How to Draw Millwork Shop Drawings, Faster! — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:02Welcome back to the Interior Design
- 0:04Playbook. We have reached lesson six of
- 0:06module one where the focus is on
- 0:07creating mill workshop drawings, one of
- 0:09the most detailed and important parts of
- 0:11your documentation set. In our last
- 0:13lesson, we worked on sections and
- 0:14elevations, learning how to draft them
- 0:16faster and present with more clarity.
- 0:17Today, like I said, we're shifting to
- 0:19mill work. We will cover the process
- 0:20step by step of designing and planning a
- 0:23built-in TV cabinetry unit in our living
- 0:25room space. First, we will plan the
- 0:27layout. Then we will draw detailed
- 0:28sections and elevations of the unit. And
- 0:30lastly, we'll add some material visual
- 0:32mood boards to convey our technical
- 0:34details as well as the overall design
- 0:36intent. As always, I'll be showing you
- 0:37how to do all of this right within Rayon
- 0:39Design with its smart presets, reusable
- 0:41blocks, and fast drawing tools. I can
- 0:43create precise, professional millwork
- 0:45drawings in a fraction of the time
- 0:46compared to traditional CAD tools. By
- 0:48the end of this lesson, you'll be able
- 0:49to create clear, consistent, and
- 0:51buildable mil workshop drawings that
- 0:53fabricators can trust and clients can
- 0:55get excited about. If you'd like to
- 0:56follow along, please feel free to create
- 0:58a free account if you haven't done so
- 0:59already and open up the template linked
- 1:01below. And if you want more personalized
- 1:03support, you can always book a
- 1:04one-on-one demo call with the Rayon
- 1:06team. As always, if you're finding this
- 1:08series useful, please like, subscribe,
- 1:10and comment with your takeaways. We
- 1:12would love to hear how you are applying
- 1:13this workflow to your own projects.
- 1:14Let's dive in. So, like I said, we're
- 1:17going to be diving deep into some shop
- 1:19drawings of this cabinetry, like this TV
- 1:22cabinetry unit inside our living room.
- 1:24And the first key question that you need
- 1:26to consider when designing um a living
- 1:28room cabinetry piece is are you going to
- 1:30be working with a supplier's modular
- 1:32system or designing a fully custom
- 1:34built-in? So with modular systems um the
- 1:37dimensions and the finishes are mostly
- 1:39predefined beforehand, which can really
- 1:42simplify the coordination. But with
- 1:44bespoke cabinetry and a TV unit, you get
- 1:47full design freedom. And that means that
- 1:50um there's more details that we need to
- 1:52align early on. So we want to start by
- 1:55confirming the layout, style,
- 1:57functionality with our client and for
- 2:00instance like how much storage is
- 2:01needed, how the TV will be integrated,
- 2:03the size of the TV, um whether they want
- 2:06features like open shelving, display
- 2:08niches or hidden storage. And then we
- 2:10will involve the carpenter, contractor,
- 2:12supplier to lock in those materials and
- 2:16hardware and any other details um that
- 2:18you might need to discuss. It is also
- 2:20the right time to coordinate with your
- 2:22electrical plan. So, your outlets, your
- 2:24cable management, and even integrated
- 2:26lighting are accounted for from the
- 2:29start. And finally, like I said, the TV
- 2:32size is probably going to drive a lot of
- 2:34this unit. So, we want to confirm the TV
- 2:37dimensions and any media equipment up
- 2:39front. Those are going to drive our
- 2:41cabinetry sizing and must be integrated
- 2:43precisely to avoid gaps, misalignments,
- 2:46or on-site modifications. And once all
- 2:48of those decisions are set, you are
- 2:50ready to begin drawing your bespoke
- 2:53living room unit. So I am here in our
- 2:55template document, which if you have not
- 2:57grabbed, you can still do so by clicking
- 2:59the link um below in the description.
- 3:01But we already have this drawing
- 3:04created. I'm just going to show you how
- 3:06to create the drawing from scratch. So,
- 3:08if you are in your paper canvas, which
- 3:10is where kind of like all of our
- 3:12documentation set lives, like all of our
- 3:14drawings live to be presented. Let's pop
- 3:17over to a model canvas instead of our
- 3:19paper canvas here. So, um if you're
- 3:22working in the same template, you can
- 3:23just go down to your mill workshop
- 3:24drawings uh canvas. If not, you can just
- 3:27hit the plus button and add a model
- 3:29canvas and just rename it mill workshop
- 3:31drawings and you can work directly in
- 3:32there. So, I'm going to pop over to this
- 3:34Millwork Shop drawing. So in here,
- 3:36everything is editable, selectable, and
- 3:39this is kind of like where we can make
- 3:41all the changes in that presentation
- 3:42space. That's just where they are being
- 3:44presented. So we'll go ahead and start
- 3:45with our top view. Um that's going to
- 3:46drive uh our elevations and our
- 3:49sections. Kind of similar to creating a
- 3:50floor plan. That usually comes first and
- 3:52then we draw our sections and elevations
- 3:54afterwards. So um I'll just pop over
- 3:57here into a blank space and show you how
- 4:00to just start drawing this from scratch.
