  1. 0:00if you've just bought on your MacBook
  2. 0:01you're probably watching this video
  3. 0:02because you want to make sure how to set
  4. 0:04it up correctly and look you are in the
  5. 0:06right place I've been setting up
  6. 0:08probably hundreds of MacBooks over the
  7. 0:10last 10 years on this channel and both
  8. 0:12at my job and uh in today's video we're
  9. 0:15going to show you exactly how to do it
  10. 0:17as long as some tips and tricks and
  11. 0:19essential things you need to know along
  12. 0:21the way well when I say we I mean me
  13. 0:23because she doesn't actually have any
  14. 0:24thumbs okay so for the purposes of this
  15. 0:27video this is the brand new Mac that I'm
  16. 0:29going to be setting up now this
  17. 0:31particular model is a 14-in M3 Pro
  18. 0:34MacBook Pro but it doesn't really matter
  19. 0:36what MacBook you have as long as it's an
  20. 0:38apple silicon Mac uh all of this guide
  21. 0:41is going to be relevant to you so first
  22. 0:43things first we just flip it over we're
  23. 0:45going to undo this tab on the back to
  24. 0:48gain access to the mac and we'll take
  25. 0:50off the top box okay now the first thing
  26. 0:53you need to do is obviously just take
  27. 0:54everything out and just make sure that
  28. 0:56everything's actually in the box so
  29. 0:58generally the way that MacBooks come
  30. 0:59pack packag is you'll have the MacBook
  31. 1:01in a protective sleeve up the top so
  32. 1:03we'll just put that to the side for now
  33. 1:05uh we're also going to have the charger
  34. 1:08cable which is going to be the next
  35. 1:09thing you see this one is a black color
  36. 1:12obviously because I have the space black
  37. 1:14color your particular color might differ
  38. 1:16depending on the Mac you've selected
  39. 1:18next up we have the documentation now
  40. 1:20there's not really anything too
  41. 1:22interesting in here uh you'll get a
  42. 1:24quick guide uh you'll also get an Apple
  43. 1:26sticker which is pretty useless unless
  44. 1:28you have an annoying that you want to
  45. 1:31stick this on their forehead um but
  46. 1:33generally you don't really need to worry
  47. 1:35about this for warranty purposes just
  48. 1:36keep your invoice um whether it was an
  49. 1:39online or a physical purchase just keep
  50. 1:41a copy of that um and the rest of this
  51. 1:43stuff you just don't really need it so
  52. 1:46next up we have the charger now you can
  53. 1:49see here that obviously I'm located in
  54. 1:50Australia so I'm going to have the
  55. 1:52Australian adapter um but the way this
  56. 1:54works is quite simple you have a little
  57. 1:56USB port right there uh you'll have a
  58. 1:59another us USB port here if I undo that
  59. 2:03and take off the packaging you'll see
  60. 2:05that it just sticks right in there and
  61. 2:07then you can use that to plug into your
  62. 2:09MacBook the other end of course the mag
  63. 2:11safe adapter and you're good to go for
  64. 2:12charging now one thing you may not know
  65. 2:15about these charges is the head is
  66. 2:17actually removable and interchangeable
  67. 2:19so all you need to do is obviously it
  68. 2:22helps if you disconnect the cable first
  69. 2:24uh you just pull it from here and sort
  70. 2:25of pull it away from the body and you
  71. 2:28can see now we have two separate pieces
  72. 2:31there and what you can do now is if this
  73. 2:33thing gets damaged you can replace that
  74. 2:35throw it out by a new one or
  75. 2:36alternatively if you go traveling you
  76. 2:39can actually bring this with you and you
  77. 2:41can buy an international travel adapter
  78. 2:43head kit and you can then use those to
  79. 2:46swap in and out depending on whichever
  80. 2:48country you're traveling to so this is a
  81. 2:50really easy way to not only charge your
  82. 2:53MacBook internationally when you travel
  83. 2:55but as I mentioned before this is a USBC
  84. 2:57Port so you can plug any USBC cable in
  85. 3:00here and charge cameras phones uh
  86. 3:03portable battery packs you name it I
  87. 3:05will put a link to those international
  88. 3:07travel adapters down in the description
  89. 3:09as well as a video that I made going
  90. 3:10over my favorite MacBook accessories if
  91. 3:13you want to check that out okay so let's
  92. 3:15get the box and the packaging out of the
  93. 3:17way and we're going to focus on the PD
  94. 3:19resistance which is the MacBook now you
  95. 3:22might think I'm a weirdo for doing this
  96. 3:23but I always smell my new Apple products
  97. 3:26they just they have this really specific
  98. 3:29smell about I don't know if it's the
  99. 3:30smell of regret of emptying out my bank
  100. 3:33account or apple put something in the
  101. 3:34packaging but they just smell so good
  102. 3:36and I thought I was a weirdo until I
  103. 3:38made a video where I sniffed a Macbook
  104. 3:41and uh a lot of you guys commented and
  105. 3:43say you do the exact same thing so if
  106. 3:44that's something you're into give it a
  107. 3:46sniff I don't know maybe it's just me
  108. 3:48but apart from that what we're going to
  109. 3:49do now is we're going to take the
  110. 3:51MacBook out of the packaging now
  111. 3:53generally I like to open it up by just
  112. 3:56peeling this back so you can see the
  113. 3:57back chassis and one thing you really
  114. 3:59want to concentrate on here is just
  115. 4:01checking that there's no damage or
  116. 4:04fingerprints or smears or marks or
  117. 4:06anything like that on the actual chassis
  118. 4:09of the MacBook now there's a 99.9%
  119. 4:11chance that this is a brand new Macbook
  120. 4:14and no one's ever touched it before but
  121. 4:16you know sometimes stuff happens you
  122. 4:18know refurbished stock or used stock
  123. 4:20gets mixed around so just make sure that
