  1. 0:00welcome to Lesson Four in this lesson
  2. 0:01we're going to explore the site's unique
  3. 0:04conditions and we're going to look at it
  4. 0:06from a very broad contextual Insight all
  5. 0:09the way to a very immediate condition of
  6. 0:12the site in order to do this we'll
  7. 0:13examine the site at two scales the first
  8. 0:16scale at 1 to 2,500 and then we'll be
  9. 0:18zooming into 1 to 500 this will be to
  10. 0:21capture both the immediate surroundings
  11. 0:23and the broader context highlighting the
  12. 0:25project constraints and opportunities
  13. 0:27that will influence the design I will
  14. 0:29then take you through the step by-step
  15. 0:30process of stylizing the site plans
  16. 0:32turning layers on and off adjusting lme
  17. 0:35weights hatches and fills uh adjusting
  18. 0:38the colors in order to make sure that
  19. 0:40you're showing the correct information
  20. 0:42the relevant information at each
  21. 0:47scale so looking at the site at a 1 to
  22. 0:502500 scale as you can see here I've put
  23. 0:53together a bit of a kind of graphic
  24. 0:56drawing that breaks down the information
  25. 0:58um into the relevant and important
  26. 1:01information that we want to show at the
  27. 1:02scale as I've discussed the site is
  28. 1:05located in a prominent location close by
  29. 1:07to the local town of of PR Sands with a
  30. 1:10beautiful beach and we've got very good
  31. 1:13access for the site via these main road
  32. 1:16so you got the packet lane and then
  33. 1:18you've got the
  34. 1:19a394 linking the site making it a really
  35. 1:22great location and a really accessible
  36. 1:25location by vehicle to the local town
  37. 1:28prand and in this drawing I've also
  38. 1:30indicated where these uh precedence or
  39. 1:33not precedence but the local vernacular
  40. 1:36is um located and where these
  41. 1:38architecture features are located um
  42. 1:41just as a graphic tool to kind of
  43. 1:42highlight and and call out some of these
  44. 1:44features of the drawing and now in this
  45. 1:47drawing we've got a couple key features
  46. 1:49that I wanted to express so of course
  47. 1:52the location is a significant feature
  48. 1:55showing the the kind of proximity of the
  49. 1:58site to prand and it's relationship also
  50. 2:01the access of course indicating with
  51. 2:03this red dotted line and then the
  52. 2:06Contours is a significant feature of
  53. 2:09this drawing indicating that this is
  54. 2:11quite a severe slope there's a strong uh
  55. 2:15change in levels and that this is
  56. 2:17sloping down towards the beach and we
  57. 2:20didn't want to overwhelm the drawing
  58. 2:21with too much information and so this is
  59. 2:23a kind of a good level of information
  60. 2:25required for this drawing now let me
  61. 2:27show you how you can import a d
  62. 2:30into rayon and break it down to this
  63. 2:33level of detail so the first thing that
  64. 2:35we're going to do is head up to the
  65. 2:37leftand corner and click the menu tab
  66. 2:40we're going to click import and then
  67. 2:42DWG and then we're going to head down to
  68. 2:45our site model so the 1 to
  69. 2:482,500 and what it's going to do is it's
  70. 2:50going to process the model and import it
  71. 2:52at the exact scale of that drawing and
  72. 2:55then it'll appear with this set scale
  73. 2:57tool and this is essentially trying to
  74. 2:59help you Define the correct scale and to
  75. 3:02kind of help the software pick up on the
  76. 3:04right scale so what it would do is it
  77. 3:06will highlight a certain area with this
  78. 3:08blue line and it'll give you a few
  79. 3:09options to make sure that you are
  80. 3:11defining the correct scale for the
  81. 3:13drawing so for example we can estimate
  82. 3:15that this is about 100 m and then it
  83. 3:18will instantly assign the right scale to
  84. 3:20the drawing so we're going to click 100
  85. 3:22m we're going to click import and then
  86. 3:24it will come up with a pick insertion
  87. 3:26point which we're going to select and
