How to Draw Architectural Drawings 2x Faster with Rayon — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, I'm Chris, an architect and
- 0:02educator based in the UK. In this
- 0:04tutorial, I'll be showing you how to
- 0:06create architectural drawings two times
- 0:08faster with Rayon Design. We'll start by
- 0:10importing a basic floor plan and then
- 0:12layer on information like walls, zones,
- 0:15and blocks. We'll create a distinctive
- 0:17stylized drawing, completing your
- 0:19drawing set in an incredibly streamlined
- 0:20way. You can follow along by signing up
- 0:23for free and using the drawing linked in
- 0:25the video description. So, let's get
- 0:27started.
- 0:29So you can create a free Rayon account
- 0:31at rayon.design and get started from
- 0:33there.
- 0:35So starting in the workspace, this is
- 0:37where you can import your DWG PDF or
- 0:40even an image file to trace over. So
- 0:42we'll go to import. We'll find our DWG
- 0:46that's been provided. Hopefully that
- 0:48sits on my desktop. We'll go to open.
- 0:51So it takes a little minute just to
- 0:52convert the model and then import it
- 0:54into a temporary space.
- 0:58And there we've got it, our site plan
- 1:00and our building model. So the next step
- 1:03is to pick two known lengths. So I'm
- 1:05going to zoom into the floor plan. And
- 1:08for example,
- 1:10at the moment the drawing is coming in
- 1:11saying that door is 90 m, which I know
- 1:15is probably not quite correct. So I'm
- 1:17going to click on the first point, click
- 1:18on the next point, and say actually that
- 1:20should be 90 cm, which makes a lot more
- 1:23sense. So we do that. We'll press
- 1:25continue. And then that will rescale the
- 1:27drawing.
- 1:29Import that into our model space. And
- 1:32there we have a 90 cm door. And I'll
- 1:34just double check that with our
- 1:36dimension tool. Ding ding. And that's
- 1:40coming up as 90 cm. So that's imported
- 1:42perfectly. Okay. So now that our DWG has
- 1:45been imported, we need to lock that. And
- 1:48then we can trace over it with our rayon
- 1:50wall tool. So we'll we can see the DWG
- 1:54here. So all these lines are on
- 1:56different layers. So we can go over to
- 1:58the left hand side, go to the layer tab.
- 2:00The zero layer is where our drawn
- 2:03information will be. So all of these
- 2:04layers below are what came in as part of
- 2:07the DWG import. So we can highlight all
- 2:09of those and press lock. That means that
- 2:13when I move over them, I don't start to
- 2:15interact with them. The other helpful
- 2:17thing that I can do
- 2:20is hide them if I want. So, we'll just
- 2:23undo that. And then we can start to use
- 2:25our wall tool. So, I'll create a new
- 2:28layer. Call that walls
- 2:33and get started. Okay. So, we can get
- 2:35started with the wall tool. So, one
- 2:38thing I just want to do to start with is
- 2:40flick our cm to millimeters because
- 2:44that's the way my brain works. Um, and
- 2:47we'll zoom into the floor plan. And we
- 2:49can see here that there are two types of
- 2:51wall. There's an external wall and then
- 2:53there's an internal wall. So, our
- 2:57external walls are 300 mm, very
- 3:00sensible, and our internal walls are 100
- 3:03mm. So, the really great thing that we
- 3:06can do in Rayon is set up wall types.
- 3:09So, their types of styles. So, I can
- 3:12draw a wall here. I'll just draw two
- 3:15walls to start with.
- 3:17Here we go.
- 3:19So, we'll call this wall
- 3:21[Music]
- 3:23number one. We'll change our thickness
- 3:25to 300.
- 3:27And just for the sake of clarity, I'm
- 3:29going to make that red.
- 3:31Um, and on the second wall that's
- 3:34already at 100. And I'm just going to
- 3:37make that green for clarity.
- 3:42[Music]
- 3:45And we can save that as a style. So if
- 3:48we go to the plus sign and we then call
- 3:50that external
- 3:52wall. Press enter. And the same thing
- 3:55with this one. Save the style. We call
- 3:57that internal
- 4:00wall. Here we go. Then we have these two
- 4:04wall types set up. And then we can just
- 4:07go over to styles
- 4:10and we can see them here in our wall
- 4:13styles. And that means that whenever I
- 4:15draw a new wall
- 4:19[Music]
- 4:20here, for example, I can then switch
- 4:23between the styles and say actually I
- 4:25wanted that as an external wall or
- 4:27actually I wanted that as an internal
- 4:28wall.
