How to Draw Millwork Shop Drawings FAST | Kitchen Cabinetry — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Hey, I'm David and in this tutorial I'm
- 0:02going to show you how to draw mill
- 0:03workshop drawings for kitchen cabinetry.
- 0:05Whether you're designing a kitchen from
- 0:06scratch or working with the supplers's
- 0:08catalog, your drawings need to
- 0:09communicate both the design intent and
- 0:11the technical detail clearly. I'll walk
- 0:13you through the process from planning
- 0:14the layout to drawing detailed
- 0:15elevations, adding sections, and finally
- 0:17creating a visual mood board to bring
- 0:19everything together. Through this
- 0:20tutorial, I'll be using Rayon Design,
- 0:22the fastest tool to create perfect
- 0:23architectural drawings that are both
- 0:25accurate and stunning. Create a free
- 0:26account to follow along with me and use
- 0:28the template showcased in this tutorial
- 0:30linked below. Now, let's dive in. Every
- 0:33kitchen design starts with a key
- 0:34question. Are you using a fixed system
- 0:36by a brand or supplier, or are you
- 0:39designing a custom kitchen? Start by
- 0:41aligning with your client on layout,
- 0:42style, and functionality. Then, loop in
- 0:45your carpenter or supplier early to
- 0:47agree on materials, hinges, and
- 0:49construction details. It's also the
- 0:51right time to coordinate with your
- 0:52lighting and electrical plans. so things
- 0:54like power sockets and under cabinet
- 0:56lighting don't get overlooked. Once
- 0:58these decisions are made, you're ready
- 1:00to get started. Let's begin with the top
- 1:02view using grid lines to lay out the
- 1:03footprint. Next, draw the front
- 1:06elevation to show how everything looks
- 1:07from eye level. Once your plans and
- 1:09elevations are done, add a few key
- 1:10sections to show critical construction
- 1:12details. Keep it clean and focused. Now,
- 1:15I'll show you how to draw this bespoke
- 1:17kitchen from scratch. We're going to use
- 1:19a combination of line work and blocks
- 1:21from the Rayon Library. But first, we're
- 1:23going to start with guidelines.
- 1:25Guidelines will help me map out what's
- 1:27available in this kitchen space. So, all
- 1:30I know about this kitchen is that it's
- 1:32620 cm wide from wall to wall. And I've
- 1:36put a guideline on the back wall. You'll
- 1:38see what I mean in a moment. Now, to map
- 1:41out the rest of our kitchen, I'm going
- 1:42to use more guidelines. So if you go
- 1:44down to the bottom and click guideline
- 1:46or you can click simply use the shortcut
- 1:48G and you can choose whether you're
- 1:51placing a horizontal, vertical, or a
- 1:54free uh guideline.
- 1:57And you can also toggle whether you're
- 1:59dropping one at a time or continuous
- 2:02ones. To show you what that means, if
- 2:04we're on continuous,
- 2:06you can simply keep clicking and drop as
- 2:10many as you like without selecting the
- 2:12tool again. I'm going to undo that,
- 2:14though. And if you're on once, then you
- 2:17just click and drop one at a time, and
- 2:19you have to click G again to drop your
- 2:21next one.
- 2:22Another way to do this, because I know
- 2:24the dimensions of what I want, is to
- 2:27simply select the guideline, and go to
- 2:30the copy, which is also shortcut CC. So,
- 2:34let's copy this. And I know that the
- 2:36first tall unit is going to be 100 cm.
- 2:40So, I can click, drag, type in 100.
- 2:44And there it is. Then I know that from
- 2:46the other side
- 2:49I want a tall cabinet that's 80.
- 2:53These are sort of like the book ends of
- 2:54my design.
- 2:56Once again, you'll see what I mean
- 2:57later. And I know that from the back
- 3:00wall, a standard countertop is
- 3:0565 cm deep. So, I just type in 65.
- 3:10And I also know that the larger uh the
- 3:14book ends that I talked about before,
- 3:15those will be
- 3:1880 cm deep.
- 3:22So now we sort of have a we have a guide
- 3:24to draw the kitchen. Now what we can do
- 3:26is add some more dimensions just to help
- 3:28us
- 3:29view everything. So using the dimension
- 3:32tool, we can dimension the countertop.
- 3:37You can also dimension the 80 cm depth
- 3:40of the cabinets.
- 3:47And
- 3:49we can dimension the
- 3:52100 cm here and the 80
- 3:56on the other end.
- 4:03And now we can also dimension the
- 4:05leftover in the middle which is 440
- 4:07which we can divide up later. That'll be
- 4:09part of our design. Now we're going to
- 4:11use lines to simply block out the
- 4:13elements of our kitchen. So go down to
- 4:14the rectangle tool and you can just fill
- 4:17in the elements as they appear from plan
- 4:20view. So we'll put the one book end
- 4:24there
- 4:26and the other book end on the other end.
