- 0:00I have an apathy issue. I'm okay with
- 0:02that.
- 0:02>> But you're torn by it, my friend.
- 0:03>> No, agreed.
- 0:04The reason you're not happy is the mind
- 0:06is leading you. Take the astronauts. I
- 0:08got to interview several of them, right?
- 0:10Think of that. They went out and they
- 0:11competed. They had They wanted to be an
- 0:13astronaut, right? You had a version of
- 0:15that. I want to be a business owner,
- 0:16whatever it was you had, right? And they
- 0:17beat everybody, right? Tens of thousands
- 0:20of people. They got down to 100, down to
- 0:2125, down to six, down to the guys that
- 0:23go to the moon, right? And they walk on
- 0:25the moon, they look back and see that
- 0:26image. You and I have seen it. They took
- 0:27blue-green of the of the Earth, but that
- 0:29wasn't them seeing it. And they make it
- 0:31back and survive. They splash down. They
- 0:34have a ticker-tape parade. They shake
- 0:35the president's hand.
- 0:37Now, what the do you do after you've
- 0:39walked on the moon for adventure? Like
- 0:41like you're 35 and you've walked on the
- 0:43moon. What do you do?
- 0:45At 36 years old, you built such a
- 0:47foundation of business, of of
- 0:49contribution, of wealth, of your body,
- 0:52that at this stage, it shouldn't be
- 0:54pain. It shouldn't be suffering. I don't
- 0:55think it has to be any of those things.
- 0:56I think it's can be total joy. But you
- 0:59have to kind of rewire your brain
- 1:00because otherwise that past training
- 1:02conditions you. I mean, how many people
- 1:03do you know that were rich and famous
- 1:06and the world loved and like themselves.
- 1:09Yeah.
- 1:10>> [snorts]
- 1:10>> Cuz they stopped growing. And most of
- 1:12them became alcoholics and drug
- 1:14addicted. Yeah.
- 1:15And the reason is they forgot how to
- 1:17find that joy or that adventure and a
- 1:19smile. Mhm. And so you have trained
- 1:22yourself to be pain equals success and
- 1:25success has a certain amount of value,
- 1:27but screw happiness. You have literally
- 1:29hypnotized yourself into missing it
- 1:31because you weren't feeling fulfilled.
- 1:32The only thing that makes us feel alive
- 1:33is growth. You know, when you grow, then
- 1:36you have something to give. And when you
- 1:38give, then your life is more meaningful
- 1:39than just, you know, pleasure. You
- 1:41money, food, alcohol, sex, whatever it
- 1:43is, you know? But it's never going to be
- 1:45the same as when you have something
- 1:46that's larger than you that you're
- 1:48called to. I think the biggest problem
- 1:49we have as human beings is that we think
- 1:51we shouldn't have any. Mhm. It's like
- 1:53problems make you grow. Problems call to
- 1:56you because Listen, you live We're both
- 1:57in good shape. You wouldn't be there if
- 1:59you lifted light weights and did 100
- 2:01curls with some lightweight, right?
- 2:03You're built. You've built this body.
- 2:04You built it by challenging it. But,
- 2:07some people, maybe because of your
- 2:08background in the fitness industry, no
- 2:11pain, no gain. But, today we know that's
- 2:12not true. You know, that we know today
- 2:14that it's minimum dose will produce the
- 2:16maximum result. You want to If you
- 2:17overdo it, you tear down too much,
- 2:19right? It's like finding the right dose,
- 2:21just like anything else, like a drug for
- 2:23somebody. If you think you're going to
- 2:24just go off and enjoy your life and not
- 2:26add value, you're going to be diluted.
- 2:28You're going to be frustrated.
- 2:31How do you see the dichotomy between
- 2:33[music] duty and enjoyment?
- 2:36So, duty
- 2:38could be a good word, like if
- 2:39[clears throat] you're seeing yourself
- 2:40like a soldier,
- 2:41>> Yeah. right? But, I don't look at it
- 2:42that way. I look at it as opportunity. I
- 2:45don't feel a sense of duty. I feel a
- 2:46sense of joy Yeah. in being able to
- 2:49contribute. To me, contribution is what
- 2:51we're made for. Mhm. Like, it's not hard
- 2:53to meet your own needs as a human being,
- 2:54right? Right. Not that difficult today
- 2:56in the world we're in today. But, to
- 2:57have a fulfilling life, you have to have
- 2:59a something you care about more than
- 3:00yourself. Yeah. And so, if you get into
- 3:02a business just to make money, and
- 3:03there's nothing wrong with that,
- 3:04>> Yeah. those people usually, you know,
- 3:06even if they succeed, they hit a limit
- 3:08of fulfillment because the economic
- 3:11returns only produce so much. Yeah. So,
- 3:13I don't look at duty and enjoyment. I
- 3:15look at it as more like it's all
- 3:16enjoyment because contribution is the
- 3:18ultimate enjoyment for me. I mean, I get
- 3:20into business for impact, and economics
- 3:22are second. If I have enough impact,
- 3:24you'll never have to worry about
- 3:25economics in your life. And I found that
- 3:27to be true in my own life. There's two
- 3:28types of motivation, if you don't think
- 3:29of it that way. There's push motivation,
- 3:31which is, let's say, duty, Yeah. or I've
- 3:34got to do this, or I have to do or
- 3:35obligation, right? Pull motivation is
- 3:38where there's something out there that
- 3:39you want to serve more than yourself,
- 3:41that'll get you up early, keep you up
- 3:42late, and it it it isn't hard. It isn't
- 3:45duty. It is like what I'm made for.