- 4:02So, if you have a space in your floor
- 4:05plan or um you're trying to do like a
- 4:07little call out in your floor plan, you
- 4:09can always just add the floor plan in by
- 4:10going to the plus sign view and then add
- 4:13in your floor plan. I know that like for
- 4:16this specific instance, we are just
- 4:18going to be drawing like just a unit and
- 4:21I just already have the measurements.
- 4:22So, we're just going to start with our
- 4:24uh guides and our line tool to start um
- 4:27creating that drawing. To kick things
- 4:29off, we want to make sure that we are
- 4:31working on the right layer. So, let's go
- 4:34ahead and just we'll just create a new
- 4:36layer together. I might have a a good
- 4:37layer to work on over here, but we'll
- 4:39just create a new one. Um, so I'm just
- 4:41going to say TV unit. Um, and then
- 4:45underneath the TV unit, we'll do another
- 4:48layer for guidelines
- 4:51and then another nested layer for our
- 4:55actual drawing. So, we'll just say
- 4:57design.
- 4:59So, underneath guidelines, I'm just
- 5:00going to click the check mark to make
- 5:02that my um current layer. And you can go
- 5:05ahead and just grab one of these lines
- 5:07down here. Either a polyline, which
- 5:08would just allow you to click click
- 5:10click click um or a regular line, or you
- 5:13can even click this little arrow here
- 5:15and go to guideline. And what this is
- 5:16going to do is this is just going to
- 5:17like literally give you a straight up
- 5:20guideline. Um, and you can either like
- 5:23copy and paste those or if you place a
- 5:27guideline and you hit CC. Um, what
- 5:30that's going to do is if you click it,
- 5:32then you can go up or down and give it a
- 5:34dimension. So, like if I say like 1 in
- 5:37or something, it will allow me to just
- 5:39drop that guideline 1 in. So, this is
- 5:42going to end up coming in handy for when
- 5:43we're creating our sections and
- 5:45elevations from our floor plan. When you
- 5:47click guideline, you can also do a
- 5:49vertical one. So you would just click
- 5:50vertical there. Um and if you want to
- 5:53like click click click, you would just
- 5:55click the loop um button there. But we
- 5:58will end up using this probably for the
- 6:00sections for our floor plan. I'm
- 6:02probably just going to use like a
- 6:03regular line. So uh let's go ahead and
- 6:06just start with actually let's start
- 6:08with a rectangle. So I'll start by
- 6:11grabbing a rectangle down here. And I am
- 6:14going to just click and then uh drag my
- 6:18mouse out. Um, now I know that my width
- 6:20is going to be 13 feet, so I'll just
- 6:22type in 13 feet. Enter. And then I know
- 6:24that my height is one and a half feet,
- 6:26so I'll type in 1.5 feet. Enter. And
- 6:29that will create our nice little
- 6:31rectangle. So, we can also change the
- 6:33style of this. For instance, it looks a
- 6:35little bit thick. So, um, let's just go
- 6:38down to this. And we can also talk about
- 6:41adjusting the style of this whole thing
- 6:44um, here shortly. But um just for
- 6:47drawing purposes, I like to have a
- 6:48thinner line. So I know that all of my
- 6:52material, like all of the thickness of
- 6:53my material, whether it's like wood or
- 6:55whatever you're designing with, is going
- 6:56to be let's just say 1 in just for um
- 7:00ease ease of clarity. Um so I'm going to
- 7:04draw my back panel first. So let's just
- 7:06assume that like the wall is over here.
- 7:08So I'm going to just again grab my
- 7:11rectangle. And I just like using the
- 7:13rectangles when I can because these
- 7:15allow me to easily fill them later. So
- 7:18if I want to change the style or
- 7:19something. Um so for instance, I know
- 7:22our width needs to be 13 ft. So I'm
- 7:24going to say 13 ft. Enter. And then I'm
- 7:26going to say 1 in. Enter. Because I know
- 7:28that that is going to be um 1 in thick.
- 7:32So again, let's change our style. I'm
- 7:34going to actually just use my picker and
- 7:36just pick right there. And now you can
- 7:39kind of see that a little bit better.
- 7:40We've got our first like backboard of
- 7:43the unit. So then I'm going to work on
- 7:46kind of like the shelves going this way.
- 7:49So again, I know that it is 1 in thick.
