0:01your sin you feel like you don't know
0:03what to do you're trapped you want to
0:05get rid of it but you don't know how and
0:08more importantly do you fear God like
0:10you're afraid of his punishment and
0:12consequences this podcast is for you we
0:15want to show you how the love of God in
0:18Christ and walking by the spirit is the
0:20way we say no to the Flesh and be
0:22restored to the father stay tuned before
0:24we jump into the podcast we want to tell
0:26you about a really important
0:27announcement we're doing a one-day
0:30conference on suffering and the return
0:32of Christ it's going to be January 18th
0:352024 in Escondido California and we're
0:38going to be doing it with abounding
0:39Grace radio with the host Chris Gordon
0:42and we're going to be hosting it at his
0:44church which is Escondido United
0:46Reformed Church we're going to be having
0:48four sessions going to start in the
0:49morning Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m.
0:52and we're going to go all the way
0:53through the evening and we're going to
0:53have a special guest with us that
0:55evening Dr Bob Godfrey who's going to be
0:58joining us in a panel as we disc discuss
1:00the importance of suffering and
1:02eschatology and why our eschatology

1:28conversations about the Christian Life
1:29from a reformed pastoral and
1:31confessional perspective Justin today
1:34our goal is to uh clear the Clutter off
1:37the gospel and reclaim the purpose of
1:39the Kingdom say last John and try our
1:41best not to make devil signs when we do
1:44this bro I was literally going to say
1:45that I was doing some hand gestures for
1:47those who are watching on the YouTubes
1:49and I'm being very careful that I don't
1:51do anything that's related to the
1:52Illuminati Somebody went through our
1:54episodes it took him a while and found
1:56out anytime that our hands may have made
1:58the demon sign or devil sign and said
2:00whatever are being controlled by a demon
2:02and we don't even know we're
2:04subconsciously supporting the things of
2:06Satan so that's been it is astonishing
2:08to me sometimes when I see things that
2:11are posted on the internet whether
2:12that's in social media platforms or even
2:14emails we receive even emails that I
2:16receive now in my general like our
2:18Church's General email account oh yeah
2:20uh on the one hand you you read them and
2:22you're like this is just lamentable and
2:28sad that so
2:30that this is happening and like on the
2:31one hand you're astonished like really
2:32we're getting this and then you think
2:34like a a real living breathing human
2:37being took the time to scour video clips
2:42or took the time to write an email and
2:45send it to us yeah and they live like
2:47across the country it's like what what
2:49are we what are we doing guys um yeah
2:51it's it's interesting well your host are
2:54John MF or just Pastor Covenant Baptist
2:57Church that was free in Asheville North
2:58Carolina if you want to send him a
3:00letter you can send it there or uh John
3:02mof at pastor of Grace reform church in
3:04Spring Hill Tennessee I had another
3:06person show up to my church recently
3:07I've been listening to thecast for three
3:08months had no clue we lived in the same
3:10town is that funny so it was fun to fun
3:12to meet them yeah uh Justin uh it's a
3:15new year for us so it's December late
3:17December or mid December for us but
3:19we're recording getting ready for the
3:20new year oh yeah and we're about to in a
3:23month be flying to uh let's see here to
3:28San Diego and this episode would be
3:29coming out probably the week of the
3:32conference so if you're hearing this on
3:35Wednesday Thursday you can still come
3:37we've live in San Diego we're gon to be
3:38doing a conference about suffering and
3:42the joy of Christ's return and it's GNA
3:46be with Dr Bob Godfrey who's going to be
3:48joining us Chris Gordon and then myself
3:51and Justin it's gonna be all day
3:52Thursday starting at 10: a.m. all the
3:54way into the evening just go to theoc

3:59correct when this episode releases Lord
4:02willing uh yeah it'll be I'm look right

4:07tomorrow yes a week from tomorrow so you

4:20the community is growing we are so
4:21thankful for you guys support um we're
4:24pushing almost a thousand people now in
4:25the app and it's a very active Safe
4:28Community and Justin people have been so
4:31kind in there we have had to do zero
4:33monitoring as far as like kicking people
4:35out or any of that kind of stuff it's
4:36been a really sweet place to just
4:37fellowship and talk about reformed
4:39theology the uh the preaching of Christ
4:43and then a collective sense of our need
4:45of Christ produces a lot of kindness and
4:48compassion and gentleness it's amazing
4:49how that works speaking of uh yeah and
4:52also speaking of like the Illuminati
4:54we've been encountering some spiritual
4:55warfare today in terms of the uh the
4:57prince of the power of the air and
4:58Technology this is no joke unreal like
5:02talk about stress um but we're going to
5:06make a hard pivot toward our subject
5:08matter for today John and I as we always
5:11do we get on the phone and talk to each
5:14other before we record and some of that
5:17is personal catch-up stuff some of
5:18that's what's going on in our churches
5:20and uh it's always good the
5:22conversations that we have and today's
5:25episode like many of the ones we record
5:27is birthed out of that conversation that
5:29pre-c important conversation that we had
5:30and we're going to talk today the title
