How To Learn A Language: Be Comfortable With Making Mistakes — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00hey guys so today I want to talk about
- 0:01what I think is probably the most
- 0:03important aspect of learning a new
- 0:04language and that is feeling comfortable
- 0:06with making mistakes and making many
- 0:09many many mistakes so I've seen a lot of
- 0:12people who are perfectly capable of
- 0:14reading and writing but their ability to
- 0:16speak is subpar it's not so good um
- 0:20primarily because they were always
- 0:22hesitant and they're always afraid of
- 0:25saying things and making mistakes so
- 0:27they always had to wait until they
- 0:28perfected something before they could
- 0:29use it
- 0:30and they didn't know how to fluidly
- 0:32connect things because their the way
- 0:34their mind works everything had to be
- 0:35perfect before it could be vocalized all
- 0:39babies do in the first few years of
- 0:40their lives are make mistakes they just
- 0:42make sounds like GLE garle blah blah
- 0:45blah you know all they do is is just
- 0:47this and then
- 0:48eventually they say ma or Mama right and
- 0:52everyone says oh my God this so amazing
- 0:54this is a he said his first word right
- 0:56and the baby at that point made this
- 0:58connection that oh this sound gets this
- 1:01reaction this is the correct sound to
- 1:03incite this reaction all the baby has
- 1:05been doing up to that point has been
- 1:07making attempts thousands of not
- 1:10millions of attempts at trying to
- 1:12communicate this is the complete
- 1:13opposite of how a lot of people approach
- 1:16speaking when they learn a new language
- 1:18academically they don't feel like it's
- 1:21worthwhile to make an attempt at at
- 1:25communicating uh until they perfected a
- 1:27particular sentence or phrase um and
- 1:30then and even even if that's the case
- 1:32they just have this one phrase that
- 1:34they're able to say and they can't
- 1:36connect it fluidly in a conversation
- 1:38because they have you know they've
- 1:40invested everything into that one phrase
- 1:42so when you want to learn a language the
- 1:45most important thing is to just start
- 1:48speaking it's just just you know even if
- 1:5190% of what you're saying is incorrect
- 1:53um they're they're probably going to
- 1:55understand anyways because it's not just
- 1:57what what's coming out of your mouth but
- 1:58it's also body Lang and context so with
- 2:01all of these combined the other person
- 2:03is probably going to understand what
- 2:05you're saying anyways so if you're
- 2:07hesitating because you think the other
- 2:08person's not going to understand trust
- 2:10me they understand at least a little bit
- 2:12if not all of what you're trying to say
- 2:14if you're hesitating to use your
- 2:16language because you think that the
- 2:18other person is going to look down upon
- 2:20you um well think of it this way if
- 2:23someone's trying to communicate to you
- 2:24in your language uh and they're they're
- 2:27still obviously a student or they're in
- 2:28the process of learning how do you judge
- 2:31them right I mean you're probably not
- 2:33overanalyzing and thinking oh this
- 2:34person's not very intelligent no you're
- 2:36just kind of you're maybe perhaps you're
- 2:37even appreciative that they're learning
- 2:39the language so chances are first of all
- 2:41they're not looking down upon you and
- 2:42they're probably appreciative so it
- 2:45doesn't doesn't harm the situation at
- 2:47all and we always have something to
- 2:48laugh about or we have an additional
- 2:50topic to talk about so really attempting
- 2:53to use the language has no downside even
- 2:56if you're making mistakes um and if
- 2:58anything it's the most important aspect
- 3:00this is the only time where you get to
- 3:01use the language in a natural situation
- 3:04how many minutes of the day are you
- 3:06actually saying something that isn't
- 3:07just memorized right I mean if you
- 3:10actually try to calculate it probably
- 3:11not too much so you really have to use
- 3:13all the time that you can in with a a
- 3:16partner that would be able to that you'd
- 3:17be able to communicate with in that
- 3:18language uh to your benefit uh so that's
- 3:21it I mean you know all I have to really
- 3:23say conclusion is use the language uh
- 3:27even if you're making mistakes just use
- 3:28it keep making mistakes that's the way
- 3:30you should learn a language that's the
- 3:31way everyone has learned their first
- 3:33language that's the way you learned your
- 3:34first language so please just keep
- 3:36making mistakes and eventually you'll be
- 3:37able to converse and that's it that's
- 3:39all it takes to really start learning a
- 3:41language is just feel comfortable with
- 3:42making mistakes and you'll get there all
- 3:44right okay good luck everyone I'll see
- 3:46you guys in the next video ciao
