How to Knit a Tank Top (free pattern + tutorial) PART 1 — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00In this video, I'll show you how to knit
- 0:01the Coastline tank top. This is a breezy
- 0:04tank that's knit in worsted weight yarn.
- 0:07It features one by one rib and a salvage
- 0:09edge around the arm holes that extends
- 0:11all the way down to the sides of the
- 0:13tank top to the hem. The coastline tank
- 0:15top has an optional split hem. It
- 0:17incorporates a cable cross that
- 0:19seamlessly merges the ribbing into the
- 0:21split hem. You can also knit a regular
- 0:24hem, too. This pattern has nine sizes
- 0:26that range from a finished bust
- 0:27measurement of 30 in to 54 in.
- 0:33This pattern is for experienced knitts
- 0:35who are comfortable knitting, pearling,
- 0:37knitting in the round, reading a
- 0:39pattern, and those who have knit
- 0:40patterns with some shaping. Skills used
- 0:43for this tank top. You'll be using an
- 0:45M1L, an M1R, a backward loop caston, or
- 0:48a cable caston. You'll be working
- 0:50slipped salvage edges, a cable cross,
- 0:52Italian tubular bindoff, or binding off
- 0:55in pattern. You'll also be picking up
- 0:57and knitting stitches around the
- 0:58neckline.
- 1:02We start by casting on stitches for the
- 1:04back piece. Then we knit down to the
- 1:06armpits and work some increases to shape
- 1:08the back. The stitches are put on hold
- 1:10on scrap yarn. Then we pick up stitches
- 1:12at the back to create two front pieces.
- 1:14The left front is worked with increases
- 1:16to shape it into a curve. The same thing
- 1:19is done for the right front. Then we
- 1:21cast on stitches to join the right and
- 1:22left fronts together. More shaping is
- 1:24done at the arm holes. Then the front
- 1:26piece is joined together with the back
- 1:28piece. And we work the whole tank top in
- 1:30the round. Then we work the hem, either
- 1:32a split hem or circular hem. Lastly, we
- 1:35pick up stitches at the neckline and
- 1:36knit in one by one rib to finish off the
- 1:38neckline. Weave in ends block and you're
- 1:40done. If you'd like to knit the
- 1:41coastline tank top, then grab the free
- 1:43pattern at the link in the description.

- 1:55description.
- 1:58I'm using Sadness Garn in the color
- 2:01matcha for my size 5 tank top. You'll
- 2:03also need a pair of 4mm 32-in circular
- 2:06needles. A 3.5 mm 16 or 24 in circular
- 2:11needle for the neck band. A 3.5 mm 32 in
- 2:14circular needle for the hem. Stitch
- 2:16markers, scrap yarn, measuring tape,
- 2:18scissors, cable needle, or a bobby pin.
- 2:21The gauge for this pattern is 20
- 2:22stitches and 31 rows equals 10 cm or 4
- 2:26in in stockinet stitch using larger
- 2:28needles.
- 2:31The Coastline tank top is designed to
- 2:33have around 2 to three inches of
- 2:35positive ease. Use this chart to help
- 2:37you figure out your size based on your
- 2:39bust measurement and the finished tank
- 2:41measurements. For reference, my model
- 2:43Camila has a 35 in bust and she's
- 2:45wearing size 5, which has a finished
- 2:48bust measurement of 37.75 in, which
- 2:51gives her 2.75 in of positive ease.
- 2:56So I'm on page three of my pattern and
- 2:59I'm going to start looking for some size
- 3:02related instructions. So our pattern
- 3:04starts with saying that with larger
- 3:06needles we're going to cast on 64 66 66
- 3:1168 70 and on and on. So we've got these
- 3:14numbers within parentheses and that
- 3:16tells me this is a size related
- 3:18instruction. So I'm knitting a size
- 3:20five. So that means I'm going to be
- 3:22casting on size one, two, three, four,
- 3:26five, 70 stitches. So I'm going to
- 3:29highlight that 70 because that relates
- 3:31to my size. If you're knitting size one,
- 3:33you'd highlight 64, size 2, 66, size 3,
- 3:3766, and on and on. Okay, so let's look
- 3:40for the rest of the size related
- 3:42instructions on this page. So down here
- 3:45I can see it says repeat rows 1 and two
- 3:47until back measures 16 open bracket and
- 3:50a bunch of numbers. So that is a size
- 3:52related instruction. So I'm going to
- 3:54highlight 14 cuz that relates to size
- 3:58five. And these are the inches. So I
- 4:00might as well just highlight the inches
- 4:02as well. Okay. So let's go down. And
- 4:05here we see we've got repeat rows 1 to
- 4:08two a further six open bracket 7 10 11
- 4:1113 more times. So, I'm going to
- 4:14highlight 13 cuz that's my size five.
- 4:17And here we have a stitch count. So, I'm
- 4:20going to highlight 98 for my size. So,
- 4:22go through the pattern and highlight the
- 4:24instructions that relate to your size.
- 4:29So, I've got my beautiful yarn here and
- 4:32I am ready to cast on. So, I'm going to
- 4:34use my larger needles, which are my 4 mm
- 4:38needles. I'm going to use the longtail
- 4:40caston to cast on. So, I'm knitting a
- 4:43size five. So, I am going to cast on 70
- 4:47stitches. So, go ahead and cast on the
- 4:49number that you need for your size. So,
- 4:52here is our setup row. We're going to
- 4:54start by slipping one stitch knitwise
- 4:57with the yarn in back. And all that
- 4:59means is we're going to use our right
- 5:00needle and slip it into the first stitch
- 5:03as if we were knitting it. And then
- 5:05we're just going to slip it right off
- 5:07the left needle onto our right needle.
- 5:09And that is our slip one knitwise with
- 5:11the yarn in back. Next, we're going to
- 5:13do a knit one, pearl one. And we're
- 5:16going to do that three times. So, let's
- 5:19go. We're going to do a knit one,
- 5:22bring our yarn up front, and then do a
- 5:24pearl one, pearl that, and then I'm
- 5:27going to bring my yarn to the back and
- 5:28just give it a little tug. And that is
- 5:31the first repeat of the knit one, pearl
- 5:33one. Now, let's do this two more times.
- 5:35I'm going to go knit one, give it a
- 5:38little tug, bring the yarn up front and
- 5:41pearl one, bring the yarn to the back,
- 5:44and a little tug. And then let's do our
- 5:47third repeat. Knit one, tug, bring the
- 5:50yarn up, pearl one,
- 5:54and give it a little tug. Now, we're
- 5:57going to do a PM, which means place
- 5:59marker. And I've got my little bowl of
- 6:02markers here. Let's grab this one. So,
- 6:04I'm just going to place my marker onto
- 6:07the right needle. That's a PM. And now
- 6:10we're going to pearl to the last seven
- 6:13stitches. So, all we're going to do is
- 6:14just pearl until we get to the last
- 6:16seven stitches. All right. So, let's
- 6:19bring our yarn up front and just pearl
- 6:21across. Now, after I've placed this
- 6:24marker, I'm going to pearl the first
- 6:26stitch, but then I'm going to bring my
- 6:27yarn to the back and give it a little
- 6:30tug. and then bring the yarn up front
- 6:32and then just pearl the rest of the
- 6:34stitches. This first section where we
- 6:36did our knit one, pearl one, these are
- 6:38our edge stitches and they make up that
- 6:41part of the armhole that looks like
- 6:44really pretty and finished. And the
- 6:47reason why I like to tug after each knit
- 6:50one and pearl one is that it just
- 6:52tightens up the stitches really nicely
- 6:54and makes it look really snatched
- 6:56and like really tight. So that's why I
- 6:59like to do that little extra tug after
- 7:01each stitch. So now I've got seven
- 7:04stitches left on my row. We are going to
- 7:08PM. So we're going to place marker,
- 7:11place this onto my right needle, and
- 7:13then we're going to do a pearl one, knit
- 7:15one three times. Okay. So I'm going to
- 7:19pearl one.