5:33of the episode is legitimate it's not a
5:36bait and switch of any kind how to
5:37repent of
5:39sin and to get underneath it we're going
5:42to be talking a lot about fear today and
5:45how uh perfect love you know first John
5:474 perfect love drives out fear and the
5:50preaching of Christ and the heralding of
5:53Jesus for us and and all of those things
5:56drives fear away because we're assured
5:59that God God loves us and that we have
6:02his favor and that he doesn't save us
6:03reluctantly he Delights to save us and
6:06uh he is pleased with us we will be
6:08presented before his throne at the end
6:10of all of this with great joy uh and
6:12there's rejoicing in heaven over the
6:13salvation of sinful people like you John
6:16like me and like everybody listening to
6:17this podcast and so the the gospel and
6:20the person and work of Jesus is the
6:22antidote to fear but having said that
6:25let's be honest fear Reigns often in our
6:29our own hearts in our own minds it just
6:31kind of sits there sometimes it's in the
6:33background sometimes it dominates our
6:36thoughts and our feelings and fear can
6:38often reign in the church where we
6:43operate motivated by uh fear or dread uh
6:48before the Lord and we operate out of
6:51fear with respect to our relationships
6:53with each other yeah we talk and and
6:57sometimes fake things and uh put out a
7:01very fit for public consumption version
7:04of ourselves right because we're afraid
7:07that if people really knew what's going
7:09on in the recesses of my heart and mind
7:11it wouldn't go well uh How would how
7:14would people respond will I be rejected
7:17U all of that and that's true
7:19horizontally with people and it's even
7:22true in terms of how we think about our
7:24relationship with God deep down there
7:25still is that fear that something is not
7:28quite right because I know he's holy and
7:31I know I'm not and I don't want to sin
7:34the way I do and I don't even know what
7:37to think about my own struggles and
7:38surely God is is angry and so the fear
7:42peace is is prevalent and predominant in
7:45so many of our thought lives and in our
7:47interactions and here's where we're
7:49going with this fear before the Lord and
7:52fear before each other is a tremendous
7:56hindrance to repentance that's right and
7:58is actually a a
8:00significant hindrance to
8:03sanctification and so I I'll just go and
8:06launch it across the bow you know a lot
8:08of times preachers but even it's not
8:10just limited to preachers a lot of times
8:12serious-minded Christians think that
8:15fear and dread and shame are really good
8:19motivators toward Holiness and
8:23obedience and we're here today to say
8:26let's pump the brakes on that that there
8:28is the right preaching of the law to
8:31crush us all in our sin to drive us to
8:33Christ amen but when it comes to the
8:35transformation of life there's a
8:37different way and there's a better way
8:40and fear is actually not a part of this
8:42equation when it comes to repentance and
8:45when it comes to our growth in the faith
8:46and our growth in godliness so here we
8:48go that's right that's right so um you
8:53know this is the really a podcast
8:58that I would say comes from the heart of
9:01Justin and I we we believe that this is
9:04part of our confession we believe that
9:06it's at the heart of the go of the Bible
9:09in general but the heart of the gospel
9:11and we don't want us we don't want this
9:12to be a responsive podcast um it's not
9:15but in in in many ways there is a there
9:18is a heart of clarity for some of our
9:21accusers um more and more of you are
9:23listening but this is also for for many
9:26of you who are trapped and you're
9:29wondering the very question of like how
9:31do I get out of this sin like I just I
9:33went out like I went out so bad I want
9:36out and at the same time I'm
9:38terrified right that's right and Justin
9:40you and I unfortunately in the amount of
9:42years we've been in Ministry have had to
9:44walk people through this and and deal
9:47with our own Hearts our own struggles so
9:50we're speaking from Sinners to Sinners
9:53and also from pastors to to you know
9:56listeners so one of the Psalms that I've
10:00always brought me a lot of comfort
10:02especially when I feel um distant from
10:06my Lord because of my sin like I pulled
10:08away from the Lord Psalm 633 right uh
10:12because your loving kindness is better
10:14than life yeah right um those aren't
10:18throwaway words um thinking even about
10:21first John when he says that God's
10:24perfect love cast out all fear right so
10:28there's nothing more significant in all
10:30of my life than God's love for me and
10:33there's no reason that I should be
10:35afraid yet yet he is a holy God exactly
10:39yet he is a God to be feared with
10:41reverence yeah not trembling but with
10:44reverence right he's let me put it this
10:45way he is a God that demands our respect
10:48we cannot take his concerns lightly you
10:53know um there are people in this world
10:56who
10:57have um they have uh I would not call
11:00them preferences but convictions on how
11:02you should live sure and you know I'm
11:05like that's great but I have no
11:07reverence for your conviction because
11:09first of all you have no Authority in my
11:10life and number two I don't agree with
11:11you I can't say that to God he has all
11:14authority and I must agree with them
11:17right that's right so when he lays out
11:20John uh because of who I am and who you
11:22are this is how you are to live this is
