How to Develop Your Drawing Style Aesthetic | Lesson 10 — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00welcome to lesson 10 now that we have
- 0:01our drawings drawn in some details with
- 0:04blocks hatches and annotations I'm now
- 0:07going to show you how you can style your
- 0:08drawings to make them much more
- 0:10captivating engaging and also add a
- 0:13narrative a storyline to your projects
- 0:15by changing color texture and hatch
- 0:17Styles line weights and layers you can
- 0:19really start bringing your drawings to
- 0:21life and turning a black and white
- 0:22drawing into something that is really
- 0:24powerful and captivating stylizing your
- 0:26drawings will make them much more
- 0:28memorable and also consist when putting
- 0:30them together in a document this is
- 0:32where I believe that rayon becomes
- 0:34really powerful with its graphic
- 0:36capabilities being able to edit your
- 0:38drawings and stylize them to communicate
- 0:40them in the way that you want to
- 0:41communicate them so in this lesson I
- 0:43will demonstrate how you can turn this
- 0:45black and white drawing into three
- 0:47different style
- 0:50drawings so for the purposes of this
- 0:52lesson I've put together a composite
- 0:54drawing of the ground floor plan and
- 0:56East Elevation now the reason why I've
- 0:58done this is because it will make it
- 0:59easier when I'm talking through how to
- 1:01style your drawing to coordinate between
- 1:03the two views and to show you how you
- 1:06can implement the Styles in both
- 1:08elevation and floor plan and a composite
- 1:10drawing is really powerful in my opinion
- 1:12I think they're a really great way of
- 1:14showing the different levels of
- 1:16information that relate to one another
- 1:17on one page uh so we've combined them in
- 1:21this instance now the way I've combined
- 1:23this is fairly straightforward all you
- 1:24have to do is head over to your model
- 1:27highlight the components that you want
- 1:29to copy across right click click copy as
- 1:33export this is really important when
- 1:35you're copying across models come back
- 1:37over to your model right click and then
- 1:39do paste and that's how you copy items
- 1:43across now defining and building a
- 1:45graphic style that is represented
- 1:47throughout your drawings is really
- 1:48important graphic Styles really help to
- 1:51encapsulate the viewer to be able to
- 1:53visually enhance your drawings and also
- 1:56to provide some consistency throughout
- 1:58your drawings so for example examp we
- 2:00have a floor plan we have a section we
- 2:01have an elevation we have sight plans if
- 2:04there is a consistency in the graphic
- 2:05style throughout you can clearly see
- 2:07that there is a narrative there is a
- 2:10coordination between them and you can
- 2:12associate those drawings together which
- 2:13is really important when you're trying
- 2:15to sell your ideas now as I briefly
- 2:18touched upon in the previous lesson when
- 2:20we were discussing annotations I have a
- 2:22really strong graphic style in my
- 2:24drawings as an architectural designer
- 2:26and a feature of my drawings is that I
- 2:27really like strong contrasting drawings
- 2:30as you can see here on my Pinterest page
- 2:32is absolutely covered in black and white
- 2:35drawings with a punch of color so like I
- 2:38mentioned in the previous lesson I love
- 2:39to use a bit of red and as you can see
- 2:41here it just makes your drawings Pop I
- 2:44like high contrasting drawings with lots
- 2:47of detail lots of layering lots of
- 2:50annotations and as you can see the
- 2:52implementation of a graphic style in the
- 2:54drawings really help Define and
- 2:57communicate A Narrative of the project
- 2:59and communicate the story that is behind
- 3:01the drawings and the three graphic
- 3:03styles that I will show in this lesson
- 3:04will demonstrate how you can tell
- 3:06drastically different stories just
- 3:09through the use of color and line
- 3:11weights and we're going to demonstrate
- 3:13that by showing you all of the rayon
- 3:14styling tools to be able to bring your
- 3:17drawings to life so the first style that
- 3:19I'm going to create from this black and
- 3:22white base is going to be a blue style
- 3:25now over this right hand side here I've
- 3:26already defined a kind of color palette
- 3:29and now defining a color palette is
- 3:31really important when creating any set
- 3:33of drawings because it helps you define
- 3:36a level of consistency through out there
- 3:38is a level of coordination and of course
- 3:41by showing these kind of three shades of
- 3:43blue uh there is a style and there is a
- 3:46kind of layering and a hierarchy to the
- 3:48drawing that can be implemented so these
- 3:50are the three colors that I'm going to
- 3:51work with with this blue style and
- 3:54there's going to be a hierarchy and a
- 3:56layering that we're going to play with
- 3:58so although I've touched on many of
- 3:59these components already in this course
- 4:01I'm going to quickly do a reminder so
- 4:03there are four different types of styles
- 4:05there's a a text style an annotation
- 4:08style a shape style and a wall style so
- 4:11for example if we start with a wall
- 4:13style when you select your wall or when
- 4:16you start drawing a wall you will all
- 4:19instantly have a kind of
- 4:21default style activated on that wall and
- 4:25you can change of course the wall
