How To Replace Your Brakes on Your Toyota and Lexus Like a Pro — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Hello and welcome to the Car channel. In
- 0:03today's video, I'm going to show you how
- 0:04to replace the front brakes and rear
- 0:06brakes on your Toyota Lexus. Kind of
- 0:08like a comprehensive guide. I'm going to
- 0:09try to cover every single model with the
- 0:11details or whatnot. How to do it
- 0:13yourself. Do it properly, not have
- 0:15issues. This is probably the number two
- 0:18job you will tackle as a DIYer after an
- 0:20oil change. Something simple you can do.
- 0:23However, brakes are safety a safety
- 0:26item. You want to do them right. That's
- 0:28very important. So, let's get started.
- 0:30We'll do the brakes on this 2015 ES350.
- 0:33We'll talk about everything in
- 0:40detail. So, let's start with the very
- 0:42basics. We need to remove the wheels to
- 0:44the brakes. So, if you're doing this
- 0:46DIY, you're likely working on the floor.
- 0:48We are blessed here. We have a shop. We
- 0:50have a lift to lift the car, work
- 0:51comfortably. But, you're going to want
- 0:52to lift the front of the car. Something
- 0:54I suggest you do, lift both front wheels
- 0:56up. To do that in uni-body cars like
- 0:59this one, lift it from the subframe up,
- 1:01put two jack stands on the pinch welts
- 1:03right here, and we're safe to work.
- 1:06Lower the lower the car on the on the
- 1:08pinch welds, and we're safe to work. The
- 1:11reason I tell you lift both front
- 1:14brakes, you can turn the wheel like
- 1:17this, and it'll make your installation
- 1:19much easier. Now, couple things before
- 1:22you do this. If you have a car with a
- 1:25key, make sure the key is in ignition.
- 1:27Don't remove it because then the
- 1:29steering wheel will lock and you can't
- 1:30turn it. If you have a smart key car
- 1:32where it's a button, push start. Close
- 1:35the door, reach in through the open
- 1:38window, turn the the ignition on by
- 1:40pressing that start button twice, then
- 1:42shut it off. For as long as you don't
- 1:44open the driver's door, the steering
- 1:46wheel won't lock. That's how we do this.
- 1:48And just to get started with our sizes,
- 1:5199% of Toyota models. On regular
- 1:54passenger cars, you're going to have 21
- 1:56mm lug nuts. On some trucks, the five
- 2:00lug trucks will have a 22. The six lug
- 2:03trucks will have a 21. Some of the newer
- 2:05models, they won't have lug nuts. These
- 2:08will be 17 mm. So, let's get started by
- 2:10removing the
- 2:12wheel. Now, something about wheels. If
- 2:14you live in a live in a rusty area, some
- 2:17of them will be stuck like this one.
- 2:19Normally, this will just come right out.
- 2:21If that
- 2:23happens, install one one lug nut, not
- 2:26all the way, and then tap the tire, not
- 2:30the wheel, with a hammer from the back.
- 2:32It'll come off. Or if you want to do it
- 2:34the mechanic's
- 2:36way, there you go. Just be careful if
- 2:39you haven't done that before. That could
- 2:40hurt your hand.
- 2:43So, now that we got to this stage, let's
- 2:45identify our parts. This is a brake
- 2:47rotor. Let's turn the wheel. That's why
- 2:49we left we lifted both wheels and we
- 2:51left the steering wheel unlocked. This
- 2:52is the caliper. This is your bracket
- 2:55where your pads are. If you have a truck
- 2:58that has a four piston caliper, you will
- 3:01have something that looks like
- 3:03this. that is a slightly different style
- 3:06where the holder and the caliper is one
- 3:09piece that only will have two bolts to
- 3:11remove the entire caliper. We're going
- 3:13to hang it to the side and we're good.
- 3:15So, the first step you're going to do is
- 3:18remove the caliper. In the case of this
- 3:20style, which is a very popular style. If
- 3:22you have a truck, you're going to remove
- 3:23the entire caliper and hang it to the
- 3:25side. But for the trucks, you want to
- 3:26remove the pads first, pull the pins and
- 3:28whatnot, and then move on. So, to start,
- 3:31two bolts to remove the caliper. 90% of
- 3:35Toyotas will be 14 mm. Some of them will
- 3:38be 12. So if you have a basic pan tool
- 3:40set metric, you're going to have them
- 3:46already. You're just going to pull your
- 3:48caliper out, hang it up. Now we're going
- 3:50to do our caliper inspection. First
- 3:52thing you want to do, make sure there's
- 3:54no fluid leaking around here. That is
- 3:56not something to be expected, but take a
- 3:58look at it. Second thing is make sure
- 4:00this rubber boot is not torn. If this is
- 4:05torn, you have a decision to make. You
- 4:07either take a small risk. This caliper
- 4:09possibly is going to seize
- 4:11up or you want to replace the caliper or
- 4:14replace this boot. Replacing this boot
- 4:16is a little bit involved, possibly not a
- 4:18DIY job, but you want to decide
- 4:21something. But if your boot is good like
- 4:23this one, we are good. Never hang the
- 4:27caliper from the brake hose. Is it going
- 4:30to be fine? Yes. But are you running a
- 4:32high risk of stretching this hose and
- 4:34possibly shorten its life? Yes. Now, in
- 4:37the professional world, we're going to
- 4:39use like a caliper holder that just will
- 4:42hang the caliper here. Hang it on the
- 4:44spring and it's out of our way. You
- 4:47don't want to go buy a tool just for
- 4:48that coat hanger. Bend it, make it here,
- 4:51keep it in your tool chest. Now you have
- 4:53it for future jobs. Now that we got the
- 4:56caliper out of the way, move it a little
- 4:58bit out of the way here. Let's talk
- 5:00about our what where are we working with
- 5:02here. Some cars will have these clips
- 5:05that help the pads come out. Some cars
- 5:08will not have them. In this particular
- 5:10ES350, we do have them. So, let's remove
- 5:13them. You always want to replace
- 5:18these. Now that we got this out, let's
- 5:21remove our pads.
