  2. 0:02What's the secret to designing a logo that leaves a lasting impression?
  3. 0:06Well, it's all about mastering the fundamentals of graphic design.
  4. 0:09Hello, my name is Daniel White, also known as Dansky, and I'm a designer
  5. 0:13and instructor with Envato.
  6. 0:14In this course, we're going to dive into the logo design process using a recent
  7. 0:19logo that are created for a fictional coffee brand, Luke's Iced Coffee.
  8. 0:24First of all, let's talk about the importance of a logo design in branding.
  9. 0:28A well-designed logo is pretty essential for branding as it serves as the visual
  10. 0:33cornerstone of a brand's identity, and if done correctly,
  11. 0:36it can create a memorable first impression, communicate the brand's values
  12. 0:40and personality, and help distinguish the brand from its competitors.
  13. 0:44It builds trust and can significantly influence consumer perception
  14. 0:48and loyalty.
  15. 0:49In summary, a logo is a powerful tool that encapsulates the essence of a brand,
  16. 0:54making it instantly recognizable and relatable to its audience.
  17. 0:59Now, let's do a quick overview of the logo design process.
  18. 1:02This typically begins with understanding the brand's identity, their values,
  19. 1:06and who their target audience is, often through a detailed design brief.
  20. 1:10This is then followed by brainstorming and sketching some initial
  21. 1:13concepts, exploring various ideas and visual directions.
  22. 1:18You can then refine your best ideas and digitize them using graphic design
  23. 1:22software like Adobe Illustrator.
  24. 1:24During this phase, you can experiment with color schemes, typography,
  25. 1:28different styles and shapes to create a cohesive and appealing design.
  26. 1:33Now, if you've seen me work before, my logos will often undergo
  27. 1:36many, many iterations just to get the design just right.
  28. 1:41And of course, you'll need to factor in any feedback
  29. 1:43from your team or client too.
  30. 1:45And finally, after working through any revisions, the final logo
  31. 1:49can be presented to your team or client, and it's a good idea
  32. 1:52we're presenting to showcase the design mocked up in a few real-world scenarios.
  33. 1:57For example, this could be on the header of a website or some signage
  34. 2:01or some printed material, something that's actually going to be used.

  38. 2:16So this particular logo was mostly designed live across multiple days,
  39. 2:20streaming on YouTube, together with a bit of work from home, a bit
  40. 2:23of work from London Airport, and during my recent flight to Louisiana.
  41. 2:27So I was working on this all over the place.
  42. 2:29And being a fictional brief, this one was relatively open, and we came up with
  43. 2:33the brand name, Luke's Iced Coffee, and it was always intended to be fun,
  44. 2:37like a pop-up style van business sellingiced cold drinks in the summer.
  45. 2:42And the identity needed to embody a refreshing an energetic esthetic,
  46. 2:46with ideally some calming colors that evoke the chill and invigorating
  47. 2:49experience of drinking Iced coffee.
  48. 2:52And in terms of the brand's values, it's all about the quality of the coffee
  49. 2:55and the customer experience.
  50. 2:57So professional and reliable, they're not too serious or corporate,
  51. 3:01so including some more fun and playful elements is a must.
  52. 3:04And the target audience is young professionals, college students, and busy
  53. 3:08individuals aged around 18 to 35 who are looking for a convenient and delicious
  54. 3:12way to stay energized throughout the day.
  55. 3:15The brief here was very loose being just a fictional project and for fun.
  56. 3:19But if you have a real brief you're working to, it's always
  57. 3:21a good idea to refer back to it as your design progresses, just to check
  58. 3:26that what you're creating is fulfilling the requirements set out in brief.
  59. 3:30Now, in terms of software, this logo was created almost exclusively within Adobe
  60. 3:35Illustrator using a variety of different tools and techniques that I'll be
  61. 3:39demonstrating a bit later in the course.
  62. 3:41Personally, I don't sketch out anything on paper like ever.
