- 0:00all right so first when talking about
- 0:02improving vocal resonance we have to
- 0:04discuss what is the definition of vocal
- 0:14resonance
- 0:16is a term that describes where the sound
- 0:19is
- 0:19vibrating so we're talking about
- 0:21vibration now there's a lot of
- 0:22places where we can feel the voice
- 0:25vibrating we can feel it in our chest we
- 0:26can feel it in our mouth in our hard
- 0:28palate and our soft palate we can feel
- 0:30it up in the nasal cavities into the
- 0:32head
- 0:33so our locale of vibration is very
- 0:36important when it comes to the voice
- 0:37because i could
- 0:38sing or talk kind of like this where
- 0:40it's far back in my throat or
- 0:42even down here where it's got it right
- 0:44in my throat or i can bring my
- 0:46tone forward into what we call the mask
- 0:49so that's like feeling the vibration
- 0:51right over here in the front of the face
- 0:53that really helps bring the sound
- 0:56forward
- 0:56and gives it a bright resonant quality
- 0:59so
- 1:00that is really what we're talking about
- 1:01when we're talking about improving the
- 1:03resonance we're talking about finding a
- 1:05quality that is pleasing
- 1:07and that carries when it comes to
- 1:08singing so that you don't have to work
- 1:10so hard
- 1:11to make the sound project so now that
- 1:13you understand what resonance is it's
- 1:14important to identify
- 1:16what is your resonance pattern and how
- 1:18do you go about producing resonance
- 1:20so resonance occurs whether you're
- 1:23singing or talking
- 1:24so i want to do this on two steps first
- 1:26we're going to talk
- 1:27see what the resonance is there then
- 1:29we're going to sing and we're going to
- 1:30use the tool
- 1:31of recording so then that way we can
- 1:33have more of an objective idea of what
- 1:35our voice is sounding like alright so
- 1:37pull out your phone right now and i want
- 1:38you to record yourself speaking out this
- 1:40phrase
- 1:41oh say can you see by the dawn's early
- 1:44light so we just want to
- 1:45record that now i want you to play back
- 1:47and listen to that
- 1:48notice where do you feel the sound is
- 1:50coming from does it sound
- 1:52oh say can you see or does it sound oh
- 1:55say can you see
- 1:56or does it sound like oh say can you see
- 1:58where is your
- 1:59kind of locale of vibration happening
- 2:02where is the resonance occurring
- 2:03also while you're doing it try to
- 2:06visualize
- 2:07what that feels like in your body right
- 2:09so we're going to also
- 2:10feel the resonance and that's an
- 2:13important
- 2:13tool that we can use to then get the
- 2:15correct sort of resonance when we're
- 2:17singing
- 2:18now what we're going to do is we're
- 2:19going to record it and we're actually
- 2:21going to sing it this
- 2:22time so hit record and sing oh
- 2:25say can you see
- 2:29by the dawn's early light
- 2:33okay that's all i want you to do for now
- 2:35is i want you to
- 2:36focus in on the spoken and the song and
- 2:39i want you to now listen back to those
- 2:41two
- 2:42options and i want you to hear what is
- 2:43the difference between your spoken
- 2:45version
- 2:46and your sung version for most of you
- 2:48what you're going to notice about your
- 2:50spoken version
- 2:51is that there's going to be a lot of
- 2:52forward resonance a lot of us
- 2:54speak and communicate with very forward
- 2:56resonance because we're trying to convey
- 2:58a message
- 2:59we really want the sound to project as
- 3:01far as possible
- 3:02and so a lot of people will have a very
- 3:04forward tone
- 3:05but if you're tend towards mumbling or
- 3:08you have
- 3:09an overly squeezed type of don't or a
- 3:11squeeze type it down like this
- 3:12there's different ways to squeeze the
- 3:14tone but that will also come out in your
- 3:16speaking if that is your tendency so try
- 3:18to notice what's happening there
- 3:20also notice what happens with your
- 3:21resonance as you're singing the line
- 3:24does it change does it shift at all from
- 3:27that spoken piece to the song piece if
- 3:30you want to sing with more confidence
- 3:31and power then you have to sign up for
- 3:33my lesson subscription
- 3:35you get two group lessons with me
- 3:36personally every single week you get
