How To Never Get Angry Again | Miyamoto Musashi — Transcript

- 0:00What has ever been gained by rage?
- 0:02A sword swung in anger cuts nothing but
- 0:05air.
- 0:06The man who moves in fury loses sight of
- 0:09rhythm, and rhythm is life itself.
- 0:13Musashi knew this truth. He faced death
- 0:16with an unshaken gaze, while others
- 0:18burned in their own fires.
- 0:21Rage blinds the warrior to what lies
- 0:23before him.
- 0:25The enemy vanishes behind the smoke of
- 0:27pride, and in that blindness, defeat
- 0:30begins.
- 0:31The man who cannot see beyond his
- 0:33emotion cannot see the path before him.
- 0:36Anger promises power, but delivers
- 0:39confusion.
- 0:40It makes the hand heavy and the heart
- 0:42wild.
- 0:44Musashi wrote,
- 0:45"Do not act following customary beliefs.
- 0:49Custom teaches you to lash out, to
- 0:51strike when wounded.
- 0:53But the way teaches restraint.
- 0:55The warrior learns to let the fire burn
- 0:58itself out, to stand still until the
- 1:00smoke clears.
- 1:02When the storm passes, only the calm
- 1:05blade remains."
- 1:07He learned this in solitude, on mountain
- 1:10paths veiled in mist, carrying silence
- 1:12as armor.
- 1:14He found that emotions are traps, the
- 1:16bait of the weak.
- 1:18To strike from anger is to fight in
- 1:20chains. To respond with silence is to
- 1:23fight in freedom.
- 1:25The path to stillness begins where pride
- 1:28dies. Pride fuels the flame. Humility
- 1:31extinguishes it.
- 1:33To release anger is not to be passive.
- 1:36It is to be untouchable.
- 1:38The unshaken spirit moves unseen,
- 1:41unprovoked, unreadable.
- 1:43Anger is not power. It is weakness
- 1:46pretending to be strength.
- 1:48When you see this truth, you begin to
- 1:50master yourself.
- 1:53When you let the flame fade,
- 1:55you begin to see clearly.
- 1:57The way does not call for the loudest
- 1:59heart.
- 2:00It calls for the stillest one.
- 2:04In combat, fury reveals the man.
- 2:07It makes his rhythm easy to read, his
- 2:10strikes predictable.
- 2:12The calm opponent simply waits for the
- 2:14moment the fire overreaches and ends it.
- 2:19Musashi wrote in the Book of Five Rings,
- 2:22"Perceive that which cannot be seen with
- 2:24the eye."
- 2:26When anger clouds the spirit, you see
- 2:28only red.
- 2:30When stillness governs, you see rhythm
- 2:32itself, the breath between movements,
- 2:35the hesitation before a strike.
- 2:38To see without the eye is to sense the
- 2:40pattern of all things.
- 2:42The proud man burns quickly.
- 2:45Insult cuts him and he bleeds ego.
- 2:48The humble warrior endures the same
- 2:50insult and smiles,
- 2:52for he knows his worth does not come
- 2:54from words.
- 2:56Resentment and complaint are appropriate
- 2:58neither for oneself nor others.
- 3:02Every grievance is a chain.
- 3:05To let go is to be light. Musashi's
- 3:08strength was not in the blade, but in
- 3:10his silence.
- 3:12When the enemy shouted, he did not
- 3:14answer. When they taunted, he did not
- 3:16flinch.
- 3:17Silence itself became a weapon.
- 3:20In that stillness, he could feel the
- 3:22rhythm others missed.
- 3:24Rage deafens. Stillness hears
- 3:26everything.
- 3:28Pride says,
- 3:29"I must prove myself."
- 3:31The way says, "There is nothing to
- 3:33prove."
- 3:35The calm blade cuts deeper than the wild
- 3:37swing.
- 3:38The silent heart endures longer than the
- 3:40loud one.
- 3:42To be calm in battle is to already have
- 3:44won.
- 3:47Discipline is the sword that cuts
- 3:48through fury, not suppression, but
- 3:51mastery. Suppression hides anger,
- 3:54discipline transforms it.
- 3:57Each morning of practice, each strike in
- 3:59solitude, each breath in silence,
- 4:02Musashi forged clarity where others
- 4:05found fire.
- 4:06Generally speaking, the way of the
- 4:08warrior is resolute acceptance of death.
- 4:12Why does this matter? Because anger is
- 4:15born of fear, fear of loss, of
- 4:17humiliation, of death itself. The man
- 4:21who accepts death fears nothing. And a
- 4:24man without fear cannot be provoked.
- 4:27Musashi trained his spirit as he trained
- 4:29his sword. Through repetition, his
- 4:32emotions lost their grip.
- 4:34There is no anger in rhythm, only focus.
- 4:38Each motion became meditation. Each
- 4:40duel, a mirror of his own mind.
- 4:44He taught,
- 4:45"Do not let the enemy see your spirit.
- 4:48Anger is spirit revealed, weakness
- 4:50displayed. To master anger is to master
- 4:53concealment. The enemy sees only calm,
- 4:57beneath it, perfect readiness.
- 5:00The disciplined warrior does not react,
- 5:02he responds. Not with haste, but with
- 5:05precision. Not with pride, but with
- 5:08purpose. The hand moves when the heart
- 5:11is still. This is not coldness, it is
- 5:14control.
- 5:15When insult strikes, let it pass. When
- 5:18chaos calls, remain silent.
- 5:21You are the mountain, and storms are
- 5:23nothing but passing clouds.
- 5:27Musashi's solitude was his temple. He
- 5:29walked alone, not out of hatred, but to
- 5:32guard his peace. He owned little,
- 5:35expected less, and thus could not be
- 5:38broken.
- 5:39He was free, not because the world was
- 5:41kind, but because he no longer required
- 5:44it to be. He wrote, "Do not, under any
- 5:48circumstances, depend on a partial
- 5:50feeling.
- 5:52Anger is always partial, a fragment of
- 5:55truth wrapped in illusion.
- 5:57The whole man sees beyond it. The
- 5:59fractured man becomes it. The world will
- 6:02insult you. It will betray you. It will
- 6:05deny your worth.
- 6:07But, if your blade trembles, you have
- 6:09already surrendered.
- 6:11Stand as stone. Breathe as wind. Move as
- 6:15water.
- 6:16Let the world's fire burn. It cannot
- 6:18touch what does not burn back.
- 6:21Resentment and complaint are appropriate
- 6:23neither for oneself nor others.
- 6:26When these die, anger has nowhere to
- 6:28live.
- 6:29When anger dies, you become untouchable.
- 6:33The truth is simple. Anger is noise.
- 6:36Mastery is silence.
- 6:39The warrior's victory is not over his
- 6:41enemies, but over himself.
- 6:43To never be moved by anger is to stand
- 6:46beyond defeat.
- 6:47Walk as Musashi did, a blade drawn in
- 6:50silence, a mountain untouched by storms,
- 6:54a spirit that does not bend.