  63. 3:44I'm more of a digital guy, and I predominantly design with a mouse or
  64. 3:48trackpad, unless it's something that has a lot of lines and a lot of curves,
  65. 3:51or perhaps some more organic shapes, in which case I will definitely be using
  66. 3:55a pen tablet or pen display because it just makes life a lot easier.
  67. 3:59So brainstorming brainstorming really is the beginning of the creative process
  68. 4:02for me, whether that's mind mapping ideas or having a bubble with ideas coming off
  69. 4:07it or just sketching out things very crudely in the software,
  70. 4:10I can pull together some initial ideas that will hopefully branch out into new
  71. 4:14ideas that will be a bit more exciting down the line.
  72. 4:16Now, let's cover a bit of design theory.
  73. 4:19And design theory is essential in logo design as it ensures logos
  74. 4:22are visually appealing, effective, and convey the intended message.
  75. 4:27Balance ensures that the logo feels stable and harmonious.
  76. 4:30Symmetric balance provides a sense of formality and order,
  77. 4:34whereas asymmetrical balance can create a dynamic and interesting design.
  78. 4:38Proportion maintains the relationship between different elements, ensuring that
  79. 4:42no part of the logo overwhelms another.
  80. 4:45Proper proportion contributes to a cohesive
  81. 4:48and esthetically pleasing design.
  82. 4:50Emphasis highlights the most important elements of the logo, guiding the
  83. 4:54viewer's attention to the focal point, and this helps in conveying the brand's
  84. 4:58message clearly clearly and effectively.
  85. 5:01Rhythm can create a sense of movement and flow within a logo,
  86. 5:04leading the viewer's eye across the design in a deliberate way.
  87. 5:08Rhythm can also add a dynamic quality and ensures that the logo is engaging.
  88. 5:12Contrast differentiates elements through variations in color,
  89. 5:16size, shape, or type, making the logo visually interesting
  90. 5:19and ensuring that it stands out.
  91. 5:21Throughout the design process of the Luke's Iced Coffee logo, I meticulously
  92. 5:25refined every element to ensure that everything was perfectly balanced,
  93. 5:29particularly with the logo mark.
  94. 5:31I started by exploring different layouts and arrangements,
  95. 5:34and as you could see, some ideas are wildly different to others.
  96. 5:38And by adjusting things like the size and placement of the text
  97. 5:41and the logo mark, I was able to achieve a cohesive look that maintains
  98. 5:45visual interest and readability.
  99. 5:47Emphasis was created through a strategic combination of fills and strokes to make
  100. 5:52some areas appear bolder, which I think helped the logo to stand out, especially
  101. 5:56when compared to some of the earlier designs that were more linear in style.
  102. 6:00Contrast was another key consideration, so I experimented with various colors
  103. 6:04and tones to ensure that the logo would stand out.
  104. 6:07And by balancing the light and dark elements, I was able
  105. 6:10to achieve a color combination that ensures the different parts
  106. 6:14of the logo stand out from each other.
  107. 6:16Actually, these 4-5 colors also form a lovely color palette, too,
  108. 6:20that, as you'll see later, can be used for other brand assets,
  109. 6:23whether it's for the website, packaging, or a repeatable pattern.
  110. 6:27Now, let's talk about typography.
  111. 6:30Typography plays a crucial role in logo design as it can convey the brand's
  112. 6:33personality and values through the style and arrangement of text.
  113. 6:37The choice of font can evoke specific emotions and associations.
  114. 6:41For example, seraphonds often suggest tradition and reliability,
  115. 6:45whereas sanseraphonds convey modernity and simplicity.
  116. 6:49Good typography is easy to read and is memorable, making the brand name
  117. 6:53easily recognizable and distinctive.
  118. 6:56The spacing, alignment, and the integration of text
  119. 6:59with other elements are also vital in creating a balanced and cohesive logo.
  120. 7:04So essentially, good typography not only communicates the brand's message,
  121. 7:07but it also enhances the overall esthetic and the effectiveness of the logo.
  122. 7:12Here you can see an example of another logo I designed For this one,
  123. 7:16both the logo mark and the logo type have similar slightly rounded edges.