11:25how you respond whether you eat or drink
11:26or whatever your hand finds to do I want
11:29you to do it in light of me and my
11:31nature I want you to do it so that at
11:33the end of it it it has the stamp of my
11:36name on it right that's what it means to
11:37do it to the glory of God it means that
11:39like God's name would be stamped on what
11:41I just did he approves of that that's a
11:43good thing out there right so but we
11:46don't live that way Justin yeah right we
11:49we struggle and really what I wanted to
11:51talk about in the beginning part of this
11:53podcast we're going to cover a lot of
11:54things but in the beginning is often why
11:57do we hide our sin
11:59right that's the thing that um you know
12:03you meet people and you can kind of tell
12:06they have this wall up and they're not
12:07going to let you get even remotely close
12:09to what's going on the inside everything
12:12is superficial you can't break down the
12:14barrier have like a real meaningful
12:16conversation uh all it is is weather in
12:18news you know or sports but there's
12:21never like the real life on life
12:23conversation um or you have a person who
12:26has been hiding a sin their entire life
12:27and finally they're get hot and there's
12:29like well now you know what now what
12:31happens sure so one of the things that
12:35I'm convinced of because scripture
12:38constantly presents this to us is that
12:41God expects us to sin from the fall of
12:45Adam to today yeah there has always been
12:49an expectation that Sinners who live in
12:52this world are going to sin the question
12:54is how do we wrestle against it and what
12:56do we do to fight the urge right and we
13:01believe that scripture makes it very
13:03clear that it is the love of God for the
13:05sinner that should draw The Sinner away
13:07from the sin and towards the father
13:09right
13:10yes and that is really hard because we
13:15as parents and as a culture like for
13:17instance Justin I don't drive the speed
13:19limit because I love my
13:23government I'm just saying I don't no I
13:27I hear you and we don't
13:29we don't submit to the government
13:31because we love the government no like
13:33this is Romans 13 where we submit not
13:36just out of fear of punishment because
13:39the government wields the power of the
13:40sword we submit out of conscience Paul
13:43says what does that mean it means we
13:45submit to government because God is the
13:47one who instituted government and we
13:48love and rever the Lord that's right
13:50that's that's what you're saying right
13:52but the but those who are not of the
13:54Lord the reason why they obey is we use
13:58consequences they don't want to fine of
14:00course they don't want to jail they
14:01don't escap of punishment it's exactly
14:03right that's the motivator and we
14:05unfortunately transfer how the
14:07government works and how I would say
14:09Humanity works we transfer that into our
14:12relationship with the father right and
14:14even into our parenting right oh of
14:16course and aren your relationships with
14:17our spouses well again I mean we
14:19typically we've said this many times and
14:21I'm going be super quick about it it's
14:22the legal framework we have where the
14:25motivators as we see them are Escape of
14:27punishment and Merit that's right that's
14:30absolutely right yep so the there's a
14:33there's a switch that has to happen and
14:35this is a really hard switch and when we
14:38put the title of this podcast in there
14:39we really mean this um I mean even Paul
14:41says this you preached through Paul uh
14:43what is it Romans 2 that the kindness of
14:46God is supposed to lead you to
14:48repentance but it didn't like that was
14:50it was a rebuking verse yeah the the
14:52forbearance of God in that situation
14:55right that's right yeah so these are all
14:58very important part parts of our
15:00relationship to our father I mean we can
15:02think of even Hebrews 4 where it talks
15:03about what kind of attitude do we have
15:06just him when we run into the presence
15:08of Our Father by the way I love it how
15:10he says this because he says in a time
15:12of need when you need mercy and Grace
15:15well Mercy is for punishment of sin and
15:17Grace is for our faith that we might
15:19receive the love and righteousness of
15:21Christ right yeah so he says you enter
15:25into my presence with these requests but
15:29you do it with boldness and the only way
15:31you would do that is if you understood
15:33the affection that your father has for
15:35you so true man and that he wants to
15:37graciously give you all these good gifts
15:40he wants to present them to you at the
15:42time of your need which means that means
15:44right after you have sinned Justin that
15:46is supposed to be how the rest of our
15:49Christian life is going to be we sin we
15:51quickly do not Harbor that sin we don't
15:54let it control us we don't Le it let it
15:56lead to worse sin right and we run and
15:59receive forgiveness of our father yeah
16:02and a few comments here I I think that
16:05one of the best things that we can do to
16:08Foster repentance in our own lives is to
16:12contemplate individually and
16:14collectively with other other Saints
16:16with other Christians in our church the
16:18love of God for us that's right I I know
16:20we have been asking this question a lot
16:23here in my own local church uh the
16:25elders we talk about it with each other
16:27but then when we talk with our members
16:28often ask how do you think God feels
