Full transcript
- 0:00Hi I'm Matty,
- 0:00and as of now I'm ranked sixth in the world in the WCA rankings:
- 0:04the official Rubik's cube competition organizer.
- 0:06And I will teach you how to solve your first Rubik's Cube today.
- 0:09And I am Milan, also known as CubeHead on YouTube,
- 0:11and I'll be joining you guys today to solve my first Rubik's Cube,
- 0:15going over some of the mistakes I made, so you don't have to make them.
- 0:18Good luck to you!
- 0:19I guess we can start by using a cube that's actually solvable.
- 0:22Let's start by going over the different pieces of the Rubik's Cube.
- 0:24It doesn't matter what kind of 3x3 you own, this method will work on any cube.
- 0:28I will be using this Speed Cube.
- 0:29* epic boss move *
- 0:31This is a center piece and they always stay in place.
- 0:33On modern Rubik's Cubes, white is always opposite of yellow.
- 0:36So no matter how much I turn it,
- 0:40* What is happening? * * Matty using 5% of his powers.*
- 0:41white is still opposite of yellow.
- 0:43This is an edge piece which has two colors.
- 0:45This is a corner piece which has three colors.
- 0:48The goal when solving a Rubik's cube is to get each piece in its correct position.
- 0:52First, let's start by solving a white cross with each white edge in its correct position.
- 0:57The easiest way to do this is by first creating a daisy around the yellow center,
- 1:01like shown here.
- 1:03You might be able to figure out how to create the Daisy on your own
- 1:06but I'll show you how to do it.
- 1:07We're only going to focus on edge pieces with white on them.
- 1:10Some pieces require only one move to solve, like this one.
- 1:15And this one also only requires only one move.
- 1:18However, sometimes pieces like this one which is in its correct place but
- 1:22flipped, require multiple moves.
- 1:25You can bring it down and then connect it with the yellow center.
- 1:30Then for this edge piece you cannot just bring it up like this,
- 1:32because it pushes this edge piece out of its position.
- 1:35Instead what you do is bring the spot where the edge piece wants
- 1:39to go above it and then replace this, with this.
- 1:43To turn this Daisy into a correct white cross,
- 1:45we need to align the side colors of the white edges to their correct centers.
- 1:50Let's start with this one.
- 1:52This is orange.
- 1:54Turn here, this is green, this doesn't match.
- 1:56This is orange, it does match.
- 1:58The next step is to bring this white piece down to the white center: solving that edge piece.
- 2:05We just do the same for all white edge pieces until we have a white cross.
- 2:11Okay I'm going to start by placing this white piece next to the yellow center.
- 2:16* That's a corner bro. *
- 2:18Oh yeah, okay I'm going to start by putting this white piece next to the yellow center.
- 2:25Now we're going to solve the white corners into
- 2:27their correct position thus creating the first layer.
- 2:31To do this,
- 2:31you will need to learn two simple algorithms or sequences of moves you need to memorize.
- 2:36They are really simple so don't worry.
- 2:38You got this!
- 2:39The first one we're going to call the "Righty Algorithm" and it goes like this:
- 2:43you turn the right side clockwise,
- 2:47the top clockwise,
- 2:49the right side counterclockwise,
- 2:52and the top counterclockwise.
- 2:54The second algorithm we're going to call the "Lefty Algorithm" and it goes like this:
- 2:58first, you turn the left left side counterclockwise,
- 3:01the top counterclockwise,
- 3:04the left side clockwise,
- 3:06and the top clockwise.
- 3:08Practice both algorithms until you can do them by heart.
- 3:11Holding the white cross on the bottom,
- 3:13we're going to find a corner piece in the top layer that has white on it,
- 3:16like this one.
- 3:17Now look at the other two colors on the corner piece:
- 3:20because the two colors are blue and orange,
- 3:23we're going to find the blue and orange center pieces
- 3:26and place the corner in between the two center pieces.
- 3:30So now it's on top of the spot where it needs to go.
- 3:33Looking at the corner piece,
- 3:35if white faces to the left:
- 3:37then we hold the corner on the left
- 3:39and do a Lefty Algorithm.