  124. 7:20This is so both elements of the logo fit together nicely, and this approach
  125. 7:24also aligns with the brand's values.
  126. 7:27Now, if we switch this out for some alternative type spaces,
  127. 7:30you can see this drastically changes not just how the logo looks,
  128. 7:34but the feelings that it can evoke.
  129. 7:36I typically get my favorite fonts from Envato.
  130. 7:38Just look at these.
  131. 7:39They have so many good fonts to choose from, and you get everything all within
  132. 7:43one subscription, and they come with a commercial license, too, which is great.
  133. 7:47Okay, so that's typography.
  134. 7:49Now, let's talk about color.
  135. 7:50Color theory is vital in logo design because colors evoke emotions.
  136. 7:55They convey messages, and they influence perception subconsciously.
  137. 7:59The right Color choices can significantly enhance a logo's impact, making
  138. 8:03it more memorable and recognizable, and different colors and combinations
  139. 8:07can communicate various brand attributes.
  140. 8:10For instance, blue often signifies trust and professionalism, whereas red
  141. 8:15can evoke energy and passion.
  142. 8:17An understanding color theory helps designers select colors
  143. 8:20that align with the brand's identity and appeal to the target audience.
  144. 8:25Additionally, color contrast and harmony are crucial for ensuring the logo's
  145. 8:29readability diversity and visual appeal across different mediums and backgrounds.
  146. 8:34In short, color theory helps create a powerful visual identity that resonates
  147. 8:39with viewers on an emotional level.
  148. 8:41For this logo, I never really left the beige, creamy, caramel-style
  149. 8:46colors, but I always wanted an accent color, something completely different,
  150. 8:50to give the brand a more unique flavor and to help it stand out.
  151. 8:54Now we're going to jump into Adobe Illustrator, and I'm going
  152. 8:56to show you the tools and techniques that we use to create this specific logo.
  153. 8:59So you can see I've created a new document in the Illustrator, and this is going
  154. 9:04to be interesting because I've not worked on this logo for quite a while now.
  155. 9:07And typically, as part of the logo design process, a design can evolve
  156. 9:10with small iterations bit by bit.
  157. 9:12But now I'm looking at the completed logo design with all these different shapes,
  158. 9:16lines, and curves, and I'm thinking, how am I going to create this?
  159. 9:19So now we're going to get stuck into some tools and techniques
  160. 9:21that are perfect for logo design.
  161. 9:23And I think you'll actually appreciate where things don't go to plan because
  162. 9:26these are common problems that I come up with, and I'm sure you do as well.
  163. 9:29And I'm going to show you how to get around them.
  164. 9:31So first of all, I'm going to zoom in and I'm going to start by grabbing
  165. 9:34the rectangle tool and we're going to draw the base of the cup.
  166. 9:38Now, let's make sure the fill is set to none and we're going
  167. 9:41to thicken up that stroke weight.
  168. 9:45Now, with the direct selection tool, I'm going to select just
  169. 9:48the top two anchor points and then press S for the scale tool, and we
  170. 9:52can now scale just those two points out.
  171. 9:54We've got the bottom tapered in slightly.
  172. 9:56Now, I'm going to grab the ellipses tool and we're going to click and drag
  173. 10:01and create an ellips or an oval.
  174. 10:03Now, if you've got your smart guides turned on, you can move this around
  175. 10:06and you'll see it marks the center very nicely.
  176. 10:08If we copy this shape and paste in place, we can then drag this copy down slightly.
  177. 10:12I'm also going to stretch it out to the side.
  178. 10:15Remember, you can hold Alt or option to scale from the left
  179. 10:17and right sides at the same time.
  180. 10:19Now, let's click and hold shift to make a circle.
  181. 10:21We're also going to move this into position, making sure everything
  182. 10:24is centrally aligned.
  183. 10:26If you're not sure, select everything and click this icon here just
  184. 10:29to double check.
  185. 10:29Because a big part of this design will be symmetrical, and this attention
  186. 10:32to detail is going to increase the quality of the final result.
