- 0:00if you want to edit shorts and reals but
- 0:01aren't sure where to start then this
- 0:03video will guide you through the exact
- 0:05step-by-step process inside Da Vinci
- 0:07resolve I'll show you how to set up your
- 0:09project format your clips for vertical
- 0:11video add captions and Export with the
- 0:13best settings let's dive in you got to
- 0:16just press record hey welcome back to
- 0:18think media so to start off we want to
- 0:19make sure we have all of our footage in
- 0:21one place and organized anytime that I
- 0:24start a new edit I like to create a
- 0:26folder for that specific project so here
- 0:28I have this title ulanzi lm19 which is
- 0:32this little LED light that I will be
- 0:34creating a short about if I click inside
- 0:36of this I have a footage folder clicking
- 0:39inside of that again I have an a roll or
- 0:42my talking head video and then my b roll
- 0:45it's important to have this organized
- 0:46from the get-go as it's going to make
- 0:48our editing process a lot easier which
- 0:50brings us to the second step and that is
- 0:52to open D Vinci resolve and set up our
- 0:54project so go ahead click on the D Vinci
- 0:56resolve icon and wait for this to load
- 0:59with that opened up we now want to
- 1:00create a new project for our videos so
- 1:02we'll go down here click new project and
- 1:05we're going to give our project a name
- 1:07and I'll just type in the same ulanzi
- 1:10lm9 short and I'll click create now that
- 1:13we created a new project inside the
- 1:15Venture resolve want to turn your
- 1:17attention to the bottom of the screen
- 1:18where there are these different tabs
- 1:20there is a media folder go ahead and
- 1:23click that and from this page we can
- 1:25actually import the footage for this
- 1:27project and the easiest way to do this
- 1:29is just to to go down to your finder and
- 1:31we're going to bring in this footage
- 1:33folder right over here into this left
- 1:35corner underneath the master and if we
- 1:37do that that keeps all of our footage
- 1:39nicely organized in the folders we
- 1:41previously created next we want to go
- 1:43down to the edit page and click on that
- 1:46and now we can start importing our
- 1:47footage into our timeline on top left
- 1:50corner of the screen we have our footage
- 1:52folder and then inside of that we have
- 1:54our a roll and b roll I'm going to start
- 1:56clicking on the a roll and we're going
- 1:57to edit our a roll first before we even
- 2:00bother with b roll just yet so what
- 2:02we're going to want to do is drag in our
- 2:04a roll into our timeline just by
- 2:07clicking here and we'll just drag and
- 2:09drop and now we have our video in the
- 2:12timeline as we can see I recorded this
- 2:14for about 10 minutes or so and we're
- 2:18going to want to chop this down to be
- 2:19around 60 seconds but before we start
- 2:22chopping up our video because we are
- 2:24making a vertical short we want to
- 2:27adjust our timeline settings to create a
- 2:29vertical video you'll notice that this
- 2:31little timeline one icon has appeared
- 2:34and this is our timeline file and we
- 2:36want to adjust the timeline settings so
- 2:39what we're going to do is right click on
- 2:41that icon go down to timelines timeline
- 2:44settings and this is where we can change
- 2:46our timeline settings to be vertical so
- 2:49what we want to do is go down here to
- 2:50the bottom and uncheck use project
- 2:53settings and then the next thing we want
- 2:56to adjust is go right under timeline
- 2:58resolution and click on use vertical
- 3:01resolution go ahead and press okay and
- 3:04as you can see in our little preview
- 3:05window this will give us a vertical 9
- 3:08by6 aspect ratio again organization is
- 3:12key with any project so what I'm going
- 3:13to do is put this little timeline box
- 3:16into its own timeline folder to do that
- 3:19you can click anywhere here on the
- 3:20folder right click click new bin which
- 3:23is just resolved way of saying new
- 3:25folder and we can call this timelines
- 3:28and just drag and drop that into there
- 3:30and I can even move this timeline folder
- 3:33right under master and so if I click on
- 3:35the master folder I got my footage my