  88. 3:30then simply drop into the model now this
  89. 3:32is just a process of breaking this
  90. 3:34drawing down into the relevant
  91. 3:36information as you can see this has a
  92. 3:38lot of detail that we won't require at 1
  93. 3:41to 2500 scale especially at the kind of
  94. 3:44graphic level and the clarity that we
  95. 3:46want to show in our site analysis so
  96. 3:48things like this with the kind of
  97. 3:50Contour tags all of these tags that we
  98. 3:53have even the colors we want to make
  99. 3:54sure we have a consistent color scheme
  100. 3:56now when you come over to the left hand
  101. 3:58side you will see this layer is Tab and
  102. 4:00as you can see you've got the import
  103. 4:02here which is essentially the DWG that
  104. 4:04we've just imported and if you click the
  105. 4:06drop down you will see that all of these
  106. 4:08layers are broken down so every item in
  107. 4:10your model will live on a layer and
  108. 4:12whatever layer that you draw on or
  109. 4:15active layer that you draw on will be
  110. 4:17the the kind of layer that your object
  111. 4:20or polyline or shape or whatever it is
  112. 4:24that will be assigned to the active
  113. 4:26layer now what I'm going to start doing
  114. 4:27is I'm literally going to start
  115. 4:29switching off some of these layers so
  116. 4:31got building text we don't want uh we
  117. 4:34want General text turn off uh we've got
  118. 4:38water text so any real text we don't
  119. 4:40really need they're not relevant and
  120. 4:43then what we're going to start doing is
  121. 4:44maybe a land form line we can turn off
  122. 4:47we don't really need that I would also
  123. 4:48spend some time just kind of deleting
  124. 4:50some of the geometry that I don't
  125. 4:52believe required um a lot of this
  126. 4:55landfill area or general lines we we
  127. 4:58don't really need so now I'm going to
  128. 5:00start styling the drawing by changing
  129. 5:02the line weights changing the color
  130. 5:03fills changing the line fills and this
  131. 5:06is a process of selecting the geometry
  132. 5:09heading over to the style section on the
  133. 5:11right hand side where you can affect
  134. 5:13pretty much any aspect of your canvas
  135. 5:15the line weight color fill Etc this is
  136. 5:18where you'll have a list of styles that
  137. 5:20are assigned to uh the polyline or
  138. 5:23geometry or shape that you have selected
  139. 5:25in your model so let's go ahead on this
  140. 5:27right hand side we're going to select
  141. 5:29edit St
  142. 5:30we're going to change the stroke to
  143. 5:33let's say gray and as you can see all of
  144. 5:35the contour lines that also have that
  145. 5:37same style have also changed to that
  146. 5:40light gray and to be honest we're going
  147. 5:41to make it even lighter because we don't
  148. 5:43want it to be too prominent in the
  149. 5:44drawing so let's drop that maybe like so
  150. 5:48so you now got a nice subtle contour
  151. 5:50line on the drawing I'm now going to
  152. 5:53apply the same principles throughout so
  153. 5:55for the hatch color for the landfill
  154. 5:58we're going to maybe also change this to
  155. 6:00quite a light gray as you can see I'm
  156. 6:03then going to change the water to maybe
  157. 6:06a hatch so we're going to head down to
  158. 6:08the fill option we're going to select uh
  159. 6:10so you've got solid texture hatch or
  160. 6:12image uh the texture is something that
  161. 6:14we'll go into a little bit more detail
  162. 6:16further down the line when you're adding
  163. 6:18certain textures to your kind of floor
  164. 6:21plans and giving it a realistic tone as
  165. 6:24you can see here you can make your way
  166. 6:26through all of the textures but for this
  167. 6:28instance we're going to go over to hat
  168. 6:30um and I really enjoy adding hatches to
  169. 6:32my drawings adds a real kind of graphic
  170. 6:35element to the drawing so I'm going to
  171. 6:36head down scroll down to maybe
  172. 6:38oblique uh we're going to then change