- 7:22And again, I'm gonna bring my yarn to
- 7:23the back, give it a little tug, and then
- 7:26I'm going to knit one, another tug,
- 7:30bring the yarn up front, do a pearl one,
- 7:33bring the yarn to the back, a little
- 7:35tug, knit one, tug,
- 7:39pearl one, yarn to the back, tug,
- 7:44and my last stitch, I'm going to do a
- 7:46pearl one. So, we'll bring our yarn up
- 7:48front and pearl that last stitch. There
- 7:53we go. All right. So, now we have
- 7:55completed our setup row. So, these seven
- 7:58edge stitches that are marked off by the
- 8:00stitch markers are basically your edge
- 8:01stitches. And you're always going to
- 8:03start off by slipping one knitwise with
- 8:06the yarn in back and then just following
- 8:08the rib. Pearl one, knit one, pearl one,
- 8:10knit one, pearl one, knit one. Um, and
- 8:12when you get to the other side of the
- 8:15edge stitches, you're going to do rib
- 8:17again. Basically, one by one rib. Knit
- 8:19one, pearl one, knit one, pearl one,
- 8:20knit one, pearl one. And the last stitch
- 8:21of the edge stitches is always going to
- 8:23be a pearl. And that's what creates that
- 8:26really beautiful edge around the
- 8:28armhole. Okay, so let's work row one.
- 8:31We're going to start by doing a slip one
- 8:34knitwise with the yarn in back. So, I'm
- 8:36going to insert my right needle into the
- 8:38first stitch as if to knit. And then I'm
- 8:40just going to slip that stitch right
- 8:42off. And that is our slip one knitwise
- 8:44with the yarn in back. That's what
- 8:45creates that really beautiful salvage
- 8:47edge. Okay. Now we're going to bring our
- 8:49yarn up front and we're going to do a
- 8:51pearl one knit one three times.
- 8:57And then we're going to slip our marker
- 9:00over from the left needle to the right
- 9:02needle. And now it's really easy. We're
- 9:05just going to knit all the way to the
- 9:08next marker. Okay. So, we're basically
- 9:11just knitting all the way over D till we
- 9:15hit this marker over here. Here we go.
- 9:18Now, we've hit the marker. I'm going to
- 9:20slip the marker over to my right needle.
- 9:22That's what the SM means. And then we're
- 9:25going to do a knit one, pearl one three
- 9:28times. So, here we go. We're working
- 9:30those edge stitches again. We're going
- 9:31to knit one, tug, and pearl one. Bring
- 9:36the yarn to the back. Little tug.
- 9:41And our last stitch, we're going to do a
- 9:43pearl one. It's always going to be a
- 9:45pearl one for these edge stitches. Now,
- 9:47we're going to turn our work over and
- 9:48work row two. Now, row two is really,
- 9:51really similar to our setup row. We're
- 9:54basically going to work the edge
- 9:56stitches as established and then we're
- 9:58going to pearl all the way to the marker
- 10:02and then work those edge stitches. Okay.
- 10:04So, when it says work the edge stitches,
- 10:07you're really just going to be following
- 10:08the pattern that was laid out on the
- 10:10setup row and row one. So, you're going
- 10:13to slip the first stitch as if to knit
- 10:16just like that. And then you're going to
- 10:18do a knit one, pearl one. You're
- 10:20essentially following whatever the
- 10:22stitch is. So this next stitch is a knit
- 10:25stitch. So I'm going to knit into it.
- 10:28And after I've slipped this first
- 10:30salvage stitch, I'd like to give a
- 10:31little tug again and then knit into the
- 10:34next stitch and a tug. So this next
- 10:36stitch is a pearl stitch, so I'm going
- 10:38to pearl it. Bring the yarn to the back.
- 10:41The next stitch is a knit stitch, so I'm
- 10:43going to knit it. Tug.
- 10:48So that is really what it means when it
- 10:49says to work as established for the edge
- 10:52stitches. So I'm going to bring the yarn
- 10:54back to the front and then just pearl
- 10:56the rest of the stitches all the way to
- 10:59the next marker. All right. And here is
- 11:03my marker. So we're just going to slip
- 11:06our marker over to the right needle. And
- 11:08now we're just essentially working one
- 11:10by one rib to the last stitch which we
- 11:12will pearl. So this next stitch here is
- 11:15a pearl stitch. So, I'm going to just
- 11:17pearl it. The yarn is up front. Pearl
- 11:20that stitch. Bring the yarn to the back.
- 11:22Tug. The next stitch is a knit stitch,
- 11:25so I'm going to knit it. Tug. And the
- 11:28next stitch is a pearl stitch, so I'm
- 11:30going to pearl it.
- 11:35And then we're going to work that to the
- 11:37last stitch, which we are going to
- 11:39pearl. Last edge stitch always gets
- 11:41pearled. So now you're going to repeat
- 11:44rows 1 to two until your piece measures
- 11:46the measurement that you need for your
- 11:49size. For me, I'm going to knit until my
- 11:51piece measures 5.5 in. So now let's
- 11:54measure our knitting. For me, I need 5
- 11:571/2 in. And I do have 5 1/2 in. Perfect.
- 12:01Make sure that you have a measurement
- 12:03for your size. And then we can move on
- 12:05to shaping the arm holes. All right. So
- 12:08make sure that you are ready to work a
- 12:10right side row. If you are on the wrong
- 12:12side, just knit one more wrong side row
- 12:14so that the next row is going to be a
- 12:16right side row. All right, so let's work
- 12:19the row one under shape arm holes. We're
- 12:22going to work the edge stitches up to
- 12:24the marker and then we're going to work
- 12:26an increase. Okay, so how that's going
- 12:28to go is we're just going to do our edge
- 12:30stitches. So once again, we're going to
- 12:32insert our our needle in, slip one
- 12:35knitwise with the yarn in back, tighten
- 12:37it up, and work the edge stitches, which
- 12:40is like a one by one rib. So now I've
- 12:43reached my marker. So I'm going to slip
- 12:44it over. So now I'm going to work an
- 12:47M1L. So when you take a look at your
- 12:49knitting, you can see this strand of
- 12:51yarn, right, that is running between the
- 12:52two stitches on our needle. I can
- 12:55actually just pick it up. Whoops. Just
- 12:57pick it up right here. Right? little bar
- 13:00running between the two stitches. So,
- 13:02with my left needle, I'm going to pick
- 13:04up that little bar from the front
- 13:06just like this. Okay. So, I've just
- 13:08picked up that strand of yarn between
- 13:10these two stitches. I'll do that again
- 13:13with my left needle. I'm going to go in
- 13:14the front and just pick up that strand
- 13:17of yarn. Now, with my right needle, I'm
- 13:19going to knit into the back of that
- 13:22loop. So, I'm not knitting into the
- 13:24front like this. Nope. I'm knitting into
- 13:27the back. There we go. Of that strand of
- 13:30yarn that we've picked up. And I'm
- 13:32literally going to wrap my yarn around
- 13:35and pull a stitch through. And then drop
- 13:38it off the left needle. And that is my
- 13:41M1L. Make one leftwise. And we have just
- 13:44increased by one stitch. That strand of
- 13:47yarn has now become one stitch. All
- 13:49right. So now we're just going to knit
- 13:51across our knitting all the way to
- 13:56the next marker. Okay, so when we hit
- 13:58this marker, we're going to increase by
- 14:00one and the stitch is going to lean
- 14:02towards the right. So, let's knit to the
- 14:05next marker. Now, I'm at the last stitch
- 14:08marker and we're going to do an M1R. So,
- 14:11we're going to make one rightwards. So,
- 14:14we're going to look for that little
- 14:15strand between the two stitches on our
- 14:17needle. And I can see that it's right
- 14:19here. So, with my left needle, I'm going
- 14:22to go behind the strand of yarn and pick
- 14:25it up like this. Okay. So, again, we're
- 14:28going to go swing our back needle to the
- 14:30back and then just pick up that strand
- 14:33of yarn that is between the two
- 14:35stitches. And then I'm going to knit
- 14:38into that strand of yarn from the front.