- 7:53So we'll grab our rectangle. And I'm
- 7:54actually going to preemptively pick this
- 7:57so I can see it when I'm drawing. Um,
- 8:00okay. Go back to my rectangle. And now
- 8:03I'm going to go this way. And now I know
- 8:06that I want my width to be 1 in. So I'll
- 8:08hit enter. and I will just snap it to
- 8:12that. And so now I've got
- 8:15um another little piece of let's just
- 8:16say wood or something like that. So I'm
- 8:19going to basically copy this a few
- 8:21different times. I know that I want my
- 8:22shelves to be about 1 and 1/2 ft uh
- 8:25apart from each other. So I can just
- 8:27select this and do that CC and then
- 8:31click a spot and move my mouse in the
- 8:34direction I want it to go. And then I'm
- 8:36going to say 1.5 ft. Enter. And then
- 8:39I've just got to click to place it. Um,
- 8:42and then I can continually keep adding
- 8:44those. So, you know, if I if I know
- 8:46those are one and a half feet, then this
- 8:48next one would probably be 3 feet cuz
- 8:49we're just doubling that. Okay. And then
- 8:51I have to click to enter. And then
- 8:53lastly, it would be 4 and 1/2 ft cuz I'm
- 8:55just adding on another foot and a half.
- 8:57So, 4.5 ft. And then click. And then
- 9:00once you're done, just hit escape out of
- 9:01there. Hit done. And now we've got that
- 9:04started over here. Now, I do want to
- 9:06have one more of these over on this
- 9:08side. Plus, we need our little bookend.
- 9:10So, I'm just going to do a copy paste.
- 9:13Dock that right there. And then same CC
- 9:17situation. So, CC, then I'll just click.
- 9:20And then 1.5 ft. And then click to place
- 9:24it. And I'm going to hit escape. And now
- 9:26we've kind of got like the basic uh
- 9:29outline of our unit. So, our TV will
- 9:31basically be sitting in here. And let's
- 9:33just pop over to the already done one to
- 9:35kind of like reference that. So, um,
- 9:38it's looking pretty similar. You can see
- 9:39we've got our TV right there. Um, this
- 9:41one's just a little bit more stylized.
- 9:43We have some dimensions and we can talk
- 9:44about that here in a second. So, what
- 9:46you just saw me do was use our line work
- 9:48tools to outline the cabinetry for your
- 9:51TV unit. There are going to be different
- 9:52standards based on where you live as far
- 9:55as like how deep you want the unit to
- 9:57be, how wide it should be. So, just be
- 9:59sure that you are current on any of
- 10:01those dimensions. Um, you also want to
- 10:02make sure that you're planning for
- 10:03ventilation and cable management. So,
- 10:05these are just all things that you want
- 10:07to consider when you're coming up with
- 10:08these dimensions. So, now that we have
- 10:09this like basic top view, let's go ahead
- 10:12and use those guidelines again to create
- 10:15our front elevation. So, now we are
- 10:17going to go ahead and grab that
- 10:18guideline tool that I had mentioned and
- 10:20just click guideline. We want to make
- 10:22sure that we are on vertical and then I
- 10:25also want to be on loop because I want
- 10:27to just be able to click click click
- 10:28click to just add them. And you'll kind
- 10:30of see why in a second. So, I'm just
- 10:32going to go through here and literally
- 10:34just snap to each one of these. And what
- 10:37that's doing is that's giving me some
- 10:39solid guidelines to work with for our
- 10:42elevation that we are about to create.
- 10:44So, if I hit done, I can see that like
- 10:46my section is set up for success down
- 10:48here because uh this is exactly where
- 10:52all the panels are going to be sitting.
- 10:54And then of course when we get our TV in
- 10:55here and stuff too and any roughens then
- 10:57you can add more guidelines for that as
- 10:59well. So we want to just start by kind
- 11:01of like creating a box that's going to
- 11:03show this elevation. So I'm going to
- 11:05again grab that rectangle tool and I'm
- 11:09just going to select it doesn't matter
- 11:10like where um vertically. I'm just going
- 11:14to select a point. And now we want to
- 11:19make sure that we have our height. So I
- 11:20know that this is going to be 8 ft high.
- 11:22Um, obviously I know this is going to be
- 11:2413 ft wide. So I will type in 13 ft.
- 11:27Enter. And then I will type in 8'6 in.