- 3:38access to all my courses and you get
- 3:40access to recordings of all my
- 3:42one-on-one lessons with my students
- 3:44that will help you learn vicariously
- 3:46through them click the link down below
- 3:49to sign up now
- 3:50now remember in this first step our only
- 3:53job is to notice what is happening so
- 3:55we're not actually manipulating or
- 3:57changing anything just yet but we just
- 3:59want to notice
- 4:00what is the process and how are we using
- 4:03our voice when it comes to resonance all
- 4:05right so now that you've noticed what
- 4:06your tendencies are we're going to jump
- 4:08into some
- 4:09exercises that are going to help to
- 4:11isolate
- 4:12specific types of resonance and they're
- 4:14gonna help you
- 4:15balance out your resonance and find more
- 4:18of an
- 4:18ease throughout your singing voice so
- 4:21first one we're gonna do
- 4:22is an ng sound as in the word sing so at
- 4:25the end of the word sing
- 4:27we're going to hold that ng sound just
- 4:29make sure that the back of your tongue
- 4:31meets the soft palate and we don't want
- 4:34to tense up the front of the tongue so
- 4:36the back of the tongue is going to be
- 4:37doing all the work the front of the
- 4:38tongue is going to stay very relaxed
- 4:39we're just going to go again
- 4:40sing and just hold that out
- 4:44now we're gonna put that on the melody
- 4:47[Music]
- 4:52[Laughter]
- 4:54itself
- 4:56and try to notice here where we're
- 4:58isolating just our nasal resonance
- 5:00what happens to the tone does it sound
- 5:02overly nasal now
- 5:04here we want it to sound overly nasal
- 5:06because when we add the mouth back
- 5:08into the picture we're going to get much
- 5:10more of a resonant tone so i'll show you
- 5:12what that
- 5:12sounds like so if i go it sounds really
- 5:15nasal
- 5:16but then when i drop my tongue i'm not
- 5:18actually shifting the resonance
- 5:19it's just we're getting an additional
- 5:21resonance chamber which is your mouth
- 5:23into the picture so we're going to go
- 5:31and so there it doesn't sound nearly as
- 5:33nasal on the ah
- 5:34as it does on the ng it's just because
- 5:36we're isolating that specific spot so
- 5:39that we can really
- 5:39hone in and fix that area so that's what
- 5:42i want you to do don't let it be
- 5:44a lot of people have the tendency to let
- 5:47it fall back don't do that we want to
- 5:48try to find it forward
- 5:49feel the resonance as much as possible
- 5:51right here in the front of the face
- 5:59[Music]
- 6:01[Laughter]
- 6:03good now i want you to record this next
- 6:05part we're going to record ourselves
- 6:07doing that again
- 6:08we're going to do it double we're going
- 6:10to do first on the ng then on the words
- 6:12and see if the words sound a little bit
- 6:14different than that first recording you
- 6:15made so we're going to record
- 6:27oh say can you
- 6:30see by the dawn's early
- 6:35light now i want you to play back
- 6:38the very first song piece and play back
- 6:41that last song piece and see if there is
- 6:43any difference there what about the
- 6:45exercise was able to bring out more of
- 6:47that forward resonance and
- 6:49see if that improves it the next
- 6:51exercise is going to also
- 6:52focus in on bringing out a little bit
- 6:54more of that brighter quality in the
- 6:56voice but here we're actually opening
- 6:58the mouth the main keys to focus on here
- 7:00is number one bringing the tongue all
- 7:02the way down as close to the chin as
- 7:04possible
- 7:05number two making sure the upper teeth
- 7:07are showing that's going to engage your
- 7:09zygomatic muscles
- 7:10bring them up and that's important for
- 7:12finding this bright quality to the voice
- 7:14finally we want to focus in on a very
- 7:17whiny tone so we don't want this to
- 7:19sound normal we want it to sound really
- 7:22na na na na na little whiny kid
- 7:25style so what we're gonna do is stick
- 7:26the tongue out and we're gonna go try
- 7:30that
- 7:30now we're going to go into the melody
- 7:33[Music]
- 7:42now again i want you to pull out your
- 7:44recorder hit the record button
- 7:46and sing it again like that and we're
- 7:48gonna double it up this time so we're
- 7:49gonna go
- 8:00oh say can you