  124. 4:23you do have a brand new model now some
  125. 4:25easy ways of telling that is obviously
  126. 4:26look for scratches or dust or anything
  127. 4:28like that uh check these feet here make
  128. 4:31sure there's no scratches or marks check
  129. 4:33the chassis that looks nice and clean no
  130. 4:35fingerprints and then you can flip it
  131. 4:37over look at the Apple logo as well it's
  132. 4:39nice and shiny and clean so this one
  133. 4:41looks good so for example if you have
  134. 4:44pulled it out and the Apple logo is kind
  135. 4:47of greasy or marked up like that that's
  136. 4:49a pretty good indication that this is
  137. 4:51not a brand new product and if that's
  138. 4:53the case just take it straight back to
  139. 4:55where you purchase it from and just get
  140. 4:57a replacement okay now that the fun part
  141. 4:59is out of the way let's put this down on
  142. 5:01a table open the lid and start setting
  143. 5:04it up now typically with these modern
  144. 5:06MacBooks as soon as you open the lid uh
  145. 5:08it's actually going to turn itself on
  146. 5:10you can see there you can see the Apple
  147. 5:11logo you can hear the startup chime uh
  148. 5:13we're just going to very gently peel
  149. 5:16this paper covering you can just kind of
  150. 5:18use your fingers to just sort of pinch
  151. 5:19it here and just pull it off like that
  152. 5:21and generally I will just keep this in
  153. 5:23the packaging um in case I go to sell it
  154. 5:26or send it back to the manufacturer or
  155. 5:27whatever in the future and as you can
  156. 5:29see now we are at the setup screen now
  157. 5:32just before we get into the setup
  158. 5:34process you've probably bought your new
  159. 5:36computer to do things on right and some
  160. 5:38of those things may be creative in
  161. 5:40nature like me travel photography is one
  162. 5:43of my hobbies but after I've actually
  163. 5:45taken the shots I am not very good at
  164. 5:47editing them in Adobe and that's where
  165. 5:49the sponsor for this section of the
  166. 5:50video comes in skillshare now I was
  167. 5:53having issues organizing my Lightroom
  168. 5:55Library not to mention actually getting
  169. 5:57good at editing my Raw photos I I found
  170. 5:59this class on skillshare by lotus Carol
  171. 6:01and I found out that I can actually add
  172. 6:03keywords and metadata to my photos to
  173. 6:05help sort and organize them which is
  174. 6:07super handy when you've just gotten back
  175. 6:09from a trip to Japan with thousands of
  176. 6:11photos now if you're not familiar with
  177. 6:13skillshare it's the largest online
  178. 6:14learning community for creatives with
  179. 6:16thousands of classes led by industry
  180. 6:18experts across a wide range of topics
  181. 6:21from illustration photography and
  182. 6:23graphic design to productivity marketing
  183. 6:25and even business and what's unique
  184. 6:27about skillshare is it's learned by
  185. 6:29doing approach you don't just watch
  186. 6:31classes you create and share projects as
  187. 6:33you learn and if you're unsure about
  188. 6:35where to even start skillshare designed
  189. 6:37learning paths that help you explore and
  190. 6:40build a skill from zero to Pro level and
  191. 6:42right now the first 500 people to use my
  192. 6:45link down in the description will
  193. 6:46receive a one month free trial of
  194. 6:49skillshare okay so now we are going to
  195. 6:51set this MacBook up from brand new now
  196. 6:53again if you've already done this or you
  197. 6:55already know how to do this you can just
  198. 6:57use the timestamps down below to skip uh
  199. 7:00but if you want to just follow along
  200. 7:01with me I'm going to walk you through
  201. 7:03each step what it means and what you
  202. 7:05should select so first of all this is
  203. 7:07pretty explanatory it's going to ask you
  204. 7:09what language you want to do the setup
  205. 7:11in so I'm just going to choose English
  206. 7:13and then it's going to ask you what
  207. 7:14country or region you are located in so
  208. 7:16again just try to set this to your
  209. 7:19country or region because it's going to
  210. 7:21cause issues later on if you don't uh
  211. 7:23such as different keyboard layouts and
  212. 7:25settings options and things like that
  213. 7:27I'm located in Australia so I'm going to
  214. 7:28click austalia and then click continue
  215. 7:30the next screen is going to show you
  216. 7:32what written and spoken languages you
  217. 7:34want on the device so for my region
  218. 7:36Australia the default options for
  219. 7:38preferred languages is English us uh US
  220. 7:41keyboard and also English United States
  221. 7:44dictation now if you want you can jump
  222. 7:46down here and click customize settings
  223. 7:48so if you do live in a specific region
  224. 7:51such as the United States but you speak
  225. 7:53another language primarily such as you
  226. 7:55know German or Russian or whatever uh
  227. 7:57you can come in here and add that if you
  228. 7:59so wish so you can see if I click the
  229. 8:01plus icon uh you can you know choose
  230. 8:04basically whatever language you want to
  231. 8:06use so I'm happy with us English I'm
  232. 8:08going to click continue I'm also happy
  233. 8:10with the US keyboard and I'm also happy
  234. 8:12with English United States dictation
  235. 8:14again you can customize all of this here
  236. 8:17or you can do it later on in the
  237. 8:18settings if you wish Now accessibility
  238. 8:20is pretty straightforward if you are
  239. 8:22Vision motor hearing or cognitive
  240. 8:24impaired in any way you have a couple of
  241. 8:27options here that's going to make using
  242. 8:28this MacBook a little bit easier so if
  243. 8:30you're not sure what the MacBook offers
  244. 8:32you can actually click on each of these
