How to end an argument in Persian — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00I was just in the middle of an argument
- 0:01with someone I love, my cousin, about
- 0:04politics when all of a sudden I
- 0:06remembered this Persian phrase that my
- 0:08late grandfather taught me. And even
- 0:10though I was about to dig in, it kind of
- 0:12stopped me cold. And this phrase was
- 0:15perfect for a moment like this when
- 0:17you're about to burn a bridge over an
- 0:19opinion. And I thought that in this age
- 0:21when everything is so polarized, it
- 0:23seems like every disagreement blows up,
- 0:26this would be a useful phrase for you to
- 0:27know as well. And this is
- 0:34Literally this means that's your belief,
- 0:36then I have nothing to submit. But the
- 0:38more I think about it, there's so much
- 0:40more to it than that. It's not I give
- 0:42up, or it's not you win, it's I respect
- 0:46you too much to keep fighting. And I
- 0:49respect myself too much to pretend
- 0:52you've changed my mind. You keep your
- 0:53view, I keep mine. So whether in real
- 0:56life with people or online with
- 0:59disagreements that we have, we're often
- 1:00arguing with people to the point where
- 1:02we can't move on. And sometimes the
- 1:04wisest thing to do is say, this is your
- 1:06belief, I'll leave it there. In other
- 1:08words, I will gracefully let this go. So
- 1:11next time you feel yourself digging in
- 1:13with someone you love or even someone
- 1:16you see online, just remember these
- 1:18words.
- 1:23I have a ton more phrases like this that
- 1:25I've learned from my grandparents and
- 1:27others around me, more humble Persian
- 1:29phrases. Follow along.
