- 0:03i hope
- 0:04i'm not falling i hope i'm not falling
- 0:09down i choke as i plummet
- 0:12lost grip now i'm falling what's up
- 0:15everybody welcome back to the channel
- 0:16today i'm gonna be talking about how to
- 0:17find the aaron ralston rock if
- 0:20uh you're watching this video you're
- 0:21probably familiar with the story uh
- 0:23so i'll spare you the details on that
- 0:25but it's something i've wanted to do for
- 0:27a while and on this trip to utah's
- 0:29camping trip i'm on
- 0:30i decided to go find it it's out in
- 0:33canyonlands i knew it was out in
- 0:34canyonlands
- 0:36uh but i couldn't find anything on
- 0:38youtube
- 0:39or the internet really that was
- 0:41explaining how to get there
- 0:43uh plenty of youtube videos of people
- 0:45who went there
- 0:47plenty of photos on the internet people
- 0:48who have found it but i couldn't really
- 0:50find
- 0:51details of how to get there so i wanted
- 0:53to go out
- 0:54find it myself and then maybe help you
- 0:56guys out if you're looking
- 0:57for the rock and let you know where it
- 0:59is so where i am right now is out in
- 1:01canyonlands which is where
- 1:02all that went down and there's a camping
- 1:05spot
- 1:05called bj's motel 6.
- 1:09it's not actually a motel but just a
- 1:11cool little area near blue john
- 1:13uh to camp and i'm actually not even
- 1:15gonna be staying here i'm gonna be going
- 1:17further on there's a couple other slot
- 1:20canyons
- 1:20up the ways a bit that i want to check
- 1:22out but um so
- 1:24my first attempt this i actually it took
- 1:26me two attempts to find
- 1:28the aaron ralston rock and the first
- 1:31attempt i thought i could
- 1:32see the uh go through horseshoe canyon
- 1:35which
- 1:36is where the great gallery rock art is
- 1:38and i highly recommend checking that out
- 1:39too by the way if you're over here
- 1:41in this area really uh awesome
- 1:45old indian artwork on these uh walls of
- 1:48this canyon that
- 1:50they estimate it could be up to 2000
- 1:52years old which is crazy
- 1:53but so i thought i could do that and at
- 1:56the end of that hike just keep going to
- 1:58the end of horseshoe canyon it looked
- 1:59like
- 1:59it ran into the slot canyon where aaron
- 2:02roster was
- 2:03and how i found that slot canyon because
- 2:05it's hard to
- 2:06like i said it's hard to find
- 2:07information on this on on the internet
- 2:09but if you search on your google maps
- 2:10aaron roston rock
- 2:12it pulls up a coordinate location for it
- 2:15and you can see what slight canyon is on
- 2:17and so what i was doing was my location
- 2:20services work out here on my phone
- 2:22but i have no service so i just checked
- 2:25my phone every once in a while and make
- 2:26sure i was heading
- 2:27in the right direction towards it but
- 2:29that
- 2:30method going through horseshoe canyon
- 2:32was actually a failure because
- 2:33when you get to the end of horseshoe
- 2:35finally it's a pretty decent height but
- 2:36when you get to the end
- 2:38you're faced with a 30 foot cliff
- 2:40leading up to the slide king you can see
- 2:42the slot canyon aaron rawson was in
- 2:44but it's just 30 foot up smooth rock
- 2:47that's just a cliff so there's no way i
- 2:49could get up there
- 2:50so i was disappointed hiked back out and
- 2:52uh the next day i went to
- 2:54a trail head called little blue john
- 2:56trailhead and
- 2:58i figured on the satellite gps i
- 3:01recommend turning on your satellite gps
- 3:03it looked like i could just follow that
- 3:05trail all the way to the slot canyon
- 3:07that aaron rawson was in
- 3:08and that's pretty much what i did you
- 3:10start out and
- 3:12maybe about i don't know 30 minutes of
- 3:16really easy hiking you
- 3:17run into your first little bit of canyon
- 3:20earring
- 3:20and it's nothing too tricky uh you ought
- 3:22to be able to get through it pretty easy
- 3:24and then it's easy hiking from there all
- 3:26the way
- 3:27uh to the slot canyon really you're just
- 3:29walking through
- 3:31regular dirt like this sandy dirt that's
- 3:34at the bottom of all these canyons
- 3:37and uh yeah just follow the direction of
- 3:40the canyon and
- 3:41keep an eye on your dot just to make
- 3:42sure you're not turning the wrong way or
- 3:44anything
- 3:44and there's a few canyons that break off
- 3:46of it but i'm pretty sure they're most
- 3:47of them are all dead ends so you
- 3:50it's pretty hard not to follow this
- 3:51canyon all the way to the
- 3:53the aaron roston rock and once you get
- 3:56there it's pretty obvious that you've
- 3:58come
- 3:58across it because of that uh iconic and
- 4:01famous
- 4:02s log that's wedged in the top of the
- 4:05slot canyon
- 4:05and so you'll see that and then you can
- 4:07okay yeah i know i'm in the right place
- 4:09and then you do a bit of canyoneering to
- 4:12get through
- 4:13to the actual rock and you may miss the
- 4:15rock when you get i know the first time
- 4:17i went through i
- 4:18just passed right by the rock and i
- 4:20thought of myself i was like
- 4:21is that it but i couldn't tell because
- 4:23there's a ton of other boulders
- 4:25in the same area and a lot of other
- 4:27rocks wedged in there with a lot of uh
- 4:30logs and sticks and so it doesn't look
- 4:33quite like it does on the movie or even
- 4:36in a lot of the google images that
