Full transcript
- 0:00Hi guys. Welcome and welcome back to my
- 0:02channel. If you're facing [music] stress
- 0:05while juggling school at the same time,
- 0:08it can definitely feel like a challenge.
- 0:11My challenge for you is to stay until
- 0:13the end of this video with hopes that
- 0:16you will completely [music]
- 0:18rewire your thoughts around approaching
- 0:21studies while coping with stress at the
- 0:23same time
- 0:24>> [music]
- 0:25>> and finding healthy habits and practices
- 0:28to incorporate
- 0:30into your daily routines, practices,
- 0:33>> [music]
- 0:33>> in the most beneficial way to help
- 0:36supplement your well-being and help you
- 0:39focus better on your studies.
- 0:42I have multiple reasons to be making
- 0:44this video.
- 0:45>> [music]
- 0:45>> One, it was suggested by many of you and
- 0:48two, this was motivation by myself
- 0:51because I have personally been going
- 0:53through a lot of
- 0:55moving around and juggling coursework
- 0:58with working full-time while managing
- 1:00two YouTube channels.
- 1:02So, as somebody who has learned how to
- 1:04manage her stress while managing
- 1:08studying at the same time, I really feel
- 1:10like I have the expertise [music] and
- 1:12experience to be explaining this to you
- 1:14guys.
- 1:15So,
- 1:17unlike most of my videos, I have
- 1:19structured [music] this one out a little
- 1:20bit
- 1:21just because my schedule is about to
- 1:24become a little bit busier because I'm
- 1:25taking 15 [music] credits this semester
- 1:29for the summer to accelerate my
- 1:31>> [music]
- 1:31>> um
- 1:32degree pathway that I'm doing right now.
- 1:35I actually recently just attended my
- 1:38commencement ceremony for the previous
- 1:40college that I got my psychology degree
- 1:42at. Here's actually a picture of me just
- 1:45the other day.
- 1:46>> [music]
- 1:46>> It was great and that itself was
- 1:48motivation to make this video. But, to
- 1:52begin with, I want to step right into
- 1:54[music] the first principle
- 1:56of managing stress while studying. The
- 2:00first thing you have to think of is
- 2:03self-compassion.
- 2:04Because often times when we have all
- 2:06these circumstances going on in our
- 2:08lives, it's easy to want to blame
- 2:10yourself [music] and say, "I'm just not
- 2:12handling it well enough. I'm not smart
- 2:14enough to know how to handle it and I
- 2:16>> [music]
- 2:17>> I'm not efficient enough to have these
- 2:19resources or I'm not disciplined enough
- 2:21to incorporate [music] these practices
- 2:23into my life to help balance it out
- 2:25studies while
- 2:27trying to focus on self-care [music] and
- 2:30minimizing and ameliorating that stress
- 2:33that you're dealing with.
- 2:34You want to be compassionate with
- 2:36yourself about this because
- 2:38>> [music]
- 2:38>> we can't find a way to manage stress. We
- 2:42can't manage stress from
- 2:44self-rejection or self-hatred [music]
- 2:46because that only digs us deeper into
- 2:48that hole of self-hatred or
- 2:51>> [music]
- 2:51>> rejection. Because and I've spoken about
- 2:54this many times in previous videos of
- 2:56mine, but I really place the emphasis on
- 2:59taking action from a sense of self-love.
- 3:02Loving yourself first.
- 3:04>> [music]
- 3:04>> And then a lot of times I get questions,
- 3:06"Well, how exactly
- 3:08do [music]
- 3:09I love myself?" Ask yourself this.
- 3:13Where aren't you loving yourself? Are
- 3:16you giving yourself time to prepare a
- 3:18healthy meal? Are you giving yourself
- 3:21time to have a spa day, take a bath? It
- 3:25can really just be the little things in
- 3:27life. Like, I know not everybody
- 3:30>> [music]
- 3:30>> thinks about cooking a healthy meal from
- 3:32their for thems- for their selves.
- 3:35But, in my experience, in my opinion,
- 3:38this is one of the most nourishing, most
- 3:41loving things you can do about yourself
- 3:43do for yourself because you're
- 3:46feeding your body, mind, and soul. When
- 3:49you make a delicious, healthy meal for
- 3:52yourself,
- 3:53>> [music]
- 3:53>> when you look in the mirror and tell
- 3:55yourself,
- 3:56"I am worthy
- 3:58>> [music]
- 3:58>> of great things. I am worthy
- 4:02of rest." I'm actually looking at myself
- 4:04into my mirror as I say this because
- 4:06there's a mirror right at my [music]
- 4:07desk, which is great because, you know,
- 4:10when it while I'm recording, I get to
- 4:11look at myself and,
- 4:12>> [music]
- 4:12>> you know, take admiration for myself and
- 4:16admire the effort that I'm putting into
- 4:17my videos, well.