- 11:31Enter. And then I'll hit done. So this
- 11:34is going to be basically like the
- 11:36elevation, like the start of our
- 11:39elevation. I like to just get that in
- 11:41there before I start drawing anything
- 11:42inside because it helps me just like
- 11:45understand it a little bit better. I
- 11:46like to start from the ground up. So I
- 11:50do like to like maybe grab my rectangle
- 11:52and then start with like my base down
- 11:54here. So obviously that's going to be 13
- 11:56ft wide. So 13 ft enter and then our
- 11:58base will be 4 in or our toe kick would
- 12:00be about 4 in. Then we will draw our
- 12:04like a little box for our cabinets. So
- 12:06I'm going to grab my rectangle tool
- 12:07again and we will make those about uh
- 12:11let's say let's just say 2T. So we'll do
- 12:1313 ft enter as our width and then 2 ft
- 12:17enter as our height. So then when you're
- 12:18done with that, hit done. And you know,
- 12:20these guidelines that we drew are not
- 12:22going to necessarily impact the
- 12:24cabinetry down here. That'll be like a
- 12:26different division, but it will help
- 12:27with the panels up here. So that's kind
- 12:29of why they're just like grayed out and
- 12:30dashed because they're just good for
- 12:32reference, but not necessarily going to
- 12:34help us with every single aspect of this
- 12:35elevation. Next up, let's say that we're
- 12:37going to have some sort of countertop on
- 12:39top of the cabinets. So again, I will
- 12:41grab my rectangle tool, and this one
- 12:44will be 13 ft wide.
- 12:48And then let's say 1.5
- 12:51in thick and then hit done. And we don't
- 12:55really have to worry about like any of
- 12:56the style right now. Like we could
- 12:58definitely make this like a realistic
- 12:59style eventually. I just want to show
- 13:01you kind of how to start drawing these
- 13:03so it makes sense. Let's also do another
- 13:06little panel here at the top to kind of
- 13:09like mimic our molding.
- 13:12So let's say this is going to be 13 ft.
- 13:14Enter. And then we'll say 4 in. Enter.
- 13:17And that will just kind of be like our
- 13:18little header.
- 13:20And then we can kind of start moving
- 13:22inward. So I will grab my
- 13:26rectangle tool again. And now I'm going
- 13:29to kind of start using these guidelines.
- 13:30I'm going to just trace these. And this
- 13:32is going to be the start of my panels up
- 13:34here. So I am just adding in my last
- 13:36couple of panels that way. And then next
- 13:39up, you can use those guidelines again
- 13:41to start creating divisions
- 13:44horizontally. So if you wanted to grab
- 13:48that guideline tool again and go in the
- 13:50horizontal, just click our guideline,
- 13:52click CC, and then click a point and
- 13:55then if you know these are maybe going
- 13:56to be 1 and 1/2 ft wide by 1 and 1/2 ft
- 13:58tall, then you would just type in, you
- 14:00know, 1.5 ft. Enter. And then click and
- 14:04then maybe again 3T. Enter.
- 14:07and so on and so forth. So like four and
- 14:09a half feet enter, then you can use
- 14:12those as your guidelines for then
- 14:14placing those horizontal panels. Again,
- 14:17the TV is going to drive some of these
- 14:19dimensions here. So if we know, for
- 14:21instance, that that's going to fit in
- 14:23this, you know, lower half of this
- 14:25section. Um, we can go ahead again and
- 14:27grab our rectangle tool and just kind of
- 14:30start mapping this out. So let's see
- 14:33here. That's 6' 10 in. Enter. And then
- 14:36what do we say? one inch thick and then
- 14:39done. Um, and then, you know, maybe we
- 14:41have another one. I'm just going to
- 14:42click CC. Click and then copy that up
- 14:46there and hit done. And it's starting to
- 14:50kind of like look like a TV unit. Now,
- 14:52when you're creating your sections, it's
- 14:54going to be very similar process. So,
- 14:57the sections are just going to basically
- 14:59clarify construction details. Now, this
- 15:01is where we might want to use our wall
- 15:03tool. Um, draw in a few extra details.