  173. 6:41the scale of the hatch so you can come
  174. 6:43down click edit head over to scale we're
  175. 6:46going to bump that up to maybe
  176. 6:4810 and voila you now have a hatched
  177. 6:51water but it looks a little bit too
  178. 6:53strong it's a little bit too dominant in
  179. 6:55the drawing so we're going to select it
  180. 6:57we're going to change it once again head
  181. 6:59into the Hat and we're going to change
  182. 7:00the stroke to a light gray once again so
  183. 7:03it's a little bit more subtle so I think
  184. 7:05at this stage the drawing is getting
  185. 7:07there but it's still a little bit too
  186. 7:08dense it's far too much information uh
  187. 7:11especially these building lines or or
  188. 7:13these kind of just general lines they're
  189. 7:15a little bit too heavy and I think to be
  190. 7:16honest let's just turn them off so then
  191. 7:18the roads are a little bit more
  192. 7:19prominent we can then obviously change
  193. 7:21the style of those roads to a bit more
  194. 7:23of a lighter gray the next step is to
  195. 7:26trim some of the edges crop it down so
  196. 7:28that we've got a nice knee Edge and in
  197. 7:30this instance you can use a poly line
  198. 7:33you can use any shape uh that you wish
  199. 7:36but I'm going to use the circle I'm
  200. 7:38going to place the circle so that we
  201. 7:41have our site located and the town
  202. 7:44center located in View and then we're
  203. 7:48going to come down to the editing tools
  204. 7:49we're going to first make sure that the
  205. 7:51shape is selected so the shape that we
  206. 7:53want to trim to come down and we're
  207. 7:55going to select trim so the shortcut is
  208. 7:57TR and this would just be the case of
  209. 7:59trimming the image down and anything any
  210. 8:02lines that are intersecting with that
  211. 8:04shape it will trim it and this will just
  212. 8:08be spend a bit of time doing this and
  213. 8:11you'll come to something like this which
  214. 8:12just looks a lot neater now the final
  215. 8:14few bits I'm going to add to this
  216. 8:16drawing is going to be highlighting the
  217. 8:18main access roads uh so this is just
  218. 8:21going to be a simple case of using the
  219. 8:22polyline tracing over these main access
  220. 8:25roads trying to be as accurate as
  221. 8:28possible with then to come down to the
  222. 8:30stroke we're going to change it to quite
  223. 8:32a thick stroke so maybe even 25 mil
  224. 8:36maybe even bigger let's go 50 I'm going
  225. 8:39to go with a red and we're going to
  226. 8:41change it to a dash so if you select at
  227. 8:44the bottom here you can select the
  228. 8:46different line types so you've got all
  229. 8:48of these different options and I'm
  230. 8:50actually going to do maybe let's do a
  231. 8:53DOT and then we're going to add an arrow
  232. 8:55head to it so we're just going to draw
  233. 8:57our own Arrow Head and you'll arrive at
  234. 9:00something like this where we have the
  235. 9:02kind of main roads highlighted got a
  236. 9:04punch of red in there so it's a nice
  237. 9:06graphic tool so everything's obviously
  238. 9:08black and white a nice kind of soft gray
  239. 9:10and then we've got a nice kind of bold
  240. 9:12Touch of red if you've seen a lot of my
  241. 9:15work you'll notice that I do like a
  242. 9:16punch of red in my
  243. 9:18drawings and the final thing to add to
  244. 9:21this drawing is going to be some
  245. 9:23annotation um highlighting these areas
  246. 9:26but also doing the call outs for the
  247. 9:28local vernacular and some of the
  248. 9:29architectural features that I've picked
  249. 9:31up in the local area so what I'm going
  250. 9:32to do is I'm going to find the building
  251. 9:34on the map I'm going to come down here
  252. 9:36I'm going to
  253. 9:38draw a kind of point that is pointing
  254. 9:41to that part of the map so we'll do it
  255. 9:44as like a dark gray we're then going to
  256. 9:46draw a call out using the polyline so
  257. 9:48we'll do something fairly rough like so
  258. 9:51click enter change that also to a