- 5:25I think the owner of this car have
- 5:27gotten their money's worth out of these
- 5:28pads because uh there's hardly anything
- 5:31left. See a little bit of uneven wear in
- 5:33these pads. This one wore a little
- 5:35faster. Don't be alarmed by that. But if
- 5:37you have one brand new pad and one pad
- 5:39that's completely worn down, we have a
- 5:42problem. Now that we've done our initial
- 5:45check on the pads, we're actually go
- 5:47back to the caliper. And this is
- 5:48important that you do this at this
- 5:50stage, not later on. We want to compress
- 5:54our piston to make sure that we don't
- 5:57have a seizing caliper because what's
- 5:59the point of doing all the brakes and
- 6:00last thing you find out we got a seizing
- 6:02caliper cuz if you do, you want to
- 6:04abort, go get yourself a caliper before
- 6:06we even get further in. To compress the
- 6:10caliper piston, we want to push it as
- 6:13the brakes pads wear down. As these wear
- 6:17down, this piston will come out more and
- 6:19more and more to compensate for that
- 6:21wear. So now when we install new pads,
- 6:24they won't fit here anymore. We want to
- 6:26push this
- 6:27in. Common misconception. Oh, you got to
- 6:30open the bleeder. You got to bleed the
- 6:31fluid when you do this. You don't,
- 6:33folks. That is very important that you
- 6:35know that to do brakes on a car, you
- 6:37don't need to open the hydraulic
- 6:38circuit. Many ways to do this. You can
- 6:41put a pad and screwdriver and push on
- 6:43it. You can use many tools. This
- 6:47particular one is a blue point. This is
- 6:48a professional grade tool, but there's a
- 6:50lot of imitations that look exactly like
- 6:52this. Cost you a few bucks. It's the
- 6:54best way to compress calipers. It's
- 6:56basically as I open, as I ratchet this,
- 6:59it's going to extend and push the piston
- 7:01in. In my opinion, this is one of the
- 7:04best tools you have. They work great on
- 7:07this style and the trucks.
- 7:10Similarly, I'm going to want to feel I'm
- 7:12putting very little effort here. Look
- 7:15how how easy I am turning this. If all
- 7:17of a sudden this jams up and doesn't
- 7:18want to move, don't just crank it with
- 7:20force because that means your piston is
- 7:22seizing up. Do something about this
- 7:24caliper. But look at this
- 7:27one. I'm hardly putting any force in it
- 7:30and
- 7:32it's it's going all the way in. You want
- 7:36to push it to its fully pushed in
- 7:40position. Just like this or maxed out.
- 7:43That is pushed in. Make sure your rubber
- 7:47boot is seated like this, not sticking
- 7:50out. If it is sticking out, you're going
- 7:53to take a screwdriver cuz it has an air
- 7:56bubble. Pull the seal at the bottom a
- 7:58little bit and then push that air out to
- 8:01position it like this. If you
- 8:03don't, this seal will get caught between
- 8:06the pad and the piston here, and that's
- 8:08how these get ripped.
- 8:10Otherwise, these are not something that
- 8:12wears out with time, folks. So, now that
- 8:14we know our caliper is good, not a
- 8:17terrible idea to to check the other
- 8:21caliper, but never disassemble brakes
- 8:23both sides, especially as a DIYer. If if
- 8:25you're not
- 8:27experienced, you may use the other size
- 8:29as reference in case you forgot. Wait,
- 8:32where does this go? Where did that go?
- 8:33So, now we have this. Let's remove our
- 8:35bracket. Many Toyota models will be 17
- 8:37mm. Some of the trucks will be 19, but
- 8:39majority of them will be 17 for the
- 8:41bracket. Well, the trucks will only have
- 8:43one, two bolts only, not four like this
- 8:54one. And that is our bracket.
- 8:58We're going to be working on this in a
- 8:59little bit, but for now, let's move to
- 9:02the last
- 9:04part. In this particular case, this
- 9:07rotor almost feels like it's part of the
- 9:10hub. This is actually just sitting here.
- 9:12Rust have seized it up a little bit.
- 9:15Many ways you can go about this. You can
- 9:17hit it with a hammer here. Bad idea cuz
- 9:20you're putting a lot of load on the
- 9:21bearing unnecessarily.
- 9:23These rotors, or at least the original
- 9:25ones, a majority of the good quality
- 9:27aftermarket ones, will have two openings
- 9:29here where you can put a thread a bolt
- 9:31in here. It'll push against the hub and
- 9:33pop the the rotor out. The size of this
- 9:36is an M8x125 for Toyota and Lexus. So,
- 9:40we're going to take our bolt, thread it
- 9:42here. Watch what happens to the rotor
- 9:44when I do
- 9:47this. There it is. If you put this bolt
- 9:51here and all of a sudden these threads
- 9:53strip, try the other one. But be gentle.
- 9:57If if one of them strips, put one here,
- 10:00put a little bit of tension, and then
- 10:02tap here on the face of the rotor with a
- 10:05hammer. That'll shake it and with the
- 10:07tension, it'll break loose. Very few
- 10:09Toyotas will have the style where you
- 10:12have two screws here. Some of the old
- 10:14old Lexuses will have that, but majority
- 10:16of them, the rotor just sits here. The
- 10:20reason for that is this is a rotor that
- 10:23centers on the hub itself,
- 10:27not with the screws. That's the
- 10:29difference here. Now that we got to this
- 10:31stage, this is where mechanics will
- 10:33disagree. A lot of
- 10:36them. They want you to clean the surface
- 10:39to make it nice and shiny and perfect.