- 4:30So you don't have to mess about changing
- 4:31your lines. You just need to change your
- 4:33styles. So let's just clean that up and
- 4:38we'll start to trace our external walls.
- 4:57There we go.
- 5:00And then we can start drawing our other
- 5:02walls. So I actually want that as a
- 5:06internal wall. There we go.
- 5:20Then we can draw our internals.
- 5:29These obviously snap nicely
- 5:32to each other.
- 5:37Perfect. Oh, we actually have three
- 5:39types of walls. Very interesting. So,
- 5:44let's just say we draw that as an
- 5:46example in our internal wall type.
- 5:53Now, we're going to detach the style
- 5:55from that because otherwise that would
- 5:57change the um internal wall type. And
- 6:00I'm going to say actually I want a 600
- 6:03mil wall. And I'll change the color to
- 6:07blue for example.
- 6:09Um and I'll create a new style. You see
- 6:12that pop up there. And we'll call that
- 6:15fireplace
- 6:18wall for example.
- 6:20And then if you wanted to apply that
- 6:22one, we just click on the wall, go to
- 6:24the little swatch tool, click on that.
- 6:26There we go.
- 6:31So, you can see there all the walls have
- 6:34been drawn. They're all nice and neat.
- 6:39Um,
- 6:41and as I said before, we can then go
- 6:43back into our layers and then just hide
- 6:47the background just to check what we've
- 6:48drawn.
- 6:51Okay, so now I've got these walls drawn.
- 6:53I want to go back in and have a look at
- 6:56the styles. Try to make a uh a bit more
- 6:59of an aesthetically pleasing drawing. So
- 7:01I can see my three wall styles here. And
- 7:04I can say actually I want to edit those
- 7:06styles. I don't really want a solid red
- 7:09wall. So I can go into texture or hatch.
- 7:12So I'm going to go into hatch. And you
- 7:14can see it immediately swaps out um the
- 7:18hatch for that. So, I could change this
- 7:20to a hatch pattern or a cross-hatch
- 7:23pattern. Maybe let's let's do a
- 7:25cross-hatch pattern. Um, you can change
- 7:27the opacity. Um, and you can change the
- 7:31scale
- 7:32um of what you're doing. So, at the
- 7:34moment it's a one scale. So, maybe at
- 7:382 for example,
- 7:41we go that and that obviously
- 7:42automatically affects all of those
- 7:44walls. So, we'll go into internal wall
- 7:47again. We'll change the style. Go to
- 7:49hatch. Maybe I want that as just a
- 7:53hatch. And then again, let's change the
- 7:56size.
- 7:58You can see that there.
- 8:04Maybe the
- 8:06fireplace one for the last time.
- 8:09[Music]
- 8:11Maybe that wants to be a concrete thing.
- 8:14So again, just change the scale of that.
- 8:19So there we've got our sort of three
- 8:22styles and they obviously get saved into
- 8:25the um into the system and we can use
- 8:29those throughout so we have some level
- 8:30of consistency as we're drawing. Okay.
- 8:33So now I've got the walls drawn. Let's
- 8:36have a look at the zones. So zones are
- 8:38really about creating a space or a room
- 8:41um which is bounded by the walls. So we
- 8:44can go into our zone tool which is just
- 8:47down the bottom here. Actually maybe
- 8:48let's just hide our back layers. So
- 8:52we've got a bit of clarity. So here we
- 8:55go. So this is all that drawn
- 8:57information.
- 8:59We can create a zone very easily by just
- 9:01hovering over a space and it will
- 9:03automatically register what's being
- 9:05bounded by um walls. So we can say a
- 9:11zone here
- 9:13and create one here.
- 9:20So those are all our spaces which have
- 9:22been formed into zones and you'll see
- 9:24the little t um the little text note
- 9:28which automatically calculates the area.
- 9:33Okay. So with those zones, we can do the
- 9:35same thing that we did with the walls
- 9:37and create um a style. So we can click
- 9:40on one of them, maybe let's say on the
- 9:42living space, for example. We can change
- 9:46we can create a new style. We'll call
- 9:48that um timber floor for example.
- 9:53We'll change the hatch on there. maybe
- 9:58change it to
- 10:00um
- 10:02let's give it a nice herring bone
- 10:04pattern. We'll probably knock back the
- 10:06opacity a little bit so it's not quite
- 10:08as in your face.
- 10:19There we go.