- 15:07Sections are really helpful at showing
- 15:08like a base cabinet with drawers to
- 15:11reveal some internal mechanisms. If
- 15:13there's like a TV recess, this will help
- 15:16show like mounting depth, ventilation,
- 15:18wiring, shelving units. It helps explain
- 15:21shelf supports, and other details with
- 15:24that. But you don't need a section of
- 15:26every single cabinet. just the areas
- 15:27where maybe like the elevation alone
- 15:29doesn't provide enough clarity. Uh we
- 15:31really just want to make sure that we
- 15:32keep it clean, focused, and practical um
- 15:35for the carpenter to understand because
- 15:37all of the tools that I have taught you
- 15:39here already are going to apply to your
- 15:42sections as well. I won't dive deep into
- 15:44creating a section with you. But after
- 15:46we kind of like add some blocks to this
- 15:48and stylize it a little bit, uh we can
- 15:50talk about some extra details that you
- 15:52can add in your sections and where to
- 15:54find those tools. So before we add our
- 15:56blocks in, feel free to just kind of
- 15:58keep detailing out this elevation
- 16:01however you want. Um I'm sure ours will
- 16:04end up looking a little bit different,
- 16:06but that's great. That's what it's
- 16:07supposed to be. So I'm just going to
- 16:09maybe add in another one of these. And
- 16:11of course, we want to leave our TV area
- 16:13open. So we'll scrunch that down. And
- 16:15then we will go ahead and pop into the
- 16:18block library because that's where we're
- 16:20going to find all of our blocks. And I
- 16:22am already thinking about which ones I
- 16:23want to use. um for sure want to grab a
- 16:26TV and then we also want to grab some
- 16:29base cabinets. Um and then additionally,
- 16:31just like any other extra um entourage
- 16:35that you might want to show. As always,
- 16:37you can import your own DWG or PDF um
- 16:40files from your suppliers for, you know,
- 16:43the accuracy of that design intent. Um,
- 16:46or you can even draw your own blocks in
- 16:48rayon. But we're going to go ahead and
- 16:49use a block library um, and just edit
- 16:52them to our needs because they have over
- 16:5510,000 blocks and usually they have what
- 16:58I'm looking for. So, let's just go to
- 16:59libraries and then we'll type in TV.
- 17:01Looks like they've got lots of TVs and
- 17:03TV units. So, we can just click on
- 17:05honestly any of these. Let's just click
- 17:07on this one. And I'm going to click the
- 17:08family and it's going to show me top
- 17:11view, front view, and then we also have
- 17:13like a nice little side view for the
- 17:15elevation if it ends up cutting through
- 17:16that area. So, I'm going to just go
- 17:18ahead and drag this TV over into our
- 17:19plan. And it's going to drop it right
- 17:21there. And then we can just kind of dock
- 17:23it where we know that we need it. So,
- 17:25this is kind of where you could again go
- 17:28and grab those guidelines. So, down
- 17:30here, I would just click on guideline
- 17:32vertical. And then I'm just going to
- 17:35click here and here. So that way I make
- 17:36sure that I place my TV correctly in
- 17:39elevation. So now when I drag this guy
- 17:42over here, I know exactly where to place
- 17:43it. So it'll go right there. And that's
- 17:46kind of how we start placing these
- 17:48blocks. So let's rinse and repeat that
- 17:50same process. I think that block is that
- 17:52TV block is the only one that we need
- 17:53for our um top view. But down here, um,
- 17:57we could, like I said, use a couple of
- 18:00base cabinets. And then we'll just like
- 18:02maybe look for like a vase or like books
- 18:04or something to just kind of convey that
- 18:05these are shelves. So, we'll go back
- 18:07over to our library and I'm just going
- 18:08to click on blocks here. So, I can just
- 18:10search and just type in cabinet door.
- 18:14Um, cuz that's really what we're looking
- 18:15for. So, I can see a bunch of cabinet
- 18:17doors over here. I'm going to go ahead
- 18:20and grab one of these wall cabinets. Um,
- 18:23just click on the family and then we'll
- 18:25just drag our elevation and drop it in
- 18:27here. Um, obviously this looks like it's
- 18:29probably like an upper cabinet. Um, but
- 18:31just to kind of like meet my needs for
- 18:33this moment, I'm going to flip it
- 18:34vertically. So now it looks a little bit
- 18:37more like a lower cabinet. And then I
- 18:40can just always scrunch it down to fit
- 18:42um, wherever I want it to fit. I can
- 18:44also widen it if I want to. I can then,
- 18:48you know, do my copy paste situation and
- 18:52just copy and paste these throughout.
- 18:54Um, now remember, if there's anything
- 18:56that you want to edit in one of these,
- 18:57you just have to click edit and like for
- 18:59instance, if I don't, you know, maybe
- 19:00want the door swings or maybe I don't
- 19:02want this hardware to show, um, I can
- 19:05just delete these out of here or I could
- 19:07even redraw it. And then you can see
- 19:08that it affects any other copies that I
- 19:10have in the model. So, that looks like a
- 19:13good start down there. And then lastly,
- 19:14let me show you how to go find something
- 19:16that's more decorative. So, if I just
- 19:18type in like vase or something. Um, we
- 19:21can say vase with plant. Go to family.
- 19:23And don't be uh worried when you just
- 19:25see like top views over here because if
- 19:27you click family, it'll take you into
- 19:29the block and it'll show you that
- 19:30there's actually more views. Let's just
- 19:32grab this front view. And then we can
- 19:34just go place this, you know, somewhere
- 19:35on a shelf to kind of indicate that that
- 19:38is a shelf right there. So, I've kind of
- 19:40finished filling out this bottom level.