- 10:43Folks, you do not want to get carried
- 10:45away with this because if you start
- 10:47using power tools and heavy grinders to
- 10:50clean this, you just made this surface
- 10:52wavy and it needs to be as straight as
- 10:54possible. We're not going to get carried
- 10:56away. We're going to do this moderate.
- 11:00Take a metal
- 11:02brush. Give this a good clean. Make sure
- 11:04there's no like big flakes sticking out.
- 11:16as good. That looks good to me. We're
- 11:18not trying to paint the car. We're just
- 11:19trying to make sure in case there's any
- 11:22scale here or any issues that we knock
- 11:24it out. Now, what we want to focus on is
- 11:27this ring right here cuz that's where
- 11:29the rotor will sit. You want to clean
- 11:31that very, very well.
- 11:43There we go. That is all set. Now, to
- 11:46replace the rotors or not to replace the
- 11:49rotors, let's have a quick conversation
- 11:50about
- 11:51that. If you're doing the job yourself,
- 11:54don't cut corners. That's what I'm going
- 11:57to tell you. Cuz DIY mechanics will
- 12:02always be hard on professional mechanics
- 12:03when we cut corners. And you're right.
- 12:05Don't cut corners. Do the job right. But
- 12:07then they go around do cut corners
- 12:09themselves. Don't cut corners. Do this
- 12:12right. You're either going to resurface
- 12:14the rotor, but we're not going to just
- 12:16resurface it without checking. You got
- 12:18to check the thickness. Or you're going
- 12:20to replace the rotor. Preferably, if
- 12:23you're really going to do this yourself,
- 12:26you're already saving the money of the
- 12:27labor. Do the job right. Replace the
- 12:30rotors. That's actually the best results
- 12:31overall.
- 12:34[Music]
- 12:36This is a Toyota original rotor. Here's
- 12:40something with Toyota original rotors.
- 12:42They always come cleaned. So, when they
- 12:45when they make these, there's a lot of
- 12:47machining oil and whatnot on them. Most
- 12:50aftermarket ones, they'll come with oil
- 12:51on them. Some say it is to protect them
- 12:54from rust, even though they come in a
- 12:56plastic bag. Well, I rarely take a
- 12:58Toyota rotor out of its box and it's
- 13:00rusty. So, here it is. Toyota original
- 13:02rotors. Probably one of the best rotors
- 13:04for Toyota. Some will disagree. That's
- 13:06okay. They don't need cleaning when you
- 13:09install them. They're already cleaned up
- 13:11and ready to go. That's the cool part.
- 13:13Now that we got this situated, we're
- 13:15ready to go. We're going to go back and
- 13:17prep our bracket. Let's talk about our
- 13:20bracket here. First, the brackets are in
- 13:2399% of cases they are
- 13:26side
- 13:28relevant. This says right hand side. So,
- 13:31don't take them both off and mix them
- 13:32up. If you do, they are most of them are
- 13:35clearly labeled, but some of them are
- 13:36not. Here's what we have in this
- 13:38bracket. We want to make sure that when
- 13:41we install our new pads that they
- 13:44sit
- 13:46properly, like easily. See how this one
- 13:50is really hard to sit and move?
- 13:54You don't want them too loose where
- 13:56they're kind of flopping around, but you
- 13:59don't want them too tight either. So,
- 14:02here's what we're going to do. If you
- 14:03have a rusty car, this one is not too
- 14:05rusty, a little bit. We're going to pop
- 14:07pop this part. This is called the
- 14:09fitting fitting kit. Just looks like
- 14:12this. See this spring? This just holds
- 14:15the pad in. Folks, you don't have to
- 14:18replace these if they're original.
- 14:19They're aftermarket and they're coming
- 14:20apart. You got to replace them. Always
- 14:22buy originals and keep them. If you're
- 14:24doing the first time brakes on your car,
- 14:27clean these, preserve them, just reuse
- 14:29them. They will last probably the life
- 14:31of the car in most cases. So, we're
- 14:34going to remove all four of
- 14:36them. And then we're going to take a
- 14:38look and make a judgment
- 14:46call. Do you see how this one doesn't
- 14:48have a lot of rust? This one has a
- 14:50little bit cuz this is an area you also
- 14:52want to clean right
- 14:55here. Let's look at this side. This side
- 14:58has a little bit more rust here. Not so
- 14:59bad here. So, what we want to do in this
- 15:02case, we want to clean that. Here's what
- 15:04I don't want you to do. Don't take a a
- 15:06grinder and start grinding here because
- 15:09if you make this opening deeper or
- 15:10bigger, the pad will start making noise
- 15:12every time you break. That's the first
- 15:14problem. If you're going to do it, use a
- 15:16wire wheel like this one.
- 15:19with a drill. Go in
- 15:22here with your drill. Clean it. Clean
- 15:26it. Clean it. Clean it. Do the same on
- 15:28the other side. We're done. That's step
- 15:30number one. These just use a use your
- 15:34brush. Clean them up. Just all they have
- 15:37is dust. And by the way, if you're going
- 15:39to spend hours and hours making these
- 15:41super shiny after a couple miles of
- 15:44driving and some brake dust, they look
- 15:45exactly like this. We're just making
- 15:47sure they don't have any big flakes of
- 15:49rust or anything over the top, which
- 15:51these are original. They are perfectly
- 15:53fine. So, we're going to basically do
- 15:56the same in all four of these. Let's
- 15:57talk about the pins. And this is this is
- 15:59a very important part where I see a lot
- 16:01of
- 16:03mistakes. Are we going to lubricate
- 16:05these pins every single time? You
- 16:08actually want to be careful.