16:32about
16:33you uh because that kind of gets right
16:36at the heart of the matter doesn't it
16:37yeah it does and yeah how do you think
16:40not not you know how are you doing or
16:42even what are you doing or how do you
16:45feel about the Lord but what do you
16:49think how do you think God feels about
16:51you and it produces so many good
16:55conversations man all right and it's for
16:58me I and maybe I'm unique John I don't
17:00think that I am but I'm just going to
17:02speak personally because I'm not going
17:03to try to paint with such a broad brush
17:04that somebody out there is like w it
17:06doesn't work like that for me Justin so
17:08um when I contemplate God's love and
17:11grace and mercy toward a sinner like me
17:13who does not deserve it never could
17:15never will deserve it that evokes a lot
17:19of good things in my heart and one of
17:21the things that it does is it it causes
17:24me to to feel safer in his presence it
17:29it causes me to feel closer to him uh it
17:32it does produce in me an instinct to go
17:35to him when I'm weak when I'm struggling
17:38like when my my flesh is craving things
17:41that I know are wicked uh when I'm
17:43having thoughts that I know or just bad
17:45and dishonor him or demean one of my
17:48brothers and sisters and and I'm aware
17:49of that I am more likely and more eager
17:53to run to him and to tell him here's
17:57what's going on in my mind and heart
17:58like Lord you know but like this is
18:00happening and I need your mercy I'm more
18:02inclined to do that when I think about
18:04how much he loves me and how tender he
18:06is toward me how patient he is with me
18:08so a few passages that that pop into my
18:10brain and I'll just do a couple uh so
18:12I'm thinking of like 1 Timothy 1:15 and
18:1416 where Paul talks about how you know
18:16he's the foremost of Sinners you know
18:18and and he says in verse 16 like we know
18:20the verse 15 the saying is trustworthy
18:22you know that Christ came into the world
18:24to save Sinners of whom I am the
18:25foremost we know that part pretty good
18:26but then verse 16 he expounds on that
18:28and says that effectively Christ was
18:31merciful and patient with him and the
18:33reason for that is so that we would all
18:34know that if Jesus was patient and
18:36merciful with the foremost of Sinners he
18:38will be that way with us that's right
18:40and that's really sweet but then I I
18:42continue even more like viscerally for
18:44me I continue to just go back to Luke 15
18:48the three Parables there but the
18:49prodigal son is so sweet because the the
18:53posture of the father as depicted in
18:55that Parable is beautiful because I see
18:56myself as we all do I see see myself in
18:58both the sons uh yeah because right
19:01because you the the younger son of
19:04course day at times oh gosh I mean you
19:06know yeah you're you're running off into
19:07rius living or whatever it is and and
19:09and you feel that in your flesh and the
19:11pull and the cravings and all that stuff
19:13you You' see that then I see myself and
19:16the younger son in that my instinct is
19:18to be like okay here's what I'm GNA do
19:20I've messed it up again I've botched it
19:22again and so I'm going to go back to my
19:24father and I'm going to reason with him
19:25and I'm going to say I have sinned you
19:28know against heaven and before you and
19:31let me be your slave let me work for you
19:35yeah I will prove I will I will earn it
19:38I will do what I need to do so that so
19:40that I am in your good graces and in
19:42your favor and let me let me work for
19:46pay let me work for my room and board
19:49and the father's posture is like doesn't
19:52even let the son finish you know this
19:53like he's prepared his speech and he
19:55can't even get it all out before the
19:56father says bring the robe and the ring
19:58ring and all that and put it on him
20:00because that's how the father loves us
20:02and then I see myself in the older
20:03brother because the older brother's
20:05mentality is exactly what the younger
20:07brother was doing because it's like well
20:08I'm I I work for you and all the while
20:11as I'm working to serve you I begrudge
20:13you because I I think that this is an
20:16unfair Arrangement and I'm working so
20:18hard and I'm not getting what I should
20:19and anyway I go back to this regularly
20:22to to think about the love and the grace
20:24and the mercy of the father that stops
20:26my mouth when I start to say stupid
20:28things like let me
20:30work he it's like son you clearly don't
20:33understand my love and my Mercy you know
20:35and my grace toward you so live in that
20:38I've clothed you you know and I've given
20:40you a ring your mind you got a new name
20:42and a new inheritance and nothing's
20:44going to take that away and man that
20:46does good things and it it causes me to
20:48want to talk more openly about my
20:49weakness because I know God loves me and
20:52then of course because of Christ I know
20:53where my righteousness is found and so I
20:55don't need to parade my own around
20:56anymore hey guys real quick some of you
20:58are listening to this and it's
21:00encouraging to you but you have
21:01questions so where do you go how do you
21:03interact with other people who have the
21:05same questions and share resources we
21:08have started something called the

21:23description below well this I mean it's
21:26so comforting Justin it's the only way I
21:28find the energy to keep pastoring good
21:30or and I don't mean listen I'm not being