- 14:40Okay? Just like this. And knit into it.
- 14:44Okay? And then we'll slip our stitch
- 14:46marker and work the last seven edge
- 14:48stitches as established. So, if you're
- 14:51having trouble with the M1R or the M1L,
- 14:54I will link a video where I go through
- 14:56both of these increases in a lot more
- 14:58detail. Our last stitch, we're going to
- 15:01pearl. Great. All right. So, we've just
- 15:04completed row one, and now we're going
- 15:06to work row two. So, I'm going to turn
- 15:09my knitting over. And row two, we're
- 15:11just working even, which means that
- 15:13we're just going to work our edge
- 15:14stitches, pearl all of the stitches in
- 15:17the middle, and then work the edge
- 15:18stitches. All right, that's really it.
- 15:20So, I'm nearly at the end of row two.
- 15:23I'm just finishing up these edge
- 15:24stitches. My last stitch is always a
- 15:26pearl. All right, great. So, I've just
- 15:29finished working row one and row two.
- 15:32So, row one is our increase row. We will
- 15:35do an M1 L at the beginning of the row
- 15:38and then an M1R at the end of the row.
- 15:40And a row two is just the back side
- 15:43where we just pearl everything even and
- 15:45work the edge stitches. So let's take a
- 15:47look at our pattern. Our pattern says to
- 15:49repeat rows 1 to 2, 6, 7, 10, 11, 13,
- 15:5316, 19, 22, 25 more times. And then it
- 15:56has a stitch count. So by the end of all
- 15:58these increases, your size one will have
- 16:0178. Size 2 will have 82. size three will
- 16:03have 88 and yada yada. So, when we have
- 16:06increases or even decreases like this
- 16:08where where the pattern says to work
- 16:11this row x number of times, I like to
- 16:13actually chart out the instructions cuz
- 16:15I find it a lot easier. So, let's chart
- 16:17out the instructions for these repeat
- 16:20rows. So, we're going to repeat rows one
- 16:22to two. For my size, I'm going to repeat
- 16:24it 13 more times. So, I like to draw out
- 16:27the rows. So, this would be row one,
- 16:30which is the increase row. And I will
- 16:33just do a little plus sign to show that
- 16:35it's an increase row. And then I'll do
- 16:37row two, which is our even row. And I
- 16:40need to work both of these rows 13 more
- 16:44times. So, I'm just going to draw out 13
- 16:47rows.
- 16:49So, for instance, I'm going to work my
- 16:51row one increases where we do the M1L
- 16:53and the M1R. After that, I would just
- 16:56mark off that cell in my chart. And then
- 16:59I'm going to turn my work over and work
- 17:01the wrong side, the pearl side. That's
- 17:03would be row two. And after that, I'll
- 17:05just mark that off in my chart. And
- 17:07after doing that, I know that I've done
- 17:09one repeat of row one and row two. And I
- 17:12need to do that 13 times. Okay? So, I
- 17:14need to fill up this whole chart. And by
- 17:17the end of that, I should have 98
- 17:19stitches. So, I'll just write that in my
- 17:22chart. Okay? So, this is how I like to
- 17:24stay organized when I'm working
- 17:26increases or decreases. So, go ahead and
- 17:28repeat rows one to two the number of
- 17:31times you need for your size. All right,
- 17:33so I filled up my chart and I have
- 17:36completed my 13 increases. You have this
- 17:39gradual increase on both sides of the
- 17:42back. All right, so now we're going to
- 17:44place these stitches on hold. So, I like
- 17:46using scrap yarn because yarn is just a
- 17:48little bit lighter than circular
- 17:50needles. And I'm just going to unravel a
- 17:52length of yarn that is going to be long
- 17:55enough to accommodate my stitches.
- 17:57Thread up this scrap yarn. And then
- 18:00we're going to start moving these
- 18:02stitches onto my tapestry needle. So the
- 18:06stitch marker is going to be moved over
- 18:08as well.
- 18:10There we go. Now all the stitches are
- 18:12nice and secure. So now I'm just going
- 18:14to take my pair of scissors and just cut
- 18:16off the working yarn 8 in or so. Just
- 18:19leave a nice long tail end.
- 18:25I'm gonna turn my piece around. And now
- 18:28you can really see the back of the tank
- 18:31top taking shape. We're going to attach
- 18:33the fronts to the back of the tank top.
- 18:36Basically, from here to here and from
- 18:38here to here. So, looking at our
- 18:40instructions, it says we're going to
- 18:42place a removable stitch marker 17, 18,
- 18:4619, 20, or 22 stitches in from each edge
- 18:49along the caston edge of the back. We're
- 18:52basically going to count a number of
- 18:54stitches from the edge, and then we're
- 18:57going to place our stitch marker there.
- 18:59So, for my size, I'm going to count 19
- 19:01stitches in from the edge, and then
- 19:04place a stitch marker. And I'm going to
- 19:06do the same on this side as well. So,
- 19:07let's start at the left edge. We're
- 19:09going to count up 19 stitches starting
- 19:11from the edge. I can just spread out
- 19:14these edge stitches. And I can see that
- 19:17the slipped edge is going to be our
- 19:18first stitch. And beside that is the
- 19:21pearl stitch, which is sort of
- 19:22invisible. It's just kind of, you know,
- 19:24retracting into the knitting. So, we've
- 19:26got a slipped edge, one pearl, two, a
- 19:30knit stitch here, three, a pearl stitch
- 19:32here, four, a knit stitch, five, a pearl
- 19:36stitch right here, six, and then a knit
- 19:38stitch here, which is seven. So, from
- 19:41seven, I'm going to count another 12
- 19:43stitches for me. Um, so I can get up to
- 19:4619. So that's 7 8 9 10
- 19:5211 12 13 14
- 19:5715 16 17 18 19 and 20. Oops, I only
- 20:03needed 19. So let's back up one. And
- 20:06then at this point, I'm going to just
- 20:08place my stitch marker right here. Okay,
- 20:13so that will be 19 stitches in from the
- 20:16edge. Now, how am I counting up my
- 20:18stitches? Well, a stitch looks kind of
- 20:20like a little Vshape. Sometimes it's a
- 20:22Vshape and sometimes it's a little
- 20:24triangle. So, in my case, I'm actually
- 20:27counting up the little triangle shapes.
- 20:29Right here, this is one. This is two.
- 20:32This is three. And on and on. Now, it
- 20:34doesn't really matter if you're counting
- 20:36up V's or triangles. Just make sure
- 20:38you're counting up one or the other. So,
- 20:40we're going to move over to the right
- 20:42side. Now, on the right side, I also
- 20:44know that I have seven edge stitches.