- 10:22And that is saved as a style again. So,
- 10:25for example, I could pick a style,
- 10:29swatch that one, and again, it will copy
- 10:31that style across. But, in fact, I
- 10:33probably want um these uh what look like
- 10:38bathrooms and um utility spaces to be a
- 10:41separate style. So, again, we can create
- 10:43a new style. We'll call that uh tiled
- 10:45floor.
- 10:47Again, we'll change our hatch, change
- 10:50the opacity down,
- 10:54and then we can pick a swatch,
- 11:00go from there.
- 11:02So, the next thing to do is to start
- 11:04naming your zones, which kind of helps
- 11:06when you're tagging things out. So,
- 11:10think about the label as a tag, which is
- 11:12reading from this space. So if I click
- 11:14on this actual zone, I can change the
- 11:16name of the zone to garage
- 11:20and that will come out in the tag.
- 11:23Similarly, office
- 11:29call this one utility
- 11:33WC.
- 11:36Now what about if I wanted to swap this
- 11:40very large zone into kind of two spaces?
- 11:43So there isn't a wall there, but I can
- 11:45put in something called a zone divider.
- 11:47So this allows me to kind of create a
- 11:50break between two areas. And you'll see
- 11:54there the minute that line is put in,
- 11:59it sees that as a separate space. So
- 12:02this is now tagging this room as one
- 12:05space and I've lost the zone on the
- 12:06other. So I can again create a new zone
- 12:09there. And I want to call that one um
- 12:12lobby for example. And maybe that has a
- 12:16completely different style. So call that
- 12:19one um timber floor two.
- 12:26So we can change the opacity again. We
- 12:29have a nice horizontal floor in there.
- 12:34So again, just like before, we can go
- 12:36into our style window and we can find
- 12:38those styles that we've just created. So
- 12:40they're just here, timber floor, timber
- 12:42floor 2, tiled floor. And we can go into
- 12:45any of those and say, actually, not sure
- 12:48about that herring bone pattern.
- 12:51Um,
- 12:54want to something a bit jazzier. So here
- 12:56we go. And then that automatically
- 12:57changes to any of those zones that are
- 12:59tagged like that. And
- 13:03if we forget to do that, we can just add
- 13:06a note. Um, and there we have it. All
- 13:10the areas easily calculated and all the
- 13:13zones patterned as we like. This is a
- 13:16really kind of helpful thing that we can
- 13:18change those styles on a different type
- 13:19of drawing. So I could color code those
- 13:22zones if I wanted um to indicate
- 13:24different things like different ceiling
- 13:26types, different floor types um all just
- 13:30through the sort of tagging and the
- 13:31styles.
- 13:33So we've drawn out our basic walls um
- 13:35and now we'll put in some doors and
- 13:36windows just to illustrate how you do
- 13:38that. So we can go to our library. We
- 13:40can search for door.
- 13:43Um let's say we'll have this one. Select
- 13:47that. That just loads it. And then my
- 13:49little tool here, which is the insertion
- 13:51tool, allows me to populate doors
- 13:54wherever I want. So I'll click to um
- 13:56place it. And then it will give me the
- 13:58selection of which way I want it to
- 14:00turn. Inward, outward, left hand, right
- 14:02hand. Um so we can just populate
- 14:08like that. And we can do exactly the
- 14:10same thing with windows. So we go to our
- 14:11opening. Um
- 14:16we can change our block.
- 14:20So again go to window
- 14:25basic window. We can select and again
- 14:28that will insert it as we like. So we
- 14:32can just go around and uh populate the
- 14:35model um with all the uh required
- 14:37elements. I've just spent some time
- 14:40refining the drawing down and populating
- 14:41it with all the windows and doors. With
- 14:43the structure in place, we're now going
- 14:45to add blocks and annotations to the
- 14:47drawing to make it much more
- 14:48informative. Rayon's block library
- 14:50includes more than 4,000 top, side, and
- 14:53front view symbols. And you can even
- 14:55import DWG blocks, create your own, or
- 14:58curate libraries for easy access. Let's
- 15:01drop in some key elements and annotate
- 15:03them with dimensions and labels. So,
- 15:05let's get started with annotations. So,
- 15:08we'll create a new layer. Go over to the
- 15:11layer tab. Add new layer. Call it
- 15:15annotations. Make sure that one's um on
- 15:18the top so it can be read the most
- 15:20clearly. So, and you can see that it's
- 15:22selected by this little um tick. We'll
- 15:25go down to the tab down here. So,
- 15:27dimensions, this one in the middle.
- 15:30Click on it. Um, and just in basic
- 15:32terms, we can click one end, click the
- 15:36next, and we have this annotation line.