- 8:03see by the dawn's early
- 8:08light and see what happens with your
- 8:11tone when you're singing
- 8:12there now play back the first option
- 8:15that we did without any exercise and
- 8:17that option see what's the difference
- 8:19now the final exercise we're going to
- 8:21run through is a
- 8:22great exercise for finding the resonance
- 8:25now this is
- 8:26all purely imagined so this is all in
- 8:28your head but what your mind does tells
- 8:30your vocal tract how to shape so what
- 8:32we're going to do is we're going to play
- 8:34around with two separate different types
- 8:36of resonance one that is lower so we're
- 8:38going to call that
- 8:39below the pen and then one that is
- 8:41higher kind of occurs a little bit
- 8:43higher
- 8:43in the body that one we're going to call
- 8:45above the pen so i've got a pen you can
- 8:47get a pencil you can get a straw
- 8:48whatever you want but we're going to
- 8:50bite down on the pen
- 8:51and we want to make sure first to put
- 8:53our resonance below
- 8:55the pen so we're going to go
- 9:02i feel my resonance kind of occurring
- 9:03here in my throat that's definitely
- 9:05below the pen so we want to focus in on
- 9:07that sort of resonance
- 9:08that is something that we're going to
- 9:10want to get away from we don't want to
- 9:11use that when we're singing because
- 9:12that's going to put too much pressure on
- 9:14the throat and it's going to sound a
- 9:16little bit
- 9:16dull and dopey so what we want to do is
- 9:18bring that
- 9:19up now and we're going to try to put it
- 9:21above the pen so thinking and then it's
- 9:23all in our imagination we're going to
- 9:24imagine over the pen
- 9:31this is going to help you bring your
- 9:32resonance forward now you could do this
- 9:34without a pen
- 9:35but what the pen does is it helps to
- 9:37give us a focal point on where
- 9:39we're placing the voice up or down and
- 9:42play with both of those
- 9:43now we're going to try to put it into
- 9:46the melody so we're going to go
- 9:56[Laughter]
- 9:59now it's important to note that with
- 10:01something foreign in your mouth you're
- 10:03going to
- 10:04have the tendency to want to retract
- 10:05your tongue so you're going to want to
- 10:07pull back on your tongue
- 10:08try to avoid that make sure that your
- 10:09tongue touches the pen the entire time
- 10:11as you do this exercise that will help
- 10:13avoid
- 10:14any sort of pullback or retraction on
- 10:16the tongue and make sure that it's
- 10:18placed optimally so now that we've got
- 10:20that we're going to
- 10:21try to do it double we're going to go
- 10:35oh say can you
- 10:38see by the dawn's early
- 10:44light so i'm making sure to always
- 10:47keep that resonance even as i'm singing
- 10:49it when i take away the pencil
- 10:51i'm still focusing on keeping that
- 10:53upward resonance as opposed to
- 10:54oh say being falling back down there
- 10:58i forgot to mention that you should
- 11:00record that last one and when you're
- 11:02done recording it play back that first
- 11:04take that we did and then play back
- 11:06after doing the pen exercise and see
- 11:09what the difference is now this is just
- 11:11going to help to focus that resonance
- 11:13higher up and you're gonna probably
- 11:15notice
- 11:16a slight difference in the way that
- 11:17you're producing the sound or even a
- 11:19bigger difference now
- 11:20let me know in the comments down below
- 11:21which exercise did you find
- 11:23actually brought out more of that upward
- 11:26resonance more into the face into the
- 11:28mask
- 11:28and also which of them produce the best
- 11:30recording afterwards and what i want you
- 11:32to do now
- 11:33is take that and apply it to any songs
- 11:36that you're working on so this doesn't
- 11:37obviously just work on the only one that
- 11:39we were trying we're just trying
- 11:40something that's simple but you're
- 11:41welcome to try
- 11:42any of these exercises with any melody
- 11:45that you're working with it'll really
- 11:46help you
- 11:47start to apply these principles of
- 11:49resonance and proper resonance placement
- 11:51to the songs that you're singing that's
- 11:53how you're going to see the biggest
- 11:54difference in your voice so i hope you