- 3:42This solves the corner.
- 3:44If white faces to the right:
- 3:46we hold the corner on the right side
- 3:47and do a Righty Algorithm.
- 3:51This solves the corner.
- 3:52If white faces up:
- 3:53we hold it to the right
- 3:55and do three Righty Algorithms.
- 4:00This solves the corner piece.
- 4:02You just do the same steps for all the white corners in the top layer.
- 4:05If you cannot find any corner pieces with white on them in the top layer
- 4:09and the first layer is not solved yet,
- 4:11look for an incorrect white corner piece in the first layer.
- 4:14Then hold it on the right side of the cube and do a Righty Algorithm.
- 4:20This takes out the corner piece letting you insert it like normal.
- 4:23Okay so now we hold the cross at the bottom, we look for corners with white in them like this.
- 4:29It faces to the left, so Lefty Algorithm...
- 4:33* That's the wrong spot dude! *
- 4:35Oh! So this one has green and orange in it, so we put it above the green and orange centers,
- 4:43now it faces to the left,
- 4:44we hold it to the left and do a Lefty Algorithm.
- 4:49Now we're going to solve the edges on top of the first layer to build the second layer.
- 4:54To do this, we hold the white cross at the bottom
- 4:56again and look for edges in the top layer without yellow on them.
- 5:00Like this one.
- 5:01Now we're going to look at the color on the side and match it to the correct center piece.
- 5:08Now while facing the edge, we need to look at which side it needs to go:
- 5:12if it needs to go left, like this edge,
- 5:15we use the upper layer to move the edge piece one turn away from where it needs to go,
- 5:20then we do a Lefty Algorithm.
- 5:24This takes out the corner.
- 5:26Then we can proceed and insert this corner the way we learned before.
- 5:30We look at the corner, we see that white is facing to the right,
- 5:33so we put the corner on the right and we do a Righty Algorithm.
- 5:37This solves the corner again as well as the edge.
- 5:40If the edge needs to go to the right:
- 5:42we use the upper layer and turn the edge piece one turn away from where it needs to go,
- 5:47then we do a Righty Algorithm.
- 5:51This takes out the corner.
- 5:52Then we can just insert it like we learned before.
- 5:56This solves the corner again, as well as the edge.
- 5:59Do this for all edges in the top layer without yellow on them.
- 6:04If there are no edges in the top layer without yellow on them
- 6:07and the second layer is not yet solved,
- 6:10we look for an edge without yellow in its incorrect position.
- 6:14Let's say this one.
- 6:15Then you insert a yellow edge in that position.
- 6:21This takes this edge out of the second layer
- 6:24and we can then proceed and insert this how we learned before.
- 6:27All right, let's look for edges without yellow in the top layer,
- 6:31here we have one.
- 6:32Okay so this piece needs to go here,
- 6:35so we put it one away...
- 6:36* You didn't align the edge yet! *
- 6:38Oh yeah that's right!
- 6:39Let's first align the edge so it is like this,
- 6:44it needs to go to the left,
- 6:46one turn away,
- 6:48Lefty Algorithm,
- 6:50and then insert this corner.
- 6:54Now we only need to solve the last layer and the cube is finished.
- 6:57But beware, if at any point from now on you have a case that we don't cover,
- 7:02you have to disassemble your cube and put it back together in a solved state.
- 7:06We're going to start by creating a yellow cross on the top
- 7:09by looking at the pattern of yellow edges.
- 7:11If there is already a yellow cross in your cube, you can skip this step.
- 7:14If you have a line on your cube:
- 7:16you're going to rotate the top like this, so that the line is horizontal.
- 7:21Then you turn the front side clockwise,
- 7:24you do a Righty Algorithm,
- 7:28and you turn the front counter clockwise.
- 7:31And there's yellow cross.
- 7:32If your cube has a hook on it:
- 7:34you're going to rotate the top so that the hook is in the back left,
- 7:38you're going to rotate the front clockwise,
- 7:41you're going to do two Righty Algorithms,
- 7:46and finally turn the front counterclockwise.
