  1. 0:00what's up and welcome to guiding bolts
  2. 0:02today we're going to learn how to make a
  3. 0:05half circle cloak today's tutorial is so
  4. 0:08simple and easy it doesn't even require
  5. 0:11sewing let's get started
  6. 0:13the first thing we want to discuss is
  7. 0:16the fabric so if we're keeping this
  8. 0:18project super simple and easy we want to
  9. 0:21pick a fabric type or material that
  10. 0:23doesn't fray this means that we don't
  11. 0:26have to sew or hem the edges to prevent
  12. 0:28the fabric from unraveling today i've
  13. 0:31chosen a fleece this is a great material
  14. 0:34that won't fray and it's also nice and
  15. 0:37soft and cozy for a cloak
  16. 0:40the other thing you want to take into
  17. 0:41consideration is the total width of the
  18. 0:44fabric a lot of fabrics will come in
  19. 0:47common widths of 56 inches 58 inches or
  20. 0:5160 inches and this is important because
  21. 0:54the total width will affect how long
  22. 0:57your fabric can go
  23. 0:58so fabric will be on the bolt
  24. 1:01and then you unravel it for your length
  25. 1:03most bolts will say right on the label
  26. 1:06how wide the fabric is
  27. 1:09but this fabric here once you unfold it
  28. 1:11all the way out
  29. 1:13is a total of 60 inches
  30. 1:16so when purchasing my fabric i want to
  31. 1:19purchase a length of fabric that's twice
  32. 1:23the width
  33. 1:24so this fabric is 60 inches wide i want
  34. 1:27to purchase 120 inches in length and
  35. 1:30that will give us just enough fabric to
  36. 1:33make the cloak with the hood without a
  37. 1:35lot of excess scrap allowing us to be
  38. 1:38good stewards of our money
  39. 1:41once you have your fabric at home lay it
  40. 1:43out on a flat surface and fold it in
  41. 1:45half so you have a two layers of fabric
  42. 1:49that are in a square
  43. 1:50so again if our fabric was 60 inches
  44. 1:53wide we purchased 120 inches in length
  45. 1:56and we'd fold that over to have a 60 by
  46. 1:5960 square
  47. 2:01now today's cloak i'm actually scaling
  48. 2:03down for my 12 year old stepson
  49. 2:06and to measure for his size i measured
  50. 2:08collarbone to ankle bone because he
  51. 2:10wanted a full length cloak which was 49
  52. 2:13inches
  53. 2:14and then i added seven inches to account
  54. 2:18for the hood length that will be cutting
  55. 2:20off in the corner so
  56. 2:23my length here is going to be measured
  57. 2:24out for 56 inches instead of doing the
  58. 2:27full 60 inches
  59. 2:30our next step is to trace out a radius
  60. 2:33of our circle we'll be drawing a quarter
  61. 2:36circle and then of course once you
  62. 2:38unfold the fabric that turns into a half
  63. 2:40circle it helps to have a friend or
  64. 2:43heavy object to pin down your measuring
  65. 2:46tape in one corner to help you trace
  66. 2:48this out
  67. 2:49if you have a piece of chalk i'd
  68. 2:51recommend using that as your tracing
  69. 2:53implement that will be easier to wash
  70. 2:55out of the fabric i will be using a
  71. 2:58marker so it's hopefully easier for you
  72. 3:00guys to see what i'm doing but when i go
  73. 3:02to cut out my fabric i'm going to make
  74. 3:04sure that i cut on the inside of that
  75. 3:06line so i leave no marker behind on my
  76. 3:09cloak
  77. 3:10i have my tape measure pinned in the
  78. 3:12corner by a table so i'm going to come
  79. 3:14out to 56 inches i'm actually going to
  80. 3:17go just a tad bit further out so that i
  81. 3:20have room to cut off my marker tracing
  82. 3:23without leaving a path
  83. 3:25[Applause]
  84. 3:33next we want to cut out the hole for our
  85. 3:36neckline so we're going to come up to
  86. 3:38the top corner where we were pinned down
  87. 3:40before and we're going to trace at about
  88. 3:43six and a half inches if you think you
  89. 3:46want a larger neck hole go ahead and go
  90. 3:49out to maybe seven seven and a half but
  91. 3:51six and a half inches is a good standard
  92. 3:54size for most average necks
  93. 3:57once our lines are drawn it's time to
  94. 3:59cut out our cloak if you use marker like
  95. 4:02me make sure that you cut on the inside
  96. 4:04of the marker line so that you're
  97. 4:06trimming that marker mark away
  98. 4:09and if you have a salvage or raw edge on
  99. 4:12your fabric like i do here you can go
  100. 4:15ahead and trim all the way down the
  101. 4:17length of that to get rid of that
  102. 4:19now our piece on the bottom
  103. 4:21this is what we're going to use for our
