- 0:15minute hey everybody welcome back again
- 0:17to Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy where the
- 0:19proof is in the singing I get asked this
- 0:22a lot how do I grow my head voice well
- 0:26um head voice actually by definition
- 0:29might mean a lot of different things to
- 0:30a lot of different people now I've
- 0:32discussed this before and I do have
- 0:34other videos out on headvoice but I want
- 0:36to make this really simple and precise
- 0:39and concise okay first of all the old
- 0:43operatic style of singing called
- 0:45belcanto refers to head voice as
- 0:48anything that resonates in the head so
- 0:51when pavati sings n Dorma and he's
- 0:54going and he's in the big note at the
- 0:56end um that would be considered
- 0:59headvoice
- 1:00for the soprano her way up in the
- 1:02rafters and her
- 1:05singing you know for her that's
- 1:08headvoice in the early 70s in the
- 1:11Broadway era as it started started to
- 1:13kind of float around where these
- 1:14different definitions started to have a
- 1:16continental drift between the two um Bel
- 1:19early bonto and then sort of you know
- 1:21belting and all this stuff that came in
- 1:23in in in Broadway what that definition
- 1:26meant for the female voice was literally
- 1:30her falsetto I mean it really was
- 1:32interchangeable it was synonymous with
- 1:35falsetto um for the male tenor it still
- 1:38meant anything that resonated in the
- 1:40head and so there became this sort of
- 1:43weird conflict information battle that
- 1:46went back and forth of what headvoice
- 1:47really is so I like to think of
- 1:49headvoice personally for both the male
- 1:52and the female as your falsetto register
- 1:56now here's where it gets a little
- 1:58dicey when a guy is in his falsetta
- 2:01register if he hasn't built it yet we're
- 2:03going to talk about how to do it we'll
- 2:04do some exercises in a minute um it's
- 2:07usually very hooodie and
- 2:11fluty right and so that definition of
- 2:14head voice to me should just still be
- 2:15called falsetto okay now there's another
- 2:18term called reinforced falsetto and all
- 2:20these different you know things right
- 2:22now reinforced
- 2:25FAL right so that reinforced falsetto is
- 2:29more in alignment with a definition of
- 2:32what I like or would would determine as
- 2:34headvoice okay so reinforce faletto
- 2:37headvoice can be a little
- 2:38interchangeable now for the for the gals
- 2:40too even though they're in the rafters
- 2:43or something they may be hoodie and
- 2:47fluty they may have that sound and
- 2:49that's still just falsetto I wouldn't
- 2:51really refer to that as headvoice now
- 2:54head voice can take on a lot of
- 2:56different characteristics but for now
- 2:58what we want to do and and by by the way
- 3:00why is head voice important let's
- 3:01discuss that so we know what I like to
- 3:03call headvoice why is it important when
- 3:05you first build your chess voice your
- 3:07speaking register and your call out
- 3:10register it's called the call register
- 3:12or your belting register after you've
- 3:14built that it's important to build that
- 3:17first because it's the foundation that
- 3:19holds up the brightness and the power of
- 3:22your head voice okay now the difference
- 3:25between your chest voice and your head
- 3:28voice has this Mido thing that's called
- 3:32Segundo pagio or second passageway which
- 3:35is that register break uh uh that people
- 3:39have guys and girls mostly guys it's
- 3:40more pronounced in guys but it's this
- 3:43register break where we have something
- 3:44called mixed Voice or to mix your voice
- 3:47okay and that's a percentage of your
- 3:50chest voice and your head voice coming
- 3:53together to create one long seamless s
- 3:56and
- 4:01okay so we can actually connect chest
- 4:03and head and get a really big huge huge
- 4:06long powerful note with a lot of range
- 4:09but until you build your chess voice
- 4:11first please see my tutorials on this
- 4:13I've got a lot of things about building
- 4:15chess voice if you're interested you can
- 4:17go to Kent tampal academy.com I have an
- 4:20incredible course called how to sing
- 4:22better than anyone else um I have a 3.0
- 4:25course that walks you'll probably never
- 4:26finish it it's it's it's pretty involved
- 4:29or you can can start it real simple with
- 4:31my 30 minute singer course um and it'll