- 16:09Technically, if this boot is sealed
- 16:12properly, this area has never seen
- 16:15environment outside environment. Let's
- 16:18test
- 16:20them. This one moves very freely. This
- 16:24one moves very
- 16:27freely. So, in
- 16:30reality, you're not want to do much with
- 16:33these. And this is the mistake I see all
- 16:36the time. Let's take the boot out and
- 16:40let's pull the pin. Look at this
- 16:43pin. Doesn't have rust and still have
- 16:45plenty of
- 16:47grease. If you really want to go
- 16:50overboard, you're going to wipe down
- 16:51these
- 16:57pins. Apply new grease. Now, how do you
- 17:00think the grease should be applied? Most
- 17:03will do this.
- 17:11That's That's not going anywhere, right?
- 17:14That's a mistake, folks. This is a big
- 17:17mistake. Here's what's going to happen
- 17:18here. Remember that boot that we want to
- 17:20seal. When you put all this grease in,
- 17:22this clear will pile up at the bottom
- 17:24here, and it'll always be pushing on
- 17:26your pin. The minute you drive start
- 17:28driving and this gets hot, this grease
- 17:30will start expanding, and it'll push
- 17:32your pin. You'll constantly be applying
- 17:34the brakes as you drive. Don't do this.
- 17:37We're going to put a very small amount.
- 17:40That's all you're going to put. Spread
- 17:42it
- 17:45around cuz we don't have rust here.
- 17:48We're not going to seize this pin.
- 17:50That's the whole point. So, you This is
- 17:52the moment you want to take a look at
- 17:54your boots. We don't have holes. And
- 17:56usually if you have holes here, you'll
- 17:57see rust on the pin. We're going to
- 17:59install our pin. When you install a pin,
- 18:01you see how it comes out? That's what
- 18:03I'm talking about. She don't want that
- 18:06cuz as soon as you heat up that grease,
- 18:07this is going to come up. Here's how you
- 18:09install your pin. As you install it,
- 18:12roll it cuz the pin has a flat spot that
- 18:15is supposed to let the air
- 18:17out. We roll
- 18:22it. That's it. Do you see how this one
- 18:24doesn't want to pop out on its
- 18:28own? It's going to move up a little bit
- 18:30because you're pushing that rubber, but
- 18:33it doesn't want to pop up all the way.
- 18:34If that happens, you need to do
- 18:36something about it. Don't just leave it
- 18:37like that. Now, let's do this other pin.
- 18:39Let's check
- 18:43it. This pin has a a little rubber
- 18:47insulator. This is just so this pin
- 18:50wouldn't make a lot of racket inside.
- 18:54So, same thing. We're going to give it a
- 18:56quick clean.
- 19:04A little bit of grease. Wipe it
- 19:09around. We're going to roll
- 19:18it. That's it. Now, here's where
- 19:23uh we're going to cheat a little bit.
- 19:26This is actually how not how we do
- 19:28brakes in the shop. We send them through
- 19:31a machine that does magic. So, let's
- 19:34take a look at
- 19:37[Applause]
- 19:44this. This cannon like to go overboard
- 19:48in our shop here. So, like I told you,
- 19:51these just going to give them a quick
- 19:53wipe. Now, when you install the fit kit,
- 19:56don't install it like this. This should
- 20:00be a problem cuz your rotor will be
- 20:01here. Do you see how this is sticking
- 20:02out? These are always
- 20:06facing the outside. Should be very clear
- 20:10of the rotor right here. So, I'm going
- 20:12to do the same on all of these. Give
- 20:14them a quick clean.
- 20:32Just like that. Let's talk about the
- 20:33pads real quick and the shims. Toyota
- 20:37sells two styles of
- 20:38pads. Depending on the part
- 20:41number, they're all front pads will
- 20:44always be 04465. Rear pads will be
- 20:4804466. This number though, if you see a
- 20:51here, these are called economy pads. We
- 20:54used to use them in the shop. They're
- 20:55ceramic. Sure. These are
- 20:57actually economy pads right here. If you
- 21:00look here, there's a Toyota logo. But do
- 21:03you see the shim? It's a single shim.
- 21:06That's the old style a pad. They don't
- 21:09use do this anymore because these pads
- 21:11are old. I highly recommend if you're
- 21:13doing this DIY, you're already saving
- 21:15money. Buy the factory pads. They last
- 21:17the longest. They don't make noise.
- 21:19They're just a beautiful thing. Now, you
- 21:22open the
- 21:23pads. They will come with new springs
- 21:27for the ones that have them. If your car
- 21:30did not have them, you don't have them.
- 21:32They won't come with
- 21:35it. Examine your pads because sometimes,
- 21:39in this particular case, that's not the
- 21:40case. Sometimes you'll have A and B. You
- 21:44want to match them to the old ones. Some
- 21:45A will be inner, outer, depends on the
- 21:48model. If you want any repair manual
- 21:50information specific to the car,
- 21:53techinfotoyota.com. Purchase yourself
- 21:54subscription for a day or two. Get all
- 21:57the information you need and we're good.
- 21:59Now that we have our pad, here's a
- 22:02little trick for you to just do this
- 22:06properly. If you're this is the first
- 22:08time you replace pads on the car, take
- 22:10your old pads and lay them exactly next
- 22:13to the pads, the new ones. Do you see
- 22:16how this one has an imprint of the
- 22:17piston and this one has of the caliper
- 22:19on the outside? Basically copy the same
- 22:22thing on the new pads. And now you have
- 22:25everything positioned in the right
- 22:26place. Now looking at
- 22:29these, these are not correct. Whoever
- 22:31did the brakes before, these should be
- 22:34on the same direction. So, if your pad
- 22:38has four of these, meaning one on each
- 22:41pad, not only two, you will place them
- 22:44where these will always be up. These
- 22:47help stop that pad shift. That's all
- 22:49they do. And they actually act as a wear
- 22:52indicator. Now, these were all bent out,
- 22:55so that was not good, but that's what
- 22:58they do. If you only have two, they go
- 22:59on the inner pad. Some pads like when
- 23:02you go into the trucks, this part will
- 23:04be part of the pad. You don't replace
- 23:06it. So, let's open our new shim kit,
- 23:08which I always recommend you replace the
- 23:11shims. They are antisqueal shims. They
- 23:13always get rusty and fall off and break.