- 3:37timelines all nicely organized with our
- 3:40project now properly set up we can now
- 3:42begin to edit our short or real and to
- 3:45do that we want to go down here to the
- 3:47timeline and we want to cut out all my
- 3:49bad takes all my mistakes I make during
- 3:52this reel so we get a nice concise video
- 3:55playing back this video there are three
- 3:57times I make a mistake before the last
- 3:59take is actually good so we want to cut
- 4:02everything else up to that point and
- 4:05what I can do is just kind of go down
- 4:07here to the end until this little icon
- 4:08appears I can click on that and I can
- 4:11trim right up to that top corner now I'm
- 4:15going to undo this because we're so
- 4:17zoomed out it can be hard to tell when
- 4:19we actually want to begin so we can
- 4:21actually zoom into our timeline using
- 4:23this icon just kind of scale that up and
- 4:27this will allow me to get a lot more
- 4:29specific specific with how I want to
- 4:32where exactly I want to start the video
- 4:34so that is the perfect start to the
- 4:36video now this is the point I want this
- 4:38clip to end so we want to actually make
- 4:41a cut so I can go down here to this
- 4:43blade tool and then click on right there
- 4:46on the video right where my timeline
- 4:48header is and that will perform a cut
- 4:51right there now you also want to click
- 4:53on this Mt Gap and go ahead and press
- 4:55delete and that will actually make it
- 4:57start with the video rather than it
- 4:59being on a black screen so I'm going to
- 5:01go through this video Until I make
- 5:03another good take which is right here I
- 5:05want to make another cut again you can
- 5:07click the blade tool and select it or
- 5:10you can use command B the shortcut and
- 5:12it'll make a cut right there then you
- 5:15can reach down and press this video clip
- 5:17on the left press delete and then press
- 5:20a delete again on that empty Gap and now
- 5:23I can play these two clips together and
- 5:25it will be relatively seamless without
- 5:27all that empty mistakes in the middle so
- 5:29I'm going to do this throughout the
- 5:31entire video cut out all the mistakes in
- 5:33my video and we should get a nice video
- 5:36that is roughly 60 seconds long if you
- 5:38find this process super tedious I don't
- 5:40blame you it does take a long time
- 5:43that's why I'm super thankful for
- 5:44today's sponsor gling with gling I can
- 5:47take any video that I am talking to the
- 5:49camera drop it in and it's going to
- 5:52automatically process and remove all the
- 5:55bad takes and silences in my video so
- 5:57right here on this screen you can choose
- 5:59whether whether you want to cut silences
- 6:01bad takes remove filler words I like to
- 6:03leave these three things selected and I
- 6:06click enhance and edit once the video is
- 6:08finished processing this is what it
- 6:10looks like in all this gray area is
- 6:12where it automatically detected a
- 6:14mistake I made and cut it out just
- 6:16leaving the good takes the other thing I
- 6:18love about gling is I can edit my videos
- 6:21kind of like I would edit a Word
- 6:22document so there might be a few
- 6:24mistakes that gling didn't catch I can
- 6:26just go over here click this scissor
- 6:28icon and boom I've made an edit so
- 6:30having done very little with the actual
- 6:32editing of the a-roll I am ready to
- 6:34export out this video so I clicked on
- 6:36the export button and we could export
- 6:38this as an mp4 if you want to go that
- 6:41route I like to make a few additional
- 6:43edits inside the Venture resolve so
- 6:45let's click on resolve XML from here
- 6:48we're going to give our file a name so
- 6:49I'm just going to type in ulzi short and
- 6:51put gling in parentheses and we'll go
- 6:54ahead and save that into our project
- 6:56folder as you can tell I'm a pretty big
- 6:58fan of gling I love how it's speeds up
- 7:00my workflow and if you want to get
- 7:01started for free I'll leave a link in
- 7:03the description down below where you can
- 7:04sign up in order to import that file we
- 7:07saved from glean let's go ahead to file
- 7:10import timeline and we're going to go