  245. 8:34things and it's going to give you a
  246. 8:36little synopsis of what exactly that
  247. 8:38feature provides so for example hearing
  248. 8:40uh you can get closed captions on the
  249. 8:42screen uh for cognitive you can change
  250. 8:44the appearance and everything like that
  251. 8:46um I don't personally use any of these
  252. 8:49so I'm just going to click continue now
  253. 8:51the next thing we need to do is
  254. 8:52connecting this MacBook to your internet
  255. 8:55whether that's a wired ethernet
  256. 8:56connection or a Wi-Fi network now if you
  257. 8:59already know the Wi-Fi password you can
  258. 9:01just click on your network and then
  259. 9:03enter in the password there if you don't
  260. 9:05know it generally it's on the back of
  261. 9:07your router uh sometimes isps will
  262. 9:09actually send you a little card with
  263. 9:11your SSID or your network your Wi-Fi
  264. 9:14network name and also the password
  265. 9:16listed on there so go and grab that now
  266. 9:19uh if you don't have a wireless
  267. 9:21connection or if you want the fastest
  268. 9:22speeds possible I do actually recommend
  269. 9:25buying a cheap ethernet to USBC adapter
  270. 9:28and that's going to let you attach your
  271. 9:30MacBook directly to your router to get
  272. 9:32the fastest possible speeds so for me my
  273. 9:35wi-fi is plenty fast so I'm going to
  274. 9:37click it here and I'm going to type in
  275. 9:39my password okay so the next option once
  276. 9:42we are connected to our internet is data
  277. 9:45and privacy so if you want to you can
  278. 9:47click learn more uh to Read All About It
  279. 9:50um if you have a spare 2 or 3 days to
  280. 9:53read through all of it uh typically
  281. 9:55you're probably just going to be like me
  282. 9:57and click continue and just trust that
  283. 9:59that there's nothing super important in
  284. 10:00there now migration assistant is a very
  285. 10:03very helpful tool specifically if you're
  286. 10:05coming from a previous computer and you
  287. 10:07want to migrate your apps your files or
  288. 10:10your settings for example onto this new
  289. 10:13Macbook now this obviously works best if
  290. 10:15you're coming from a previous Mac for
  291. 10:17example an older MacBook and this is the
  292. 10:19replacement but you can also do it from
  293. 10:21a Windows PC or a time machine backup
  294. 10:25and this is super super simple the only
  295. 10:27thing you need is both devices need to
  296. 10:29be connected to the same network so your
  297. 10:31home network and it's going to do
  298. 10:33everything over the network and it might
  299. 10:35take a few hours depending on how much
  300. 10:36data you have but it's a very simple
  301. 10:38process I will link an Apple support
  302. 10:40article down in the description of this
  303. 10:42video with more information on this now
  304. 10:44for the purpose of this video I'm going
  305. 10:45to click not now in the bottom leftand
  306. 10:48corner because I don't really want to
  307. 10:49wait 2 or 3 hours for migration
  308. 10:51assistant to do its thing um but also
  309. 10:54consider you know if you're only
  310. 10:55upgrading your laptops every 5 years or
  311. 10:58so uh consider not using migration
  312. 11:01assistant and just starting from Fresh
  313. 11:03So at that point you can set everything
  314. 11:05up again from fresh uh if you had any
  315. 11:08issues with your previous Mac so it was
  316. 11:10slowing down or there was bugs or
  317. 11:12glitches or anything like that sometimes
  318. 11:14it's good to just start fresh every
  319. 11:16couple of years so that's what I
  320. 11:17personally do when I upgrade my MacBooks
  321. 11:20after 3 to 5 years uh and if you want to
  322. 11:22do that again you just click not now so
  323. 11:25the next step is signing in with your
  324. 11:26Apple ID now you probably already have
  325. 11:29an Apple ID and if that's the case you
  326. 11:31can pop it in here if you don't uh you
  327. 11:33can create a new Apple ID here or if
  328. 11:35you've forgotten the password uh it'll
  329. 11:37have all the links to do that process
  330. 11:39here now if you're having any issues
  331. 11:41signing in uh you totally don't need to
  332. 11:43do this at this stage you can still set
  333. 11:45the laptop up and do that at a later
  334. 11:48stage so that's what I'm going to do now
  335. 11:50by clicking set up later down in the
  336. 11:52bottom leftand corner then we have the
  337. 11:54terms and conditions again you probably
  338. 11:56don't want to read that and this is
  339. 11:57where you can create your your user
  340. 11:59account so uh full name you can just put
  341. 12:02in your first name if you want so I'm
  342. 12:03just going to put this as Liam you don't
  343. 12:05need the last name account name uh
  344. 12:07generally I'm just going to put Liam as
  345. 12:09well this is just going to be the name
  346. 12:11of the actual folder where all of your
  347. 12:12user documents are stored on Mac OS so
  348. 12:15I'm just going to put Liam password I'm
  349. 12:17just going to put my usual password that
  350. 12:19I put in and hint totally up to you I've
  351. 12:23been using the same user password for a
  352. 12:24few years uh I don't really need a hint
  353. 12:27but again up to you don't forget to also
  354. 12:29edit your little profile picture up here
  355. 12:31so you can click edit and then you have
  356. 12:33a couple of different options here so
  357. 12:35you can set a Emoji uh or an emoji and
  358. 12:38you can take a photo of yourself if you
  359. 12:40want or you can select a previous photo
  360. 12:43if you have a nicer picture of yourself
  361. 12:45you can use that here as well personally
  362. 12:47I just like to use the memojis I'll set