- 23:16They do not come with the pads. That's
- 23:18one thing you need to know. Here's what
- 23:19we got with this particular shim. Let's
- 23:21take a look at what we got. We have four
- 23:24shims. Sometimes you'll have eight and
- 23:26you have to assemble them. The black one
- 23:28always goes toward the pad in most
- 23:30cases. But if you ideally if you have
- 23:32the original pads from the car, you can
- 23:35just kind of see where they are. In this
- 23:36case, this doesn't doesn't look
- 23:39anything. That's how aftermarket pads.
- 23:42That's how you know them. This looks
- 23:44nothing like the original where it was
- 23:45supposed to be here. Not even close.
- 23:48Sometimes the shims will be different
- 23:51for the side of the piston and the side
- 23:53in the front. So, you want to be
- 23:55watchful for that. We have four of these
- 23:58which look nothing like these. So these
- 24:01are that's that's what I'll tell you
- 24:02about the A pads how they used to be. We
- 24:05have four of these. And we have these
- 24:06two packets of grease. This is a very
- 24:09specific grease that goes between the
- 24:11pad and the shim. There's two of them,
- 24:14one for each axle. We're only going to
- 24:16use one. We're going to put a small
- 24:18amount on the
- 24:19edge. Small amount on the edge. And then
- 24:22just basically try to use the entire
- 24:25packet. Some pads will only come with
- 24:27one packet, not two, but it's a bigger
- 24:29packet that has more grease in it. In
- 24:32that case, try to evenly maybe spread
- 24:35the four pads across and spread it
- 24:39evenly. And once we've done this, we're
- 24:41basically going to spread this
- 24:44across. Well, the reason you're putting
- 24:46grease here is grease absorbs vibrations
- 24:49and it kind of quiets the pad even
- 24:53further. In this particular case, all
- 24:55these shims are exactly the same. Going
- 24:57to install them. Make sure they're
- 25:00sitting
- 25:04properly. That's all
- 25:06good. We are missing these. We're going
- 25:08to put them both. When you lay the pads
- 25:11like this, if you have four, where
- 25:14you're going to put one on each pad, put
- 25:16them both on the same direction. And
- 25:18then when you go install them in the
- 25:20car, you're going to make sure that
- 25:22these face
- 25:25up. Having said that, this is how this
- 25:28is going to sit in the
- 25:30car. Let me just position it right
- 25:33there. That's how it's going to sit in
- 25:35the car. This is up. We're going to test
- 25:38fit our pads here. We're going to take
- 25:41them, make sure they sit properly, they
- 25:44move easily.
- 25:48There we are. Look at this
- 25:51pad. Moves very easily inside. And
- 25:54that's what you want. If not, if you
- 25:57didn't, obviously with this, we
- 25:59basically cleaned it to a new cal cal
- 26:01caliper bracket here. But if not, you
- 26:04want to go back and clean it some more
- 26:05and test fit this
- 26:09one. Here we go. This one also moves
- 26:14freely. We're good. This is ready to go
- 26:17back in the car. Now, we're going to
- 26:18install our pad
- 26:22holder. You don't want this to happen.
- 26:24Just install one lug nut. I'm just too
- 26:26old and stubborn to do this.
- 26:33So, there you go. You want to make sure
- 26:36that your pads are seated against the
- 26:37rotor. There's no gaps because if there
- 26:40is, that means one of these pads is
- 26:42binding. And you notice that the clips
- 26:44are at the top. One is here, one is
- 26:47right here. That's you want to make sure
- 26:48that that is the case. Now, the torque
- 26:50spec for this will vary greatly. Depends
- 26:52on the car. In this particular case,
- 26:55it's 77. So, we're going to torque this
- 26:58one to spec. Sure, we got the
- 27:0177. If you want to find torque specs for
- 27:03your particular car,
- 27:05techinfotoy.com, that's official repair
- 27:07manual. You will get them there. Now,
- 27:10here's something. It's not really in the
- 27:12manual, but I like to do it. You put a
- 27:14little bit of grease. Just a little
- 27:23bit. Just a little bit on the face of
- 27:26the of the piston
- 27:30here. This just further helps this not
- 27:35make any noise in the future. Don't go
- 27:37overboard. We're just going to put a
- 27:38little bit. Same thing on the back of
- 27:40these. Now you can apply them on the
- 27:42pads themselves or you can apply them
- 27:44here. Just a little bit. Not going to go
- 27:49overboard. Now you're going to install
- 27:51your your
- 27:57caliper. Do you see that something is
- 27:59going south here? I want you to see it.
- 28:01What is going south
- 28:03here? Look at this hose. How twisted it
- 28:07is. Be careful of this. I did this
- 28:10intentionally for you to see
- 28:11it. This hose needs to
- 28:16be
- 28:18straight. I wanted you to see this
- 28:20before we do the next part because in
- 28:22this particular car, we have to install
- 28:24the springs for that brake hose. You
- 28:27might want to look at it before you
- 28:29remove the caliper. So, you make sure
- 28:31you put it back the same way. And if it
- 28:32was twisted, because I see this mistake
- 28:34all the time, make sure you correct it.