- 7:13here to our file which has all of our
- 7:15projects in it once that's imported we
- 7:17want to give our timeline a name so I'm
- 7:19just going to type in ulanzi short
- 7:23gling import that so as you see we have
- 7:26a new timeline here and this is all the
- 7:28cuts made for is giving us a 42 second
- 7:31short again because I decided to record
- 7:33this as a horizontal video that I'm
- 7:35going to turn into a short we want to
- 7:38change our timeline settings again again
- 7:41we want to uncheck to use project
- 7:43settings click on use vertical
- 7:45resolution and press okay and if your
- 7:48footage is showing up like this instead
- 7:50of filling up the entire vertical video
- 7:52we can click on the inspector Tab and we
- 7:55can go over to zoom and we can just
- 7:57scale this up until we fit the full
- 7:59frame here I can then click command C to
- 8:03copy that effect and I can select all
- 8:06the other Clips press option V and click
- 8:09on this video attributes all of them
- 8:12will be just fine for this click apply
- 8:15and that will apply the effect to every
- 8:16single clip in our timeline and if you
- 8:19happen to be slightly off frame like I
- 8:21am for this clip again you can adjust
- 8:23the position settings I can just move
- 8:25that over to left so I get nice and
- 8:27centered this is one benefit about
- 8:29shooting in a horizontal and making it a
- 8:32vertical later you do have that
- 8:34flexibility to move it around okay now
- 8:36that we finished editing our a-roll we
- 8:38can now begin placing our b-roll the
- 8:40first step in placing your b-roll is
- 8:42listening through your a-roll footage
- 8:45and if you have a section where you have
- 8:47shot b-roll or need to go shoot b-roll
- 8:49what I'm going to do right here I talk
- 8:51about if you don't have enough light
- 8:52when you're filming with your phone I
- 8:54want to show off an example of what that
- 8:57would look like in a dark scenario so
- 8:59I'm going to go down here to my Boll
- 9:01setting and I have a clip right here and
- 9:06let's scroll through this I kind of
- 9:07recorded it all at once so right here is
- 9:10when I talk about not having enough
- 9:12light so in order to just import this
- 9:15section into our timeline what I'm going
- 9:18to do is Click I on the part I want to
- 9:20start the
- 9:22video I turn my head I'm going to click
- 9:24o and now down here I have two different
- 9:27options to import this I can just click
- 9:29anywhere on the screen and that will
- 9:31bring in its video and audio that might
- 9:35be helpful in some cases but for this I
- 9:37just want the video cuz I have my good
- 9:39audio on my aoll so let's go down here
- 9:42and click this video only clip we'll
- 9:44just drag and drop it right where we
- 9:46want it again we can scale this up using
- 9:48this slider and now we can get a little
- 9:50bit more fine-tuned on where we want to
- 9:52place this only to realize that you
- 9:53don't have
- 9:55enough with your phone only
- 9:59let's say only to realize your phone
- 10:02only to realize that you don't have
- 10:04enough
- 10:05light I can extend this a little bit
- 10:07more I can bring this back again I'm
- 10:09just using the trim tools a video with
- 10:11your phone only to realize that you
- 10:13don't have enough light well that's
- 10:15where this ulanzi magnetic selfie light
- 10:17comes in handy and I think that's
- 10:19perfect for our first clip now this
- 10:21first Boll shot was using my phone and I
- 10:23was filming that vertically so it all
- 10:25lines up perfectly however for this next
- 10:27b-roll shot I actually have it
- 10:29horizontal so again we want to just
- 10:31scale this up right so we don't see any
- 10:34black bars and you can actually adjust
- 10:36this little viewfinder too I notic a lot
- 10:39of people will kind of not fill the
- 10:40frame you see like these little skinny
- 10:42black bars at the top so just make sure
- 10:44that is nice filled in like so and then
- 10:47you can always reset this by clicking
- 10:50fit and I can play this back but if your
- 10:53phone doesn't have mac safe they
- 10:54actually come with a little magnetics
- 10:56and that's perfect as you notice where