  363. 12:49myself as a Little Koala because I'm
  364. 12:51Australian and I'm just going to click
  365. 12:52save there again you can edit all of
  366. 12:54this at a later stage except the account
  367. 12:57name that is something you cannot edit
  368. 12:59so make sure you get that right during
  369. 13:01this setup process okay at that stage we
  370. 13:03are going to click continue so next we
  371. 13:05have location services now this works
  372. 13:07pretty much the exact same way as it
  373. 13:09does on your iPhone if you have one it
  374. 13:11just allows apps and services to use the
  375. 13:14current location that your MacBook is
  376. 13:16located at now this can be really
  377. 13:18helpful especially if you're using Maps
  378. 13:19it will just automatically detect your
  379. 13:21location and then uh give you the
  380. 13:23estimated travel time to where you're
  381. 13:24searching for example again you can
  382. 13:26totally edit all of this later so for
  383. 13:29now I'm just going to enable that and
  384. 13:31I'm going to click continue so this next
  385. 13:32section is asking your permission to
  386. 13:34share Mac analytics with apple or share
  387. 13:37crash and usage data with app developers
  388. 13:40now all this means is if there's any
  389. 13:42issues with your Mac on the operating
  390. 13:44system or any of the apps that you're
  391. 13:46using so for example if it crashes or
  392. 13:49there's just compatibility issues uh
  393. 13:51those Anonymous logs are going to be
  394. 13:53sent to either apple or the app
  395. 13:55developer to help them improve or fix
  396. 13:58that particular app or software now it
  397. 14:01is completely Anonymous there's no
  398. 14:02personal data it doesn't slow it down it
  399. 14:04doesn't take up disk space it's really
  400. 14:06just up to your personal preference if
  401. 14:08you want to help out apple or the app
  402. 14:10developers so for me personally I'm just
  403. 14:12going to tick both of them because again
  404. 14:15there's nothing personal there it has no
  405. 14:17impact on me uh and I'm just going to
  406. 14:19click continue so you're probably pretty
  407. 14:20familiar with screen time already it's
  408. 14:22already on your iPhone and all it does
  409. 14:25is it just tracks how much time you
  410. 14:26spend on your laptop each day and each
  411. 14:29week and gives you a detailed breakdown
  412. 14:31so you can see exactly where you're
  413. 14:33spending your time now generally when I
  414. 14:35look at my screen time at the end of the
  415. 14:37week uh it is it's nothing good it's
  416. 14:39always negative uh because I'm clearly
  417. 14:42spending too much time on Reddit or
  418. 14:44YouTube but uh you know it is quite
  419. 14:46effective as you've probably already
  420. 14:47seen on the iPhone you can set it up
  421. 14:49later but generally I like to leave it
  422. 14:51on because it will send you a message
  423. 14:53once a week um just giving you a rough
  424. 14:55idea of how much time you're spending in
  425. 14:57certain things so I'm going to to click
  426. 14:59continue here so moving on to series
  427. 15:01setup you will notice a common theme
  428. 15:03here that is that pretty much everything
  429. 15:05you have on iOS on your iPhone is also
  430. 15:08now on Mac OS so this works the exact
  431. 15:11same way as your iPhone uh if you want
  432. 15:13to enable ask Siri you can uh and I'm
  433. 15:16just going to do that because I like to
  434. 15:17use Siri on my Mac so I'm just going to
  435. 15:20click continue you have a couple of
  436. 15:21options here I recommend just giving a
  437. 15:23quick listen to all of them you can
  438. 15:25change this later in the settings if you
  439. 15:27want I'm just going to select voice one
  440. 15:29and click continue and I'm going to hit
  441. 15:31continue again and all you need to do
  442. 15:33here is just speak at a normal volume
  443. 15:35read the sentences on the screen so that
  444. 15:37Siri can acclimate to your specific
  445. 15:39voice okay now Siri is ready let's go
  446. 15:42continue now this section is very
  447. 15:43similar to the analytics section apple
  448. 15:45is asking you if you give Apple your
  449. 15:48permission to share voice recordings
  450. 15:50that you make to Siri uh and share them
  451. 15:53with Apple so that Apple can improve the
  452. 15:55Siri product now again this is
  453. 15:57relatively an Anonymous but at the end
  454. 16:00of the day it is your voice and certain
  455. 16:02Snippets of what you are sharing with
  456. 16:04Siri that's being sent to Apple so it's
  457. 16:07kind of up to you whether or not you
  458. 16:09trust Apple to not abuse those
  459. 16:10recordings or to keep it 100% private I
  460. 16:13personally haven't seen Apple abuse any
  461. 16:15of this but um just for privacy and
  462. 16:18peace of mind generally I will just
  463. 16:19click not now uh to not share voice
  464. 16:22Snippets with apple just to ER on the
  465. 16:24side of caution and so we'll click
  466. 16:26continue okay now we get to set up Touch
  467. 16:28ID now if you've already set up Touch ID
  468. 16:30on a previous MacBook it's the exact
  469. 16:32same process but if this is your first
  470. 16:34time ever using Touch ID congratulations
  471. 16:37because it is a lot better than entering
  472. 16:39in your password every time so to do
  473. 16:41Touch ID we're just going to click
  474. 16:43continue and we just going to place
  475. 16:45whatever finger you want to use to
  476. 16:47unlock the Mac generally it's the finger
  477. 16:49on your right hand your index finger
  478. 16:50you're just going to place that on top
  479. 16:52of the circle and we're going to tap it
  480. 16:55multiple times you don't really need to
  481. 16:57get the edges just the flat part of your