- 4:33walk you through the basics on how to
- 4:35build your chess voice the 3.0 streaming
- 4:37course goes all the way to the end on
- 4:39your head voice and combining the two
- 4:41and I have 1,800 tutorials on YouTube so
- 4:43you can kind of Google YouTube you know
- 4:45and figure that out and I have a free
- 4:46singing Forum by the way you can find it
- 4:48right here K voal academy uh back forums
- 4:51or or whatever or you can sign up for
- 4:53free with over 20,000 people in there
- 4:56all discussing how to get good at these
- 4:57different techniques so anyway back to
- 4:59the Head voice so once you built chest
- 5:01voice it's the foundation that holds up
- 5:03your head voice to help you to keep you
- 5:06from getting that hoodie fluty sound if
- 5:08that's not what you're looking for
- 5:09you're looking
- 5:12for that really belty powerful sound
- 5:15that you want to be able to connect
- 5:16chest with head through the pagio and
- 5:19your mix voice to create different
- 5:21variations of color in this sound or
- 5:24volume or air and breath now when we
- 5:27first start to build this this is very
- 5:30important we want to start with smaller
- 5:33sounds I like to choose e first cuz it's
- 5:36the smallest sound now in singing
- 5:39sometimes e and U could be the hardest
- 5:41vowels to sing in a song but as we're
- 5:44warming up and doing this for this
- 5:45application and this purpose we actually
- 5:48want to keep the sounds really really
- 5:49small so on an eval and this might be a
- 5:53little high for some of you guys and
- 5:54ladies um please I'm going to start at
- 5:57your register so guys this is up the oct
- 6:00so wait until I'll even tell you when to
- 6:02come in so ladies we're going to start
- 6:03with you and
- 6:05[Applause]
- 6:10you're now what I want you to do is to
- 6:12cut back the air as much as you can and
- 6:15get the brightest Timber that you can
- 6:17now what happens with a lot of people is
- 6:19they get frustrated and they want to
- 6:20sing loud right they want to go into the
- 6:23gym and they want to pick up big weights
- 6:24right away we don't want to do that
- 6:26because the equilibrium will break down
- 6:28and when that breaks down all you're
- 6:30doing is breaking down muscle structure
- 6:31you're not building it so we want to do
- 6:33both we want to break down enough to
- 6:34where we can wait a day come back do it
- 6:36again and build it back up to grow this
- 6:38area so that's called up here it's
- 6:40actually this note okay it's called
- 6:42that's called an fshp five
- 6:49so get the brightest Timber you can now
- 6:53I have coined a lot of phrases and that
- 6:56particular phrase is ping is King ping
- 7:01is King you want the least amount of air
- 7:03to pass across the cord so the cord has
- 7:06more tension in it you know your vocal
- 7:08fold so have more tension in it to stay
- 7:10bright on the sound so let's do the next
- 7:12[Music]
- 7:18one now the lower you go in your
- 7:21registration the harder it's going to be
- 7:23to get those cords to stay closed and to
- 7:26stay bright on the sound so the way you
- 7:28countermand that or overcome it is to
- 7:31back off the sound so you can stay
- 7:33bright because you want to keep that
- 7:35bright ping all the way to the bottom as
- 7:37much as you can without it sounding
- 7:39hooty or fluty or using too much
- 7:41[Music]
- 7:42[Applause]
- 7:47air okay now for some of you guys out
- 7:49there you might be able to join in about
- 7:51here
- 7:58[Music]
- 8:05see even in my lower registry as I'm
- 8:07going low it still sounds bright almost
- 8:10kind of like my chest
- 8:16voice keep the
- 8:23brightness okay so now if it if it
- 8:27bloats or is overblow with air it's
- 8:30going
- 8:31to On The Low End you don't want that
- 8:34you want to just go only as low as you
- 8:36can to keep it nice and bright and
- 8:38eventually you'll start to build that
- 8:39registration lower with this bright tone
- 8:42and then once once you're really good at
- 8:44it you'll be able to combine your chest
- 8:46with your head to go back and forth to
- 8:48to complete this uh big long powerful
- 8:50note now one more thing you can go
- 8:53through all the vowels that I just did
- 8:54but I'd recommend un staying e and U so
- 8:57let's go woo
- 9:01[Laughter]
- 9:03o
- 9:10w
- 9:16w
- 9:21[Music]
- 9:22wo wo