- 15:39So, this is in millimeters, which is
- 15:41what I like to see. Um, and you can see
- 15:44again here on the right hand side, we
- 15:47have a styles tab. So, we can edit that
- 15:49style
- 15:54[Music]
- 15:56that called dimensions. We've got it in
- 15:59a red color.
- 16:02We can change the type of arrow. Um
- 16:07[Music]
- 16:08on here,
- 16:10change the size of that. Um
- 16:15can even change the font if we felt like
- 16:16it.
- 16:20And then that's our dimension style. So
- 16:22again, that can be swapped out later if
- 16:23we choose to. Um, the other helpful
- 16:25thing with dimensions is that we can
- 16:28obviously do it as part of a chain. So,
- 16:32you will have a series of dimensions
- 16:33that you select as you go. So, let's
- 16:35click on chain. Um, and actually, I'd
- 16:38want to dimension
- 16:40where this door sits. So,
- 16:47without coming out of the tool, you can
- 16:50do your series of dimensions there.
- 16:54And then if I actually decide that I'm
- 16:56not quite sure about that end style, I
- 16:58can just go back in and
- 17:03change it for a simple arrow.
- 17:05So again, nice and easy, nice and quick.
- 17:10So with the dimensions already in place,
- 17:12we can now add a few blocks.
- 17:14So we'll go to the block tab, which is
- 17:16just under the layer tab on the left
- 17:17hand side. We can go to libraries. So
- 17:20there's a huge array of um different
- 17:22standard blocks that are included. Let's
- 17:24just have a look at the basic blocks
- 17:26which is this one here. So each of them
- 17:28come with um a series of different
- 17:30views. So we could drag in this dining
- 17:32table for example um
- 17:36[Music]
- 17:39and you can see there
- 17:41on this other side we also have um
- 17:44elevation views. So with and without
- 17:47furniture. So, I'll just add those just
- 17:48to show you how they look. But these
- 17:50obviously all correlate in terms of
- 17:52dimensions um with the top view.
- 17:56[Music]
- 17:57Similarly,
- 17:59there's a whole array of different um
- 18:02pieces of furniture that we can put in.
- 18:05Um so, we could start to populate the
- 18:07kitchen if we wanted to.
- 18:09[Music]
- 18:12And again, you can see if you click on
- 18:14this little purple button, there are
- 18:16side front section views.
- 18:22With the furniture in place, we can also
- 18:24add in things like annotations. So, if
- 18:27we just scroll down here,
- 18:30there's a tab called title blocks and
- 18:33annotations. This has things like scale
- 18:35bars, north arrows,
- 18:38um grid lines,
- 18:40section lines, elevation marks, all the
- 18:42sort of things that you would expect on
- 18:44an architectural drawing. So, we can
- 18:46obviously populate the drawing with
- 18:48furniture, but we can also add in
- 18:49helpful annotations. Um, so we just
- 18:52scroll down to title blocks and
- 18:55annotations, which is here. And this
- 18:58folder includes lots of different
- 18:59symbols um that you would typically find
- 19:02on an architectural drawing set. So
- 19:06example, let's find the window tag.
- 19:08Again, we can just drag and drop.
- 19:12Obviously, depending on the size of the
- 19:14drawing,
- 19:16we can adjust that to suit.
- 19:21And just like every other element within
- 19:23Rome, we can adjust um the style of
- 19:26that. So I can change the type of line.
- 19:36[Music]
- 19:39Can you say that wants to be red? Um
- 19:43maybe a little bit thicker.
- 19:49And similarly I can change the text. So
- 19:52again I can swap that for red example.
- 19:57Um and then I can copy and paste that
- 20:02and tag each window
- 20:05as I go.
- 20:10Similarly, we can add a north arrow
- 20:19[Music]
- 20:26to our drawing. And again, we just edit.
- 20:37We can just edit that down
- 20:43with our zones that we created
- 20:44previously. We can also edit the zone
- 20:46tags themselves. So if I click on the
- 20:48zone tag, I can create a new style
- 20:53called zone for example. And again I can
- 20:57change the color of the font.
- 20:59I can
- 21:02call my room living
- 21:05room.
- 21:09And for example, say I wanted that to be
- 21:12slightly larger. I can change
- 21:15the size of the font as well. And that
- 21:18obviously still reads um the overall
- 21:20area of the space.
- 21:23And you can really go as far as you
- 21:25like. If you look at the library um
- 21:27that's included, there's a whole array
- 21:29of different things um from, you know,
- 21:32electrical symbols for, you know,
- 21:34setting out your light sockets um and
- 21:37switches, um gym symbols, there's uh
- 21:41mechanical MEP symbols, things for
- 21:44kitchens, light fittings,
- 21:46um yeah, even stuff down to medical
- 21:48equipment and musical instruments.