- 19:43And um I just want to show you before we
- 19:46move on how to style this drawing. So
- 19:49it's going to be really similar to how
- 19:50we did it with the floor plan. This is
- 19:52kind of like when things get a little
- 19:54bit more fun because you can choose to
- 19:55go a little bit more realistic. You
- 19:57could choose to go um a little bit more
- 19:59basic. Just like how we've done before,
- 20:01we are just essentially going to create
- 20:02a style and then save it. So um you
- 20:05either going to choose like a texture,
- 20:07color fill, a hatch. Once you edit and
- 20:10create that style, then you can apply it
- 20:11to anything else. So, all you have to do
- 20:13is basically select um your shapes that
- 20:17you have already drawn. So, like for
- 20:18instance, we have um like all of these
- 20:22rectangles that we've drawn. So, we're
- 20:23just going to go over here and click on
- 20:25add fill. Um you can just make it a
- 20:27color, a gradient, a texture, um a
- 20:31hatch, or even an image that you upload
- 20:33yourself. You know, maybe this is like a
- 20:35wood panel or something. And then once
- 20:37you uh decide that you like that, then
- 20:40we would maybe hit save style. And I'm
- 20:43just going to say like, you know, panel.
- 20:45And then what you can do is go and, you
- 20:48know, make any other uh pieces that same
- 20:52uh style by just using your um eyropper
- 20:55or whatever. Now, if you do want to
- 20:58maybe indicate like a nice hatch or
- 21:00something on the background of this,
- 21:01maybe you're doing, let's say you're
- 21:03doing like a fun wallpaper or something
- 21:04for some reason behind this. So, we're
- 21:06going to go grab our rectangle tool and
- 21:08kind of like do that same thing that
- 21:10we've done before. And I'm going to just
- 21:11drop it there so I can make sure that I
- 21:13can still select it. But, um, let's just
- 21:15say that like you want to put like
- 21:16wallpaper or something on the back of
- 21:17this wall. Um, so this is where you
- 21:19would go to your ad fill, go grab a
- 21:21texture or a wallpaper. Go see if
- 21:23there's like some sort of, you know,
- 21:26fabricy type texture that we could do in
- 21:28here. So, yeah, like carpet. I don't
- 21:30know. Sure, why not? So, let's put this
- 21:33carpet texture right here. And then what
- 21:35we can do is we can uh adjust the size
- 21:38of this to meet our size. And then what
- 21:41we'll do is we'll go over in our layers
- 21:44under TV unit. You're probably watching
- 21:46this right now thinking like, why is
- 21:47this lady putting carpet in a TV unit?
- 21:50And that's a great question. We're not
- 21:52sure. Okay, I'm just going to move my
- 21:53guidelines up here because I forgot I
- 21:54drew these on guidelines. But anyway,
- 21:57what ends up happening is you can like
- 21:58select this and then you can even make
- 22:01it like a little bit, you know, less um
- 22:04opaque. And then it kind of like it
- 22:07starts showing like a little bit of a
- 22:08texture like maybe you've got like some
- 22:09like fabric wrapped wall panel or
- 22:11something behind there. I personally I'm
- 22:13a a very like realistic visual girl. So
- 22:16I like to try to like add in those um
- 22:19like those little pieces of realism when
- 22:21I can. And then again with these, you
- 22:23know, if you wanted to go back and edit
- 22:26this style and maybe you want this to be
- 22:28like a fill instead because we want to
- 22:30indicate that these are going to be wood
- 22:32or maybe let's just make them wood.
- 22:33Might as well. Let's just do it. So
- 22:35let's go here and then I'm going to go
- 22:37look for just like some sort of wood
- 22:40texture. Here we go. Wood. You know, you
- 22:43can do that same thing for these wall
- 22:45cabinets as well. And then for this um
- 22:48countertop and then, you know, if you
- 22:50want to draw in your shadows, you can
- 22:51use rectangles for that as well. Let's
- 22:53go ahead and pop back over to our
- 22:56finalized drawing. And you can see here,
- 22:58this is a little bit more of like a
- 22:59basic representation, but we've also
- 23:01added in our dimensions.
- 23:03We've got a top view with our top view
- 23:06of our uh monitor. And then over here in
- 23:09elevation, you know, this is indicating
- 23:12all of these uh cabinet doors. We've got
- 23:14a couple of little like entourage pieces
- 23:16just to kind of help show scale. Um, if
- 23:18you want to show more details about like
- 23:20the TV mount installation, this would be
- 23:22a good place to add notes as well. And
- 23:24if you'll remember from past lessons to
- 23:26add notes, you just grab that little
- 23:27leader line and then click click add.