- 4:26thickness you can change the wall fill
- 4:29and you have the option of choosing a
- 4:31solid fill which could be black for
- 4:33example and you can change the opacity
- 4:36you can also use the Color Picker which
- 4:38is really handy for example once you
- 4:40defined a color scheme you can select
- 4:44the color for example and then you can
- 4:46have the option of saving that style so
- 4:49we could call that blue wall you have
- 4:53the option of choosing a texture using
- 4:55the default library or heading over to
- 4:58the left and using rayon
- 5:00texture
- 5:02Library which you can choose from many
- 5:04different textures which you can
- 5:07transform by scaling up and down you can
- 5:10change the rotation and then finally you
- 5:13can use a hatch which you can also
- 5:15select you can change the opacity change
- 5:17the stroke once again scale it up and
- 5:20down rotate it offset it additionally
- 5:21with annotations once again you can
- 5:24change the color text Arrow Head Etc as
- 5:27demonstrated in the previous lesson like
- 5:29Rees with text you can change the font
- 5:33font size and finally with shapes you
- 5:37can once again change the fill hatch in
- 5:39addition to saving a style to an element
- 5:41you can also detach a style from an
- 5:43element so for example when we select
- 5:45this wall here you can come to the right
- 5:47hand side and click detach where you can
- 5:49then make this wall its own style and a
- 5:52really useful tool to point out also is
- 5:54if you select an element and you click
- 5:57pick style you can also select the item
- 6:01and it will match its style and if you
- 6:02head over to the left hand side and
- 6:04select the Styles tab you can see that I
- 6:07have all of the shape Styles wall Styles
- 6:09text Styles and annotation Styles saved
- 6:12in the left hand side and these save
- 6:14Styles become really useful when you
- 6:15want to change multiple items that have
- 6:18that style assigned to it for example if
- 6:20we change this wall style we can click
- 6:23three dots select edit we could change
- 6:26that wall now to red and all of those
- 6:28walls that have that style assigned to
- 6:32will also change now I hope that gives
- 6:33you a good summary of styles in rayon
- 6:36and now we're going to start
- 6:37implementing this blue style so the
- 6:40first thing that I'm going to do is I'm
- 6:41going to head over to the left hand side
- 6:42I'm going to create a new layer and I'm
- 6:45just going to give it a
- 6:47background and I'm going to ensure that
- 6:49that is going to be dropped to the back
- 6:51of the drawing and I'm going to draw a
- 6:52background using this light color here
- 6:55and we're going to simply draw a
- 6:57rectangle which is going to our backdrop
- 7:00for the drawing and then now this gives
- 7:03us a nice backdrop which we can then
- 7:05right click and lock into place so that
- 7:08layer is now locked so we can now start
- 7:11working into these walls and assigning
- 7:14these colors now the walls are going to
- 7:15be this heavy blue color to give that
- 7:18hierarchy we want the walls to have that
- 7:21structure and to indicate that weight
- 7:24and thickness in the drawings and so I'm
- 7:26going to come over to the left hand side
- 7:28we're going to select the wall going to
- 7:30change that
- 7:31to this dark blue color and we're also
- 7:36going to change the stroke to the same
- 7:39color to too so we've got a nice
- 7:42consistent wall wrapping round and this
- 7:45item here if we want to assign that
- 7:49style to this item you come over you
- 7:51click the quadrant button and we' select
- 7:54the
- 7:55dark blue item and we're going to do the
- 7:58same with the internal walls we're going
- 8:00to also make those the same color now
- 8:02currently the furniture is quite
- 8:04prominent in the drawings with their
- 8:05white background so I'm going to select
- 8:08the block and I'm going to change the
- 8:10Style by just
- 8:12removing the fill which just makes them
- 8:15a little bit more subtle in the drawing
- 8:16and aren't so prominent and then a
- 8:18really good little hack for you guys to
- 8:21be able to select multiple items that
- 8:24don't have a style currently assigned to
- 8:26them you can right click on an item you
- 8:28can select similar so you can I do same
- 8:30style layer type block we're going to do
- 8:32same type so we're going to select all
- 8:34the annotations then you can come over
- 8:36to the right hand side you can change
- 8:38that style now to that same blue and all
- 8:41of those items of that type will then
- 8:44change and then we're also going to save
- 8:45that style to Dimensions so then on the
- 8:48left hand side here in the annotations
- 8:51style tool bar it will appear and we're
- 8:54also going to edit that style just to
- 8:56make it a bit more subtle so we're going
- 8:59to drop the the opacity down to 50% now
- 9:01this is going to be a process of
- 9:03changing all of the styles to the same
- 9:05blue and I'm just going to do this as we
- 9:09go along here to change all of the
- 9:11Styles and then the same with all of the
- 9:14text annotations so selecting all of the
- 9:16text changing all of those to blue and
- 9:18then Shifting the attention slightly to
- 9:20the elevation you can do the same with
- 9:22the hatches these are currently a little
- 9:24bit too heavy so we're going to change
- 9:26those hatches to the same blue once
- 9:28again and we're going to drop the