21:32I'm not trying to be like shock do here
21:35but there are times it's the only way I
21:36find reason for life of course like Lord
21:39I am so horrible how is it you want me
21:42still here he goes because son you're
21:44not here because of your righteousness
21:46amen you're here because of my
21:47righteousness now go up and do what
21:49you're supposed to do today so uh this
21:51has been really helpful for me for years
21:54now when I first gained some clarity on
21:56this uh this is is Galatians 5:116
21:59famous passage but Justin I think we
22:01should take a moment and break it down
22:02we didn't even talked about this past
22:03we're going to do this on the Fly be fun
22:05he says but I say walk by the spirit and
22:07you will not gratify the desires of the
22:09flesh whoa that's a huge promise from
22:12Paul that's huge I'm like wow thank you
22:14Paul because that that's what I want to
22:17hear Justin I'm telling you right now
22:19I've been alive for over 40 years I have
22:21never seen the flesh do me well ever
22:24it's never done me well so for those of
22:26you who say uh do c to know me listen
22:30sin is destructive it's horrible it
22:32wrecks things man it has nothing to do
22:35with anything that is of Purity so I
22:38will go on record and say no one should
22:41ever sin it'll wck you and it'll wreck
22:44everybody who's close to you that's
22:45right so how are we going to fight our
22:47sin every single day right uh verse 17
22:50for the desires of the flesh are against
22:52the spirit and the desires of the spirit
22:54are against the flesh for these are
22:56opposed to each other to keep you you
22:58from doing the thing you want to do Amen
23:00to that I feel that come on with trer
23:02words have never been written right but
23:05if you were led by the spirit you are
23:07not under the law now the works of the
23:09flesh are evid it in these things and he
23:11names them all now Justin a lot of times
23:13when people think um when they hear walk
23:15by the spirit it's very confusing and
23:17arbitrary it's there's lots of
23:19interpretations here sure um and so it's
23:22it's really complicated and a lot of
23:25times what people turn it into is a is a
23:27law of works or spiritual disciplines oh
23:31yeah I'm happy to talk about it as soon
23:33as you I want to make sure I don't cut
23:34you off I'll I'll te it up for us the
23:38the easiest way for me to describe this
23:39because what we have to do is back up
23:42and ask what is the spirit to us what is
23:46the spirit to us and what does the
23:47spirit bring to us that's you're
23:50literally walking like for instance
23:51Justin you and I walk as married men and
23:55fathers yeah because that status us
23:58changed so the way are the way that we
24:01think the way we spend our money the way
24:02that we interact with other human beings
24:04you know we're not on the hunt none of
24:06that stuff right we we live differently
24:09therefore the spirit that dwells inside
24:11of us bringing the union of Christ to us
24:15causes us to look at this like we are
24:18the temple now of God that promise is
24:22what fights the flesh go no amen I'm
24:27going to say a few things one I am
24:29preaching through Romans and it is
24:31obvious in Romans and Paul obviously
24:32wrote Galatians as well that to walk by
24:36the spirit and not by the flesh is to
24:39receive the righteousness of Christ by
24:41faith and not seek to establish your own
24:43righteousness under the law so we start
24:46there I mean that's what you're saying
24:47we we receive a righteousness we receive
24:50an identity through our Union with
24:52Christ we have a new status by faith in
24:55Jesus Christ that the spirit has worked
24:58I mean the spirit has caused us to be
25:00born again you know to a Living Hope and
25:02to be United to the Lord Jesus Christ
25:04vitally United to him and so that is at
25:07the most basic level to receive the
25:09righteousness of Christ and walk by
25:11faith in him not seeking to establish
25:12your own righteousness under the law now
25:15I want to make some more comments about
25:17what's here in the context because we
25:19tend to because everybody's okay that's
25:20fine I mean you're talking about
25:22identity and Status praise God and we
25:24live from our identity and Status
25:26forward amen good there's more we can
25:29say though he outlines the works of the
25:31flesh that are self-evident like nobody
25:33needs us to to
25:35demonstrate that these things are bad I
25:37mean this is just what the flesh craves
25:39we all know it that's that's all he
25:40means they're evident then he talks
25:42about the fruit of the spirit and these
25:45are things that the spirit of God will
25:46work in us and of course we seek to
25:49cultivate them but isn't it interesting
25:51John where he goes right after that like
25:53you want to talk about walking in the
25:55spirit we make it all like we look
25:57inside and it's all about my devotion
26:00and my fervor and my disciplines it's
26:03very individualized that's right well he
26:05he goes right after saying that we have
26:08been crucified you know with Christ you
26:10know and our flesh has been put to death
26:12he says if we live by the spirit let us
26:14also walk by the spirit verse 25 and
26:16then he starts to talk about not being
26:18conceited not provoking not envying
26:20that's right and then he starts to talk
26:21about restoring those who are caught in
26:24transgression that's right like so those
26:26who are those spiritual should restore
