- 0:07hi i'm kalyn richardson a world cup
- 0:09alpine ski racer turned professional big
- 0:12mountain skier and i totally agree with
- 0:14you it is not always easy to know what
- 0:16to wear skiing whether you're new to the
- 0:19sport or a seasoned veteran like me
- 0:22there are all kinds of factors
- 0:24precipitation terrain
- 0:27even who you are skiing with
- 0:28i know that cruising groomers with my
- 0:30mom requires different gear the lapping
- 0:32powder runs with my nephews
- 0:34so where to start
- 0:37keep it simple three words three layers
- 0:40base layer mid layer outerwear three
- 0:44quality layers that complement one
- 0:46another giving your body room to breathe
- 0:47and move is key to comfort warmth and
- 0:50protection
- 0:51let's start with the foundation
- 0:53the base layer
- 0:54when skiing it's all about comfort and
- 0:56comfort for me is all about staying dry
- 0:59you've probably heard about wicking
- 1:00material right wicking fabric requires
- 1:03your body heat to evaporate moisture
- 1:05which means if you are cold or you are
- 1:07in a cold environment wicking loses full
- 1:09effectiveness well lethal fiber is
- 1:12special in that it doesn't wick moisture
- 1:15instead it transfers it from your skin
- 1:17to the outside of the base layer meaning
- 1:19there won't be damp fabric laying
- 1:20against your skin dry skin equals
- 1:23comfort in the mountains and beyond the
- 1:25technical stuff my leafy merino base
- 1:27layer is just ridiculously comfy the
- 1:30greatest endorsement i can give it is to
- 1:32say that after skiing i often stay
- 1:34snuggled in my base layer all evening
- 1:36long
- 1:38moving on to layer number two
- 1:40the mid layer
- 1:41what is the purpose of a mid layer it's
- 1:44all about warmth the goal is to maintain
- 1:46an optimal temperature with minimal
- 1:48effort however the bulkiest insulator
- 1:51does not always equal the warmest
- 1:53insulator a mid layer designed for
- 1:55layering is a thing of beauty
- 1:57my leaf loft air insulator is super low
- 2:00volume yet incredibly warm because it is
- 2:02designed to trap and utilize my own body
- 2:04heat instead of just thickening a layer
- 2:06between my body and the elements
- 2:08thicker doesn't always mean warmer a
- 2:10thinner insulator provides far more
- 2:12mobility which is important in a mid
- 2:14layer you can always shed a layer but
- 2:16because the design is so versatile most
- 2:18of the time all you need to do to stay
- 2:20regulated is to open some jacket vents
- 2:22the warmth and versatility is built in
- 2:24without weighing you down
- 2:27and finally we have come to the third
- 2:29layer outerwear also known as the jacket
- 2:33for ski jackets it's all about
- 2:35protection they are the first line of
- 2:37defense against the wind snow rain and
- 2:39cold what separates a great jacket from
- 2:42the rest is a great jacket's ability to
- 2:44be both highly protective and highly
- 2:46breathable
- 2:47without a breathable jacket your body
- 2:49vapor can't escape properly in the
- 2:51mountains the best performing jackets
- 2:53are windproof waterproof and breathable
- 2:56my elevation infinity shell jacket
- 2:58adapts incredibly well as my activity
- 3:01level and the weather conditions
- 3:02fluctuate it gives me unmatched
- 3:04protection against the elements while
- 3:06still allowing my body to breathe
- 3:08breathable ski jackets keep you dry from
- 3:10the outside and the inside moisture is
- 3:13the enemy to staying warm and a great
- 3:14ski jacket conquers
- 3:16all there you have it keep it simple
- 3:20three layers and you're ready to go in a
- 3:22snap so layer up be smart and have an
- 3:25absolutely fantastic time in the
- 3:27mountains no matter what
- 3:33[Music]
- 3:35you