- 20:46Right? Here's the slip stitch, which is
- 20:48one, pearl, which is two, knit, which is
- 20:50three, pearl, which is four, knit, which
- 20:53is five, pearl, which is six, and then
- 20:56another knit stitch here, which is
- 20:58seven. Okay, so from seven, 8, 9, 10,
- 21:05and 19. Insert my stitch marker right
- 21:08there. And now I've marked off both
- 21:10sides where I have 19 stitches counted
- 21:13in from each edge. Okay. So for your
- 21:16size, count up however many stitches you
- 21:18have and then mark up your back.
- 21:24First, we're going to start picking up
- 21:25from this edge. So we're going to grab
- 21:28our needle and also our working yarn.
- 21:31We're going to rejoin the yarn. Now
- 21:33we're going to just start where we
- 21:35placed our stitch marker. I'm going to
- 21:37stick my stitch marker into the stitch.
- 21:41Grab my working yarn. Loop it around my
- 21:44needle. Drag a stitch through. And my
- 21:46goal is to pick up 19 stitches from here
- 21:50to the edge. I'm going to go into a
- 21:53second stitch.
- 21:57Three.
- 21:59And then
- 22:01four.
- 22:03And five.
- 22:07And here we go. Six.
- 22:13So, we've got 12. Seven stitches are
- 22:16left. And I know that seven stitches are
- 22:18my edge stitches. So, now I want to make
- 22:21sure that when I pick up these last
- 22:23seven stitches that they align with
- 22:25these edge stitches so that when we are
- 22:27knitting the front of our tank top,
- 22:29those edge stitches merge from the back
- 22:31to the front. So, I'm going to grab one
- 22:34more stitch. So, that's 13. So, next I'm
- 22:37going to pick up a stitch right from
- 22:39this pearl column. So, I'm going to
- 22:42stick my needle right in and grab a
- 22:45stitch. So, that's six. And then I'm
- 22:48going to grab a stitch from this knit
- 22:50column right at the top. So, I'm going
- 22:52to stick my needle right into that
- 22:54little Vshape of the knit stitch.
- 22:58And that's three, I think. Was that 1,
- 23:01two, three, and then I'm going to stick
- 23:04my needle into this pearl column right
- 23:07here?
- 23:09Four. And then next is this knit column
- 23:12here. So I'm going to stick my needle
- 23:14right into the V of that knit column.
- 23:16Drag out a stitch. And then I've got my
- 23:19column of pearl stitches. And you can
- 23:21barely see that. It's so invisible. But
- 23:24I'm going to try my best to stick my
- 23:25needle right into the top of the pearl
- 23:28column and drag out a stitch. And now
- 23:30I've got one stitch left and that is a
- 23:33salvage edge. So I'm going to stick my
- 23:35needle right into like two of the legs
- 23:39of the salvage edge and drag out drag
- 23:43out a stitch. There we go. Now I'm going
- 23:46to count up my stitches and see that I
- 23:48have 19 picked up. All right. So now
- 23:51I've picked up 19 stitches on my left
- 23:54edge. And now I'm going to turn my work
- 23:56over and we're going to work the setup
- 23:59row on the wrong side. We're going to
- 24:01start by doing our edge stitches. We're
- 24:03going to stick our needle in knitwise
- 24:06and then just slip it right off. And
- 24:09then we're going to do a knit one, pearl
- 24:11one three times. So I'm going to go knit
- 24:15one and pearl one. We're essentially
- 24:18just setting up our edge stitches again
- 24:20on the front.
- 24:22And then we're going to place a marker.
- 24:25So, I'm going to grab the stitch marker
- 24:27that I used to mark off my front
- 24:29stitches. And then I'm going to place
- 24:32the stitch marker on my needle. And then
- 24:35we're going to pearl to end. So, I'm
- 24:37going to bring my yarn up front and then
- 24:39just pearl again. Just tightening up
- 24:42that first pearl stitch. And then we're
- 24:45just going to pearl to the end of the
- 24:48row. And this last stitch may be a
- 24:50little bit loose because it's not
- 24:53totally secure, right? So I can just
- 24:54pull that strand of yarn down, tighten
- 24:57up that last stitch. So that was our
- 24:59setup row. And now we'll turn our work
- 25:01over and work row one. So row one, we're
- 25:04just going to knit to the marker.
- 25:08We're at the marker now. So, we're going
- 25:11to do an SM, which means slip marker
- 25:14over to the right side. And then we're
- 25:16going to do a knit one, pearl one three
- 25:19times. These are our edge stitches. So,
- 25:21I'm going to do a tug after each stitch.
- 25:25Pearl that last stitch. Bring it to the
- 25:27back. Tighten it up. Great. So, let's
- 25:30turn our work over. And I'm going to
- 25:33slip one knitwise. Essentially working
- 25:35the edge stitches again. And then we're
- 25:38going to knit one and pearl one three
- 25:42times.
- 25:45SM. Slip the marker over. Bring the yarn
- 25:48up front and pearl to the end.
- 25:52Great. Now we're just going to repeat
- 25:54rows one to two until your piece
- 25:57measures 3.5 in for my size from the
- 26:00pickup row, which is right here. If you
- 26:03can see that. a lot of fitting later.
- 26:08>> It measures exactly 3 and 1/2 in from
- 26:11the point where we picked up stitches.
- 26:13That's what I need for my size. Make
- 26:15sure you have the length that you need
- 26:16for your size and then we can move on.
- 26:19So before when I was talking about
- 26:21making sure that the seven edge stitches
- 26:24align with the back stitches, this is
- 26:26really what I mean. So the front
- 26:28stitches where we picked up align with
- 26:30the back one by one rib. So that's why
- 26:33we took that extra effort to pick up
- 26:35right in the knits, right in the pearl
- 26:37stitches when we were picking up around
- 26:38the edge stitches.
- 26:43So we're on the right side row. We're
- 26:46going to start by doing a knit two and
- 26:49then we're going to do an M1L. For an
- 26:51M1L, we're going to pick up this little
- 26:53strand of yarn between the two stitches
- 26:56from the front. Okay? So the left needle
- 26:59swings to the front, picks up that
- 27:01little bar between the two stitches, and
- 27:04then my right needle is just going to
- 27:06insert through the back. Okay, so we're
- 27:08knitting through the back loop, and just
- 27:10pull out a knit stitch. And there we go.
- 27:12That is an M1L. Then we're just going to
- 27:16knit to the marker. And then we'll slip
- 27:18the marker and work the edge stitches.
- 27:20And that will be it for our increase
- 27:22row.
- 27:24at the marker. So, I'm going to slip the
- 27:26marker over and then we'll work the edge
- 27:29stitches, which is just a knit one,
- 27:31pearl one.