  482. 16:59finger where the main part of your
  483. 17:01fingerprint is just press that down
  484. 17:03several times now after a few Taps the
  485. 17:05message on the screen is going to change
  486. 17:07and ask you to do the edges of your
  487. 17:09finger so make sure you get the very tip
  488. 17:10just under your nail and all around it
  489. 17:12because it's just going to improve the
  490. 17:14accuracy of touch ID so I'm going to go
  491. 17:16to the very tip a few times the very
  492. 17:18base around the edges and now you'll see
  493. 17:21that touch ID is ready so we're going to
  494. 17:23click continue now bear in mind with
  495. 17:26Touch ID you can actually add multiple
  496. 17:28fingers later on and I will show you how
  497. 17:29to do that but for now that is it you
  498. 17:31have fully set up your Macbook uh we are
  499. 17:34on the desktop and you can now start
  500. 17:36using it okay so now I'm going to show
  501. 17:38you some tips and tricks and also some
  502. 17:39things that I like to tweak and change
  503. 17:42on my particular MacBook just to improve
  504. 17:45your usability and your experience now
  505. 17:48let's start with the desktop now we
  506. 17:50obviously have the dock here uh and you
  507. 17:52can actually resize this quickly and
  508. 17:54easily using this little black line in
  509. 17:57the corner if you click and hold on that
  510. 17:59and then drag it up or down it's going
  511. 18:01to allow you to quickly resize the dock
  512. 18:04uh alternatively you can also customize
  513. 18:06what app icons you want displayed down
  514. 18:09here on the dock so for example if we
  515. 18:11don't want the photos app icon we can
  516. 18:14click and hold on it that's going to
  517. 18:15bring up a menu system and we can come
  518. 18:17up here to options and we can hover over
  519. 18:20this and go remove from dock
  520. 18:22alternatively let's say we don't want
  521. 18:24the apps icon there an even quicker way
  522. 18:26of removing it from the dock is simply
  523. 18:28dragging it off onto the desktop you'll
  524. 18:31see it now says remove and we're just
  525. 18:32going to release and it's going to
  526. 18:35disappear now if we want an apps icon to
  527. 18:38appear down here if it's not already
  528. 18:40let's say for example we want the photos
  529. 18:42app back up there uh open up the
  530. 18:44application and then come down here
  531. 18:46where it says photos click and hold and
  532. 18:49then while continuously holding down I'm
  533. 18:52going to come to options and then keep
  534. 18:54in Dock and we can also click and hold
  535. 18:57and drag this to to reorder it now while
  536. 18:59we're on the desktop if you want to
  537. 19:01change the desktop wallpaper there are
  538. 19:03two ways of doing it so the first
  539. 19:05quickest and easiest is by simply right
  540. 19:07clicking on the desktop and then
  541. 19:09clicking change wallpaper or
  542. 19:11alternatively you can also come up here
  543. 19:12to the Apple logo system settings and
  544. 19:15then you can come down here to wallpaper
  545. 19:18now you get a ton of different options
  546. 19:19for the wallpaper so obviously you can
  547. 19:21just add your own personal photo of your
  548. 19:23family or friends or whatever or you
  549. 19:25have some built-in options on Mac OS
  550. 19:28itself so you have lots of different
  551. 19:30Dynamic wallpapers here so these will
  552. 19:32actually change colors throughout the
  553. 19:33day um or you can come down here and do
  554. 19:36some Landscapes or cityscapes so for
  555. 19:38example this one here Dubai Skyline it's
  556. 19:41actually going to be an animated
  557. 19:42wallpaper which looks really really cool
  558. 19:45um however you do have to download these
  559. 19:47it's a couple of megabytes it doesn't
  560. 19:48take too long um but I'm just going to
  561. 19:50leave this as the default Sonoma
  562. 19:52wallpaper for now now while we are in
  563. 19:55the settings here there's a couple of
  564. 19:57options that you should probably be
  565. 19:58changed so the first one is going to be
  566. 20:00in general and then software update so
  567. 20:03it's always a good idea to do an update
  568. 20:06when you first buy and set up a Mac
  569. 20:08because it's probably been sitting in a
  570. 20:09warehouse for a couple of months and so
  571. 20:11the software is going to be out of date
  572. 20:13so you can see here I do have one update
  573. 20:15available so I can actually click update
  574. 20:17now and that will download and then
  575. 20:19install also I recommend to enable
  576. 20:22automatic updates so you can see here
  577. 20:24there's an option for automatic updates
  578. 20:26and if you click this little I icon you
  579. 20:28have full control over what you want to
  580. 20:30update so I recommend leaving these
  581. 20:33options as they are by default so check
  582. 20:35for updates turned on download new
  583. 20:37updates when available turned on and
  584. 20:39also install security responses and
  585. 20:41system files uh I generally leave these
  586. 20:44two unticked um just because that gives
  587. 20:47you the option to actually install them
  588. 20:49when you want but in general it is very
  589. 20:51important to keep your MacBook as
  590. 20:53updated as possible so it's not only
  591. 20:55going to ensure the performance is solid
  592. 20:57by fixing previous bugs and issues in
  593. 21:00Prior versions of the Mac OS software
  594. 21:02but it's also good for security so if
  595. 21:04there's any new viruses or exploits or
  596. 21:06anything out there that people can use
  597. 21:08to potentially gain access to your
  598. 21:10computer um having those automatic
  599. 21:12updates turned on specifically the
  600. 21:14security updates is very important to
