  1. 0:04all right Caleb looks like we have the
  2. 0:07results from your interview let me tell
  3. 0:09you me and the entire team were
  4. 0:11extremely impressed with your
  5. 0:13capabilities really that's awesome that
  6. 0:16being said we came to the conclusion
  7. 0:20you're probably not the right fit for
  8. 0:23this role but we're very thankful for
  9. 0:26you applying and you can always apply
  10. 0:28again next year
  11. 0:30nice to meet you no no if only I used
  12. 0:39primp if I used I would have had
  13. 0:44unlimited interviews and I could have
  14. 0:47done it over over again for free until I
  15. 0:51was a master with primp you get paired
  16. 0:58with another individual and do mock
  17. 1:01interviews using real technical
  18. 1:03questions I'm sure I would have got that
  19. 1:06position if I used per amp beforehand
  20. 1:10what are you doing I'm doing a
  21. 1:12commercial obviously why I should have
  22. 1:18used Bram go tripe ramp out right now
  23. 1:25link in the description trust me I
  24. 1:30understand the pain when it comes to
  25. 1:31getting a coding job this video is just
  26. 1:33gonna be a couple tips that I use to get
  27. 1:35my first coding job and hopefully you
  28. 1:37can do the same it can be very
  29. 1:39frustrating though because it seems like
  30. 1:41even the entry-level beginner positions
  31. 1:44require more experience than you have oh
  32. 1:53hey wait this is perfect for me I got an
  33. 2:00A in sweet app building three years
  34. 2:03professional experience required what
  35. 2:10you may have some experience from school
  36. 2:12but now you want to take it to the next
  37. 2:14level maybe get a software engineering
  38. 2:15position so how exactly do you convince
  39. 2:18someone to hire you when you don't have
  40. 2:19any experience number one is to own the
  41. 2:21technical interview you can have lots of
  42. 2:23experience and skills but it all comes
  43. 2:26down to a very short interview whether
  44. 2:28or not you get a position so if you do
  45. 2:30everything else in this video but fail
  46. 2:32at this point you're not going to get a
  47. 2:34job very easily I have been turned down
  48. 2:35from jobs and I understand the pain and
  49. 2:38frustration it can cause the pride built
  50. 2:40up like how dare they turn me down
  51. 2:42because I can't code on a whiteboard
  52. 2:46fortunately there's a lot you can do to
  53. 2:48help with this the first one like
  54. 2:49mentioned earlier is to check out
  55. 2:51another resource would be cracking the
  56. 2:53coding interview I will put links to
  57. 2:55both of these resources in the
  58. 2:56description below the second way to get
  59. 2:58a job is to start small I feel like
  60. 3:01everybody has this pressure to be the
  61. 3:02lead senior distinguished engineer at
  62. 3:05Google why not just start
  63. 3:07with an internship or a junior level
  64. 3:10development position or if all of these
  65. 3:12even seem out of reach what I would
  66. 3:13recommend is a volunteer as a total newb
  67. 3:16a volunteer organization is more likely
  68. 3:18to let you tinker with their stuff and
  69. 3:21potentially break things that's because
  70. 3:23you know they're hurting for talent and
  71. 3:24they often don't have a lot of money to
  72. 3:26pay software engineers millions of
  73. 3:29dollars so why don't you go build a
  74. 3:30website for your local church or build a
  75. 3:32flashcard app for your high school
  76. 3:34anything you can do to get some
  77. 3:36experience and the main reason you want
  78. 3:38to do this is to build a portfolio which
  79. 3:40is actually the third way to get a job a
  80. 3:42portfolio is similar to a resume but
  81. 3:44it's often a little bit more in-depth
  82. 3:46and often it's built on a webpage so you
  83. 3:49could actually build a website to show
  84. 3:51your portfolio you could even have a
  85. 3:53github account with some open source
  86. 3:54projects that you've started or have
  87. 3:56worked on another good example of a
  88. 3:58portfolio would be to develop an iPhone
  89. 4:00app and just use that as an example of
  90. 4:03something you've built a portfolio could
  91. 4:05also consist of blogs on LinkedIn or on
  92. 4:07your own personal website and the final
  93. 4:09example of a portfolio I got is to
  94. 4:10actually build your social media
  95. 4:12presence so if you have a strong
  96. 4:14industry influence companies are more
  97. 4:16likely to recognize you for your
  98. 4:18technical expertise fourth way is to
  99. 4:20stand out and unfortunately technology
  100. 4:22companies have made this very difficult
  101. 4:24to do so if you apply for a position
  102. 4:26you're more than likely not going to
  103. 4:27have any contact you can reach out to to
  104. 4:30ask questions or just to say hi I'm a