- 4:38you'll look up
- 4:38of the of the rock location so i hiked
- 4:41all the way to the end
- 4:43of the slot canyon and i recommend doing
- 4:46that anyway it's
- 4:46incredible canyoneering through this
- 4:50these tight squeezes and turns through
- 4:52the slot canyon
- 4:53it's really really beautiful it's like
- 4:56um
- 4:58it's like if antelope canyon is walking
- 5:00through a museum
- 5:02this is like actually being there in the
- 5:05stuff that
- 5:06that you're looking at in the museum i
- 5:07don't know if that makes any sense but
- 5:08it's really
- 5:09it's really cool really authentic you
- 5:11just feel like you're you're out there
- 5:12in the middle of nowhere it's just you
- 5:13and this
- 5:14slot can just really cool experience you
- 5:16get to the end and it opens up in this
- 5:18great view of the end of horseshoe
- 5:19canyon
- 5:20and uh it's i could see where i was the
- 5:24day before
- 5:25and um really cool view nice little
- 5:27cliff you can see where some people had
- 5:29rappelled off of it
- 5:30uh but yeah then i went back through
- 5:33came to the rock again and this time i
- 5:36compared a lot of photos or the
- 5:38i screenshot a photo of ian roston next
- 5:41to it
- 5:41and so i was comparing it i compared a
- 5:44lot of the rock on the
- 5:45on the side of the slot canyon with the
- 5:47photo and i finally lined everything up
- 5:49and was like oh this
- 5:50is it this is crazy and pretty cool to
- 5:52be there
- 5:53where it all went down i mean i'm not a
- 5:55fanboy of aaron rossen or anything i
- 5:57haven't read his book i saw 127 hours
- 5:59love the movie
- 6:00and i really love the story of survival
- 6:04that it is
- 6:05but uh yeah just a really cool
- 6:07experience being there okay so
- 6:09this is the round i took from salt lake
- 6:10city it's about a five hour drive
- 6:13to east utah out here in canyonlands and
- 6:17uh you'll have service the whole way
- 6:18until probably right here
- 6:20this is when i lose service on 24 but
- 6:22this is still paved
- 6:23it's not the dirt road yet now when you
- 6:25turn off of 24 take that left
- 6:28this is when it becomes a dirt road with
- 6:31the sand dunes on it but
- 6:33like i said nothing too bad there and
- 6:35that'll take you straight to
- 6:37the great gallery rock art and that hike
- 6:41and so originally what i thought i could
- 6:43do is
- 6:44continue along this hike after
- 6:48the great gallery rock art and just hike
- 6:50to the end
- 6:51and then enter the slot canyon from the
- 6:53air
- 6:54but right here is a dead end
- 6:58so that's like the 30 foot cliff to get
- 7:02up into the
- 7:03slide canyon i couldn't do it so what i
- 7:05did was i went and i parked
- 7:07at little blue john canyon trailhead and
- 7:10that just leads you through this really
- 7:12easy hike through this canyon
- 7:14all the way to the aaron rosston boulder
- 7:17and it's
- 7:17not too difficult and it's pretty easy
- 7:19to just follow the main
- 7:21trajectory of the canyon there's a few
- 7:23turn offs but
- 7:24if you follow the the wider trail
- 7:28that leads through the main part of the
- 7:30canyon it pretty much takes you straight
- 7:31there just
- 7:32stay left there's a few turn offs that
- 7:34might lead back up
- 7:36uh blue john canyon in a different
- 7:39direction so just stay left and that'll
- 7:40take you all the way to aaron rosston
- 7:42uh rock but if you keep your
- 7:45phone on with your location services you
- 7:49will have location services and you'll
- 7:50be able to see your dot on the map
- 7:52and you can follow it straight to the
- 7:55aaron rosten rock
- 7:56so nothing too difficult and that's the
- 7:58method i would recommend doing to get
- 8:01there
- 8:01uh okay one thing i forgot to mention is
- 8:04that
- 8:05to get out here to the blue john canyon
- 8:09horseshoe canyon aaron rossenrock area
- 8:12you have to drive down about
- 8:1330 miles of dirt roads
- 8:16and i mean it's nothing too intense
- 8:19there are some sand dunes that you have
- 8:21to pass which can feel a little bit
- 8:22sketch
- 8:23but any vehicle ought to be able to do
- 8:26it um
- 8:26you don't have to have four wheel drive
- 8:28or anything there's signs that say roads
- 8:30may be impassable and if there's
- 8:32it has just been a storm maybe they are
- 8:34but i've never had any problem and i
- 8:36always take
- 8:37the cheapest rental car i can get which
- 8:39is
- 8:40usually an economy car this one uh this
- 8:43trip it's a chevy malibu
- 8:44and i've had no problems but yeah it's
- 8:47just a lot of
- 8:48dirt roads out here and it makes access
- 8:50a little bit more difficult
- 8:52but honestly i like that because
- 8:55it keeps crowds down and uh you know if
- 8:59something's
- 9:00hard to get to not many people want to
- 9:02put in the effort
- 9:03or the work to get there and then the
- 9:06people who do
- 9:07get to have it to themselves like today
- 9:09i have not seen another
- 9:11living soul it's just been me out here
- 9:14which is
- 9:15perfect that's the way i like it but
- 9:18yeah just something to keep in mind
- 9:19the uh the dirt roads nothing to worry
- 9:23about them
- 9:23[Music]
- 9:25and it stacks up like the problems i
- 9:26don't want to get the catch up i just
- 9:28want love
- 9:28sick of being sad i'm feeling washed up
- 9:30what is happiness what's up with that