- 28:36Now, these can be a little bit of a pain
- 28:39to install. So, you have to hold the
- 28:41pads
- 28:42together. Install one of them cuz now if
- 28:46you let go of the pads, they're just
- 28:48going to want to jump out. So, you got
- 28:50to keep pressure on them. Install the
- 28:53the next. The second one you install
- 28:55will make them very jumpy. Sure, this is
- 28:58sitting all the way. We are good. Keep
- 29:01your hand on the pad. Bring the caliper.
- 29:04Start the caliper. And then you can let
- 29:06it go. Now the caliper will hold them
- 29:10together. That's it. I'm going to put
- 29:13our caliper bolt onto the pin. Now we're
- 29:16going to torque this bolt. This is a 25
- 29:19ft-lb in this particular car. You want
- 29:21to get a very skinny 17 mm wrench. Put
- 29:25it
- 29:26here. That's it. Now, if you don't have
- 29:28a fancy skinny wrench, you're just going
- 29:32to you can use a little vice grip or
- 29:34nipex or something that fits here. If
- 29:36you really don't have any of that, just
- 29:38take a take a regular wrench and grind
- 29:40it a little bit until it fits here. It's
- 29:42just this is such a small space. You
- 29:44want something small. Sometimes you
- 29:46don't even have to hold them. Sometimes
- 29:48they start spinning on you, but if they
- 29:50don't, then we're good. And with
- 29:55that, this corner is done. That's it.
- 29:58You basically repeat the same thing on
- 30:00the other side in the front. And you
- 30:02just replaced your front brakes. Pretty
- 30:05cool, right? That's very simple. You did
- 30:07it right. You did it safely. Use the
- 30:08correct parts. And in Toyota and Lexus,
- 30:10I'll say it one more time. Use original
- 30:13parts. I just leave you at that. Let's
- 30:15go do the rears. Now, for the rear
- 30:17brakes, you don't actually have to lift
- 30:19the whole back because we don't we can't
- 30:21turn the wheel here. You can just lift
- 30:22up a pinch weld, put your jack stand,
- 30:24lower the car on it, do one side at a
- 30:26time. No issues there. Now, before we
- 30:28get started here, I want to talk about a
- 30:30few things. This particular car has the
- 30:33parking brake, shoes, and all the
- 30:35hardware right here in the rotor hat.
- 30:38You see this plug? It's a little rubber
- 30:40plug.
- 30:43If you are missing this one, you're
- 30:45going to want to go get one. Not right
- 30:47away, but order one, get it next
- 30:50weekend, put it on. The reason is this
- 30:53is for the parking brake adjustment. You
- 30:55can put a screwdriver here and adjust
- 30:57it. If this is missing, water and all
- 30:59kinds of stuff will go in here and rot
- 31:01out your parking brake. So, you don't
- 31:03want to leave this one. I'm going to
- 31:05take this one. Actually, leave it on the
- 31:07side. We'll install it at a later time.
- 31:09Now, let's take our caliper off. same
- 31:11exact same setup in this particular car.
- 31:13Let's talk about the ones that have a
- 31:15parking brake, electronic parking brake,
- 31:17not in the
- 31:19hat. Three styles you're going to have
- 31:21that are different. You have like
- 31:22something like a third generation Prius.
- 31:24They won't have an electronic parking
- 31:26brake, but they'll have a mechanical arm
- 31:28here that a cable that pulls the
- 31:30mechanical arm. Those have a specific
- 31:33caliper tool that looks like this. You
- 31:36have to have that tool or something
- 31:37similar to it to compress that piston.
- 31:40that piston will be turned in like a
- 31:43screw, not just pushed in. The second
- 31:46style you're going to have is the
- 31:48electronic parking brake that is kind of
- 31:51you have to rewind it. That's the old
- 31:53school style. That's all that's your
- 31:55first generation. You have to do a
- 31:57specific procedure. I'll leave this
- 31:59video right here. Or use a scan tool to
- 32:00retract the parking brake motor. Then
- 32:02you can push your your piston in. The
- 32:06new style started with the 2022 Tundra.
- 32:09The Seoia, the new Seoia, the new
- 32:13LX, the motor has two bolts. You can
- 32:16actually remove the motor, do your brake
- 32:18job, then reinstall the motor, and
- 32:20that's it. Park and brake set. They made
- 32:22it much easier. So, same thing here. 90%
- 32:25of your Toyota brake in the rear. This
- 32:27style will have 14 mm bolts holding the
- 32:31caliper. Same exact thing. We're going
- 32:34to pull the caliper out.
- 32:40We're going to check our boot. Make sure
- 32:44this boot uh it's starting to
- 32:47deteriorate a little bit, but it doesn't
- 32:48actually have a full cut. It just has
- 32:50that appearance to to it. So, the little
- 32:54tool that we were
- 32:57using does not actually fit here. I'm
- 32:59going to put it in its lowest setting.
- 33:04It does not actually fit here cuz this
- 33:06is too small. So, here's what we're
- 33:08going to do instead. Get yourself some
- 33:10channel
- 33:15locks, place them across, and push the
- 33:18piston
- 33:21in. There we go. That's all the way in.
- 33:25We're going to make sure that our boot
- 33:26is seated, and it is. We don't have
- 33:29anything sticking out. We're good. Most
- 33:31cars you don't really have to hang it.
- 33:33There's a lot of places you can hang it
- 33:34from. So that's what we're going to do.
- 33:36Now we're going to remove our pad
- 33:38bracket here. Now most of them are 17s.
- 33:41Older ones will be 14. Rarely will you
- 33:44have a 17 or
- 33:48[Music]
- 33:5019. Now this rotor is also stuck. You
- 33:54see all this scale from the aluminum
- 33:56wheel. So same thing. These also have
- 33:59the openings here. Though, you want to
- 34:01be careful. We're going to
- 34:03adjust. As soon as it breaks, go back.
