  1. 0:00Dr. Powers, how can you help someone
  2. 0:02struggling with addiction that does not
  3. 0:04want help?
  4. 0:05There's a technique that we use called
  5. 0:06motivational interviewing. And in short,
  6. 0:09it's a way to help people come up with
  7. 0:11the reasons to quit on their own. Now,
  8. 0:14it's not something I can explain to you
  9. 0:15in the next 30 seconds. Suffice it to
  10. 0:17say that it is free of judgment. It's a
  11. 0:20way to sort of elicit why people are
  12. 0:22doing things that they're doing. Now, it
  13. 0:24might be harmful, but there's also a
  14. 0:26gain. So, if you get people to voice
  15. 0:28both the benefits they're getting and to
  16. 0:30voice the negative consequences that are
  17. 0:33resulting, they can start to formulate
  18. 0:35internal motivation to change. And
  19. 0:37that's something we're really good at is
  20. 0:38helping people change. So, if you or a
