  2. 0:16One of the most important things
  3. 0:17that skilled drivers are good at,
  4. 0:19is sharing the road safely with everyone else.
  5. 0:22Not just with cars and larger vehicles,
  6. 0:25but also with other road users:
  7. 0:27like pedestrians,
  8. 0:28people on motorcycles,
  9. 0:29mopeds, bikes - even horse riders.
  10. 0:32It’s easy to fall into the habit
  11. 0:34of only looking for cars and larger vehicles
  12. 0:37and not see other road users -
  13. 0:39especially bikes and motorcycles -
  14. 0:41which are smaller and often use
  15. 0:43different parts of the road to cars.
  16. 0:45So here are some tips
  17. 0:47for making sure you’re never the driver
  18. 0:48who says “sorry mate, I didn’t see you”.
  19. 0:51(OK shall we go…)
  20. 0:54(Yeah...)
  21. 0:56Common places where drivers fail to see
  22. 0:58other road users are at intersections,
  23. 1:01when coming out of driveways or car parks,
  24. 1:03and at roundabouts.
  25. 1:05Remind yourself to check for bikes,
  26. 1:08motorbikes and pedestrians at these places -
  27. 1:11and take a second look if necessary.
  28. 1:15Always slow down and be prepared to stop
  29. 1:18near schools, shopping centres,
  30. 1:20bus stops and pedestrian crossings
  31. 1:22and other places where pedestrians
  32. 1:24may suddenly walk out in front of you.
  33. 1:26(Pedestrian...)
  34. 1:27(So you couldn’t see him,
  35. 1:29because of the parked car…
  36. 1:31and then suddenly he’s crossing…)
  37. 1:32(Popped out of nowhere...)
  38. 1:34(Yeah...)
  39. 1:34When you’re turning left
  40. 1:35at an intersection or a driveway,
  41. 1:38or when you’re leaving a roundabout,
  42. 1:40you need to get into the habit
  43. 1:41of checking to your left
  44. 1:42for any cyclists coming up beside you
  45. 1:44who are going straight ahead.
  46. 1:47If there is someone,
  47. 1:48wait until they’ve passed before turning.
  48. 1:51(Its like having another lane on the left...)
  49. 1:54(Yep...)
  50. 1:54When you’re turning right at an intersection,
  51. 1:57you need to make sure you check
  52. 1:58for oncoming motorcyclists and cyclists
  53. 2:01that are going straight ahead or turning left.
  54. 2:07The other tricky situation
  55. 2:09is when you have to cross a cycle path
  56. 2:11where cyclists can travel in either direction.
  57. 2:13Here, you have to look in both directions
  58. 2:16along the cycle path for cyclists
  59. 2:18as well as checking the rest of the traffic.
  60. 2:23Another situation where drivers need to take care
  61. 2:25is when passing cyclists and mopeds.
  62. 2:29When you are passing cyclists, in particular,
  63. 2:31you need to give them plenty of room.
  64. 2:34The official recommendation
  65. 2:35is at least a metre and a half.
  66. 2:36(You don't need to try and nip out in front of her...)
  67. 2:39(But this would be ok?...)
  68. 2:40(You could but that means you might have oncoming traffic...)
  69. 2:45(Like this…)
  70. 2:45(Like this…
  71. 2:46So that is a classic example,
  72. 2:47its much better just to remain patient and
  73. 2:50you’re safe now – that's great.)
  74. 2:53To pass cyclists or moped riders
  75. 2:55you usually have to move towards
  76. 2:57the centre of the road
  77. 2:58and sometimes cross the centre-line.
  78. 3:01Make sure the road ahead is clear enough
  79. 3:03and wide enough to pass safely.
  80. 3:05Remember your usual 3-step routine
  81. 3:08of mirror, signal, shoulder check.
  82. 3:12Make sure you’re well clear of the cyclist
  83. 3:14before you move left again -
  84. 3:16drivers sometimes misjudge how fast
  85. 3:18cyclists can travel and cut in too early.
  86. 3:22Cyclists are allowed to move
  87. 3:23into the middle of the lane
  88. 3:24if they need to avoid roadside hazards,
  89. 3:26be seen better by motorists
  90. 3:28when they come up to intersections,
  91. 3:30or when the road is too narrow
  92. 3:32for cars to pass them safely.
  93. 3:35In these situations,
  94. 3:36wait until they’ve moved back towards the kerb
  95. 3:38before you pass them.
  96. 3:40Finally, also be mindful of other road users
  97. 3:43when you stop.
  98. 3:45Check your mirrors and over your shoulder
  99. 3:46before opening any car doors.
  100. 3:48A good habit to get into before you open the door
  101. 3:51is to turn your body to look behind you,
  102. 3:54checking for other road users.
  103. 3:55(music)