  601. 21:16prevent that from happening now speaking
  602. 21:18of security let's also jump into the
  603. 21:20security settings of your MacBook
  604. 21:21because there's a couple of different
  605. 21:22things that I like to do on my MacBook
  606. 21:25so if we scroll down here there's going
  607. 21:27to be an option for privacy and security
  608. 21:29now there's a couple of options here for
  609. 21:32privacy uh I'm not going to go into all
  610. 21:34of these because there's quite a lot but
  611. 21:36generally the way that Mac OS sets it up
  612. 21:38on by default is good and you should
  613. 21:41just kind of leave it the way it is you
  614. 21:42can jump in here and tweak things uh
  615. 21:44particularly if there's an app you're
  616. 21:46using that you know needs you to change
  617. 21:48something here you can come in and
  618. 21:50customize this but I like to go right
  619. 21:52down the bottom here and come to file
  620. 21:55Vault now think of file vault as turn
  621. 21:58turning your Mac into kind of like a
  622. 21:59safe or a vault that you need a key to
  623. 22:02open and this is very very good if
  624. 22:04someone steals your Mac or your Mac gets
  625. 22:06lost it means it's going to be
  626. 22:08impossible for them to access any
  627. 22:10private data on the macc's internal SSD
  628. 22:13or hard drive so you can see here file
  629. 22:15Vault says that it secures the data on
  630. 22:17your dis by encrypting its content
  631. 22:19automatically and a couple of important
  632. 22:21things to note you will need your login
  633. 22:23password or a recovery key to access
  634. 22:26your data and a recover key is
  635. 22:28automatically generated as part of this
  636. 22:31setup now if you forget both your
  637. 22:33password and recovery key the data will
  638. 22:36be lost now this is totally up to you
  639. 22:38it's not necessary that you turn this on
  640. 22:40it's just really good Peace of Mind
  641. 22:43especially if you're outside of your
  642. 22:44home a lot and you're at cafes or you're
  643. 22:46at school or you're at work if your
  644. 22:48MacBook gets lost or stolen uh no one's
  645. 22:51going to be able to access it so and I'm
  646. 22:53actually going to use my iCloud to
  647. 22:56unlock my disc and reset my password if
  648. 22:59I forget it the other option is you can
  649. 23:00create a recovery key which you can then
  650. 23:03like print out and store somewhere uh
  651. 23:05but generally iCloud is easier now I'm
  652. 23:07not going to run through the rest of
  653. 23:08this setup in this video I will leave a
  654. 23:11support article on the Apple website
  655. 23:13that will have any questions you want
  656. 23:14there but it's just something I
  657. 23:15recommend doing if you are out and about
  658. 23:18with your laptop and you want to really
  659. 23:20lock it down in case it gets stolen or
  660. 23:22lost okay so while we're still in the
  661. 23:23settings another thing I like to do is
  662. 23:25customize the trackpad so if we come
  663. 23:28right down the bottom here and we click
  664. 23:29on trackpad uh one thing I like to turn
  665. 23:32on straight away on all of my new
  666. 23:34MacBooks is tap to click so if I'm
  667. 23:36turning that on it means that you can
  668. 23:38simply tap very lightly on the trackpad
  669. 23:41to select something rather than having
  670. 23:42to press down and put some Force onto it
  671. 23:45now you can also come up here and
  672. 23:46customize the secondary click now
  673. 23:48secondary click is essentially if you
  674. 23:51had a physical Mouse and you clicking
  675. 23:52the right button uh that's the secondary
  676. 23:55click on Mac OS so by default if it is
  677. 23:58tap with two fingers which I generally
  678. 24:00leave it at and all that is is just
  679. 24:01getting two fingers tapping it on the
  680. 24:03trackpad and you can see that is a right
  681. 24:05click but like I said there's a couple
  682. 24:07of options here uh but I decid to leave
  683. 24:09it at tap two fingers now the other
  684. 24:11thing I like to change here is coming
  685. 24:13into scroll and zoom I like to turn
  686. 24:16natural scrolling off so by default uh
  687. 24:19this is the way you scroll up by pulling
  688. 24:23down towards you and if you want to
  689. 24:24scroll down you push away from you and
  690. 24:27for some people that doesn't really feel
  691. 24:29natural like the name suggests so by
  692. 24:31switching natural scrolling off uh if we
  693. 24:34come back here now if I use my two
  694. 24:36fingers to scroll
  695. 24:37up and then I can scroll down it just
  696. 24:40feels more natural to me but that's
  697. 24:42totally up to personal
  698. 24:49preference okay so let's say for example
  699. 24:51you want to record the screen or take
  700. 24:53some screenshots and this is a really
  701. 24:55really good feature in Mac OS that I
  702. 24:58think is a lot better than Windows if
  703. 25:00you've used Windows 11 anytime recently
  704. 25:02so to record the screen or take
  705. 25:04screenshots there are a couple of
  706. 25:06shortcuts you can use on the keyboard so
  707. 25:08the quickest and easiest one is to just
  708. 25:10take a screenshot of the entire screen
  709. 25:12hold down command hold down shift and
  710. 25:15then press three and you see that that's
  711. 25:17going to now take a screenshot you can
  712. 25:19see it down in the bottom there and what
  713. 25:21that's going to do is it's just going to
  714. 25:22save it directly to your desktop so we
  715. 25:24can see it here we can also press the
  716. 25:26space bar to do a quick look that's
  717. 25:28another keyboard shortcut for you and
  718. 25:31you can see we have a screenshot there
  719. 25:33um what I'm going to do now is just
  720. 25:34delete that I don't need it anymore