- 4:20I'm basically juggling all these things
- 4:21at once. Like, yes, I'm a busy person.
- 4:25Do I feel overwhelmed with working
- 4:27full-time, being a full-time student,
- 4:28and managing two YouTube channels? Of
- 4:31course, I feel overwhelmed. As a content
- 4:34creator preaching self-development,
- 4:37self-healing, and manifestation,
- 4:39I still need to know the relevance of
- 4:42facing [music] these challenging
- 4:44emotions because if I didn't deal with
- 4:46them, then
- 4:47there's no relevance in teaching you
- 4:48guys how to handle these emotions if
- 4:50[music] I didn't experience them.
- 4:54So, to take a step back and reflect,
- 4:57>> [music]
- 4:57>> be compa- be compassionate with
- 4:59yourself. Have that conversation that,
- 5:01[music]
- 5:02"Hey,
- 5:03where am I not loving myself? And
- 5:07how do I need to nourish my inner world,
- 5:10my mind, my body, and soul so [music]
- 5:14I can fill my own cup before I pour it
- 5:17into my studies?" [music]
- 5:20The next thing we want to focus on is
- 5:23the assessment [music]
- 5:24part of this step. So, assess where you
- 5:28are versus where you want to be.
- 5:31What do your current grades look like?
- 5:35Where are you in your academic standing?
- 5:38When I first [music] began college, I
- 5:41was not in a good position because prior
- 5:44to my first year, my first semester of
- 5:47college, I had no classroom experience
- 5:50[music]
- 5:50and I wasn't used to juggling
- 5:54full-time school [music] because I grew
- 5:56out
- 5:57I grew outside of the traditional
- 5:59classroom setting. So, being in a
- 6:00classroom setting was very intimidating
- 6:03and I ended up dropping
- 6:05two courses. My grade was very bad to
- 6:08begin with. I had a I had like a B- or
- 6:10something like that like that which
- 6:12isn't so bad.
- 6:14But, to my standards, I don't consider
- 6:17that as good.
- 6:18So,
- 6:20like I mentioned previously, I had to
- 6:23have that compassionate conversation
- 6:25with myself and say,
- 6:27"This is my first year of college. I've
- 6:29never had classroom experience before.
- 6:31There is no one in my life to really get
- 6:33me
- 6:33>> [music]
- 6:34>> here to where I am now
- 6:35to allow me to have that experience."
- 6:39I had to gauge
- 6:41where I wanted to be and that was
- 6:44finishing the semester with a 3.5
- 6:46[music]
- 6:46GPA and still finishing with seven
- 6:49credits on my transcript.
- 6:52Luckily, I actually finished that
- 6:55semester with a [music] 4.0 GPA
- 6:58and
- 6:59that was so that was at the college that
- 7:01I just graduated with with my psychology
- 7:04degree and
- 7:05>> [music]
- 7:05>> I ended up having a 4.0 GPA throughout
- 7:09the entire 2 years that I spent at that
- 7:11college and I
- 7:13credit that [music] to myself love and
- 7:17constantly gauging where I wanted to be
- 7:19against where I currently was. So, this
- 7:22kind of feeds into the next thing that I
- 7:25want to talk about is
- 7:27beyond assessing our current standing in
- 7:30[music] our academic performance, we
- 7:32want to assess what we control in our
- 7:34lives that is contributing to our focus
- 7:37in our studies.
- 7:38So,
- 7:40assess what you control around your
- 7:42study time versus what you can't.
- 7:43>> [music]
- 7:43>> Find opportunities / practices to relax
- 7:46your nervous system such as journaling,
- 7:49meditation,
- 7:50>> [music]
- 7:50>> yoga, therapy, or visualization,
- 7:52especially when it comes to the stress
- 7:54because
- 7:56>> [music]
- 7:57>> let's be real.
- 7:58School is very stressful. We're all
- 8:00human and we all experience stress
- 8:02surrounding school. [music]
- 8:03So, I want you to think about the things
- 8:06in your life that you can control that
- 8:08are contributing to the stress.
- 8:11So, for example,
- 8:13I want I highly believe I strongly
- 8:16believe that 90% of the things that are
- 8:20stressing us out are within the mind.