- 4:32And then we're going to make our
- 4:33countertop which runs between the two
- 4:35bookends at a 65 cm depth.
- 4:40And then come to think of it, we're also
- 4:42going to need overhead shelves above the
- 4:44countertop. I think that would be nice.
- 4:46And so what we're going to do is
- 4:49duplicate this line. And these are going
- 4:52to be 33 cm deep. Checked these numbers
- 4:56before.
- 5:02And we'll draw another rectangle
- 5:05here. So, these are the overhead
- 5:06cabinets.
- 5:09It's hard to tell what this represents
- 5:11right now because we haven't stylized
- 5:12anything. It's just a line drawing with
- 5:14dimensions, but I'll show you how to
- 5:16stylize it really quickly and then
- 5:17things will start to make sense. Now,
- 5:19let's add blocks. You can import DWG or
- 5:22PDF files of your supplers's items for
- 5:24accuracy or draw blocks in Rayon. You
- 5:26can also use Rayon's block library and
- 5:28edit their blocks to match your needs.
- 5:30So, let's head over to the block panel
- 5:32over here. And as you can see, you can
- 5:35search any of Rayon's uh block
- 5:38libraries. You can type in things like
- 5:40fridge
- 5:43and you'll get a bunch of blocks of
- 5:44fridges. And these fridges will have
- 5:48multiple views. If you go into the
- 5:50family, you can see the plan view, the
- 5:52elevation view, the side view, front
- 5:55view. You can create your own blocks and
- 5:57share them with your teams through
- 5:59custom block libraries, or you can
- 6:00simply browse the 4,000 blocks that
- 6:03Rayon has. What I'm going to do now is
- 6:04go back to my blocks. These are the
- 6:06blocks that are already loaded into my
- 6:07project, which I've set up in advance.
- 6:10And here we have a refrigerator. This is
- 6:11the refrigerator we're going to use.
- 6:14It's been specified on this project. And
- 6:15I'm just going to drop it in. And as you
- 6:18can see, it fits nicely in this uh this
- 6:22module I've created. So what I can do is
- 6:25simply drag it into this book end that
- 6:27I've already drawn.
- 6:31And when we send it to the back layer,
- 6:35it's inside of the shelf.
- 6:38By dragging all of these blocks in
- 6:39first, you can make sure that you've
- 6:41drawn your drawing to scale and with
- 6:43proper space to accommodate for
- 6:45everything in your kitchen.
- 6:47Now, let's fast forward a bit. I've
- 6:48dropped a few blocks in. So, we have a
- 6:50sink and a stove and a dishwasher. And
- 6:53now, we're going to stylize the drawing
- 6:55so that these white spaces feel a bit
- 6:58more like what they actually are, which
- 6:59is cabinets and countertops.
- 7:03So, let's start by selecting. Let's
- 7:05start with the book end. And let's give
- 7:08it a color. So, I have a color already
- 7:11chosen here, and I'm going to paste it
- 7:12in. And it looks quite dark. So, let's
- 7:15bring the opacity down to 35%.
- 7:19And great, that's our cabinet color. And
- 7:23now that we've set up this cabinet
- 7:24color, what we can do is save it as a
- 7:26style.
- 7:29I'm going to type in cabinet.
- 7:32Press enter.
- 7:36And now I can apply that style to the
- 7:39other cabinets. Holding shift, I can
- 7:41select multiple. And I can say replace
- 7:43all with cabinet.
- 7:49Next, let's do the countertop.
- 7:52So, I'll select it and go to fill. And
- 7:56let's give this one a texture to show
- 7:59exactly what it is. So, you can you can
- 8:02upload your own texture or you can pick
- 8:04from Rayon's library. I have already
- 8:06uploaded one here called Terraso.
- 8:11And as you can see, this is a texture,
- 8:13so it looks a little bit like a
- 8:14countertop.
- 8:16It's a nice way to represent it and help
- 8:18people understand your drawing. Once
- 8:20again, you can do the same thing. You
- 8:22can save this style
- 8:26countertop.
- 8:31And now the cool thing with styles is
- 8:33that if you select one of these and
- 8:35let's say you want to change it, you can
- 8:37go to the style and you can edit the
- 8:40style and everything using that style
- 8:43will change. Let's just go a little bit
- 8:44more orange. And as you can see,
- 8:46everything changes. So you have great
- 8:48control over your drawing. I'm going to
- 8:50undo that though because I like that
- 8:52color.
- 8:54Now let's move to the elevation view.