26:29people who are caught in sin with a
26:31spirit of gentleness keeping watch on
26:33yourselves lest you too be tempted and
26:35fall that's right bear one another's
26:37burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ
26:39and so that's good I mean if we want to
26:41put some handles on the thing and some
26:43flesh on the bone we should start
26:44talking like that rather than talking
26:46about things that people do in their
26:47prayer closet with all due respect you
26:49know in terms walking in the spirit
26:52right like I I think there is a moment a
26:53point in time where we did another
26:55podcast on repentance um and you can go
26:57and listen to that that where you can
26:58call someone's faith into question uh I
27:01think that's for an unrepentant sinner
27:03that ised multiple times and they areen
27:06willing to repent but to say to use um
27:10hey you better stop sinning or else
27:11you're not a Christian no the fight the
27:14fact is you're fighting your sin and you
27:15hate your sin is good evidence that you
27:17are chistian question is how how do you
27:19find the strength to actually like let
27:23me put it this way how do you walk in
27:24the spirit well walking in the spirit
27:26literally means that you have the love
27:28of God poured out in your heart that's
27:31right exactly what it says right so God
27:34pours his love into your heart how do
27:35you know that because the spirit inside
27:37you is the witness of this y I'm
27:40preaching first Peter so I have internal
27:41testimony of the spirit that's right I'm
27:43preaching first Peter right now so it's
27:45on my brain of course 1 Peter 13 says
27:48blessed be the God and father of our
27:49Lord Jesus Christ according to his great
27:52Mercy he has caused us to be born again
27:55to a Living Hope through the
27:57resurrection of of Jesus Christ this is
27:58what it means to walk in the spirit to
28:00believe this to be true y to an
28:01inheritance that is imperishable
28:03undefiled and unfading kept in heaven to
28:05you who by God's power are being guarded
28:08through faith so for salvation ready to
28:11be real to the last days I love this in
28:12this you rejoice so to walk by the
28:14spirit is to rejoice in what you have
28:18and saying um my significance my love
28:22who I am and my future so my hope is all
28:25found in Christ therefore I don't have
28:27to look to the world for my identity I
28:30don't have to look for them for my
28:31satisfaction or my future as far as
28:34safety because it says God's power is
28:36keeping it so Amen to walk by the spirit
28:39is says I can say no to Pride I can say
28:42no to lust and envy and anger I can say
28:45no to all of that because I'm walking in
28:49believing the spirit lives inside of me
28:51and he is producing in me all of these
28:54benefits and if I say yes to the spirit
28:56I believe that to be true about me
28:58father I believe that he says that's
29:00what gives you the strength to say no
29:03flesh no flesh every day no flesh I mean
29:06it is a it is a faith piece it is a it's
29:09a union with Christ thing it's the
29:11testimony of the the internal testimony
29:13of the spirit that we are loved by God
29:15and we are his and we are in Christ
29:17that's what we continue to go back to
29:19it's not
29:20some you know thing to walk in the
29:22spirit is some like state that I arrive
29:25at at some point through my own effort
29:27and discipline no it is it is to
29:30effectively live like who you are now
29:32through the work that God alone has done
29:34in you and is doing through you and uh
29:38yeah it's just a different way to to
29:40talk about that it's a better way to
29:41think yeah and all of these these things
29:43that we're talking about kind of pulling
29:45us back towards repentance
29:47yep when Christ is preached when his
29:51righteousness is held out when when
29:54Christ in terms of even his his love for
29:56sinners is held out when the character
29:59of God and his love for us is held out
30:02and we we help people understand the
30:04freedom that we have and from all kinds
30:08of things the the condemnation of the
30:10law the wrath of God right the grave
30:13Satan right in his tyranny like we've
30:16been liberated from all this stuff and
30:17when we continue to be reminded of all
30:19that and then how we are reminded of our
30:22Rock Solid eternal security and how
30:25nothing is going to change the fact that
30:26we now have God's
30:28name then that does produce an
30:32environment in a church where we have a
30:35chance now to be able to live honestly
30:37and and in relationships that's what I
30:39mean husbands husbands wives 100% yeah I
30:41mean yeah of course subsets of
30:43relationships within the church but
30:44husbands and wives parents and kids
30:47friends in the church all of that uh we
30:50we have we have the footing now we have
30:53the equipment and we've built something
30:56that is safe by by God's power and
30:58through the preaching of the Gospel
30:59something has been built that is safe
31:02enough for us to begin to confess real
31:04Sin that's right and we don't have to
31:06run and hide we don't have to be ruled
31:08by shame and guilt and fear anymore
31:11because that's just what we do it's how
31:13we operate we're like Adam and Eve in
31:15the garden when God comes walking
31:17through and their Instinct because of
31:18sin is to cover themselves and run away
31:21we don't have to do that anymore that's
31:23right and with each other and certainly