- 8:24And I realized this because I have been
- 8:26journaling for almost 4 years straight
- 8:28[music] every single day and the more I
- 8:30look back at my old entries, the more I
- 8:32realize
- 8:34that [music]
- 8:35it was really my thoughts that were
- 8:36stressing me out. Yes, the the external
- 8:39environment in my immediate
- 8:41surroundings, it would be easy to blame
- 8:44that for
- 8:45the reason of my stress, but if we if we
- 8:48want to be in control and we want to
- 8:51>> [music]
- 8:51>> regulate that stress, we have we have to
- 8:53gauge like how much of that is mental
- 8:56because
- 8:58you could let's say for example, so I
- 9:00have four younger siblings and [music]
- 9:02when I used to live with my family when
- 9:03I was 17,
- 9:06there was noise all the time and I'm
- 9:08I I like to have my quiet time, so it
- 9:10was it was very hard for me to focus,
- 9:14but even in the times of silence, I was
- 9:16still reflecting on the times where I
- 9:18was upset and I would ruminate on
- 9:21my anger and my fury about the noise
- 9:24that would go on even in the times where
- 9:26it was quiet, I would still
- 9:27>> [music]
- 9:28>> ruminate on that. So, I had to journal
- 9:30out I am in control of my thoughts and
- 9:33one thing [music] I can do to control my
- 9:35thoughts is by practicing yoga Because
- 9:37when we practice yoga, that actually
- 9:39brings your mind
- 9:40>> [music]
- 9:41>> down to somatic awareness. It brings
- 9:43your mind's focus to your body because
- 9:45when you do yoga, you have to focus on
- 9:47balance. [music] You literally have to
- 9:49be so focused on every single movement
- 9:51so you don't fall over because I do a
- 9:53lot of standing yoga and that is [music]
- 9:55something that
- 9:57really, really, really helped me bring
- 9:59my mind
- 10:00to my body instead of my mind spiraling
- 10:03to my thoughts because
- 10:05>> [music]
- 10:05>> back then I used to try to use my
- 10:07thoughts to control my thoughts, but
- 10:09that actually exacerbated the process.
- 10:11So, it's all about like bringing
- 10:13your mind [music] down to your somatic,
- 10:16your bodily awareness before proceeding
- 10:18[music]
- 10:19with again trying to use your thoughts
- 10:22to control even more thoughts. [music]
- 10:25So,
- 10:27the bottom line is we want to be aware
- 10:30of what we can control. [music]
- 10:33Don't blame your surroundings because
- 10:35the truth is even if you're in a chaotic
- 10:37environment, it is within your control
- 10:39to step out of that chaotic environment.
- 10:42It is with [music]
- 10:43in It is within your control to put in
- 10:45headphones. It is within your control to
- 10:48find a quieter room to [music] study and
- 10:51really put that effort into everything
- 10:53that you're learning.
- 10:55Now,
- 10:56the fourth step in this process that I
- 10:58want to talk about is [music]
- 11:00beginning to take action. And this very
- 11:03much
- 11:04reflects the latter that I just
- 11:06explained was taking action. You know,
- 11:07stepping into a quieter room, putting in
- 11:09earbuds, [music]
- 11:10practicing yoga. Maybe it's meditation.
- 11:13Something that just makes you [music]
- 11:15feel calm.
- 11:16One thing that I like to do in
- 11:17particular is if I'm feeling overwhelmed
- 11:21with studying and working and [music]
- 11:23managing two YouTube channels, something
- 11:25I really like to do is I just come to my
- 11:29desk and I either light maybe [music]
- 11:31two or three candles. I love candles and
- 11:33I love essential oils because I feel
- 11:36like aromatherapy really has the power
- 11:38to bring us [music] down into the
- 11:40physical realm, like I previously
- 11:43emphasized when I talked about yoga and
- 11:45bringing the mind down into the bodily
- 11:46awareness.
- 11:48I like to do that while I'm studying
- 11:50because I've actually made a connection
- 11:52with a certain scent and I've
- 11:54made that association. Like, when I
- 11:56smell that particular scent of the
- 11:58candle or essential oil, like I
- 11:59immediately think studies. I immediately
- 12:02think of like,
- 12:03>> [music]
- 12:03>> it's time to be calm and it's time to be
- 12:05focused on my studies. So, it's kind of
- 12:07like somatic anchoring, which is
- 12:09something I've mentioned [music]
- 12:10previously in a few of my videos. So, I
- 12:12would highly suggest just finding a
- 12:15place where you can be alone, a place
- 12:16that's quiet, maybe put in some [music]
- 12:18earbuds. And again, just light candles
- 12:21or get an essential oil diffuser.
- 12:26One thing a lot of people like to do
- 12:27while studying that I want to also
- 12:29mention is listening to music while
- 12:30studying.