- 3:47Yeah. When you tap into that, your
- 3:50energy level will explode, your
- 3:52contribution will explode, will give you
- 3:54the constant endurance to move forward
- 3:56in a way in which you enjoy your life
- 3:58rather than someday when I get to this
- 3:59number then I'm slowly going to feel
- 4:01good. To me it's not duty, but I do
- 4:03believe those much is given much is
- 4:06expected. But
- 4:07>> of the whole book. Oh, really? I I come
- 4:09from that place too, but
- 4:10but to me the expectation is a pleasure.
- 4:13The difficulty that I have is finding
- 4:15enjoyment outside of work. Mhm. And
- 4:18[music]
- 4:18the contribution from that perspective.
- 4:20Like I've I've spoken to a number of
- 4:21billionaires yourself included where I
- 4:23I'm like
- 4:25the next game. They were like, you
- 4:26should do something that like really
- 4:27helps people. And I was like, I I feel
- 4:30like I do that. That is probably a
- 4:32struggle that I have dealt with which is
- 4:33that I have a
- 4:35I have an apathy issue. When I got in
- 4:36the fitness industry, I got into it
- 4:38because fitness was the only thing I was
- 4:39really into and so I was like, well,
- 4:40I'll do something I love cuz I was a
- 4:41management consultant. I was like, well,
- 4:42this sucks. I'm going to do something I
- 4:43love. And then as soon as I got into the
- 4:45business of fitness, I realized that the
- 4:46vast majority of my day had nothing to
- 4:47do with fitness at all and it was like
- 4:49billing and, you know, membership sales
- 4:51and like all this other stuff. And when
- 4:53I started getting the testimonials
- 4:54coming in of these people who were going
- 4:55through, you know, our process, losing
- 4:57weight, getting off medications, [music]
- 4:58whatever. Maybe the first couple months
- 4:59it felt like something, but then on like
- 5:01the hundredth and the thousandth, I was
- 5:02like, well, yeah, you know, of course
- 5:03you stopped you moved better and you
- 5:05stopped eating and it worked out,
- 5:07you know.
- 5:08You know, like it just it's basically
- 5:09the the the magic was gone.
- 5:11>> The reason you're not happy is the mind
- 5:13is leading you. Get in your head, you're
- 5:14dead. Yep. You can execute with your
- 5:16mind so well. You recognize, I'm sure
- 5:19like I do pattern systems. You know how
- 5:21to put them in place, get it done, but
- 5:23then there's not the emotional
- 5:24connection. You need a moon shot or two
- 5:26and you need to get connected to the
- 5:28people and see and feel the impact in a
- 5:30new variety because otherwise it's the
- 5:32law of familiarity. Yep. You get around
- 5:34anything enough, no matter how good it
- 5:36is, you start taking a little bit for
- 5:37granted. And and that's just human
- 5:40nature, that's not you. So you have to
- 5:42wake it up and you got to get
- 5:43associated. So what I try to say to you
- 5:45is uh stop this screw happiness thing.
- 5:47[music] Yeah. And just actually say to
- 5:49yourself, no. I deserve happiness, I'm
- 5:52going to create happiness, but I have to
- 5:53do it differently than I've done it
- 5:54before. I can't just get up and just
- 5:56work some train to work. I can't I'm not
- 5:58a robot anymore.
- 6:00>> Yeah. Right? You're way too smart and
- 6:01you got way too big a heart. I know you
- 6:03do. It's you're not connected to it and
- 6:04you don't have something that you're
- 6:06obsessed about that makes you feel fully
- 6:08alive. You're doing it cuz you need to.
- 6:11The difference between have to, duty
- 6:13>> Mhm. and get to Yeah. That's the
- 6:15difference between rich and poor. And
- 6:17rich and poor is not money.
- 6:19Rich and poor is feeling fully alive.
- 6:21That's rich, right? Poor is you work
- 6:23your ass off and you have plenty of
- 6:24money and you help all kinds of people,
- 6:26but you don't connect it. Your energy
- 6:28has got to be shifted. You need a kick
- 6:29in the ass. You need to get an
- 6:31environment where you're on fire.
