  5. 0:13exercises come from my book beginning
  6. 0:15singing hey there this is John Henney I

  13. 0:37what I want you to do to start off
  14. 0:40act like you're agreeing with me
  15. 0:41[Music]
  16. 0:44and now let's stretch that out a little
  17. 0:47hmm
  18. 0:49good let's stay on that um
  19. 0:51make it nice and Buzzy don't real
  20. 0:55breathy
  21. 0:58see what you feel the vibrations you may
  22. 1:01feel them more in the front of your
  23. 1:02mouth
  24. 1:04um
  25. 1:06good now we're going to take that sound
  26. 1:09and we're going to Glide to a higher
  27. 1:11note
  28. 1:12um you now
  29. 1:14[Music]
  30. 1:16do you feel the sensation goes somewhere
  31. 1:19else
  32. 1:20um
  33. 1:21does it maybe
  34. 1:23go behind the soft palate you maybe feel
  35. 1:26it even behind your eyes a little kind
  36. 1:28of takes this pathway
  37. 1:31um
  38. 1:34now let's start on a higher note hmm
  39. 1:38go down to a Lono
  40. 1:41oh that sensation travels back down and
  41. 1:45so this pathway even if it's really
  42. 1:48really subtle at first is incredibly
  43. 1:51important because this is the pathway of
  44. 1:53sensation to your higher notes if we
  45. 1:56don't allow that
  46. 1:59feels like it gets blocked on the roof
  47. 2:01of my mouth but if I allow the sound to
  48. 2:04[Music]
  49. 2:05um
  50. 2:06go behind my soft palate the roof of
  51. 2:09your mouth is your hard palate you drag
  52. 2:11your tongue back you feel it gets soft
  53. 2:12you'll go back behind there
  54. 2:14good now let's do it on ooh perfect
  55. 2:22now I want you to feel the difference
  56. 2:25between some vowels I want you to say
  57. 2:29ooh and then e
  58. 2:35[Music]
  59. 2:37see what changes right pay attention to
  60. 2:40your top
  61. 2:44[Music]
  62. 2:46hear your tongue move forward this is
  63. 2:48really important getting awareness of
  64. 2:50your tongue in your singing is key
  65. 2:53because the tongue is an incredibly
  66. 2:56important part of singing That's often
  67. 2:59overlooked very often we think okay we
  68. 3:01don't want tension in our tongue but
  69. 3:02that's not entirely true we need this
  70. 3:04tongue to be moving it's a very
  71. 3:06important muscle and it has a lot to do
  72. 3:08with changes in resonance and feel what
  73. 3:11the tongue does As you move from uh
  74. 3:13[Music]
  75. 3:15foreign
  76. 3:17yeah the lips change a little the tongue
  77. 3:20changes a lot it moves forward
  78. 3:24and then you can even hear the
  79. 3:26frequencies
  80. 3:28[Music]
  81. 3:31you
  82. 3:32see how the E gets brighter the E has
  83. 3:37higher frequencies in the resonance it's
  84. 3:40kind of like an EQ system and the ooh
  85. 3:43we've we've pulled down the highs right
  86. 3:46it's kind of like a DG going DJ
  87. 3:49[Music]
  88. 3:51and that's our
  89. 3:51[Music]
  90. 3:52[Laughter]
  91. 3:54who is a very rather mellow sound it's
  92. 3:57very closed down doesn't have a lot a
  93. 3:59lot of high frequencies but as we
  94. 4:01[Music]
  95. 4:04that's like the DJ going
  96. 4:07with the filter now feel
  97. 4:13[Applause]
  98. 4:13[Music]
  99. 4:17[Applause]
  100. 4:17[Music]
  101. 4:19you know how those change
  102. 4:22not just not just the movements in the
  103. 4:24mouth
  104. 4:25listen to the frequencies listen to the
  105. 4:27brightness and feel how the sensation
  106. 4:30changes
  107. 4:35[Music]
  108. 4:38[Applause]
  109. 4:39[Music]
  110. 4:40these little exercises even though
  111. 4:43they're simple just do these for a
  112. 4:47minute or two each day
  113. 4:49for a week or so
  114. 4:50and you'll really start to clue in to
  115. 4:54the Resonance of your voice because as
  116. 4:57you progressed as a singer resonance is
  117. 5:00essential and having a command of your
  118. 5:02resonance is going to give you vocal
  119. 5:05balance it's going to give you high
  120. 5:06notes it's going to give you so many
  121. 5:09good things in your singing but you need
  122. 5:12to develop this awareness and some of us
  123. 5:15when we begin singing and I know it was
  124. 5:17this way for me these Sensations are a
  125. 5:19little dull they're a little outside of
  126. 5:22our awareness and so this repetition
  127. 5:24allows us to begin to to feel what's
  128. 5:28going on and once you get those
  129. 5:32Sensations then when you start getting
  130. 5:34into advanced concepts like Val tuning
  131. 5:36you'll be much better prepared so I hope
  132. 5:40this was helpful and uh we'll talk soon