- 12:31There you can listen to study
- 12:33frequencies and like instrumental
- 12:34[music]
- 12:35calming music, but I actually don't
- 12:36recommend listening to music with lyrics
- 12:39because that is scientifically proven in
- 12:41studies to actually hinder your focus
- 12:43[music]
- 12:44because you shift between trying to
- 12:47listen to the lyrics [music] while
- 12:48studying. Like, even if you're not
- 12:51consciously aware of it, we
- 12:52subconsciously tend to do it because
- 12:54when we're listening to music, we want
- 12:55to focus on the lyrics and we want to
- 12:57>> [music]
- 12:57>> we want to focus on like the feel good
- 13:00vibes from the music. So,
- 13:02when you're studying and if you want to
- 13:03listen to music, listen to like gamma
- 13:06waves frequencies [music] because they
- 13:08can actually like
- 13:10scientifically boost different types of
- 13:13brain waves released by your brain and
- 13:15actually like helps you focus while
- 13:17studying. [music] So, like I actually
- 13:19have made subliminals on my subliminal
- 13:21channel. Like, there's a mental agility
- 13:23subliminal that I made. I I to it
- 13:25specifically when I'm studying because I
- 13:27have actually incorporated frequencies
- 13:29in that subliminal. I believe it was
- 13:31741 hertz paired [music] with gamma
- 13:34waves to help accelerate
- 13:37my ability to focus
- 13:39>> [music]
- 13:39>> while studying while also listening to
- 13:41brain power affirmations in the
- 13:43background.
- 13:44So, anyway, I'm going to start stop
- 13:47blabbering and I'm going to move on to
- 13:49um the fifth step of this process
- 13:52is I want you to evaluate this action
- 13:55plan [music]
- 13:56{slash} whatever this relaxing technique
- 13:58you're doing to help manage your stress
- 14:00while studying.
- 14:02So, I want you to ask is it working or
- 14:05is it not? I want you to measure how far
- 14:07you've come to your goals if you've
- 14:09already completed them. Basically,
- 14:11asking yourself what went right or what
- 14:13went wrong and use that as a learning
- 14:15opportunity for how to improve in the
- 14:19future. [music] So, now that you have
- 14:21your
- 14:22you know, maybe it's your little quiet
- 14:24place where you light your candle or
- 14:27diffuse your essential oil, listen to
- 14:29your affirmations, listen to your
- 14:30subliminals while studying. I personally
- 14:32listen to the subliminals while studying
- 14:35like I like I said in other videos and
- 14:38>> [music]
- 14:38>> maybe I I know I spoke a little about
- 14:41that in this video in particular, but
- 14:43>> [music]
- 14:44>> really just assess how far you've come
- 14:48to your academic goals based on like how
- 14:50much you've been able to regulate your
- 14:52nervous system through making yourself
- 14:54feel calmer and not feeling as much
- 14:56stress.
- 14:57So, in my case
- 14:59recently because I just began the summer
- 15:01semester and I'm taking 15 credits,
- 15:03three of those classes being accelerated
- 15:05while working full-time and managing two
- 15:07YouTube channels
- 15:09I've really had to be hyper aware
- 15:11of my surroundings and the in the
- 15:14environment that I've made for studying
- 15:16because I mean, that is so incredibly
- 15:19condensed [music] and
- 15:20my brain literally
- 15:23feels like it's just on go mode 24/7
- 15:26because I'm constantly thinking of all
- 15:28the things I have to do.
- 15:30But, because I've trained my nervous
- 15:32system to realize
- 15:34I chose I chose to be full-time. I chose
- 15:37to be a full-time student, a full-time
- 15:38worker, and manage [music] two YouTube
- 15:40channels. That is within my control. And
- 15:42if I need to stop, I have the power to
- 15:45stop. So, realize that you're the one in
- 15:47control here, and you [music] have the
- 15:49power to reassess and reassess
- 15:53and adjust your environment, your your
- 15:56goals based on where you are. So, you
- 15:58basically have to be
- 16:00>> [music]
- 16:00>> hyper-aware.
- 16:01And then
- 16:02just sit back and relax and realize that
- 16:04you're the one in control.
- 16:07So, like
- 16:09the bottom line of this step is just
- 16:11basically
- 16:13making adjustments as needed and [music]
- 16:16starting over with step three and repeat
- 16:18as needed. So, step three being assess
- 16:20where you control [music] what you can
- 16:23control around your study time versus
- 16:25what you can't and finding
- 16:26opportunities/practices
- 16:28to relax your nervous system. Again,
- 16:31maybe that's journaling, meditation,
- 16:32yoga, therapy, or visualization.
- 16:37So, I want to keep this video short and
- 16:39succinct because my time is [music] a
- 16:43little limited here.
- 16:45So, if you stayed until the end of this
- 16:47video, thank you so much. It's been an
- 16:49honor to talk with you, and
- 16:51>> [music]
- 16:52>> don't forget to like, comment, and
- 16:54subscribe for more content like this. If
- 16:56you guys have any questions, do not be
- 16:58afraid to reach out to me in the comment