  259. 9:54lighter
  260. 9:56gray and then we're going to draw a
  261. 9:58square which we're going to drop the
  262. 10:00image in so if you hold down shift
  263. 10:02you'll get an
  264. 10:04even we might want to scale that up
  265. 10:07that'll be a case of importing the image
  266. 10:10and going through this process as I've
  267. 10:12discussed you then want to scale that
  268. 10:15down to the
  269. 10:20square position it so it's fairly
  270. 10:22centered double click into it using this
  271. 10:25toggle bring it into the square so we're
  272. 10:27kind of cropping it down and you
  273. 10:29eventually end up with something like
  274. 10:31this once you spend some time cleaning
  275. 10:32up the drawings and this is our one 12
  276. 10:352500 drawing that indicates the relevant
  277. 10:38information at the scale and highlights
  278. 10:40the key features that we want to show so
  279. 10:42now let's dive into 1 to 500 now at 1 to
  280. 10:45500 we want to show a much more kind of
  281. 10:48local site analysis the more local site
  282. 10:51conditions opportunities and constraints
  283. 10:54and how we're going to respond to the
  284. 10:57immediate site conditions and the
  285. 10:58immediate kind of neighboring existing
  286. 11:01buildings Etc so this is the drawing
  287. 11:03that we're kind of going to end up with
  288. 11:05uh as you can see here you got the site
  289. 11:07with the site boundary uh we've got some
  290. 11:09kind of symbols and hatches that are
  291. 11:11indicating some textures and areas of
  292. 11:15kind of grassland or kind of farmyard uh
  293. 11:18we've got all our site analysis looking
  294. 11:20at the Sun Path the prevailing wind and
  295. 11:22then obviously some of the key site
  296. 11:24conditions such as views towards the sea
  297. 11:27um and then going in a little bit more
  298. 11:28detail looking at the public and private
  299. 11:31zones and so with the site analysis the
  300. 11:33main things that we want to focus on the
  301. 11:35Sun Path prevailing wind basic kind of
  302. 11:38environmental features but then views
  303. 11:40plot access and public versus private so
  304. 11:43I'm now going to take you through the
  305. 11:44process of how we can put together a
  306. 11:46drawing like this so once again it's
  307. 11:48going to be a process of importing the
  308. 11:50DWG and it'll be exactly the same
  309. 11:52process of breaking the drawing down
  310. 11:55into the key elements and features that
  311. 11:57we want to show making sure we have some
  312. 11:58of the tags turned off and essentially
  313. 12:01get to a point like this and now I want
  314. 12:03to show you two things that's going to
  315. 12:04add much more detail and make the draw
  316. 12:07is much more rich and layered so the two
  317. 12:10things I'm going to add is first is
  318. 12:12going to be trees and I'm going to show
  319. 12:13you how you can create your own symbol
  320. 12:15which you can then group and then
  321. 12:17populate throughout your drawing and
  322. 12:19then we're going to add hatches to show
  323. 12:20how you can show those those areas of
  324. 12:23farmland or grass or whatever those
  325. 12:25zones are but it also just adds that
  326. 12:27graphic element to your drawing and adds
  327. 12:28a bit more more
  328. 12:29detail so the first thing that we're
  329. 12:31going to do is once again head over to
  330. 12:33the layers and we're going to create a
  331. 12:35new layer called
  332. 12:39trees and now as you can see by having
  333. 12:42this button here highlighted this will
  334. 12:45indicate that it's the active layer and
  335. 12:47we want to make sure that whenever
  336. 12:48you're drawing anything and if you want
  337. 12:50it on a specific layer make sure that
  338. 12:52you have the active layer selected now
  339. 12:55this is just going to be a very simple
  340. 12:57case of me drawing a kind of symbol for
  341. 12:59a tree uh so we're going to make sure
  342. 13:02it's got no hatch we're going to do it
  343. 13:05as a light gray and then what I'm going