  721. 25:36there's two ways of doing that you can
  722. 25:38just click and drag it and drop it in
  723. 25:41the trash can or another keyboard
  724. 25:44shortcut hold command and then delete
  725. 25:46and that's going to send it to the trash
  726. 25:48so that was command shift 3 to take a
  727. 25:51screenshot of the entire screen if we
  728. 25:53want to take a screenshot of a
  729. 25:54particular section like a smaller
  730. 25:56section let's say for example we want to
  731. 25:58take a screenshot of the Safari icon
  732. 26:01down in the corner we're going to go
  733. 26:03command shift and then instead of three
  734. 26:05we're going to hit four and you can see
  735. 26:07now we have this little square pointer
  736. 26:10and we can now click and drag over this
  737. 26:14area release and that's going to take a
  738. 26:16screenshot of that specific area now
  739. 26:19alternatively if you want to record the
  740. 26:20screen we can go command shift and then
  741. 26:23five what that's going to do is it's
  742. 26:25actually going to give us a couple of
  743. 26:27different op options here so uh we can
  744. 26:29capture the entire screen uh we can
  745. 26:32capture selected window or we can
  746. 26:34capture selected portions and that's
  747. 26:36going to be for the screenshots you have
  748. 26:37more customization alternatively we can
  749. 26:40record the entire screen or we can
  750. 26:42record a selected portion and if we
  751. 26:45click selected portion we can obviously
  752. 26:47drag this so if there's like a certain
  753. 26:50section of your screen you want to just
  754. 26:51cut out for privacy purposes and record
  755. 26:53you can do that um but I generally just
  756. 26:56record the whole screen we also have
  757. 26:58some options here so we can choose where
  758. 26:59the screenshots and Screen recordings
  759. 27:01are saved to like I said before default
  760. 27:04is desktop or we can go documents mail
  761. 27:07messages um or you can click other
  762. 27:09location so if I click that we can
  763. 27:12actually specify a specific folder for
  764. 27:15all new screen recordings and
  765. 27:17screenshots to go into so let's say for
  766. 27:19example you're a university student and
  767. 27:21you're preparing material for a lecture
  768. 27:24or you're at work and you want to
  769. 27:26prepare things for particular meeting at
  770. 27:28work we can come in here to let's say
  771. 27:31for example our documents folder create
  772. 27:33a new folder and call it meeting or or
  773. 27:38lecture number one we'll create that
  774. 27:41we'll select it and then we'll click
  775. 27:43choose and now if we take a screen
  776. 27:46recording or a screenshot uh it's
  777. 27:48actually going to save it to that
  778. 27:50specific folder so it's really good for
  779. 27:51organizing everything um if you have
  780. 27:53different things you want to screenshot
  781. 27:55and screen record so for example let's
  782. 27:57take a screen recording we're just going
  783. 27:58to click on the screen uh you can see up
  784. 28:01here this is where you can actually stop
  785. 28:03the screen recording this little round
  786. 28:06uh circle with a square in it so we're
  787. 28:08going to click that to stop it you can
  788. 28:10see it's now saved and if we now come
  789. 28:12back to that location which was in our
  790. 28:14documents folder we can see meeting or
  791. 28:16lecture one folder and if we go inside
  792. 28:19that we now have that specific screen
  793. 28:21recording now another really powerful
  794. 28:23feature I want to talk about is having
  795. 28:24multiple desktops on your Mac now like
  796. 28:27the name suggests it just means you can
  797. 28:29have multiple screens open at the same
  798. 28:31time and very quickly and easily switch
  799. 28:33between them it's kind of like having
  800. 28:35two different monitors but on the same
  801. 28:37screen now to set up multiple desktops
  802. 28:40there's two ways we can either press the
  803. 28:42F3 key up the top here or we can use the
  804. 28:45three finger swipe on the trackpad swipe
  805. 28:48up and that will give us the desktop
  806. 28:50window so we can come up here and click
  807. 28:53the add button over here to add an
  808. 28:55additional desktop and we can then and
  809. 28:57click on this which is now called
  810. 28:58desktop 2 now one thing I like to do on
  811. 29:01a secondary or even a third or fourth
  812. 29:03desktop is change the wallpaper so that
  813. 29:05I know which desktop I'm currently on
  814. 29:07just by looking at the wallpaper so to
  815. 29:09do that we just right click on the
  816. 29:11desktop go to change wallpaper you may
  817. 29:13remember this from before and then we
  818. 29:16want to uh disable show on all spaces
  819. 29:19and then we're going to change the
  820. 29:21wallpaper of desktop too so for example
  821. 29:23I'm just going to use the same syoma
  822. 29:25wallpaper but I'm going to switch it to
  823. 29:27the dark mode and now if we use the same
  824. 29:30three finger gesture or we press the F3
  825. 29:33key uh you can see that my desktops now
  826. 29:36have different wallpapers and to switch
  827. 29:38between them it's very very easy swipe
  828. 29:41up with your three fingers or press F3
  829. 29:44and then you can just click on whichever
  830. 29:46desktop you want to go to alternatively
  831. 29:49you can hold down control and use the
  832. 29:51arrow keys to switch between them and
  833. 29:54this is very very powerful so let's say
  834. 29:55for example I have
  835. 29:57um you know google.com open here and I'm
  836. 30:02doing some research and then I have some
  837. 30:06notes open here so a Word document or an
  838. 30:08Excel spreadsheet or whatever uh I can
  839. 30:11now very quickly and easily switch