- 27:34So, we have increased by one stitch
- 27:36right here. All right, so let's turn our
- 27:39work over and work the even row. So, the
- 27:42even row is really simple. We're just
- 27:44going to work the edge stitches. So slip
- 27:47one, knitwise, and then we're going to
- 27:49do a knit one, pearl one, slip our
- 27:52marker over, and then we're just going
- 27:54to pearl all the way to the end. And
- 27:57that is our even row. Now, our
- 28:00instructions say that we're going to
- 28:01repeat row and even row 10 9 13 9 7 more
- 28:07times depending on your size. And let's
- 28:09just chart these next increase rows. So
- 28:13for my size, I'm going to work increase
- 28:15row and even row 13 more times. I'm
- 28:18going to just chart out 13. So go ahead
- 28:21and repeat your increase row and your
- 28:23even row the number of times you need
- 28:26for your size. All right. So now I
- 28:28filled up my little chart of neck
- 28:30increases. There's a nice curve that
- 28:32appears here, which is going to be our
- 28:35neckline. Okay. So, if you have the
- 28:37number of stitches that you need and
- 28:38your left front looks something like
- 28:40this, then we're ready to move on. Now,
- 28:43for size 6, 7, 8, and 9, you're going to
- 28:45be working another increase row where
- 28:48you increase at the neckline and at the
- 28:50armhole. So, if you're working size 6,
- 28:527, 8, or 9, then let's move on to this
- 28:55next increase row. So, we start off very
- 28:58similar to our neckline increase where
- 29:01we do a knit two and then you're going
- 29:04to do an M1L. So, I'm going to do Here
- 29:08we go. Just lift that strand of yarn up
- 29:10and then do an M1 L. And then you're
- 29:14going to knit to the marker. So, we're
- 29:17going to knit all the way to this
- 29:18marker.
- 29:22All right. So now I've reached the
- 29:24marker and I'm going to do an M1R. So
- 29:27I'm just going to lift that strand of
- 29:29yarn in between the two stitches from
- 29:31the back to the front. Knit into that
- 29:34strand of yarn from the front. There we
- 29:37go. And that's our M1R. Now I'll slip
- 29:40the stitch marker over and then just
- 29:42work those edge stitches as we normally
- 29:44do. So we're basically working increases
- 29:46at the neckline and at the armhole. So,
- 29:49if you're a size six or up, then these
- 29:52instructions are for you. All right. So,
- 29:54I've just completed my increase row.
- 29:56Now, I'm going to turn my work around
- 29:57and just work an even row where we do
- 30:00the edge stitches and then pearl to the
- 30:02end. So, if you're working a size six,
- 30:05you would just repeat this one more
- 30:06time. So, that would be your chart. If
- 30:09you are working size seven, you would do
- 30:11this five more times. So, you'd go 1 2 3
- 30:144 5. size eight, then you would do it
- 30:18seven more times. There you go. Six,
- 30:20seven. And if you're working a size
- 30:22nine, you would do this 10 more times. 8
- 30:259 and 10. So for size six and upwards,
- 30:28work the increase for the neck and
- 30:30armhole. And then make sure you have the
- 30:32stitch count that you need for your
- 30:34size. All right. So now that all the
- 30:36increases are done, we can move on in
- 30:37our pattern. So, we're going to break
- 30:39out some scrap yarn, thread up my
- 30:41tapestry needle, place these stitches
- 30:44onto my scrap yarn,
- 30:48and I'm moving the stitch marker over as
- 30:51well.
- 30:53There we go. Now, our stitches are being
- 30:55held on the scrap yarn. We're going to
- 30:58cut off the working yarn. We're going to
- 30:59leave 8 in or so and just cut that off.
- 31:05Now that we've knit the left front,
- 31:07we're going to do the same for the right
- 31:09side. We're going to pick up stitches at
- 31:11the edge here up to our little stitch
- 31:14marker. And then we're going to do the
- 31:15exact same thing, but just mirrored. So,
- 31:18let's move our tank top over here.
- 31:20Starting from where the edge stitches
- 31:22are, I'm going to pick up the number of
- 31:24stitches I need for my size. And for my
- 31:27size, I need 19 stitches. And I'm just
- 31:29going to go in right at the very edge,
- 31:33stick my needle in with the working
- 31:35yarn. I will just
- 31:37loop it around my needle and pull out a
- 31:42stitch. Okay, so that's my first stitch
- 31:44that I've picked up and knit. And now
- 31:47I'm going to just follow the edge
- 31:49stitches by going into a pearl column
- 31:53here. So, I'm going to stick my needle
- 31:55in, grab my working yarn, loop it around
- 31:58the needle, and drag out a stitch. And
- 32:01now, I'm going to look at this knit
- 32:03column right here, and I'm going to stab
- 32:06my needle right into that little V, that
- 32:08upside down V. Pull out a stitch. Great.
- 32:13Okay. And now I'm going to go into this
- 32:15pearl column. I'm going to stab my
- 32:17needle right into the top of that pearl
- 32:18column, and then drag out a stitch from
- 32:22that. another knit column right here.
- 32:25So, it's an upside down V. I'm just
- 32:27going to stick my needle right into that
- 32:30upside down V. Wrap my yarn around and
- 32:33drag out a stitch. And then I've got
- 32:35this last pearl column. So, I'm going to
- 32:38stick my needle into the top of that
- 32:40pearl column. Drag out a stitch. And
- 32:43then now we have six stitches that we've
- 32:46picked up. We're going to pick up a knit
- 32:48stitch. So, I'm going to stick my needle
- 32:49right into the top of the caston.
- 32:53Drag out a stitch. There we go. There's
- 32:56seven. And now from here, I'm just going
- 32:58to pick up the remaining stitches to our
- 33:01stitch marker.
- 33:06So, now I've picked up 15, 16, 18, 19,
- 33:10and that's what I need for my size.
- 33:12Great. So, now we're ready to work the
- 33:14setup row. We are on the wrong side. And
- 33:18we're doing the same thing that we did
- 33:19when we worked our left front. We're
- 33:21going to pearl to the last seven
- 33:23stitches. So, I'm going to give a little
- 33:25tug and just pearl across these
- 33:27stitches.
- 33:30I've reached my last seven stitches. And
- 33:33I'm going to just do a PM. So, here's my
- 33:36stitch marker. We're going to place
- 33:37marker. And then I'm going to do a pearl
- 33:40one, knit one three times. So, here we
- 33:42go. Pearl. Give a tug. knit. Give a tug.
- 33:48And the last stitch, we're going to
- 33:50bring our yarn up front and do a pearl
- 33:52one. And that is our setup row. Now
- 33:55we'll turn the work around. And now
- 33:57we're on our right side. And we are
- 33:59going to basically work the edge
- 34:00stitches. And then we're going to knit
- 34:02to the end of the row.
- 34:07There we go. There's our last knit
- 34:09stitch. And now I'm going to turn my
- 34:11needle over and we're going to work our
- 34:13wrong side row, row two. And I'm just
- 34:16going to pearl the stitches here and
- 34:18then work the edge stitches. So we're
- 34:21just working even. Nothing is being
- 34:23increased or decreased. We're just kind
- 34:25of keeping the pattern that we have
- 34:27already set. We are now going to repeat
- 34:31rows one and two. Basically working even
- 34:34until your piece measures the
- 34:37measurement that you need for your size.
- 34:38So go ahead and do that and I'll meet
- 34:40you here for the neck shaping.
- 34:45So I want to show you how I join a new
- 34:47ball of yarn to my work. So here I'm
- 34:49nearly at the end of my yarn and I need
- 34:51to join a new ball of yarn to my
- 34:54knitting. I'm going to use my right
- 34:56needle and stick it into the next
- 34:58stitch. And then I'm going to take out
- 35:00my new ball of yarn. This is my new
- 35:02strand of yarn. And I'm just going to
- 35:04lay it over my old strand. So, with my
- 35:07old strand, I'm going to knit into the
- 35:10next stitch, just like this. And now,
- 35:13I'm just going to twist my new strand of
- 35:15yarn. This is my new strand of yarn. I'm
- 35:17going to twist it around the old strand.
- 35:23And now, you can see there's this little
- 35:25twist here. And I'm going to just
- 35:27continue knitting into the next stitch.