- 8:56I'll show you how to add some tiles.
- 8:58I've already drawn a rectangle where the
- 8:59tiles are going to go. So here and above
- 9:02the shelf, two separate fills, but I've
- 9:05already assigned a style called tiles to
- 9:07them. So what I can do to easily make
- 9:11them look like tiles is edit this style,
- 9:14remove the fill, and replace it with a
- 9:18hatch.
- 9:20And in Rayon, we have a square 600x300
- 9:24that look like tiles
- 9:27and they're a little bit big. So what I
- 9:29can do is transform them and scale them
- 9:31down.
- 9:33Maybe 0.25 looks pretty good.
- 9:38You can add a background.
- 9:50Now we have a stylized elevation drawing
- 9:52created entirely in rayon. No importing
- 9:54or exporting between Photoshop or
- 9:56Illustrator. Everything is done here
- 9:58with full control. Using the same tools,
- 10:01we can create our sections.
- 10:04Here's a section I already drew using
- 10:05the exact same tools I've already
- 10:07outlined. Simply rectangles with styles
- 10:11and blocks from the rayon library. Now,
- 10:14to add one final touch to this drawing,
- 10:16let's show the back wall in sections so
- 10:19that the drawing makes sense. Once
- 10:22again, we head to the rectangle tool
- 10:25and we're going to go from the back of
- 10:28the kitchen and draw a wall that is
- 10:348 cm thick.
- 10:37We'll deal with the height later. Let's
- 10:40drag the top to the top of our drawing
- 10:44and let's move it
- 10:472 cm away.
- 10:50Uh so that there's a gap between the
- 10:52wall and our kitchen. And this wall is
- 10:56actually it's a structural wall. So it
- 10:58will go down to structural floor.
- 11:02And then we can take this floor finish
- 11:04and pull it back.
- 11:08Now to show the materiality of the wall,
- 11:11we can simply go to the styles. And I
- 11:14already have loaded into the project uh
- 11:18concrete fill.
- 11:21For the second wall, I'm going to show
- 11:23you another method for drawing a wall,
- 11:24which is of course the wall tool.
- 11:27Can simply drag a wall.
- 11:33And what we're going to do is choose the
- 11:36thickness of the wall here on the right
- 11:38hand panel. So we can put in 7 cm. We
- 11:41can choose the location line. So, let's
- 11:43align it to the right. And you can
- 11:46change the stroke and the fill, but what
- 11:48we have right now is pretty good.
- 11:50Actually, we don't need to use styles
- 11:52because this is a simple wall. Let's
- 11:53simply align it with the existing wall
- 11:57and then move it 1 cm away.
- 12:03Now, we can drag the bottom to the
- 12:06floor. Next, let's add some insulation.
- 12:09We're just going to take the line tool
- 12:12and drag a line
- 12:14in the center of the wall.
- 12:19And what we can do is click on the line
- 12:21and change the line type.
- 12:24And what Rayon has is if you go into
- 12:26dash
- 12:29and if you go to the bottom
- 12:31there is an insulation batting line
- 12:34type. You can also use the search bar
- 12:36and type in bat.
- 12:38And we can choose one of these.
- 12:43And we can adjust its size. We can
- 12:46adjust its fill. Let's make it a little
- 12:48bit gray.
- 12:51And of course, once you have something
- 12:53that you like, you can save it as a
- 12:56style. So we can say insulation.
- 13:02Save it. And then we can use this
- 13:03anywhere in our project.
- 13:06Now the final step is to take the
- 13:10section break
- 13:12and duplicate it,
- 13:16rotate it.
- 13:19And we'll set it up at the top of the
- 13:20wall and bring
- 13:25arrange it. Bring it to the front. And
- 13:28when we pull up the second wall, now it
- 13:31looks like everything's being cut off
- 13:32properly, just as it would be built. And
- 13:34here's our section. To bring the design
- 13:36to life, add a visual mood board that
- 13:38shows the look and feel of the kitchen.
- 13:40Include material samples like the
- 13:41cabinet finish, countertop material, and
- 13:44backsplash. Show the hardware style, and
- 13:46add appliance references. You can also
- 13:48include mood photos of complete kitchens
- 13:50to communicate the style and ambiance
- 13:52you're aiming for. This is especially
- 13:54helpful if you're working with clients
- 13:55who might not read plans easily. It
- 13:57helps align expectations and get buy in
- 13:59from everyone. In Rayon, you can drop
- 14:01images directly onto your layout page
- 14:03and use AI to upscale or remove their
- 14:05backgrounds. Here's how.
- 14:08Let's add an image to this mood board.
- 14:09So, first we head over to Pinterest. We
- 14:11type in chair. We find one we like.