- 10:58I'm placing these be is usually at the
- 11:00junction between these two separate
- 11:02Clips if you can hide that jump cut seam
- 11:05it's going to make it feel a lot more
- 11:08professional as if you did it in one
- 11:10take by some miracle so as you can see I
- 11:12have a jump cut right here so I'm just
- 11:14going to grab my next b-roll example and
- 11:17right here just click
- 11:19i o drag that video right on top of that
- 11:23and go ahead use that as well the cool
- 11:26part is you can use it for both filming
- 11:27with the back cameras or flipping and I
- 11:29want to show this a little bit longer
- 11:32cameras are flipping out to get some
- 11:34great selfie lighting and then when I
- 11:36mention the selfie lighting again I want
- 11:38to see that example and I'll do the same
- 11:40thing drag and drop flipping out to get
- 11:43some great selfie lighting so as I'm
- 11:45going through and placing Boll I
- 11:47actually want to show two different
- 11:49clips at the same time and kind of do a
- 11:51split screen effect so here are my two
- 11:54different shots I have one with no
- 11:56lighting and one with lighting what I'm
- 11:58going to do is just kind of drag these
- 12:00one on top of the other and what I can
- 12:02do is select the clip up top and I
- 12:04canjust my position by grabbing up this
- 12:07y slider and I can adjust the height
- 12:11then if I go down here to the cropping I
- 12:14can actually open up this tab and I can
- 12:16crop the bottom off it's about the
- 12:19Midway point there select on the other
- 12:22clip and just drag the positioning down
- 12:24a little bit lower and I'll just go back
- 12:27and forth and adjust it till it's about
- 12:30right and that is a very easy way to do
- 12:33a split screen effect if you want to
- 12:34show multiple frames at the same time so
- 12:37that is my b-roll plac one thing you'll
- 12:39notice is right here I actually don't
- 12:40have a b-roll shot covering this but one
- 12:43thing you can do is if you do have a
- 12:45jump cut is you can go to the next clip
- 12:48and you can actually just scale this up
- 12:50a little bit more and this will kind of
- 12:52make it feel like you're shooting with
- 12:54multiple camera angles so if I play this
- 12:57back handy this thing is super these it
- 12:59just flow a little bit better it also
- 13:02helps too that I have a product I'm
- 13:03showing and if I cut away doesn't really
- 13:05feel too jarring all right so we got our
- 13:08a roll in our b roll place this is
- 13:10basically what I would classify as a
- 13:12rough cut now it's time to add some of
- 13:14that special seasoning what I mean by
- 13:16that is adding some text so for this
- 13:18shot in particular because I have a
- 13:21split screen showing two different
- 13:23options side by side it'll be important
- 13:25to label them so people know what
- 13:27they're looking at so to add text to
- 13:28your video video we're going to go all
- 13:29the way to the top here and click on the
- 13:31effects panel and we're going to type in
- 13:35text and we can just pull in this simple
- 13:37basic text and just drag it right on top
- 13:41we can trim this up to the side so it
- 13:43fits nice and neat in this text box we
- 13:45can type in let's say no light and then
- 13:48I can adjust the font the size the color
- 13:52anything I want to I'm basically going
- 13:53to scroll down and find our think media
- 13:57font which is helvetica with our font
- 14:00selected we can adjust the sizing and
- 14:03then we can scroll down here and adjust
- 14:05the positioning so that appears right
- 14:08where we want it so I think that looks
- 14:10pretty good now I want to create a new
- 14:12text file for the bottom clip and one
- 14:15quick way we can actually just save some
- 14:17time is to duplicate this so I'm going
- 14:19to hold down option and select and drop
- 14:22this and that will duplicate that clip
- 14:25and now I can change this text so I'm
- 14:26just going to type in eloni lm9
- 14:29and again let's adjust that positioning
- 14:32be right around here one thing that is
- 14:35super important when you are creating
- 14:37reels or shorts is making sure that you