- 35:30I like to do this for cotton, linen,
- 35:32plant fiber yarns. Basically, when I
- 35:35can't do a split splice, this is how I
- 35:37like to join my yarn. There's a little
- 35:39twist at the back. So, that is what's
- 35:41holding my new yarn in place. And I can
- 35:44always pull these two strands of yarn to
- 35:46tighten it up to kind of get the tension
- 35:48right. And later on, I can always weave
- 35:50in these two strands of yarn into my
- 35:53knitting. My right front piece measures
- 35:563 and 1/2 in. That's what I need for my
- 35:58size. So when you've reached the
- 36:00measurement that you need for your size,
- 36:02we can then move on to the neck shaping.
- 36:07So let's work our increase row, which is
- 36:10the right side. So we're going to work
- 36:12our edge stitches to the marker, and
- 36:14then we're going to work to the last two
- 36:16stitches of our row, at which point we
- 36:19will do an M1R. So we're going to be
- 36:21increasing the neckline so that there is
- 36:24a nice gentle curve. All right, so let's
- 36:27work the edge stitches.
- 36:30And now we've reached our marker. So I'm
- 36:32going to slip my marker over. And then
- 36:34I'm just going to knit to the last two
- 36:36stitches.
- 36:39I'm on my last two stitches. And now I'm
- 36:42going to do an M1R just in one swoop
- 36:45like this. Picking up that strand of
- 36:47yarn. And then I'm going to use my right
- 36:49needle to just knit into that strand of
- 36:51yarn from the front and pull out a
- 36:54stitch. And that is my M1R. Then I'm
- 36:57going to knit two stitches. And that is
- 37:00the end of my row. And I have increased
- 37:03by one stitch. Turn my work over. And
- 37:05we're going to work the even row. And
- 37:07we're just going to pearl our stitches
- 37:11all the way to the marker at which point
- 37:14we will just work our edge stitches.
- 37:16Okay. So, very, very simple. My last
- 37:19stitch is always going to be a pearl
- 37:21stitch when we're working edge stitches.
- 37:23All right. So now we're just going to
- 37:25repeat the increase row and the even row
- 37:2810 9 13 9 7 four more times depending on
- 37:32your size. Once you've completed your
- 37:35repeats, do a stitch count. Make sure
- 37:37you have the number of stitches you need
- 37:38on your right front. Now if you are
- 37:41working size 6 7 8 or 9, then you're
- 37:44going to work the neck and armhole
- 37:46increases just like what you did for the
- 37:49left front. So, if you're working size
- 37:516, 7, 8, or 9, you are going to work the
- 37:54edge stitches. And then you're going to
- 37:56slip your marker. That's my little
- 37:58marker there. And then you're going to
- 38:00do an M1 L right here. And then you're
- 38:03going to just knit to your last two
- 38:06stitches, at which point you're going to
- 38:08do an M1R. And then you'll just knit the
- 38:11last two stitches. And that'll be that
- 38:13for your increase row. Turn your
- 38:14knitting around. You'll be on the wrong
- 38:16side of your work. And that is just
- 38:18going to be an even row. You're just
- 38:20going to pearl all the way to the
- 38:22marker, slip the marker, and then work
- 38:24those edge stitches. You're going to
- 38:26repeat your increase row and your even
- 38:28row either 1, 5, 7, or 10 more times.
- 38:32Okay? Depending on your size. It's the
- 38:34same number of increases as you did for
- 38:36your left front increases. Okay? So,
- 38:39these instructions are just for size 6,
- 38:427, 8, and 9. If you are working size 1
- 38:44to 5, you'll just ignore these
- 38:46instructions. So once everyone has
- 38:48finished their increases, we will move
- 38:49on to the next section where we join the
- 38:51right and the left fronts together. Very
- 38:54exciting.
- 38:57Next, what we're going to do is cast on
- 39:00some stitches to join both the right and
- 39:03the left front together. There's just a
- 39:05bit of space here, right? There's a gap.
- 39:06So, we need to add more stitches to join
- 39:08both pieces. So, I'm going to pick up my
- 39:11right front. And we're not cutting the
- 39:13yarn off for the right front. We're
- 39:15keeping the yarn intact. Okay. So, I'm
- 39:19going to just work the edge stitches on
- 39:22my right front.
- 39:25And then I'm going to slip the marker
- 39:28over. And then I'm going to do an M1L.
- 39:32So, I'm just going to pick up this
- 39:33strand of yarn from the front just like
- 39:36this. And then I'm going to do an M1L.
- 39:39Just knit into the back. There we go.
- 39:42There's our M1L. And then I'm going to
- 39:45knit to the end of the right front. So
- 39:47just all the way to the end of the row.
- 39:52There's my last stitch. So now we're
- 39:54actually going to cast on stitches for
- 39:57the center part of our neckline. For a
- 40:00backward loop caston, we're going to
- 40:02grab our working yarn and then just loop
- 40:05it around our finger. turn our finger to
- 40:09the left and then pick up that loop from
- 40:12our finger and drop it off. Okay. And
- 40:14then you can see that's one caston
- 40:16stitch, right? So, I'm going to do that
- 40:18again. I'll make my left hand into a gun
- 40:21shape, grab the yarn, just turn my hand
- 40:26to the left, and then pick up that loop
- 40:29from my finger. And then I can just pull
- 40:32down. Okay, here again. Finger goes
- 40:35underneath the yarn. Turn my finger to
- 40:38the left. Pick up that loop from my
- 40:40finger. Drop it off. And then pull down.
- 40:44Okay. Like this. Finger underneath the
- 40:47loop. Turn my hand to the left. Pick up
- 40:50that loop from my finger and then pull
- 40:53down. So that's a really simplified way
- 40:56of doing it. You can also just go like
- 40:58this
- 41:00and go a lot faster. Okay, that's one
- 41:03way to do a backward loop caston. So,
- 41:06I've cast on 18 stitches here, which is
- 41:09what I need for my size. And now I'm
- 41:11going to put these stitches back onto
- 41:14another needle because right now they
- 41:15are being held on my scrap yarn. So, I'm
- 41:18just going to put the stitches of my
- 41:20left front back onto my needle. So, now
- 41:24my left front is back on the needle and
- 41:27I can just pull the scrap yarn off. And
- 41:30now my left front stitches are back on
- 41:32the needle. I'm going to grab my working
- 41:34yarn and we're just going to knit across
- 41:36the left front stitches. We're going to
- 41:38knit across to the marker at which point
- 41:41we're going to do an M1R. So, I'm going
- 41:44to make sure that these stitches are not
- 41:45twisted, these center stitches, as in
- 41:47they're not like literally have a twist
- 41:49here. Make sure that they are nicely
- 41:51untwisted. And now I'm going to knit
- 41:53into that first stitch on my left front.
- 41:55I'm going to hold on to the yarn there
- 41:56so it doesn't, you know, have a big gap.
- 42:00There we go. And we're just knitting
- 42:02across
- 42:04these left front stitches. And now we
- 42:07are at the stitch marker. So we're going
- 42:09to do an M1R and then go from the back
- 42:13to the front just like this. And then
- 42:15I'm going to knit into that strand of
- 42:18yarn from the front. And there we go.