  187. 10:36Now, we've got a lot of lines going on, so with the direct selection tool,
  188. 10:39I'm going to remove that bottom point on the circle, and this will just
  189. 10:41make everything a lot easier on the eyes.
  190. 10:44Let's move this down into position, and I might actually
  191. 10:47remove this top line here as well.
  192. 10:49So any of these lines that you're not going to be using as part
  193. 10:52of your design, I would definitely remove them to make things visually
  194. 10:54a bit easier to work with.
  195. 10:56Let's maybe scale these down a bit.
  196. 10:58Another really useful tip to switch into outline mode with Command
  197. 11:01or Control Y, and you get a styler wireframe of your design.
  198. 11:05As you'll see later in the course, this can be very useful
  199. 11:07for troubleshooting problems.
  200. 11:09Something else I like to do is copy certain shapes and then
  201. 11:12move them out to the right or left with the arrow keys, just in case
  202. 11:15I make changes to the design and then I actually need that original shape.
  203. 11:19When I say make changes, I mean this, selecting everything,
  204. 11:22grabbing the Shapebuilder tool, and then holding Alt or option and clicking
  205. 11:25on those endpoints to trim them off.
  206. 11:27You can click and drag through different shapes to combine them together.
  207. 11:30But we'll get back to that a bit later.
  208. 11:32For now, let's just scale this down and line everything up.
  209. 11:36There we go.
  210. 11:37Something else I like to do, if you've ever seen me work live,
  211. 11:40is I like to drag over everything and make copies all over the place,
  212. 11:44just Just in case something goes wrong, I've got that version to fall back on.
  213. 11:48Let's trim those away with the Shapebuilder tool.
  214. 11:50That's a pretty good start.
  215. 11:52Very quickly and easily, we've got the main shape of the cup.
  216. 11:54Now for the bottom, I'm going to delete this with the direct selection tool.
  217. 11:58I want this to curve slightly to follow the contour tools of the top part.
  218. 12:01You can use the curvature tool, but it doesn't mark the center point, which is a
  219. 12:04bit annoying, so you get a smooth curve, but you're not sure if it's perfectly
  220. 12:07symmetrical, so that's a no-go for me.
  221. 12:09Instead, I'm going to grab the pen tool.
  222. 12:11You can see this one marks that center point, and I can click and drag.
  223. 12:15Now, it can go all over the place.
  224. 12:16If you hold down shift, it's going to snap nicely.
  225. 12:19As I mentioned, there's going to be a lot of symmetry in this part of the design.
  226. 12:22What we can do is we're just going to fine tune the left half of the cup.
  227. 12:25Let's just make that perfectly smooth on that corner.
  228. 12:28Now, I can actually delete the the entire right side of that line,
  229. 12:31and I can select this here and then click O on the keyboard for the Reflect
  230. 12:35tool, hold Alter option and click, and then copy that vertically.
  231. 12:39Now I have perfect symmetry on both sides.
  232. 12:41To join these together, I just need to drag over these two anchor
  233. 12:44points, go to Object, down to Path, and select Join, and it will now
  234. 12:48join these into a single shape.
  235. 12:50At least I know that this part of the design is perfectly symmetrical.
  236. 12:54Now, I need to separate this ellips into two halves, so I'm going
  237. 12:57to copy it, paste it in place, and move one copy I'm going
  238. 13:00to delete the bottom half of this one.
  239. 13:02Then on the other copy, I'm going to probably maybe move this down.
  240. 13:06I'm then going to delete the top half of this one.
  241. 13:09This is why I move things around with the arrow keys because I
  242. 13:11can now just put them back in place, and I know they're going back in the
  243. 13:14exact same position they were in before.
  244. 13:16Now, again, I'm going to select everything and use the shape of the tool
  245. 13:19together with Alt or option and click to remove these points.
  246. 13:23We now have a dome shape, and I have this other half over here
  247. 13:26that I can pop back in position.
  248. 13:28I'm just going to adjust the stroke weight a bit.
  249. 13:31We'll make this one a bit thinner and the outer one a bit thicker.