- 14:15You can simply copy any image from
- 14:16Pinterest. Now, we can go back to Rayon
- 14:19and simply paste.
- 14:21And there it is. Let's scale it down.
- 14:27[Music]
- 14:29and we can put it on our mood board. But
- 14:30you can see it doesn't really fit very
- 14:32well because of the background. So,
- 14:34let's just get rid of that. No Photoshop
- 14:36required. Rayon can handle all this.
- 14:38Just go to fill image and there's an
- 14:41edit button here.
- 14:44Now, you have the option to use the AI
- 14:45editing tools, which include upscaling
- 14:47and removing the background. But for
- 14:49now, we're just going to remove the
- 14:50background. Simply click it and the AI
- 14:53should do all the rest. Awesome.
- 14:59Click done. And there's our chair. And
- 15:01we can put it anywhere on the mood
- 15:03board. And the background is now
- 15:05transparent.
- 15:08And the mood board is ready to go. Now,
- 15:10let's turn everything into a
- 15:11presentation ready drawing set. As you
- 15:14can see, I've drawn everything on the
- 15:15model canvas, but for a presentation, we
- 15:18want everything on the paper canvas, so
- 15:20it's properly to the scale of a piece of
- 15:22paper. Let's make a paper canvas. So we
- 15:24can call it paper canvas
- 15:26and let's create a page. So we're going
- 15:29to start with A4 which was automatically
- 15:32made.
- 15:34So now that we have a page, we need to
- 15:35put a view to the model canvas on it.
- 15:38Click the view button and drag a view
- 15:41window
- 15:43and it automatically selects the model
- 15:45canvas because we only have one. If we
- 15:48had multiple they would appear here.
- 15:51Uh first let's get first let's set the
- 15:53scale. So for these drawings we want a 1
- 15:56to 50 scale which is typical scale for
- 15:58milwork drawings. And then you can
- 16:00double click inside the window and
- 16:04simply pan over to your drawing to
- 16:08get everything you want in view.
- 16:11Click done. And the scale still at 1 to
- 16:1450.
- 16:16Looks good. You can move it around. And
- 16:18now we want to add a title block. So,
- 16:20let's head to the block panel.
- 16:23So, you can of course look through
- 16:24Rayon's libraries for title blocks. You
- 16:27can type in title
- 16:29and there's a whole title block section.
- 16:32And we just need to look for one that's
- 16:33A4 size
- 16:38and dragged it onto the canvas.
- 16:42And as you can see, it's already scaled
- 16:44for an A4 because it knows how big it's
- 16:46supposed to be. And there's our page. So
- 16:49let's call this page.
- 17:02Now that we've laid out our page, we can
- 17:04actually duplicate the whole thing
- 17:11using the copy button.
- 17:15[Music]
- 17:17And we can call this page section.
- 17:23And we can click in the view and simply
- 17:26pan over
- 17:28to capture all of our sections.
- 17:32Hit done.
- 17:52[Music]
- 18:03Now we have our presentation ready. Of
- 18:06course, normally we would update the
- 18:07information in the title block, but for
- 18:09this presentation, I'm just going to
- 18:10show you how to export the presentation
- 18:13from here. First, what you're going to
- 18:15want to do is go to the pages tab. And
- 18:17here you see all of your pages. And
- 18:20luckily, they are in order. But if you
- 18:22wanted to change the order, simply drag
- 18:23and drop. But
- 18:27as a typical milwork package, we want to
- 18:29start with the plans and elevation, then
- 18:32the sections, then the mood board. Now,
- 18:35we can close the panel and simply click
- 18:37preview. Rayon will open the preview in
- 18:40a separate tab.
- 18:44And here's your milwork presentation.
- 18:46All three pages.
- 18:51When everything looks good, you can
- 18:52click publish.
- 18:54And now your project is ready to share
- 18:57with others. You can now copy the link
- 18:59and send it to anyone through an email
- 19:01or on Slack. Clients and collaborators
- 19:03can view it right in their browser and
- 19:05leave feedback directly on it. No more
- 19:07exporting zipping files, uploading to
- 19:09drives, or chasing revisions. just one
- 19:11link and you're done. Or if you want to
- 19:13do it the old school way,
- 19:16you can go to menu and export the whole
- 19:18thing as a PDF and it'll do all three
- 19:21pages or you can even export each page
- 19:24one by one. That's how you draw complete
- 19:26mill workshop drawings for kitchen
- 19:27cabinetry using rayon. Everything in one
- 19:29place, drawing, annotation, imagery, and
- 19:31presentation. You can work faster and
- 19:33deliver a set that's both beautiful and
- 19:35buildable. If you'd like to give it a
- 19:37try, you can download the free kitchen