31:25before the Lord and then repentance is
31:27produced right and the it's it's
31:30interesting how the Bible en entices US
31:33to um to repent like daily and often
31:38yeah you know because it's like we are
31:41going to be tempted daily we are going
31:42to fail daily and if we get out of the
31:44habit of repenting so here you heard it
31:47on theocast if you get out of the habit
31:49of repenting Justin one sin begins to
31:53harden our heart and blind us we know
31:55that to be true yeah we will then want
31:58less of the law and the gospel because
32:00the law is what convicts us and the
32:01gospel is what Comforts us we will start
32:04looking to other means for that and then
32:07thirdly Justin sin blinds us to
32:11consequence of course can I say
32:14something briefly about repentance being
32:15ongoing before you go to consequences
32:18yeah I I want to reiterate that because
32:19I I don't ever want us to be
32:21misunderstood the Christian Life is a
32:23life of repentance you heard it here the
32:25Christian Life is a life of repentance
32:27is repentance well it's a change of mind
32:29about God and His law and us and what's
32:32required how we haven't met the standard
32:33how Christ is it and now we live out of
32:36reverence for the Lord that's a change
32:37of mind but then it's also a turning
32:39it's a turning from ourselves to Christ
32:41in faith so we're doing that perpetually
32:44like repentance is not something we did
32:46once when we walked an aisle and prayed
32:48a prayer and gave our lives to Jesus or
32:50something repentance is the daily hourly
32:53moment by- moment experience of the
32:55Christian where yet again I find myself
32:57Lord I agree with you about my sin and I
33:00am siding with you against it and I am
33:02casting myself on Christ his Mercy his
33:04love and I'm coming to you and I'm
33:06asking you again here I am at the throne
33:07of grace asking for mercy in in my time
33:09of need that is the posture of
33:12repentance and it's where we live every
33:14moment every hour every day and so don't
33:17don't turn repentance into something
33:19that's scary and bad this is how we live
33:23life as sinner Saints this side of the
33:26Resurrection sorry John go ahead no and
33:28I was going to add to that we even have
33:30to repent of our repentance we don't
33:32even repent adequately I mean Luther
33:34said that yeah exactly right like and I
33:36don't want you to hear like oh you know
33:39the reason why we're repenting is that
33:41we want the joy of of receiving the ever
33:45flowing flushing of God's love upon our
33:48life like flushing this out of us and
33:50and removing the lies right well and
33:52cleansing our consciences even so that
33:54we can serve the Living God right CU I
33:56have felt my own conscience at times
33:58become hardened towards God where I
33:59allowed sins and allowed thoughts and
34:01actions and attitudes where I was like
34:04how did I get here it's because I
34:06stopped living a life of repentance I
34:07stopped trusting in the kindness and
34:10love I stopped walking in the spirit to
34:11be frank I started walking in the flesh
34:14and the flesh oh Justin it's so good at
34:16blinding us and so this last section I
34:18want to talk about's good at that too
34:20yeah well it's his lies right it's his
34:22lies he's the father of all lies so
34:24disguises himself as an angel of Light
34:25it looks really good
34:27unfortunately you and I
34:30have seen in our own personal lives and
34:32Ministries people who were blinded by
34:35sin and could not see the absolute utter
34:39destruction they walked into yeah and
34:42and and I will go on saying this right
34:44now the Bible warns us that we can and
34:48will destroy our lives and other people
34:51and can destroy churches why do you
34:53think James and Paul are so adamantly
34:57and they speak the strongest and most
34:59pointedly about how sin destroys the
35:01unity of the church and therefore the
35:03mission of the church right I love
35:05asking this question what sin do you
35:06think you can commit that doesn't affect
35:08anybody else but you oh bro it's
35:10impossible there are none yeah so I want
35:13to just say as a reminder of why we want
35:15to look at God's love look at how we
35:18walk in the spirit by God's love his
35:20mercy and Grace towards us so that we
35:21might repent daily so that we will
35:23always look and say this sin will
35:25destroy one the name of Christ the work
35:29of Christ and everyone around me I love
35:31it will end up to only bring in
35:33destruction and I cannot let it remain I
35:36need to repent word I we talk a lot
35:38about fighting
35:40sin you know in in the Christian Life in
35:43the Christian world we talk a lot about
35:44fighting sin we do acknowledge like you
35:46said it no sin is private people will
35:48give lip service to that I think
35:50sometimes deep down though people
35:51question whether that's really true like
35:53what how is a sin that I commit in
35:55private really going to affect other
35:57people it's just me that is that is also
35:59a lie from the evil one because anytime
36:02anytime we are breaking God's law it
36:04affects us in every relationship that we
36:07have whether we realize it or not and so
36:10we should talk more about fighting
36:12against Sin from the perspective of I
36:15love if I'm married I love my spouse if
36:17I have kids I love my kids I love my
36:20local church I love my brothers and
36:22sisters I don't want to bring reproach
36:24upon the cause of Christ or cause