  344. 13:08to do is I'm going to find the center
  345. 13:09point which I can do like
  346. 13:13so by clicking and it will obviously
  347. 13:16snip to uh the edges of the circle and
  348. 13:19I'm now going to scale this down by
  349. 13:21heading down to the editing tools once
  350. 13:23again finding the scale tool which is s
  351. 13:26on the shortcut selecting the middle
  352. 13:29dragging it down so then we have a kind
  353. 13:31of Center Point for the tree and this is
  354. 13:34simply going to be my symbol for trees
  355. 13:36and usually when I'm applying vegetation
  356. 13:38to my drawings I like to keep them this
  357. 13:40simple so what I'm going to do now is
  358. 13:41I'm going to highlight those elements
  359. 13:43I'm going to come down to the bottom and
  360. 13:44I'm going to select group and what this
  361. 13:47has done now is you can change that to
  362. 13:50tree at the top right hand corner and
  363. 13:52then if you hold down alt you can then
  364. 13:54drag this across and populate across
  365. 13:56your drawings and you'll get something
  366. 13:58like this as you can see the tree is
  367. 14:00distributed across the drawing at
  368. 14:02different scales scaling up and down
  369. 14:05changing the line weight color uh to a
  370. 14:08nice light gray so it's not too
  371. 14:10dominating but it just gives a nice
  372. 14:12level of detail and an an extra kind of
  373. 14:15layer to the drawing now once again we
  374. 14:17want to make sure that we create a new
  375. 14:19layer called hatches we want to make
  376. 14:23sure that it's active we're then going
  377. 14:25to come down here and what I'm going to
  378. 14:27use is the polyline tool now I want this
  379. 14:29to be quite sketchy I don't want this to
  380. 14:30be too kind of specific and so I'm
  381. 14:33literally going to start drawing around
  382. 14:35these areas that I believe are a
  383. 14:39particular kind of Zone whether it's
  384. 14:41kind of farmyard or whether it's trees
  385. 14:43and I'm just going to very quickly and
  386. 14:47crudely kind of go around the edge and
  387. 14:49the idea of reason why I'm kind of doing
  388. 14:51this so sketchy is as you see when you
  389. 14:54add the hatch it will give it a nice
  390. 14:56layered look and it won't look too kind
  391. 14:58of precise but instead it will look like
  392. 15:00a more of a kind of diagram so now once
  393. 15:02we've closed the poly lines that's a
  394. 15:04really important thing to note you want
  395. 15:06to make sure the poly line is closed you
  396. 15:08come down here to the fill once again
  397. 15:10you got your four options you got solid
  398. 15:12color which you could do a solid red
  399. 15:14you've got texture or you've got hatch
  400. 15:16and the hatch that we're going to use is
  401. 15:19going to be this dashed oblique and I
  402. 15:21think this is a really nice hatch to use
  403. 15:23I'm going to head down to edit I'm going
  404. 15:25to scale this up to maybe five or maybe
  405. 15:28a little bit more we go seven and I'm
  406. 15:31also going to change this color to a
  407. 15:32nice light color so it's not too
  408. 15:34dominating and one thing we're going to
  409. 15:36do is we're going to turn off the stroke
  410. 15:38because we don't want to see that and
  411. 15:39there you go You' got a nice area
  412. 15:43outlined and what I'm going to do is I'm
  413. 15:45going to distribute this across the
  414. 15:46drawing once again so do a very similar
  415. 15:49thing where I'm filling some of these
  416. 15:51zones once again super
  417. 15:53sketchy and then going to use the same
  418. 15:57hatch as before
  419. 15:59but I'm going to change the scale so
  420. 16:01that one was I believe seven I'm now
  421. 16:04going to change this to 10 so then
  422. 16:06you've got a
  423. 16:07variety in the scales in the tones make
  424. 16:11sure the hatch is turned off uh the
  425. 16:13stroke is turned off and you can see
  426. 16:15that it starts just adding a bit more
  427. 16:17layer to the drawing it adds a bit more