- 42:20That's our M1R. Then I'm going to slip
- 42:22my marker over. And then we're just
- 42:24going to work those edge stitches. Now I
- 42:27have successfully joined my right front
- 42:30and my left front together. And it's
- 42:32joined together by these little caston
- 42:35stitches. So if you see them getting a
- 42:37little loose, you can just pull down on
- 42:38this strand of yarn. This is the
- 42:40leftover yarn from our left front. So
- 42:43now we are going to work the wrong side
- 42:45row. We're just going to turn our
- 42:47knitting over. So we're just going to
- 42:49work the edge stitches and then pearl,
- 42:51pearl, pearl all the way to this marker
- 42:54here and work the edge stitches. And
- 42:56that is basically our even row. So as
- 42:59you get to these center stitches which
- 43:01we cast on, just be really careful as
- 43:04you pearl them because they could easily
- 43:06just fall off the needle. So just work
- 43:08them very carefully. I'm actually
- 43:10tightening them up as I pearl them. So I
- 43:14bring the yarn to the back and just
- 43:15tighten them. So here is my last stitch.
- 43:19I'm going to slip the marker over and
- 43:22then work those edge stitches. Here's
- 43:28my last stitch, and that's going to be a
- 43:30pearl. Great. So, I have now just knit
- 43:33one row even. And for sizes 1, 3, and
- 43:38four, you're going to work more even
- 43:40rows. For sizes 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9,
- 43:43you'll move on to the next step, which
- 43:44is shaping the arm holes. So, an even
- 43:47row just means you're working the edge
- 43:48stitches. And if you're on the right
- 43:49side, you're knitting this section and
- 43:52then working the edge stitches. If
- 43:54you're on the wrong side, then you're
- 43:56going to be working the edge stitches,
- 43:58pearling across, and then working the
- 44:00edge stitches. For size one, you'll knit
- 44:02four more even rows. For size three and
- 44:04four, you'll work two more even rows.
- 44:07Then you'll move on to the next step
- 44:08with everyone else, which is shaping the
- 44:10arm holes.
- 44:13We're going to add increases on both
- 44:16sides of the front right by the stitch
- 44:20markers so that we have like a nice
- 44:22curve along the armhole. So, if you've
- 44:25read through your instructions and
- 44:26you're still a little bit confused, let
- 44:28me break it down for you. When you're
- 44:29working increases, you're always going
- 44:31to increase on the right side of the
- 44:34row. And when you're on the wrong side
- 44:36of the row, the pearl side, you're
- 44:37always going to pearl and nothing will
- 44:40be increased or decreased. So increases
- 44:42always happen on the right side of the
- 44:44row. All right. So with that in mind,
- 44:46for the shaping of the armhole, if
- 44:48you're working size one to four, you're
- 44:51going to work one increase row on your
- 44:53right side. And that would be your row
- 44:55one. Your even row is just going to be
- 44:58work the edge stitches, slip the marker,
- 45:00pearl, pearl, pearl, pearl all the way
- 45:02to the other marker, slip that, and work
- 45:05the edge stitches. That's it. That's all
- 45:07we mean by work an even row. So an even
- 45:10row can be a pearl row where you're on
- 45:12the wrong side and you're pearling the
- 45:14body of the work. Or it can be on the
- 45:15right side row where you're just
- 45:17knitting the work, right? But you're not
- 45:19increasing. You're keeping the stitches
- 45:21even. So for size one to four, you would
- 45:23work one increase row, then three even
- 45:26rows, and then you would repeat one
- 45:29increase row and three even rows. One
- 45:31more time if you're working a size 1, 2,
- 45:33or three, and zero times if you're
- 45:36working a size four. So, if you're
- 45:37working a size four, you only do one
- 45:39increase row and three even rows once.
- 45:41If you are working size 5 to 9, you
- 45:43would ignore these instructions. Don't
- 45:45even look at them. If you're working
- 45:47those sizes, you would just move on to
- 45:50the next instructions, which is for size
- 45:522 to 9 only. All right? So, if you're
- 45:55working size 2 to 9, then you would move
- 45:57on to these instructions here. You would
- 45:59work one increase row and then work one
- 46:01even row. And then you would just repeat
- 46:03rows one to two one time. if you're a
- 46:06size two, zero more times if you're size
- 46:09three, two more times if you're a size
- 46:11four, five more times if you're a size
- 46:13five, and on and on, okay? Based on your
- 46:15size,
- 46:19our tank top is really starting to take
- 46:21shape. So, now we're actually going to
- 46:22join the front piece with the back
- 46:25piece. So, we're going to start by
- 46:27working across the front stitches. We're
- 46:29going to do a knit one through the back
- 46:32loop. So, I'm just going to stick my
- 46:34needle into the back loop of the first
- 46:36stitch. So, I'm not going in like this
- 46:39as you normally do when you're knitting.
- 46:40I'm going into the back of the loop. And
- 46:44I'm just going to knit that up. And we
- 46:47do this just to tighten up that first
- 46:49salvage stitch. Now, we're going to work
- 46:51the edge stitches to the marker, which
- 46:53is what we have been doing all along.
- 46:56So, basically just a knit one, pearl
- 46:58one, following the edge stitches. And
- 47:02here we go. Now we're at the marker. And
- 47:04I'm going to slip the marker over. And
- 47:06then we're just going to knit to the
- 47:09second marker. Just knitting, knitting,
- 47:11knitting to this second marker. All
- 47:14right. So, I've just knit to this second
- 47:17marker. And now I'm going to slip the
- 47:20stitch marker over. And then we're going
- 47:22to work the edge stitches to the last
- 47:25stitch.
- 47:27And now we've reached the last stitch.
- 47:30And we're going to do again a knit one
- 47:32through the back loop. So I'm not going
- 47:34like this as if to knit. I'm going into
- 47:37the back of that knit stitch and pulling
- 47:40out a stitch thereby tightening up that
- 47:42last salvage stitch. All right. Now we
- 47:45are going to cast on some stitches. And
- 47:47these stitches are going to sit at the
- 47:49underarm which just gives our tank top a
- 47:52little bit of breathing room around the
- 47:53underarm and it adds more width to the
- 47:56bust area. So, if you are knitting size
- 47:581 to 5, you're going to cast on three
- 48:00stitches. If you are knitting larger
- 48:02sizes, you'll cast on 5, 7, 9, or 11
- 48:05stitches. Now, there are two ways that
- 48:08you can cast on stitches as we did with
- 48:10our neckline. You can use a backward
- 48:13loop caston. So, you can do this. Just
- 48:15go 1 2 3 like that. Cast on three
- 48:19stitches. Or you can use the cable
- 48:22caston. Now, my preference for the
- 48:24underarm is to use the cable caston
- 48:26because I think it's a sturdier caston.
- 48:29I'm going to turn my knitting to the
- 48:30wrong side. You can see the pearls here.
- 48:33And I'm just going to stick my needle in
- 48:35between these two stitches.
- 48:38So, there we go. Just like that. My
- 48:40needle is in between. And then I'm going
- 48:42to loop my yarn around, pull out a
- 48:45stitch, and then twist my left needle
- 48:48and pick it up from the front. There we
- 48:50go. There's one. I'm going to do that
- 48:52again. Stick my needle in between these
- 48:54two stitches. Wrap my yarn around the
- 48:57needle. Drag out a stitch. And then with
- 49:00my left needle, pick it up from the
- 49:01front. That's two. And then stick my
- 49:04needle in again between the two
- 49:06stitches. Wrap my yarn around, drag a
- 49:10loop through, and then pick it up from
- 49:13the front. Okay. So now I've just cast
- 49:16on three stitches, which is what I need
- 49:18for my size. So, I'm going to turn my
- 49:20needle over back to the right side. Now,
- 49:24we can work across our back stitches.