  104. 4:24hood i have already cut off that raw
  105. 4:27salvage edge
  106. 4:28so to orientate yourself over here this
  107. 4:31is the base of the hood so this is where
  108. 4:34it's going to attach to the cloak and
  109. 4:36the cloak would go out that direction
  110. 4:39this edge right here is where your face
  111. 4:41is so you'll be looking out in this way
  112. 4:44and then the back of the hood would be
  113. 4:46over here and this can be a rounded
  114. 4:48shape a pointed shape whatever you wish
  115. 4:51for length measurements here we want the
  116. 4:54base of the hood where we're attaching
  117. 4:56it to our cloak to be roughly the same
  118. 4:59size is that corner we cut out and that
  119. 5:03in the top of our cloak so we're going
  120. 5:05to cut about
  121. 5:0612 inches here
  122. 5:08for the height or depth of the cloak we
  123. 5:11want a little bit of volume to this
  124. 5:14there's nothing worse than a hood that's
  125. 5:15too small and too tight so i'm going to
  126. 5:17measure out 22 inches here
  127. 5:20and then my stepson has requested a
  128. 5:22pointed hood so i will sketch that shape
  129. 5:25out for the back of the hood
  130. 5:37now that we have our hood cut out it's
  131. 5:39time to either sew or glue the two
  132. 5:42pieces of fabric together
  133. 5:44remember
  134. 5:45the front part of the hood where the
  135. 5:47face looks out in the bottom of the hood
  136. 5:50where we're attaching it to the cloak
  137. 5:52we're going to leave untouched for now
  138. 5:54we're going to be sewing or gluing the
  139. 5:57back side of the hood and the top side
  140. 6:00of the hood
  141. 6:01identify which sides of your fabric are
  142. 6:04the right sides and the wrong sides so
  143. 6:07the right side of the fabric is the
  144. 6:09outside facing fabric well the wrong
  145. 6:13side of the fabric is the side that you
  146. 6:15want facing inward
  147. 6:17what we're going to do is we're going to
  148. 6:19take the wrong sides of the fabric
  149. 6:27have them facing
  150. 6:30outward
  151. 6:31and we want the right sides of the
  152. 6:33fabric
  153. 6:34facing inward or touching each other
  154. 6:43so now i'm going to be sewing the back
  155. 6:46and the top of the hood now if you're
  156. 6:48going to glue this i'll throw a link
  157. 6:50down below and
  158. 6:52in the description to a glue that's good
  159. 6:54for using with felt
  160. 6:56the trick with gluing felt is that
  161. 6:58you're going to want to lay a line of
  162. 7:00glue about a quarter inch from the edge
  163. 7:03and then press the edges together the
  164. 7:06trick is you want that glue to work
  165. 7:08itself into the fibers and then you also
  166. 7:11have to give it enough time for it to
  167. 7:13properly dry i would recommend taking
  168. 7:16some large paper clips or even those
  169. 7:19clips that you stick on a chip bag and
  170. 7:21kind of clamping your fabric down to
  171. 7:24help hold it in place as it dries
  172. 7:27i'll go get my sewing machine out and
  173. 7:29we'll do a simple straight stitch
  174. 7:31along the top and back edges
  175. 7:47[Music]
  176. 8:09[Music]
  177. 8:19after your hood is sewn or glued flip it
  178. 8:23right side out so that the correct side
  179. 8:26of the fabric is on the outside and your
  180. 8:28seam is on the inside we're now going to
  181. 8:31attach the hood to the cloak so again
  182. 8:34you want to have the
  183. 8:36wrong sides facing out so that's the
  184. 8:40side down on the bottom here
  185. 8:42and
  186. 8:43the side of the hood here facing up and
  187. 8:46then my right sides of the fabric which
  188. 8:48is this side of the hood and this side
  189. 8:50of the cloak are touching each other
  190. 8:52and then i've gone ahead and pinned them
  191. 8:54in place and we're going to sew this
  192. 8:56shut with a straight stitch again or you
  193. 8:59can also use the glue method
  194. 9:05[Music]
  195. 9:18[Applause]
  196. 9:29she
  197. 9:31[Music]
  198. 9:42final step for our cloak is attaching a
  199. 9:44fastener you could get some ribbon and
  200. 9:47then sew or glue it on kind of the
  201. 9:49inside areas of your cloak here
  202. 9:52or if we're keeping this simple go and
  203. 9:55order a cloak fastener
  204. 9:58simple little clasp
  205. 10:00no sewing or glue required
  206. 10:02just a little claw clamp that clips
  207. 10:04right on both sides
  208. 10:06easy peasy
  209. 10:08that does it for today's tutorial if you
