- 0:13in this video we're going to have a look
- 0:16at how to do a crowd start generally
- 0:19these are used by youngsters when they
- 0:20start in athletics but can be used by
- 0:22athletes of all ages initially we need
- 0:25to work out which way round we're going
- 0:27to have our feet generally the foot that
- 0:31we like to kick a ball with will be our
- 0:33back foot and the other one our stance
- 0:36foot will be the front foot put the
- 0:40front foot just behind the line and
- 0:42measure back one and a half foot lengths
- 0:45once we have the front foot one and a
- 0:48half foot lengths back from the starting
- 0:49line we then keep it where it is we
- 0:52kneel down so that the other knee is
- 0:54side-by-side with the front foot with a
- 0:56small gap in between curl the back toe
- 0:58under on the back foot so that we get as
- 1:01many of our spikes into the track as
- 1:03possible place our hands just over
- 1:05shoulder width apart on the floor just
- 1:08behind the starting line resting on our
- 1:10fingers
- 1:11this creates a good starting position so
- 1:13that when we go into the set on the
- 1:15order of the starter all we have to do
- 1:17is keep our arms upright and raise up
- 1:19until we get a right angle at the front
- 1:22knee the placement of the back foot in a
- 1:25crowd start is slightly further forward
- 1:27than in a block start this is because we
- 1:30need to make sure that we have the
- 1:32appropriate angles for the surface we're
- 1:34pushing against with a block start
- 1:36clearly being on an incline with the
- 1:39foot slightly further forward ie with
- 1:41the toes and knee lined up we get the
- 1:45optimal angle to push against the floor
- 1:48in order to start quickly here we have a
- 1:52few demonstrations of athletes running
- 1:54from blocks they are only included to
- 1:57demonstrate some of the technical points
- 1:59we actually want to use when we're doing
- 2:01a crowd start as well
- 2:03it is worth noting that in the on your
- 2:07marks and set position we want to make
- 2:09sure that our head stays down and
- 2:12relaxed on our shoulders and that our
- 2:16back is straight this allows for maximum
- 2:19force to have be applied into the ground
- 2:21the big arch in our back or sticking our
- 2:24head up to see where we were going will
- 2:26create tensions and weakness that will
- 2:28not help us to start as fast as we
- 2:30possibly can
- 2:31when the starter fires his gun we drive
- 2:34the arms hard and push against the floor
- 2:37with our legs the idea in the first few
- 2:39strides is to push hard whilst gradually
- 2:42bringing our body upright on each step
- 2:45we are looking for our foot to land
- 2:47behind our hips so that we are always
- 2:50pushing against something to drive our
- 2:52body forwards after about three to four
- 2:55strides we should be in a full running
- 2:57action even if we are still leaning
- 2:59forwards a bit we will look at the
- 3:02mechanics of what we do in the first few
- 3:05steps in future videos thanks for