  428. 16:19information bit more detail and texture
  429. 16:22and we're going to populate this across
  430. 16:24the drawing as part of this lesson and
  431. 16:26the course in general you will have
  432. 16:28access to templates to blocks that you
  433. 16:31can use for your drawings the templates
  434. 16:33will help you as you make your way
  435. 16:35through the course but also the blocks
  436. 16:37will help when you're creating your own
  437. 16:38drawings you can drop them into your own
  438. 16:40drawings um and use them as you please
  439. 16:43so as part of this lesson we have some
  440. 16:45blocks some site symbols that we're
  441. 16:47going to use for our site analysis and
  442. 16:49to annotate our drawings and so I
  443. 16:51already have a load of blocks ready for
  444. 16:55you guys to use and I'm going to show
  445. 16:57you here over on this left hand side we
  446. 16:59have if we open the layers tab you will
  447. 17:02see that we have something called
  448. 17:03canvases and this is something that I
  449. 17:04haven't discussed yet um and this is a
  450. 17:07really useful feature of rayon uh when
  451. 17:10you're building your drawings and adding
  452. 17:12this this kind of amount of detail and
  453. 17:13layers so canvases is a space in a model
  454. 17:16where things can be drawn so this here
  455. 17:19is a canvas and you can create multiple
  456. 17:22canvases within a model so you can see
  457. 17:24here we've got one canvas here and then
  458. 17:26another canvas are these site symbols
  459. 17:29canvas essentially carries its own
  460. 17:30settings units uh Styles line scales
  461. 17:35display settings Etc and you can create
  462. 17:37canvases by coming up to the top here
  463. 17:39clicking the plus button and doing model
  464. 17:42Canvas OR paper canvas and in this case
  465. 17:44I have these site symbol canvases and
  466. 17:47you can simply come into here you can
  467. 17:49select whatever features that you want
  468. 17:51to bring over into your model um you can
  469. 17:54right click them click copy and just
  470. 17:56drop them into your model so it's a
  471. 17:57really nice way of setting setting up
  472. 17:59multiple kind of workspaces in the same
  473. 18:01model now for this site analysis we have
  474. 18:03a range of site symbols that you might
  475. 18:06find really useful to add to your
  476. 18:07drawings so we have Public Access
  477. 18:09pession access we've got Legend symbols
  478. 18:11we've got height symbols North Arrow
  479. 18:13symbols scale symbols so we got scale
  480. 18:16bars we've got terrain symbols view
  481. 18:18range Etc we've got all of them in here
  482. 18:20so if you want to use any of these
  483. 18:22symbols you're welcome to so if I simply
  484. 18:25select it click copy bring it over into
  485. 18:27my model
  486. 18:29and you can see that it will paste into
  487. 18:32the canvas now with a bit of time
  488. 18:34annotating the drawings these are the
  489. 18:36key features that I've picked up on uh
  490. 18:38so we've got the site location we've got
  491. 18:40the site boundary of course we' got
  492. 18:41views we've got these kind of Trail
  493. 18:43markers indicating that there could
  494. 18:45potentially be a trail around here that
  495. 18:47we need to be sensitive of we've
  496. 18:49obviously got the Sun Path we've got
  497. 18:51prevailing wind and on this right hand
  498. 18:54side we have a slightly more zoomed site
  499. 18:56analysis to show a little bit more
  500. 18:58detail tell that is more relevant to the
  501. 19:00immediate analysis and the immediate
  502. 19:02existing buildings that surround so this
  503. 19:05is just a case of selecting this area
  504. 19:08cropping it down scaling it up and then
  505. 19:10the site entrance of course and then
  506. 19:12this really important relationship with
  507. 19:14public and private making sure that
  508. 19:16we're respecting our neighboring
  509. 19:17properties now this gives us a good base
  510. 19:20for us to move forward with the scheme
