- 0:06Slipping a punch, rolling a punch. When
- 0:08should you slip a punch? When should you
- 0:09roll a punch? Which punch should you be
- 0:11slipping? Which punch should you be
- 0:13rolling? And how can you come back with
- 0:15a punch of your own once you've slipped
- 0:17the punch or once you've rolled a punch?
- 0:19On this video, I'm going to be going all
- 0:21over that and I'm going to give you a
- 0:22drill that you can do at home. But all
- 0:25you need is a boxing glove, which will
- 0:27really help improve your reactions and
- 0:30your head movement. And if you don't
- 0:31know who I am, my name is Tony Jeffries.
- 0:32I'm an Olympic medalist boxer, former
- 0:35European champion. And on this YouTube
- 0:37channel, I give you everything boxing.
- 0:39So make sure you subscribe for more
- 0:41videos like this. So firstly, which
- 0:44punch should we be slipping? Well, you
- 0:46should only be slipping out the way of
- 0:47straight punches. If I'm in my boxing
- 0:49stance here and the center line is in
- 0:52between my feet, I want to slip my head
- 0:55off that line. Now, when I'm talking
- 0:57about that center line, this is the line
- 0:59if someone throws a punch at you, it
- 1:00should be coming straight down that
- 1:02line, right? So we need to slip our head
- 1:05off there. And again, if it's a jab, you
- 1:07want to be slipping to your right. If it
- 1:10was a right hand, you want to be
- 1:11slipping to your left. If someone's
- 1:13throwing a hook at me, coming from this
- 1:15side, that's when I would roll to that
- 1:17side, rolling underneath it. Or if the
- 1:20hook was coming from this side, so I'll
- 1:21be rolling under that hook right there.
- 1:24And again, when I'm rolling, my head is
- 1:26coming off that line and then coming
- 1:28back onto it. Off that line and then
- 1:30back onto it. I would never want to try
- 1:33and slip a hook because if you think the
- 1:36punch was coming from this side and I
- 1:38slip into it,
- 1:40that's like a head-on collision and I'm
- 1:42making that hook twice as hard because
- 1:44I'm moving into it. So we're slipping on
- 1:46the straight punches, we're rolling out
- 1:48the way of the hooks. Now before I give
- 1:50you this great drill that you can do, I
- 1:52just want to talk about the counter
- 1:53punches and the exact way that you
- 1:55should be slipping and rolling. So,
- 1:59let's say someone threw a jab at me and
- 2:00I have slipped. What I'm doing, I'm
- 2:02transferring the weight to my back foot
- 2:04and what that's doing, it's loading up
- 2:05my back hand and I can follow back with
- 2:08my right hand. So, if I'm slipping to my
- 2:10right, I'm coming back with my right. If
- 2:11I would be to slip into my left, I would
- 2:13put the weight to my front leg and then
- 2:15I can come back with my left hand here.
- 2:17I'm loading that punch up.
- 2:19And it goes the same if you were
- 2:21rolling. If I was rolling to my right, I
- 2:23would come back with my right hand. And
- 2:24if I was rolling to my left, I would
- 2:26come back with my left hook. So, again,
- 2:28I'm slipping out the way of straight
- 2:29punches. If I slip to my right, I come
- 2:31back with my right hand. If I slip to my
- 2:33left, I come back with my left hand. I'm
- 2:35rolling out the way of hooks. If I'm
- 2:37rolling to my right, I'm coming back
- 2:38with my right hand. If I'm rolling to my
- 2:40left, I'm coming back with my left hand.
- 2:43Pretty simple, right?
- 2:44Well, the more that you do this and
- 2:46practice it in the mirror, on the heavy
- 2:48bag, if you're in the gym in shadow
- 2:50boxing, or you're going to be doing the
- 2:52drill I'm about to give you at home,
- 2:54always think about that for a rule of
- 2:56thumb. Now, this drill, all I you need
- 2:59is a boxing glove to be able to do it
- 3:02and as well, a hand wrap or some string
- 3:05to be tying it up because what we're
- 3:06going to do, we're going to be tying
- 3:07this glove up to something high. Tie my
- 3:10hand wrap to it and then I'm going to
- 3:13Oh, no.