- 9:29opacity down to 50% just to make them a
- 9:31bit
- 9:32softer uh and then you can also save
- 9:35that style so we're going to save that
- 9:37as Stone hatch and then we can select
- 9:40multiple items and then change that by
- 9:44clicking the quadrant button and the
- 9:46same in the background here we've added
- 9:48some trees which we've imported we're
- 9:50going to change those to Blue so
- 9:51everything is going to be the same blue
- 9:53color and as you can see here this is
- 9:55where the layering and the opacity works
- 9:57really well where you have two item
- 9:59items that overlapping one another you
- 10:01get that nice layered look in the
- 10:02drawing it gives the drawing a bit depth
- 10:05and then a really useful tool to um make
- 10:08note of is that you can also change the
- 10:11tiling of your hatch so if you head down
- 10:14to the right hand corner here you can
- 10:15change the rotation you can change the
- 10:17offset but you can also click into the
- 10:20hatch and change the hatch so that it is
- 10:24independent to any style so even if you
- 10:27have a style assigned to it you can
- 10:28rotate that you can move it and it won't
- 10:31change the rout now with a bit of work
- 10:33you'll arrive at something like this
- 10:34where you can see pretty much everything
- 10:35has been assigned with the blue we now
- 10:37have a bit of a hierarchy with some of
- 10:40the items dropping a little bit further
- 10:41in the background with the opacity and
- 10:43we now have quite a soft drawing using
- 10:47um these kind of pastel Blues it's a
- 10:49little bit softer than the harsh black
- 10:51and white with the red tone but I think
- 10:53it's a really nice subtle touch the
- 10:54colors work really well and it has that
- 10:57nice and soft feel to the drawing so
- 10:59this is style number one now the next
- 11:01style is going to be this rendered SL
- 11:03textured style so this is a really
- 11:05useful way of showing a realistic
- 11:08representation of your drawings uh
- 11:11adding actual textures to indicate floor
- 11:14finishes to indicate a realistic
- 11:17environment in uh a carpet for example
- 11:21uh the tiling throughout the kitchen
- 11:23living and dining space we've got some
- 11:25concrete floor for the garage the patio
- 11:27area and then when we go into the
- 11:29elevation you can see that we've applied
- 11:31a color to the stone we've got green
- 11:34trees and this isn't as of a a kind of
- 11:38aesthetic drawing but more
- 11:41representative of the real life scenario
- 11:43and you can do this by once again
- 11:45selecting the item changing these styles
- 11:48to whatever texture you feel is
- 11:51appropriate for the space that you are
- 11:53applying it to uh for example we could
- 11:56even go into textures on this right hand
- 11:59side and we could change this to a kind
- 12:02of stove Stone Paving for example uh
- 12:05which would be extremely realistic and
- 12:08you can then change the position of this
- 12:11tiling by activating the tiling at the
- 12:15bottom right corner you can then scale
- 12:19this texture up and down once again as
- 12:22previously shown so we've got some
- 12:23really kind of big pieces of stone but
- 12:26in principle this is another example of
- 12:28how you can begin to use rounds hatches
- 12:30and textures to indicate a realistic
- 12:33environment and in this drawing we've
- 12:35also added some Shadow which is simply
- 12:37drawn by using the polyline drawing
- 12:40around the items as indicated in the
- 12:42interior model uh interior lesson and
- 12:46then we can change a 10% Shadow just to
- 12:49make the drawings have a bit of depth
- 12:52and the final style is this inverted
- 12:54style which is my personal favorite once
- 12:56again going through the process of
- 12:58changing the stles in the left hand side
- 13:01making everything white with a blue
- 13:03background locked in the background and
- 13:06the drawings pop it gives it that kind
- 13:10of blueprint drawing effect um it gives
- 13:13it the drawings a quality a line quality
- 13:16that I think is really powerful and
- 13:18makes them pop it's quite intriguing and
- 13:20you want to read more into the drawings
- 13:22and it shows a level of detail that
- 13:24might not necessarily be shown on a
- 13:26realistic style for example and like
- 13:29requires in elevation you get a really
- 13:31nice strong graphic for example with
- 13:33these Reflections in the windows the
- 13:35hatches really begin to pop you get a
- 13:37nice layered look in the background with
- 13:40the white annotations and I just think
- 13:42an inverted drawing just looks really
- 13:45powerful and it's my personal favorite I
- 13:47tend to do inverted drawings a lot and
- 13:50it's a really great way of just adding a
- 13:52level of detail to your drawings without
- 13:54really doing much just by simply
- 13:56changing it with a black background or a
- 13:58dark blue in this instance it makes your
- 14:01drawings really pop and have that level
- 14:03of detail and Intrigue and those are the
- 14:06three graphic styles that I wanted to
- 14:07indicate in this lesson as you can see
- 14:10there is a vast range of options with
- 14:13hatches with textures with fill colors
- 14:16uh and the capabilities of rayon with
- 14:18their styling tools is really powerful
- 14:20to start implementing your own graphic
- 14:22style and building a narrative around
- 14:24your drawings