- 14:39don't have any text that's being cut off
- 14:42because a lot of these platforms have
- 14:44tons of little icons that appear on
- 14:45screen so I found this YouTube short
- 14:48overlay just on Google so I'm going to
- 14:50use this to make sure I don't cut
- 14:53anything off so I'm going to make a
- 14:54little bit of room here I'm just going
- 14:56to reach down for this middle bar so I
- 14:58can have a little bit more room up top
- 15:00click this drag it above everything and
- 15:03let's just stretch that out as you can
- 15:06see with that overlay sure enough the
- 15:08ulanzi text is a little bit cut off so I
- 15:12actually want to adjust this and maybe
- 15:15I'll even put the text slightly above or
- 15:19I might even have to just fully adjust
- 15:21my image that's why it's really good to
- 15:24know what platform you're on and what
- 15:27are the overlays that might affect your
- 15:29video now at any point in editing you
- 15:31might actually want to get rid of this
- 15:33so you can actually see what your video
- 15:35will look like so one thing you can do
- 15:37is just right click on this file and we
- 15:40can actually click enable clip if I
- 15:43uncheck this it will disable it so this
- 15:45will show what the video looks like
- 15:47again you can have a keyboard shortcut
- 15:49for this mine is set to D so I can just
- 15:52toggle that on and off so I know that my
- 15:54text is not going to be cut off or I can
- 15:56turn it off and see what my video will
- 15:58look like all right so we added text for
- 16:00that specific shot but you might
- 16:02actually want captions throughout your
- 16:03video well fortunately denture resolve
- 16:06Studio has a great caption feature in
- 16:08order to create captions what we want to
- 16:10do is go all the way up here to select
- 16:13timeline create subtitles from audio and
- 16:16I'm just going to leave this at the
- 16:18default settings click create it's going
- 16:20to take some time to initialize and
- 16:22transcribe our video so take a cup of
- 16:25coffee get a little break before we come
- 16:26back to this
- 16:29[Music]
- 16:30all right so now a subtitle track has
- 16:32appeared above our video and if I play
- 16:34this back as you can see the text
- 16:36appears on screen so we can actually
- 16:39dial this in a bit further because
- 16:41chances all their default doesn't quite
- 16:43look good so one thing we can do is we
- 16:46can go over here to the subtitle and I
- 16:49like to adjust this by the track because
- 16:52I want to get all my text in the proper
- 16:55position so I can adjust the scale of
- 16:58this I can change the font perhaps and
- 17:02that's going to apply to every text File
- 17:05versus if you were left on caption it's
- 17:08only going to change that specific one
- 17:10so now if I play my video back have you
- 17:12ever gotone to film a video with your
- 17:13phone only to we have some very basic
- 17:16captions on screen and I think these
- 17:18work really well in a pinch one thing
- 17:20you might notice is all these empty gaps
- 17:22one thing I do like to do is just kind
- 17:24of extend those out so there's always
- 17:27captions on the screen you can always go
- 17:29in here and adjust each caption
- 17:31depending on how many words you want it
- 17:34so you can really get exactly what
- 17:36you're looking for but I think for
- 17:37pretty much default settings these look
- 17:39pretty decent with the a roll the b roll
- 17:41and now our captions on our video the
- 17:44next step is to add in some music for
- 17:46this video I pulled a song I liked from
- 17:48epidemic sound I'm just going to ahead
- 17:50and drag that into our project again I
- 17:53can create a new bin called music drag
- 17:56that in there keep it all nice and and
- 17:59organized now we're going to bring this
- 18:01music into our timeline so I'm just
- 18:03going ahead and drag and drop and the
- 18:06first thing we'll notice if I play this
- 18:07back well that's where this ulanzi
- 18:09magnetic selfie the music is just a
- 18:12little bit too loud so we want to do is
- 18:15click on our music track go up here to
- 18:17the volume if you don't see this page
- 18:19make sure the inspector is clicked on