- 3:15Wait a minute.
- 3:18Yes, look at that. I am hanging it up.
- 3:20Now, I guess you haven't got a pole like
- 3:22this in your house, but you've got
- 3:24something like a door frame or something
- 3:26else where you can hang it. Now, what
- 3:28I'm going to do, I'm going to bring this
- 3:30to my head height right here because
- 3:32this is the thing that I'm going to be
- 3:34slipping out the way of. If it's too
- 3:36high, it's not going to work. If it's
- 3:38too low, it's going to make things very,
- 3:40very difficult. So, I want to keep this
- 3:43my head height.
- 3:46I've tied it up.
- 3:49I'm going to stuff this wrap inside of
- 3:51here, like that.
- 3:54And right now, I've got my very own slip
- 3:56ball like Mike Tyson has got right here.
- 3:59And now we're about to do it as fast as
- 4:01Mike Tyson as well. Not really.
- 4:04So, what we're going to do with this?
- 4:06So, once it's here, we can swing it in
- 4:08front and then it'll hit you in the face
- 4:10like that if you don't slip out of the
- 4:11way of it. So, when you are swinging
- 4:13this, it's going forwards and backwards
- 4:15down that center line that I've not sure
- 4:17you about, like that, because that's
- 4:19where the punch is going to be coming.
- 4:21So, I'm going to stand directly under
- 4:22this, then I'm going to swing it, and
- 4:24then when it's coming back, I'm going to
- 4:25slip to my right, and then I'm going to
- 4:27slip to my left, and then we'll go from
- 4:29there. So, it's in front of me, swing it
- 4:31out, slip to my right, slip to my left,
- 4:34back to the center. Now, there we've
- 4:35just done a double slip. Again, throw it
- 4:38out, slip, slip, back to the center.
- 4:41Out, slip, slip, back to the center.
- 4:43I'll show you from this side now. So,
- 4:45it's swinging up, slip, slip, back to
- 4:47the center.
- 4:49As you can see, I'm transferring that
- 4:50weight, so I'm loading up that counter
- 4:52punch. Now, once you get used to doing
- 4:54that, then we can start advancing it a
- 4:57little bit more. We can start adding on
- 4:58the counter punches. So, I'll swing it,
- 5:00I've done a double slip, and I'll throw
- 5:02a counter punch. I've slipped, slipped,
- 5:04counter punch. Remember, whatever
- 5:05direction I'm slipping to, that's the
- 5:06punch that I'm coming back to.
- 5:08As you can see, I'm slipping out of the
- 5:10way of it, getting my head off that
- 5:11line, and then coming back with the
- 5:12counter punch. If I'm slipping to my
- 5:14right, I'm throwing that right hand. If
- 5:15I'm slipping to my left, I'm throwing
- 5:17that left hand.
- 5:19Now, when you get comfortable doing
- 5:20that, we can advance this even more. We
- 5:23can get in our box of bounce, if you
- 5:26like. Then when we move on this, we can
- 5:27do it like a punch. So, I'm here, I'm
- 5:29moving like a punch. I'm slipping, I'm
- 5:31slipping. I'm moving around, I can move
- 5:33all angles here.
- 5:35It doesn't matter which angle I'm
- 5:36moving.
- 5:39I just don't want that that to hit me.
- 5:41I'm putting you with my hands to choose
- 5:42the touch.
- 5:43Moving, moving, moving. Swing, swing,
- 5:45slip, slip.
- 5:47From here, pivoting around.
- 5:55Then I can start adding in counter
- 5:57punches. It's moving. Ba ba Ba ba
- 6:01Ba
- 6:03Ba ba ba
- 6:05Ba ba
- 6:08Ba ba ba