- 7:49And there's the yellow cross.
- 7:51If you have a dot case, then you do the same steps that you would do for a line case.
- 7:57This creates a hook, then then go ahead and solve the hook.
- 8:02All right, so I'm done with my first two layers...
- 8:04* BuT wAiT a MiNuTe *
- 8:05There's just one edge facing up!
- 8:07So I have to reassemble my cube.
- 8:10All right, let's scramble it again and start over.
- 8:14Now we need to put the edges of the yellow cross in the correct position,
- 8:18like I'm showing here.
- 8:21To do so, you'll need to learn an algorithm called a "Sune".
- 8:24For this algorithm, we're going to keep track of these two pieces or "pair".
- 8:28Start by putting the pair in the top layer,
- 8:31take it out of its slot and realign the white side.
- 8:35Then put the pair in the back,
- 8:39put its slot into the top layer, reinsert it into its slot,
- 8:44then fix the white side.
- 8:46Do this algorithm a couple of times to familiarize yourself.
- 8:51Start by aligning as many edges to their center as possible by turning the top layer.
- 8:56If you can match all of them, like this, then you can skip this step.
- 9:01Right now, none of them are aligned, so let's just try turn the top layer.
- 9:06All right so now I have one, this is not aligned, but this is.
- 9:12If the aligned edges are across from each other, like in this case:
- 9:16do a Sune holding yellow on top.
- 9:21Then you should be able to align two edges that are next to each other.
- 9:25If the edges are next to each other:
- 9:28hold them in the back and right and do a Sune.
- 9:34Now this time you should be able to align all of the edges.
- 9:37We just need to solve the yellow corners and the cube is solved.
- 9:43We will need one more easy algorithm called a "Niklas".
- 9:46For this algorithm, we're going to keep track of these two front pairs.
- 9:51First bring the right pair up, put it in the back.
- 9:57Then bring the left pair up and put that one in the back.
- 10:02Now we can solve the right pair again,
- 10:05and finally insert this pair back in its slot and fix the white side.
- 10:12This was one Niklas.
- 10:13Do this algorithm a couple more times until you're familiar with it.
- 10:16To see if a corner is in its correct spot, we look at the colors that aren't yellow.
- 10:21If they match the colors of the edges next to it, then it is in the correct spot.
- 10:26Here the corner is not in the correct spot: this blue does not match with this green.
- 10:31However, if you look at this corner:
- 10:34this is in the correct spot because this blue
- 10:37matches with this blue and this orange matches with this orange.
- 10:41When there are no corners in the correct spot: do a Niklas from any angle,
- 10:48realign the edges and then you should have one corner in the correct spot.
- 10:53If you have one corner in the correct spot:
- 10:55you hold the correct corner in the front left and do one Niklas.
- 11:01If we then align the edges again you will either have all the corners in the correct spot,
- 11:06or you'll have to do one more Niklas.
- 11:11Align the edges and here we go.
- 11:14All of the corners are in the correct spots.
- 11:17Now we only need to flip the corners and the cube is solved.
- 11:20To do so, we will flip the cube upside down with white on the top and yellow on the bottom,
- 11:26and solve each corner one by one.
- 11:29Start by holding the cube in a way that the corner in the right bottom is not solved yet.
- 11:35Then we can do Righty Algorithms until this corner solves.
- 11:41That's one... and then it is solved.
- 11:46Once this corner is solved, turn the bottom layer.
- 11:49!! Don't rotate the cube !!
- 11:51Keep it here, turn the bottom layer until another corner that is not solved is in this position.
- 11:58Then repeat the Righty Algorithms until the corner is solved.
- 12:04That's one and here it is solved.
- 12:07So now we can rotate the bottom layer again.
- 12:10But here we see this corner is already solved, so we can skip this and move on to the next one.
- 12:17Do Righty Algorithms until this solves now.
- 12:21There's one,
- 12:26and then we can just realign the bottom layer,
- 12:30and the cube is solved.
- 12:31LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOO
- 12:33All right so I'm at my last step I just need to twist the corners.
- 12:37But wait, can I not just do...
