  2. 0:05there are three fundamental things that
  3. 0:08you have to know about making an
  4. 0:11operatic sound a truly operatic
  5. 0:14sound and the first and most important
  6. 0:16thing is keeping the larynx low if
  7. 0:19you've been to my website sing operan
  8. 0:22now.com and you subscribe to receive a
  9. 0:25free video from me on my front page the
  10. 0:28first thing I send you is a video that
  11. 0:29shows you how to fix the number one most
  12. 0:32dangerous problem that I hear singers
  13. 0:35who are just starting out making
  14. 0:37consistently and that problem is
  15. 0:40allowing your larynx to rise so the
  16. 0:42larynx is this guy right here AKA your
  17. 0:45voice box and women you have these too
  18. 0:49now you can't really see the larynx as
  19. 0:51prominently in some people as in others
  20. 0:54but that's okay because you can feel it
  21. 0:56okay so let's just get a feel of where
  22. 0:57the larynx is go ahead and put your hand
  23. 1:00on your
  24. 1:02throat and just
  25. 1:04swallow a couple times that little bump
  26. 1:08moving up and down that's your larynx
  27. 1:10that's your voice
  28. 1:12box and we always want to keep it
  29. 1:15down how do we keep the LNS down how do
  30. 1:18we do
  31. 1:19this well a lot of people can simply do
  32. 1:22this on command if you watch me all I'm
  33. 1:25doing is I'm sort of allowing my tongue
  34. 1:27to drop back and down
  35. 1:30back and
  36. 1:31down so all I'm doing
  37. 1:37is okay if you can't do this yet don't
  38. 1:40worry because I'm going to give you two
  39. 1:42techniques that are going to teach you
  40. 1:44how to drop your larynx and after you do
  41. 1:47them for a while you won't really need
  42. 1:48them anymore and you'll just be able to
  43. 1:50do it on
  44. 1:51command so the first technique is I want
  45. 1:54you to pretend like you're sniffing a
  46. 1:57bouquet of roses and you just really
  47. 1:59want to Savor the scent as much as
  48. 2:01possible so you're going to breathe in
  49. 2:03through your nose and just pay attention
  50. 2:06to what happens to your
  51. 2:10Lings it drops right so remember this
  52. 2:14sensation remember how it feels to sniff
  53. 2:17the Roses whenever you go to sing and
  54. 2:19your larynx will drop the second method
  55. 2:22of dropping your larynx is to yawn so go
  56. 2:26ahead and put your hand on your throat
  57. 2:28again and just yawn
  58. 2:36you'll notice that the lnx drops and
  59. 2:39what I really love about the yawning
  60. 2:41technique is that your larynx drops your
  61. 2:43tongue
  62. 2:45relaxes uh and all of these muscles over
  63. 2:47here and your shoulders and your neck
  64. 2:49they also relax uh a lot of times when
  65. 2:52we can't sing the notes that we want or
  66. 2:54we can't get the sound that we're trying
  67. 2:55to get we engage these so-called
  68. 2:58compensatory muscles we're trying to
  69. 3:00compensate for a lack of skill or a lack
  70. 3:03of technique and all we do is we wind up
  71. 3:06making ourselves tense so yawning is a
  72. 3:09really good way to kind of just relax
  73. 3:11and remind yourself
  74. 3:13that relax be free