- 49:27Now, our back stitches are on the scrap
- 49:31yarn. So, I actually need to place these
- 49:34back stitches onto the other end of my
- 49:37circular needle. And I'm just going to
- 49:39go in from this end
- 49:43so that we would be ready to work the
- 49:45back stitches with the front. I'm gonna
- 49:48slowly pick up these stitches. And I'm
- 49:51picking up the stitch marker as well.
- 49:56There we go. All right. So, now all of
- 49:58my back stitches have been picked up on
- 50:01my needle and I can just pull this scrap
- 50:04yarn loose. So, my scrap yarn is off.
- 50:07So, my front stitches are on my right
- 50:10needle and my back stitches are on my
- 50:13left needle. And now I am ready to join
- 50:16them in the round. All right. So now I'm
- 50:18going to knit into the back stitches
- 50:20which is on my left needle. So I'm going
- 50:23to do a knit one through the back loop.
- 50:26So again, we're not going into the front
- 50:28like this. We're going into the back of
- 50:31the stitch. And this stitch is quite
- 50:34loose because we cut the yarn off. I'm
- 50:36just going to hold on to that just to
- 50:38keep that first stitch kind of tight. So
- 50:41I'm going to knit into the back of the
- 50:42stitch. knit into the back and then just
- 50:45drag a stitch out. And great, now we
- 50:48have joined the back to the front. So
- 50:51now we're just going to work the edge
- 50:52stitches to the marker. So I'm going to
- 50:55just follow that one by one rib. And
- 50:58here's my last edge stitch. And I'm
- 51:01going to slip the marker over. And then
- 51:04I'm just going to knit doo across the
- 51:06back stitches until we get to the last
- 51:09marker on the back stitches. Now I'm at
- 51:12the marker and I'm going to slip the
- 51:14marker over and we're going to work the
- 51:16edge stitches to the last stitch.
- 51:20Now I'm at the last stitch of the back
- 51:23and I'm going to knit through the back
- 51:26loop. Just like that. All right, great.
- 51:29Now we're going to cast on stitches for
- 51:31the underarm. We did that earlier. So
- 51:34I'm going to do a cable caston again.
- 51:37So, I'm going to use my needle and just
- 51:40stick it in between these first two
- 51:42stitches. Wrap my yarn around, twist,
- 51:45and grab the stitch from the front.
- 51:48Let's do that again. Drag out a loop and
- 51:52place it onto my left needle.
- 51:56And do that one more time.
- 51:59There we go. And that is three. So for
- 52:03you, you may cast on more stitches
- 52:05depending on what size you are knitting.
- 52:08Okay. So let's turn back to the right
- 52:10side. All right. So now we are ready to
- 52:12join in the round. So before you join in
- 52:15the round, make sure that your right
- 52:17side is all facing the outside. So when
- 52:20you look at your knitting, just make
- 52:21sure that this is the right side that's
- 52:23facing you all the way around. Don't
- 52:25want to twist our tank top. I'm going to
- 52:28grab a new stitch marker. So, I like to
- 52:30use a different color to mark the
- 52:32beginning of the round. We've got a lot
- 52:34of stitch markers going on here. I want
- 52:36a more colorful one to signify the
- 52:39beginning of the round. And then I'm
- 52:40going to knit one through the back loop.
- 52:44And give it a little tug. And now I am
- 52:46joined in the round. How amazing. All
- 52:49right. So, we're going to work the edge
- 52:51stitches to the marker.
- 52:54And I'm going to slip the stitch marker
- 52:57over. And then we're just going to knit
- 53:00to the marker. So we're just knitting
- 53:02all the way across the front stitches
- 53:05doo all the way to this stitch marker.
- 53:08So we've reached the stitch marker here.
- 53:10And now we're going to slip the stitch
- 53:12marker over. And we're going to do a
- 53:14knit one, pearl one three times.
- 53:19Knit one and pearl one. And that is
- 53:23three. Now we're going to knit one
- 53:26through the back loop. So again, we're
- 53:28not going up like this. We are going
- 53:30through the back loop and knitting one.
- 53:33Now we're going to pearl one. So let's
- 53:36bring the yarn up and pearl one. These
- 53:38are the caston stitches for the underarm
- 53:41that we cast on. And then I'm going to
- 53:43do a knit one
- 53:47and a pearl one. And you're going to do
- 53:50a knit one, pearl one again a few more
- 53:53times depending on your size. If you're
- 53:55working a six, seven, eight, or nine,
- 53:57you will repeat the knit one, pearl one
- 54:002, 3, four, or five times. For my size,
- 54:03I've already just repeated it once. And
- 54:05now I'm going to do a knit one through
- 54:08the back loop. Yes, there we go. Knit
- 54:12one through the back loop. And then I'm
- 54:14going to do a pearl one, knit one three
- 54:16times. And you're going to do that
- 54:18whatever size you are knitting.
- 54:21And a knit one. And now we have reached
- 54:24the marker. So we're going to slip the
- 54:26marker over. And then we're going to
- 54:29knit to the next marker. And now we are
- 54:34on the back of the tank top. So we're
- 54:37going to knit across the back to the
- 54:40next marker here. Okay. So just a whole
- 54:43lot of knitting. Slip the marker over.
- 54:46And then we're going to do a knit one,
- 54:48pearl one three times.
- 54:51Pearl one, that's three. And then I'm
- 54:56going to do a knit one through the back
- 54:58loop.
- 55:00And then we're going to do a pearl one.
- 55:03These are my last three stitches that I
- 55:06cast on for the underarm. So let's be
- 55:08careful with that. Pearl one and knit
- 55:12one.
- 55:15Knit one. And here's my last stitch.
- 55:18Pearl one. If you're working the larger
- 55:20sizes, you would repeat that knit one,
- 55:22pearl one either two, three, four, or
- 55:24five more times. For my size, I am done
- 55:27this round. So, we're going to start
- 55:30with a knit one. Here we go. Knit one.
- 55:34And then you're going to do a pearl one
- 55:37and a knit one. And you're going to
- 55:40repeat that until you get to the marker.
- 55:43And once you get to the marker, we're
- 55:44going to slip the marker. And then
- 55:46you're just going to knit across to the
- 55:50next marker D until you get to the
- 55:53marker here. Let's work our knit
- 55:55stitches across the front of the tank
- 55:57top. So now we've reached this next
- 56:00marker. So I'm going to slip it over to
- 56:02the right needle. There we go. And we're
- 56:05going to work the instructions all over
- 56:06again. I'm going to go do a knit stitch.
- 56:09Here we go. And then I'm going to do a
- 56:12pearl one
- 56:15and a knit one. And I'm going to repeat
- 56:17that until I get to this next marker
- 56:21over here.
- 56:24Slip the marker. And then I'm going to
- 56:26knit to the next marker. And my next
- 56:29marker is all the way across the back
- 56:33stitches. D all the way over here. Okay.
- 56:37So, we're just essentially knitting
- 56:39across the back. So, I've reached the
- 56:42next marker here. So, I'm going to slip
- 56:44the marker over. And now I'm ready to
- 56:46work the last bit of this round. I'm
- 56:49going to do a knit one and a pearl one.
- 56:52And then we're just going to repeat that
- 56:54to the end of the round. All right. So,
- 56:57now we're at the end of row one. And now
- 57:00you're just going to repeat row one
- 57:02until your tank top measures 8.75 9 in
- 57:07or 9.25 in from this underarm area. From
- 57:12here on out or until your piece is 2 in
- 57:16less than however long you want the tank
- 57:18top to be.