  105. 4:33real person even if you call the company
  106. 4:35some time and just say hey I applied for
  107. 4:37this position could I talk to someone
  108. 4:39about it they'll be like no bye so you
  109. 4:43have to think a little bit more
  110. 4:43creatively on how to stand out and this
  111. 4:45is doing the obvious things like having
  112. 4:47a good cover letter or resume but also
  113. 4:50building that portfolio right so my
  114. 4:52portfolio was my YouTube channel and
  115. 4:54this allowed me to stand out from my
  116. 4:56peers my boss for my first coding job
  117. 4:58actually saw my YouTube channel and he
  118. 5:00understand that even if I didn't have
  119. 5:02expertise in one particular skill set I
  120. 5:05would be able to pick up the knowledge
  121. 5:07and learn so he offered me a position
  122. 5:09coming from a minimum wage job this was
  123. 5:12a really good offer even still I wasn't
  124. 5:14sure I wanted to take it until he kind
  125. 5:17of explained how much he was gonna pay
  126. 5:18me right so it went a little bit
  127. 5:20something like this
  128. 5:21I really appreciate the offer but I'm
  129. 5:23just not sure this job is for me no I
  130. 5:26totally understand we'll pay you 18
  131. 5:28bucks an hour I'll take it
  132. 5:32great you'll start tomorrow although
  133. 5:35this was a huge increase in pay I still
  134. 5:37had some expenses so at the end of the
  135. 5:39day I still have no money I'm out the
  136. 5:56fifth way is to make it easy to get a
  137. 5:57hold of you
  138. 5:58for example someone comes across your
  139. 5:59website and they think wow this guy
  140. 6:01looks like he could really help us out
  141. 6:02but there's no contact form well you may
  142. 6:05have just lost yourself a potential job
  143. 6:07offer so they check your social channels
  144. 6:08your Twitter doesn't have a messaging
  145. 6:11option your Linkedin doesn't exist and
  146. 6:13basically you're impossible to get ahold
  147. 6:14of you have to start thinking outside of
  148. 6:16just the jobs you applied for what if in
  149. 6:19theory people came to you and gave you
  150. 6:21job offers wouldn't that be a lot better
  151. 6:23so the first thing is to put a contact
  152. 6:25form on your website if you have one
  153. 6:26make sure you have a somewhat
  154. 6:28professional email right so if you're
  155. 6:30sending emails to people make sure your
  156. 6:32emails not skater chick 74 at yahoo.com
  157. 6:36the second thing you can do is have an
  158. 6:37up-to-date LinkedIn profile talking
  159. 6:39about your experiences and your
  160. 6:40achievements and everything like that I
  161. 6:42can't even tell you how many recruiters
  162. 6:44messaged me on LinkedIn and there's good
  163. 6:46recruiters and bad recruiters there's
  164. 6:48ones that genuinely look at my profile
  165. 6:50and say hey he's a.net developer let's
  166. 6:52give him an offer at this other company
  167. 6:54and see if he'd be a good fit but the
  168. 6:56downside with LinkedIn is you're also
  169. 6:57going to get those recruiters that just
  170. 6:59spam everybody and it looks something
  171. 7:02like this hi Caleb I noticed you had
  172. 7:04experience in software developer I think
  173. 7:07you'd be a great fit for our new opening
  174. 7:09senior custodial engineer at large
  175. 7:12technology company please apply today we
  176. 7:15have great benefits wow it's really nice
  177. 7:18that you would reach out to me
  178. 7:18unfortunately I Caleb we haven't heard
  179. 7:21back from you
  180. 7:22did we say we have great benefits well
  181. 7:24like I was trying to say I'm not really
  182. 7:26looking at them we appreciate your
  183. 7:27interest here's the URL for you to apply
  184. 7:35we have great benefits the last way you
  185. 7:38can make it easy to get a hold of you is
  186. 7:39to have a full social presence so make
  187. 7:42sure all your Twitter channels or
  188. 7:44Facebook's or whatever are up-to-date
  189. 7:45and that you're not posting crap on
  190. 7:47there you wouldn't say in front of a
  191. 7:49potential future boss I have received
  192. 7:51two interviews thanks to Facebook
  193. 7:53messages one of them actually turned
  194. 7:54into a job so there you go if I wasn't
  195. 7:56careful I would have missed out on these
  196. 7:58opportunities and probably been homeless
  197. 8:00living under a bridge so that is the
  198. 8:02conclusion of this video hopefully it
  199. 8:04was helpful for you guys if you've
  200. 8:05enjoyed it just ask that you would click
  201. 8:07the subscribe button and if you really
  202. 8:09appreciate my content consider
  203. 8:10supporting me on patreon and how about
  204. 8:12you give me your tips on how to get your
  205. 8:14first coding job thanks guys and I'll
  206. 8:15see you in the next one