  840. 30:14between these two desktops without
  841. 30:15having to minimize things or cram
  842. 30:17everything into one screen so again
  843. 30:19control left or right Keys alternatively
  844. 30:23use those handy three fingers and you
  845. 30:25can swipe between them like that very
  846. 30:27very powerful stuff and again you can
  847. 30:29come up here uh and you can add multiple
  848. 30:32desktops so you can have you know 2
  849. 30:34three four five uh and you can also come
  850. 30:36up here see little X you can close
  851. 30:38desktops down that you no longer need
  852. 30:40now installing apps is very very easy
  853. 30:42let's say for example you want to
  854. 30:44install Chrome just go to Google on
  855. 30:46Safari type in Chrome and you can now
  856. 30:49download that it's very simple
  857. 30:50alternatively you can go to the App
  858. 30:52Store uh you can come down here to the
  859. 30:54Launchpad and go app store and you can
  860. 30:57search for any applications that you
  861. 30:59want to download you do have to be
  862. 31:01signed into your Apple ID account to do
  863. 31:04that um but there's a pretty good range
  864. 31:06of apps that you can download speaking
  865. 31:08of applications to download you can get
  866. 31:10an app called magnet which is totally
  867. 31:11free it's open source doesn't cost you
  868. 31:13anything uh that allows you to actually
  869. 31:15snap and resize windows on your Mac
  870. 31:19desktop so this is something that is a
  871. 31:21native feature on a Windows machine like
  872. 31:24Windows 11 but it is not on Mac and and
  873. 31:27the magnet app is a really really
  874. 31:29powerful app uh and if you also want to
  875. 31:31try out some different apps I recommend
  876. 31:33something called set app now this is not
  877. 31:36sponsored uh you know they're not paying
  878. 31:38me any money but if you jump onto the
  879. 31:40setup website you can get a one week
  880. 31:42free trial or possibly more if they have
  881. 31:44deals on and that's going to allow you
  882. 31:46to try out a bunch of different paid
  883. 31:48apps they've got hundreds of apps you
  884. 31:50can choose from uh and you can download
  885. 31:52them all try them out and then you can
  886. 31:54either continue on with the set app
  887. 31:56subscription get access to all of these
  888. 31:58apps for a monthly fee or you can just
  889. 32:01cancel your subscription and go onto
  890. 32:03that specific app's website or on the
  891. 32:05app store and buy it for a couple of
  892. 32:08dollars or however much it is and
  893. 32:09continue using it forever now some other
  894. 32:11services you can use are obviously
  895. 32:13iCloud I do definitely recommend iCloud
  896. 32:16uh if you didn't already sign in before
  897. 32:17to iCloud you can go Apple logo system
  898. 32:20settings then you can come up here and
  899. 32:22sign in to your iCloud and add that to
  900. 32:24your Mac and that allows you to
  901. 32:26instantly access all your your contacts
  902. 32:28your calendars your photos your emails
  903. 32:30uh and also any files that you may have
  904. 32:33stored on iCloud will automatically sync
  905. 32:35with your Mac and if you're really
  906. 32:36conscious about your internet usage and
  907. 32:38staying private or if you travel a lot
  908. 32:41you can definitely pick up a VPN as well
  909. 32:43again this video is not sponsored uh I
  910. 32:46don't make any money from VPN companies
  911. 32:48but I'll put three vpns that I'm either
  912. 32:50currently using or have used in the past
  913. 32:52and can vouch for on the screen now and
  914. 32:54I'll put some links down below to them
  915. 32:56now one final thing I will show you is
  916. 32:58the spotlight now you may already have
  917. 33:00used this um there's a couple of ways to
  918. 33:02access it you can click the F4 button
  919. 33:05here uh there will be by default a
  920. 33:07little icon up here that you can click
  921. 33:09or a keyboard shortcut is command and
  922. 33:11spacebar and this is a very very
  923. 33:13powerful Tool uh you can use to search
  924. 33:15files so for example my lecture 01 from
  925. 33:20University or whatever or
  926. 33:22meeting _ 04 for work or whatever or
  927. 33:25even certain photos so so um if let's
  928. 33:28say for example I had a trip to Thailand
  929. 33:31I can type in Thailand and it will
  930. 33:33actually list all the photos that I took
  931. 33:35in that particular location likewise if
  932. 33:37you have any photos of your pets or
  933. 33:39something on here so cat it will
  934. 33:41actually search through all of your
  935. 33:42photos and it can also do simple things
  936. 33:45like currency conversion or mathematics
  937. 33:47so if I do 50 * 50 it's going to give
  938. 33:51you that result or alternatively
  939. 33:54$100 to Australian it'll do that
  940. 33:57conversion right there and there's
  941. 33:59obviously a ton more stuff you can learn
  942. 34:01about your Mac and your Mac OS but this
  943. 34:04video is already getting kind of long I
  944. 34:06don't really want to overload you so I
  945. 34:08will link some videos down below uh you
  946. 34:10know some mac tips and tricks how to
  947. 34:12look after your battery how to clean it
  948. 34:14privacy and security and also some
  949. 34:16additional tips and tricks and some
  950. 34:18applications that I recommend so check
  951. 34:20all of that out in the video description
  952. 34:22but apart from that yeah enjoy your new
  953. 34:24Mac it is a great piece of techn
  954. 34:26techology I've enjoyed using mine for
  955. 34:29the last 10 or 15 years however long
  956. 34:31it's been and if you do have any
  957. 34:33questions or anything like that let me
  958. 34:34know down below but apart from that I'll
  959. 34:36catch you in the next