- 34:06Go to the other
- 34:08one. And don't go all the way. The
- 34:11reason is you may be stuck on your
- 34:13parking brake shoes. See how this one is
- 34:16stuck? It's completely stuck. So, we're
- 34:19going to find our star wheel to loosen
- 34:23up the parking brake.
- 34:26This particular one is right there.
- 34:28We're going to keep this very simple.
- 34:29It's a little wheel. I'll show it to you
- 34:31once we get the rotor
- 34:32off. You're going to turn it one
- 34:35direction. It just stopped turning. It
- 34:38locked up. You tightened it. So, they
- 34:42were going to go in the other
- 34:46direction. Loosen it some
- 34:50more. Here you
- 34:52go. Let's take a closer look.
- 34:56add it so you can see it. This is a star
- 34:59wheel right here. See this little
- 35:02star? That's what I what I was doing
- 35:04through the wheel was I was just turning
- 35:06it this way or this
- 35:11way. Basically, find out which direction
- 35:13is tightening, which is loosening. You
- 35:16want to tighten it because you don't
- 35:17want to pull on these. The reason you
- 35:20could be pulling on these is if you look
- 35:22at the old rotor, you have this little
- 35:24rust ridge right here. So, the shoes of
- 35:27the parking brake get stuck here. That's
- 35:29why you got to loosen them just a little
- 35:30bit to clear that. Don't pull it with
- 35:35force. Because if you rip these parking
- 35:37brakes, what you're going to rip is
- 35:40you're going to rip this pin right here.
- 35:44And if you do that, you got to fix that.
- 35:46Otherwise, you don't have a parking
- 35:48brake anymore. You got to remove these
- 35:49shoes temporarily until you get the
- 35:51pins. So, never pull on the rear rotor
- 35:53with force. Now, if you have the style
- 35:55with the motor or like the Prius or
- 35:57Matrix that has that arm and the cable,
- 36:00you don't have to worry about this.
- 36:01Rotor will come right out. Just do the
- 36:03same thing. Now, we're going to do the
- 36:04same thing. We're going to clean our
- 36:05hub. We're not going to get overboard
- 36:07with power tools and making divots and
- 36:09whatnot. Now, you're going to install
- 36:10your rotor. Ideally, locate these these
- 36:15bolts that pop the rotor out with the
- 36:17same thing you used. That way, in case
- 36:20this has a raise or a little bit of a
- 36:22deformation, you can use it for the same
- 36:24spot. Wouldn't push your rotor
- 36:26out. We're going to install our plug.
- 36:29This plug basically just sits here. Now,
- 36:31for the parking
- 36:33brake, you want to, if you want to
- 36:36adjust your parking brake at this point,
- 36:38you're going to tighten it. Find that
- 36:41star wheel again. Here it
- 36:45is. You're going to tighten
- 36:57it until it locks. Then back it off. a
- 37:01few
- 37:07turns. You don't want that. You don't
- 37:10want too much resistance. You want less
- 37:16resistance. That's much better cuz you
- 37:19don't want to tighten it too tight cuz
- 37:21these shoes are not meant for continu.
- 37:24They're just meant to hold the brakes to
- 37:25hold the car and the parking brake, not
- 37:27break the car. So, you don't want them
- 37:29dragging too much. That's it. This part
- 37:32is done. Now, we're going to do the same
- 37:34exact thing on the calipers. But, let's
- 37:36talk about a few things. Let's take a
- 37:38look at our pad holder here. Because if
- 37:40you notice, you have strange wear on
- 37:43these, like the the edges are feathering
- 37:45and all kinds of strange stuff. What is
- 37:48common on rear brakes to happen is these
- 37:51pads get stuck in the holder. That's one
- 37:55thing about them. You notice this one
- 37:56also has the R on it. When it comes to
- 37:59rear brakes on Toyota and Lexus, you
- 38:01really want to clean these very well.
- 38:04Don't go overboard. And remember,
- 38:06because this bracket is sits on the back
- 38:09side of the rotor, these little pins
- 38:13will actually be facing down, not up,
- 38:15not like the front. That is one thing
- 38:17you want to remember. So, let's pull
- 38:20these out. The fit kit. Same thing here.
- 38:24We're going
- 38:27to clean it up a little later
- 38:32time. In your case, you really want to
- 38:36clean this area up. Before we do that,
- 38:39we're going to clean this in the same
- 38:40vixen machine. Let's check our pins.
- 38:42Look at
- 38:44that. These are beautiful. I mean, these
- 38:46are so beautiful. I'm just going to take
- 38:48a quick peek at them. They have zero
- 38:50rust. This grease is live and well, I am
- 38:54not even going to bother. That's how you
- 38:58should think about it. If it ain't
- 39:00broke, don't fix it because there's not
- 39:02supposed to be anything that enters
- 39:04here. So, the grease you put here, if
- 39:06it's the right grease, it's going to be
- 39:07here for the life of the car basically,
- 39:10believe it or not. Even with the heat,
- 39:11it's a heat resistant grease. We're
- 39:13going to put this in the Vixing machine.
- 39:15Stick one look at it now and then to
- 39:19this.
- 39:20I love the Vixon
- 39:22machine. I'm going to clean these real
- 39:24quick off camera and then we're going to
- 39:26roll assemble the pads again in the
- 39:28back. Although they're exactly the same,
- 39:29but just so you see it, we'll assemble
- 39:31it real quick. We're done. And just like
- 39:33that, they look brand new. Also in the
- 39:35Vixon
- 39:39machine. There we go. That part is done.
- 39:43Now, these pads are also a pads. Old
- 39:47school a pads. So, we're going to dis
- 39:50discard these. These
- 39:54are 04466 rear pads. Always on Toyota.