- 23:30Um, as with everything, you would, you
- 23:33know, do it and then adjust your style
- 23:35or pick another style that you've
- 23:36already created in your file. Now, you
- 23:39can see here too that we have added um
- 23:42some more details on like the walls and
- 23:44the floors. So, in order to do that, and
- 23:46that's really similar with this section
- 23:47over here too that I was going to show
- 23:49you in a second, is you're just going to
- 23:51use the wall tool. So, similar to how we
- 23:53did those elevations and sections in the
- 23:55last lesson, um, we're just going to
- 23:56grab our wall tool. Now, you just want
- 23:58to make sure that once you do enter, you
- 24:02either create a new wall type or um edit
- 24:06an old wall type or something like that.
- 24:08Um I am going to go ahead and you can
- 24:10just say detach style and then you know
- 24:13for your thickness maybe you're uh you
- 24:16have like this concrete floor which is a
- 24:18little bit thicker. So maybe that needs
- 24:20to be like 12 in thick or something like
- 24:22that. Um and so that's how you start to
- 24:25do that. And then if you wanted to again
- 24:27have like a fill or something like that
- 24:29to indicate concrete, that's just
- 24:31everything that we've learned so far.
- 24:32You're just like rinse and repeating all
- 24:34of that. So, and then same goes here for
- 24:37uh the vertical walls as well. Um you
- 24:41can see like all this section stuff is
- 24:43the same kind of thing that we've
- 24:45already done. This is also a good thing
- 24:48to note for your sections when you're
- 24:50creating your sections after you've
- 24:51created your elevations. Um, super
- 24:54helpful again to grab those uh
- 24:55guidelines down here. So, if you go to
- 24:57your guidelines and then horizontal, um,
- 25:00you can see that if you just start
- 25:01placing those, that really helps drive
- 25:04what you're cutting through in your
- 25:06section. Like, it's it eliminates the
- 25:08guesswork and it just kind of like make
- 25:10sure makes sure that everything is
- 25:12aligned. Before we move into our mood
- 25:14board, um, I do want to just show you a
- 25:16couple of quick like annotation tools
- 25:17that you can use for sections like this.
- 25:20So, for instance, you can see like these
- 25:22little cutthroughs here and then um
- 25:24these little break lines. Let me just
- 25:26show you how to find those in the block
- 25:28library. So, back over here to our
- 25:30library. I'm going to go to title blocks
- 25:32and annotations. And here is where you
- 25:35can either like search for, you know,
- 25:36section or uh break line or something
- 25:40like that. And you'll see all this
- 25:41goodness pop up here. And you can easily
- 25:44just drag and drop that into your
- 25:46project. Um you might need to rescale it
- 25:48a little bit. like this looks a little
- 25:49bit small. So, we would just rescale
- 25:52that. These are kind of like typical
- 25:54annotations that you would use uh in a
- 25:56section to kind of just identify that
- 25:59like, okay, that's where this section is
- 26:01cut or that's where, you know, we're not
- 26:03looking any further in that wall um
- 26:05section. It's just we're cutting it
- 26:07right there. So, um that's a typical
- 26:09symbol to show. And then uh also with
- 26:12these little uh section cuts as well,
- 26:15you can also just draw your own like
- 26:17just use your own lines um if you can't
- 26:19find anything that you like or again
- 26:21import your own as well. Now moving on
- 26:23to the mood board. This is kind of like
- 26:26where we bring the design to life. Uh
- 26:27we're going to just add a couple of
- 26:28visuals to show the look and feel of the
- 26:31different materials that we've chosen
- 26:32for um this specific space. You want to
- 26:36include your material samples like the
- 26:38finish, hardware, etc. Show the hardware
- 26:40style and add your appliance references.
- 26:43You can also include photos of like any
- 26:46other units online, like maybe
- 26:47inspiration photos from Pinterest or
- 26:49something. Anything that's going to help
- 26:50communicate the style and ambiance that
- 26:52you are aiming for. Um, this is
- 26:54especially helpful if you are working
- 26:55with clients who not be able to like
- 26:57read actual plans. Even if it's just
- 26:59like a floor plan, a section, elevation,
- 27:01maybe they can't read those super
- 27:02easily. So, it just helps to kind of
- 27:04like align your expectations and then
- 27:06you get buyin from everyone. So, with
- 27:09Rayon, um we've already seen this with
- 27:11our uh lighting lesson, our electrical
- 27:14lesson, but um in Rayon, you can easily
- 27:16drop your images directly into your
- 27:18page. And then we can use AI to either
- 27:21remove the background or upscale it. And
- 27:23so, I will show you how to do that real
- 27:24quick using an image from Pinterest. So,
- 27:27here's an image that I found on
- 27:28Pinterest that I really like. So, I'm
- 27:30just going to rightclick it and copy.