- 21:55The really helpful aspect of the block
- 21:58library is that it's also searchable. So
- 22:00I can go to block, I can go to library,
- 22:02and then if I can't find what I want, I
- 22:04just search for it. So let's search for
- 22:06car.
- 22:07Even got a car charger.
- 22:10And I can drag and drop
- 22:12my car into the space.
- 22:15Similarly, if I wanted to add some
- 22:17vegetation around the house, I can just
- 22:18search for some trees.
- 22:22And just as before, it's a drag and drop
- 22:24feature. And we also have multiple views
- 22:28for our elevations if we choose to.
- 22:45If you keep going with the annotations
- 22:47and the blocks, your plan will start to
- 22:49look like this. So, lots of useful
- 22:51information. Windows are tagged,
- 22:53dimensions, labels on the rooms, areas,
- 22:57and even floor heights.
- 23:00And then once you've added all the
- 23:03blocks, you have a sort of fully
- 23:05furnished space which really comes to
- 23:07life um when people are looking at it.
- 23:09So, we've got an array of furniture.
- 23:11We've got all the sort of kitchen
- 23:12fittings, the stairs, vehicles, and the
- 23:14landscape.
- 23:17So, I've just spent a little bit of time
- 23:19finalizing the drawing and adding a
- 23:21title sheet. If you want to export the
- 23:23drawing, we need to create a page. So,
- 23:26we'll go to the little symbol on the
- 23:28left hand side of here, pages, we'll add
- 23:31a page, and then on the right side, we
- 23:33can adjust that size. So, we'll say it's
- 23:36an A Z page, and we'll call the scale 1
- 23:38to 50.
- 23:41And we'll drag that around our frame.
- 23:43And then that sets that drawing scale.
- 23:48With that page set up, we can then
- 23:50export the drawing. So, we'll just go
- 23:52over to here, the three little lines,
- 23:53menu, export, and we can export that as
- 23:57an image, a DWG or a PDF, which is what
- 23:59we want to do. And then you can see
- 24:01there, model canvas, page one. So, that
- 24:05will then create um our drawing.
- 24:09We can name it. So, we would call it
- 24:11drawing export.
- 24:15And we can even adjust the size.
- 24:19[Music]
- 24:20We'll go to export
- 24:22and then we'll choose a location. We'll
- 24:24just pop it on the desktop.
- 24:26Go from there.
- 24:30So, it doesn't take long to export. And
- 24:32we'll just check it's there. Drawing.
- 24:34Export. There we go.
- 24:38I've given you an overview of how quick
- 24:40the drawing and documentation process is
- 24:42in Brayon, but my favorite aspect is the
- 24:45ability to share. You can invite your
- 24:47teammates into the model to collaborate
- 24:49in real time. You can use the share
- 24:51button to grant access, add canvas
- 24:55comments or annotations to guide
- 24:57viewers, or even ask for feedback. It's
- 25:00a really great feature for working with
- 25:02clients, contractors, or other team
- 25:04members. So to share, there's a big blue
- 25:07share button up in the top right hand
- 25:09corner and we can literally just add our
- 25:13colleagues and connections using their
- 25:15email. If they don't already have a
- 25:16login, it will prompt them to sign up.
- 25:19Um, and similarly, we can publish these
- 25:22files for a presentation.
- 25:28When you're granted access to a drawing,
- 25:30you can go to the comment section, which
- 25:32is over on the left hand side, and you
- 25:34can add a comment. So, we can click
- 25:37somewhere on the canvas. So, say I was
- 25:40reviewing this drawing and I wasn't
- 25:41quite sure about that corner junction.
- 25:45Not sure about this corner junction.
- 25:51Do we need a structural support? Yeah.
- 25:56Question mark.
- 25:58post
- 26:00and then obviously when I go into that
- 26:02drawing um I'm alerted to that and we
- 26:04can have a conversation and collaborate
- 26:05on the design.
- 26:07Imagine how much that speeds up the
- 26:09process having a realtime commenting
- 26:11process on your drawings. So that's how
- 26:14you can create a comprehensive drawing
- 26:16set incredibly quickly using Rayon
- 26:18Design. If you've got any questions,
- 26:19drop them in the comments and we'd be
- 26:21happy to help. You can try it out for
- 26:23yourself using the free template linked
- 26:24in the description. If this tutorial was
- 26:27helpful, please like the video and