- 39:58These are factory pads, not a pads. We
- 40:02stopped using those in the shop because
- 40:04they always squeak, especially when
- 40:07you're backing up, especially the rear
- 40:11ones. Here are the
- 40:13shims. This particular shim also comes
- 40:16with four shims.
- 40:19and
- 40:22four locks. This particular one only
- 40:25comes with one bag of grease, not two
- 40:27like the front one. So, we're going to
- 40:30use the one bag for four. So, here's
- 40:32what you do if you have four. You just
- 40:34put your four pads together. Put a
- 40:37little
- 40:38bit. It's kind of distributed evenly.
- 40:47There we go. Going to spread
- 40:51it. Put the shims on. This particular
- 40:54one, all the shims are the
- 41:00same. Now,
- 41:02these we're going to put
- 41:05them two of them this way.
- 41:15Same thing here cuz this is an inverted
- 41:17pad. There it is. Make sure these are
- 41:20seated. Yes, they are. So, in this
- 41:23particular case, this is going to go
- 41:25like this. So, this is the bottom. We
- 41:31want our wear indicator to be at the
- 41:33bottom. So, we're going to install
- 41:37it like this.
- 41:42You can do this this part where you
- 41:44install the shim on the car, but I
- 41:47usually like to sit them here just to
- 41:49make sure they they sit properly. And we
- 41:53we have a smooth moving pad. In this
- 41:56case, very smoothly moving. We don't
- 41:58have any issues. Let's install our
- 42:01bracket
- 42:02here. This is going to seem more
- 42:04difficult than it is because you all are
- 42:07standing in the way. the camera are is
- 42:10where I normally would stand. So in this
- 42:13particular case, the torque is 58. For
- 42:17your car, got to look it up. Again, make
- 42:21sure that the pads contact the rotor
- 42:23properly. There's no gap. And in this
- 42:26case, we're going to make sure our wear
- 42:28indicator sits at the bottom because
- 42:30this this caliper is in the back, not in
- 42:33the front. If it was in the front, you'd
- 42:34put it at the top.
- 42:37We're going to do the exact same thing
- 42:39here. A little bit of grease on the face
- 42:42of the
- 42:43piston and add a little bit of grease on
- 42:46the back here. Just a little bit. Going
- 42:49to make sure our hose is not
- 42:54twisted. This particular car there are
- 42:5720. Let's see if the other one turns.
- 43:00It's not turning. So, we should be good.
- 43:02You don't have to hold it with a wrench.
- 43:04Talking about this one.
- 43:09And that's it. That's one brake job
- 43:12complete. But now we got to do the most
- 43:15important. This is normal, folks, cuz
- 43:16you haven't pressed your your caliper.
- 43:20And that's what we want to do next. This
- 43:22is the most important part that you do
- 43:24after a brake job. The most important
- 43:26part that you do after you've done your
- 43:27brakes is pump the brake pedal until you
- 43:30have a firm pedal with the car off. you
- 43:32don't do that, you will not have brakes
- 43:33for the first couple applications cuz
- 43:35you need to bring that piston all the
- 43:37way in contact with the pads cuz you
- 43:39pushed it all the way out. Second thing
- 43:41you want to do, check your brake fluid.
- 43:42If you, especially if we did front to
- 43:43rear brakes, your brake fluid should be
- 43:45at the max level. If it's lower, top it
- 43:47off. If it's over, take some of that
- 43:49fluid
- 43:49off. Something about brake fluid, folks.
- 43:52I'll just mention it here because this
- 43:53is important. You should never top off
- 43:54your brake fluid. As the brakes wear
- 43:56down and this piston expands, fluid
- 43:59level will drop. But as soon as you do
- 44:01the brakes, it'll come right back up.
- 44:04That's normal. Don't top off brake
- 44:05fluid. Unless it's below minimum, don't
- 44:07top it off. Cuz when both your front and
- 44:09rear brakes are worn down, you're going
- 44:11to see it very low, close to the
- 44:13minimum, but as soon as you do them,
- 44:15it'll come right back up. That is
- 44:17normal. Folks, take your time. Do this
- 44:20right. Don't cut corners. Folks will
- 44:23make brakes seem like they're the
- 44:26easiest, insignificant thing.
- 44:28This is a safety component of the car.
- 44:31You can't stop your car. We're in a very
- 44:33dangerous situation. Do things right. If
- 44:36you're not sure about torque specs and
- 44:38whatnot, talk everything to spec. If
- 44:40you're not sure about something, ask,
- 44:42investigate, learn before you do. That's
- 44:46the number one thing here. Do the job
- 44:48right. Do the brakes like this. They
- 44:50won't make noise. They won't have
- 44:52issues. They won't rust prematurely or
- 44:54stick or seize or whatnot. Do things
- 44:57right. Use the right tools and don't cut
- 44:59corners. The whole point of you doing a
- 45:01DIY job is that you're saving on the
- 45:03labor. Labor usually is the biggest
- 45:05part. You're saving that labor.
- 45:07Compensate that by buying original
- 45:09parts. Do things right. Don't just put
- 45:11pads and not do anything with the
- 45:12rotors. Don't just use old rusty shims
- 45:15that are all deformed. Don't do that. Do
- 45:17the job right. That's your All car
- 45:21owners are very hard on on shops and
- 45:24professional mechanics. Oh, you guys cut
- 45:26corners. you guys are hacks, you guys
- 45:28are this and that, but then they turn
- 45:29around and they cut corners themselves.
- 45:32Don't do that. Do things right,
- 45:33especially it's your own car, your
- 45:34family's going to be in it. Do things
- 45:36right yourself. Folks, I hope this video
- 45:39was helpful, informative. I hope you
- 45:40learned something new. If you like it,