36:25division in this local body like I don't
36:27want to hurt other
36:29people whom I care for and whom the Lord
36:33loves like I don't want to I don't want
36:34to hurt them and I don't want to destroy
36:36them and so that is a motivator for me
36:39in fighting against my flesh and
36:40fighting against sin we should talk
36:42about Holiness more corporately like
36:44that uh because it is obvious like you
36:48said the scripture is very plain that we
36:50will reap what we seow so I think maybe
36:51as a a final word here not not to be
36:54discouraging for people like rest in the
36:57fact that God's love never goes away he
36:59never takes his name back from us Christ
37:01has us and will keep us into eternity
37:04and there are real Earthly consequences
37:06for sin I mean let this be a deterrent
37:09right I mean this is a use of the law
37:10right that God tells us what our sins
37:13deserve and it's very clear that if we
37:15don't live in accord with his law we can
37:18expect bad things to happen now a lot of
37:21times because God is so gracious he
37:22keeps us from having to Bear the full
37:24weight of the consequences of our
37:25actions but then in some cases we bear a
37:29lot of weight in terms of the
37:31consequence like I did something that
37:33affects my life on Earth and it's
37:34affected everybody that's connected to
37:36me and I've got to live with that well
37:39again what do you do with it you
37:40continue to take it to the Lord there's
37:42mercy and Grace in Christ all day long
37:45and then you you deal with some of the
37:48Fallout uh in this life and realize that
37:51yeah because God won't be mocked there
37:55there may be ways that my life looks
37:56different moving forward maybe that
37:57relationship won't be restored maybe I
38:00can't even remain in the same local
38:01church because of how I've sinned
38:03against some of my brothers and sisters
38:04and and so I've got to go to a different
38:06gospel preaching Church down the road
38:08and that hurts me but uh but the Lord
38:10has me and may this be 5.5 in our
38:13confession may this be for me uh a
38:17continual reminder of my need of Christ
38:19may it humble me and may I never be
38:21deceived into thinking that I
38:22established my own righteousness may
38:24this be a deterrent for me from future
38:26occasions and opportunity for sin may I
38:28not go down the same road again because
38:30this was bad the Lord has good and holy
38:32purposes even when we fall on our faes
38:34and he we will not Psalm 37:24 we will
38:37not be cast headlong because the Lord
38:40upholds our hand that would be my
38:42encouragement to somebody out there
38:43who's thinking man I have blown it and
38:44wrecked my life the Lord has you you may
38:47bear consequences this side of the
38:48Resurrection but all will be well in the
38:50end and may you be continually humbled
38:53and cast yourself on Christ whenever
38:54your sin does come to your mind and be
38:56comforted by the love of God for you
38:59yeah my daughter asked me that recently
39:01she goes she asked well Dad when someone
39:03blows up their life like can they be
39:05restored and I said well yes they will
39:09always be restored in their relationship
39:10with the father and for all of eternity
39:12but in this life things might look a bit
39:14different I think that they can regain
39:16trust over time but it's going to hurt
39:19and affect the kingdom in ways that you
39:21know this is why we're called Justin um
39:24I've learned never to think about my sin
39:27and light of Eternity because I know
39:29what I have in Christ but when I think
39:31about God's name here on this Earth and
39:34God's name in the mouth of my wife and
39:35children yeah I don't want that to be
39:37tainted with my life as much as I can
39:39and as much strength as God gives me man
39:42I I just really there is a sense where I
39:46I do I am afraid of being ineffective
39:50and unfruitful like first P or second
39:52Peter says and I think that's a healthy
39:54fear the fear of consequence
39:57um and so what helps me not hide my sin
40:00and and confess it to one another and
40:02stay strong in the Lord is looking at
40:04his love for me not being afraid of him
40:07and there's so many people who are
40:08afraid of the Lord don't be afraid of
40:10your father that's the one that's the
40:12one shot You' got right at making this
40:15happen is his love for you it's supposed
40:18to cast out all fear yeah right so that
40:21that hopefully this was encouraging to
40:23you um if you are trapped in sin would
40:26would you please trust your brothers
40:27here as we present to you the hope of
40:29God let God Walk you out of this find a
40:33brother find a sister confess it to them
40:36let them restore you with the gospel
40:38whatever damage it may bring you will I
40:41promise you this continuing to lie only
40:44casts more rope in the net that's
40:47dragging you down cut that self thing
40:50free stop lying and let God begin to
40:53restore you because I promise you the
40:55restoration is far far sweeter than
40:57whatever Pride you're trying to hold on
40:59to yeah come come guilty ones weighed
41:02down with sin hide away in the love of
41:05Jesus right that that's the call is he's
41:08taken your guilt and your shame let go
41:10of it confess it bring it into the light
41:13and be healed right confess your sins
41:15one to another that we may be healed
41:17that's what we're we're called to and
41:19it's so liberating may we know the
41:22freedom that Christ has won for us amen