- 18:22and we want to go down here and lower
- 18:24the volume way down I recommend starting
- 18:27at -30 for this particular track I set
- 18:30it to -37 and this is a good volume so I
- 18:33can hear myself clearly but adds just a
- 18:36nice little bit of ambient so we have a
- 18:38nice flow to our video when you're
- 18:40editing a short or real one thing you
- 18:42want to keep in mind is the fact that
- 18:44shorts and reels Loop so having the
- 18:47right music that is nice and will loop
- 18:50on its own or there is one trick that I
- 18:53do like to use one thing I'll do is grab
- 18:55onto the music kind of bring this first
- 18:59section in like so and then let's cut
- 19:02the end off our video right
- 19:05here just click command B delete I will
- 19:10duplicate this
- 19:12track right next to it so it just fits
- 19:15right on the other side I'll bring this
- 19:17clip
- 19:18forward and we'll fade this on both ends
- 19:23what will happen is the track will fade
- 19:25out and it will introduce the beginning
- 19:28of the the video so you have a much more
- 19:31seamless audio Loop in your video and if
- 19:34you want D Vinci resolve to preview your
- 19:35video as a loop what we can do is Select
- 19:38o on our timeline at the end of our
- 19:40video select o and then I'll go and
- 19:43press this little icon right here if I
- 19:46play this back we should get a nice loop
- 19:48our favorite gear for making better
- 19:49content have you ever got to film a
- 19:51video with your phone not too bad with
- 19:53the music now set at the right volume
- 19:55and giving it a little bit of a loop we
- 19:57are now reached the last last and the
- 19:59final step and that is to export our
- 20:01video now before we go to the deliver
- 20:04tab one thing we want to make sure we
- 20:06have set in the edit tab is our in and
- 20:09out points so I like to make sure that
- 20:12the out point is Right aligned with the
- 20:14last bit of the video you can just
- 20:16select o on your keyboard and that will
- 20:18create an outpoint and then at the
- 20:21beginning of your video just make sure
- 20:23it starts at the very beginning that way
- 20:26you don't have any empty space before
- 20:28before and after your clip now you don't
- 20:30want to skip this step because there are
- 20:32some very important settings that we
- 20:34need to change before we save our video
- 20:37let's go ahead and run through these up
- 20:39top we have the file name so again let's
- 20:42just type in eloni
- 20:44lm9 short and then I'm going to choose a
- 20:48location and I recommend saving this to
- 20:50the exact folder that we created earlier
- 20:52but I like to create a new folder called
- 20:55exports click create and we'll go ahead
- 20:57and Save you want to double check and
- 20:59make sure that the render is set to
- 21:01single clip for the format I like to
- 21:03leave this at quick time in the codic
- 21:06h.264 for Mac you can also do MP4 if you
- 21:10are on Windows as we go down to
- 21:12resolution you can see this is set to 4K
- 21:15in vertical you could change this to
- 21:161080p if you prefer that you just want
- 21:19to make sure that you have used vertical
- 21:21resolution set and for the frame rate
- 21:23you want to make sure this matches what
- 21:25you recorded on camera so for me I was
- 21:27shooting 23 3976 or 24 frames per second
- 21:32if you are shooting on your phone
- 21:33chances are you're probably shooting at
- 21:3530 frames per second for the rest of
- 21:37these settings I'm going to leave by
- 21:38default now there is one really sneaky
- 21:41setting that I often Overlook and I
- 21:44wonder why does my video have no
- 21:46subtitles if you have the same issue go
- 21:48down to subtitle settings export
- 21:51subtitle and change the format to burn
- 21:54into video this way your subtitles
- 21:57actually appear on on your video just
- 21:59take you a moment to double check and
- 22:01make sure that all your settings match
- 22:03what is on screen the very last step we
- 22:05want to do is Select add to render q and
- 22:07then click render all and
- 22:10congratulations you edit a short inside
- 22:12to Vinci resolve I hope you guys enjoyed