- 27:32And then we'll go back into our rayon
- 27:34design canvas. And I'm just going to
- 27:36click paste. So let's just go back over
- 27:38to a blank space. And we can just
- 27:40rightclick and paste. And that's just
- 27:42going to bring our, you know,
- 27:44inspiration image right in here. Now, if
- 27:46you did want to um upscale this, you can
- 27:49go to edit image and then you can click
- 27:52upscale. Um also, if you want to like
- 27:55kind of create a little collage of
- 27:56items, you can always uh hit remove
- 27:59background. And then what that's going
- 28:01to do is that's going to like
- 28:02automatically remove the background. You
- 28:03don't have to use any other tools like
- 28:04Photoshop or anything to do that. So,
- 28:06let me just show you how to bring
- 28:08something like that in. So, let's just
- 28:10say that I found this piece of hardware
- 28:11that I really like. And I'm just going
- 28:12to copy it and bring it in. I will go
- 28:14ahead and rightclick and paste. And now,
- 28:17if we want to kind of like create a
- 28:19little collage or something, obviously
- 28:21that's a little bit obnoxious that it's
- 28:22got like the white background on it. So,
- 28:24we'll just go ahead and go down to edit
- 28:26image and then remove background. and we
- 28:28will let AI do the work for us. And once
- 28:31that is removed, we'll hit done. And
- 28:33then you can see that I can just it kind
- 28:35of like turns it into a PNG almost. And
- 28:37then I can just like move it um anywhere
- 28:40and just kind of stack it on top of
- 28:42anything. So to wrap things up, I'm back
- 28:44in my presentation space. And as always,
- 28:45I'm going to show you how to place all
- 28:47of this on a sheet of its own. So we
- 28:49will just create a whole new page. Over
- 28:51here under layers, I'm going to say new
- 28:53page. And it's dropped us a new page. We
- 28:56are using A3 in this um demo model. So
- 29:00I'm going to just go to A3 and then once
- 29:03that's placed um we can go ahead and add
- 29:06in a view. So we'll go to layers view
- 29:09and then we'll go to milwork shop
- 29:11drawings. And what that's doing is
- 29:13that's basically just placing a view of
- 29:15some random area of that canvas which is
- 29:17totally fine because we can go to
- 29:19override and then go in here and just
- 29:21kind of like pan to where we want. So,
- 29:23let's just go zoom in to this um little
- 29:26area that we've kind of already set up
- 29:28with all of our complete drawings. You
- 29:30can choose whichever scale you like over
- 29:32here. So, um it's going to be different
- 29:35for everyone, but I'd say like a/ an
- 29:38inch to 1/4 in is pretty typical. Once
- 29:40you get it to the size that you want, um
- 29:42then you would just click done out here.
- 29:44And then we'll hold down our command key
- 29:46and just kind of scrunch this in so that
- 29:49way we only see what we want to see
- 29:51here. nothing else on that sheet. And
- 29:54then we'll get it placed wherever. Um
- 29:56you can always add in your title block.
- 29:58Uh if you just wanted to do, you know,
- 30:01one or two or just like, you know, a top
- 30:03view or something, then you can do that
- 30:05same thing. Just hold down your command
- 30:07and like you can make this a bigger
- 30:09scale. And that is essentially how you
- 30:11would get all these on their own sheet.
- 30:12Lastly, as always, if you are ready to
- 30:15export, you can just go to share or over
- 30:18here under like the hamburger menu, you
- 30:20would just go to export um and then you
- 30:22can either do image or PDF um and then
- 30:25either do all of your pages, just one of
- 30:27your pages and that will export
- 30:28whichever views you have selected to PDF
- 30:31and they will be ready to present. That
- 30:34wraps up lesson six of the interior
- 30:36design playbook. You have now seen how
- 30:37to plan a living room, integral
- 30:39cabinetry and TV unit, draft mill work,
- 30:42elevations and sections, and even pull
- 30:44together a visual mood board so your
- 30:46shop drawings can convey not only the
- 30:47design intent, but the technical aspects
- 30:49as well. With Rayon design, these
- 30:51workflows don't just become faster, but
- 30:53more consistent and professional, giving
- 30:55you drawings that fabricators and
- 30:57clients actually understand. In our next
- 30:59lesson, we will build on this foundation
- 31:01and move into one of the key aspects of
- 31:03interior design, how to streamline your
- 31:05schedules and ff sheets. As always, if
- 31:07you'd like to practice what we learned
- 31:08today, just go ahead and open up that
- 31:10free template linked below and give it a
- 31:11try. And if you want more personalized
- 31:13guidance, you can book a one-on-one demo
- 31:14call with the Rayon team anytime. You
- 31:16found this lesson helpful, please be
- 31:18sure to like, subscribe, and comment
- 31:19with your takeaways so we can hear how
- 31:21you're applying these workflows to your
- 31:22own projects. See you in the next
