 9:09now what I don't want you to do is
- 9:11suddenly shift into chess so we don't
- 9:14want to go oh we don't want that sudden
- 9:19shift to happen I know many of you are
- 9:21gonna want to do that try to bring that
- 9:22head voice down as low as you can and
- 9:24try to eventually merge with chess not
- 9:28jump into chess
- 9:34[Music]
- 9:38the way that we do this is by lightening
- 9:40up the chest voice making nice light and
- 9:42soft on the chest voice so then that way
- 9:44we're able to merge that head voice with
- 9:46our chest voice if you follow this
- 9:48three-step routine on a regular basis
- 9:51every single day you're bound to
- 9:52definitely improve and strengthen your