- 6:33>> Yeah. And then at that state, you've had
- 6:36that state before, I guarantee you when
- 6:37you got here. But then you got so caught
- 6:39up in the push. Mhm. I think you've
- 6:41missed some of the pull for your life.
- 6:42And I And I think this is not just true
- 6:44of you, it's true of most of us. Why are
- 6:46most people stressed? Mhm. Like if you
- 6:48talk to people like successful people,
- 6:50they're always telling me I'm so
- 6:51stressed. I'm stressed. Yeah. I'll tell
- 6:52you why you're stressed, cuz you're
- 6:53managing all these great businesses,
- 6:54you're managing all this great money.
- 6:55You're But you know what? When you
- 6:57manage
- 6:57puts you back in survival. Are you going
- 6:59to tell me it's more stressful today
- 7:00than the Dark Ages? I mean, come on. But
- 7:03what's happened is we have all this
- 7:04we're trying to manage and we're not
- 7:05made to manage.
- 7:07>> Mhm. You've You've been so successful
- 7:09that now you've hit a set point. And now
- 7:11the only way that set point is people
- 7:13get to a point where they question and
- 7:14they start going is it worth it or not?
- 7:16But I I have to keep doing it. No,
- 7:18sometimes you would make a point you
- 7:19say, no, I'm going to keep doing what
- 7:21I'm doing, but I'm going to be connected
- 7:22to it at a different level or I'm going
- 7:24to change paths all together. I'm going
- 7:25to add a path that brings another
- 7:27dimension to me. Those are the places to
- 7:28go. Passion comes from the Latin passio,
- 7:31right? Yes. Uh which means suffering or
- 7:32to endure.
- 7:33>> Yeah, and And so that made
- 7:35actually a tremendous amount of sense
- 7:36for me. And so I actually reframed that
- 7:39whole concept as like find a goal worth
- 7:40suffering for. A goal worth suffering
- 7:42for. I mean, I don't I don't have goals
- 7:44that I'm worth suffering for. No, don't
- 7:46get me wrong. You're not Every day is
- 7:48not like pure bliss, and there's lots of
- 7:50things that I know I love to do that I
- 7:52need to do to succeed, or I got to deal
- 7:53with. That's part of life. But, pain is
- 7:55part of life. Suffering's an option.
- 7:57You've heard that phrase, but it's a
- 7:58fact. It's not just a phrase. That's why
- 8:00you've heard it so much. But, when you
- 8:02make it your goal to find a goal worth
- 8:04suffering for, you're going to suffer,
- 8:06right? And so, it's in your language.
- 8:08>> I got my wish. You got your wish. And
- 8:10what's happened is this part of you is
- 8:11so strong, brother.
- 8:14This part of you is, too, but this is
- 8:15the lead right now. If you change the
- 8:17lead to here by that sense of connection
- 8:20and everything else, and get the hell
- 8:21out of your head, cuz your brain is
- 8:23always going to reduce things. It's like
- 8:25your brain will never make you happy.
- 8:26That's the problem.
- 8:27>> Yeah. Get out of your head, get into
- 8:28your heart.
- 8:29>> Yes. I love the language. I don't
- 8:30[music] understand what it means.
- 8:31>> Cuz the brain reduces everything, and
- 8:33compares it. Whereas, the heart
- 8:36magnifies everything. It takes the
- 8:38little things and makes them bigger. You
- 8:39tell a lie big enough, loud enough, long
- 8:41enough, sooner or later people believe
- 8:42you. You've told yourself a lie true
- 8:44happiness.
- 8:45>> Mhm. No. Screw suffering. Mhm. Like, I
- 8:48want to engage enjoyment. It's not my
- 8:50duty, it's my gift. It's my honor. It's
- 8:53my opportunity. It's it's grace that has
- 8:56put me in this place in my life.
- 8:59The words you attach to your
- 9:00experiences, I said, become your
- 9:02experience. I call it transformational
- 9:03vocabulary. And so, your words Yeah.
- 9:06shape your psychology.
- 9:08And so, a few word changes, as stupid as
- 9:10that sounds, as overly simplistic as
- 9:12that sounds, or people give metaphors.
- 9:14They'll say, "Oh, man, I'm like I'm
- 9:16like, you know, like I'm at the END OF
- 9:17MY ROPE." AND I'LL GO, "WELL, set it
- 9:18down and come over here."
- 9:20What are you talking [laughter] about?
- 9:21We hypnotize ourselves. But, the words
- 9:23escalated the emotion. And once they're
- 9:25there as a metaphor or as words,
- 9:27linguistics change how the brain
- 9:29functions. And so, part of yours is some
- 9:32simple linguistics, but the other part
- 9:34is state. So, I know the word passion
- 9:36literally comes from pain. I know that
- 9:37too. And sometimes we get up on the
- 9:39original definition versus how we can
- 9:41live it. Right?
- 9:42>> [music]
- 9:43>> Thanks so much, Tony. I appreciate it.
- 9:45No, thank you, brother. Thank you.