  250. 13:36We'll make this bottom one match the top one.
  251. 13:39We now need to make space for the straw at the top.
  252. 13:41Let's just make a rectangle.
  253. 13:43We'll sample white as the color pop it in the center, and then again,
  254. 13:47we're going to use the scale tool to scale that on the left and right edges.
  255. 13:50Now, I'm going to grab the pen tool and I'm going to just
  256. 13:52complete this bottom shape.
  257. 13:54It doesn't need to be perfect here, but I do need to be able to swap the fill
  258. 13:57in the stroke with shift X just I can give this a solid black fill.
  259. 14:02Of course, it's messed up the contours of the ellipses now, so I need to
  260. 14:05select the ellipses and with the Eyedropper tool, just hold, shift,
  261. 14:08and click to set the fill color to white.
  262. 14:10Now, I think I'm actually going to move this part out again,
  263. 14:13so let's put that over there.
  264. 14:15I'm going to delete this part and bring this back in.
  265. 14:18You can see why I kept this part earlier, just in case
  266. 14:21I needed it, and there we go.
  267. 14:22Now I'm going to grab the width tool, and what I can do is use
  268. 14:25this tool to make certain parts of a stroke thicker or thinner, or I can
  269. 14:29double-click and enter a specific value.
  270. 14:31That bottom part is going to be thicker.
  271. 14:33This part at the top is going to be a little bit thinner.
  272. 14:36With this circle selected, what I'm going to do is I'm going
  273. 14:39to go to Object at the top, down to Path, and choose Offset Path.
  274. 14:44I'm going to enter a negative value, and this will create a copy
  275. 14:47of this ellips, but on the inside.
  276. 14:49Now, it's got those same modifications to the width, so I can change the width
  277. 14:53profile and set that back there.
  278. 14:55I'm going to delete that top point.
  279. 14:56Now, I can use the width tool again.
  280. 14:58However, instead of doing it on a full ellips, I'm now
  281. 15:01doing it just on this one line.
  282. 15:03What we'll do is we'll start with the middle, we'll set the width there,
  283. 15:07and then I can go to either end and taper those in.
  284. 15:15There we go.
  285. 15:16We'll try and scale that up a little bit without messing everything
  286. 15:19up we've just done.
  287. 15:22Let's bring that down.
  288. 15:23If you want to use the width tool to adjust one side of a stroke instead
  289. 15:26of both, you can hold Alt or Option and drag when using this tool.
  290. 15:30Let's just spend a second finetuning everything we've done so far.
  291. 15:46Right, now let's play around with negative space, and I'm going to draw a little bit
  292. 15:50of a curved cut into this part of the cup, and I'm going to use this
  293. 15:54to try and add a bit more depth and reinforce the shape of the cup.
  294. 15:58I've created this shape, and I'm going to set the fill color to white,
  295. 16:03and we need to match that curve to make it blend smoothly with the other lines.
  296. 16:07I'd recommend zooming in super close to get maximum precision.
  297. 16:10It's not perfect right now, but we can always come back to that.
  298. 16:13Right, now let's create another rectangle for the straw,
  299. 16:16and we'll thicken up that stroke.
  300. 16:17We probably do need this extending down into the drink, Dan.
  301. 16:20There we go.
  302. 16:21Another reason I like to move certain elements
  303. 16:24out with the arrow keys on the keyboard is because if they're a bit more complex,
  304. 16:27I can work on them independently.
  305. 16:29Then once they're done, I'll put them back into the design.
  306. 16:31What I'm going to do here is create an ellipses the same width
  307. 16:34as the rectangle, delete the top part, and we'll bring that down.
  308. 16:38Then to create the pattern on the straw, what I'm going
  309. 16:40to do is grab the Arc tool, click and hold shift to create an arc.
  310. 16:45I'm just going to drag this with Alt or option and shift to duplicate it,
  311. 16:49and then press Command or Control D to repeat that same action.
  312. 16:53There we go.
  313. 16:54We pretty much have the straw.
  314. 16:55What I'm going to do now is, while I'm moving it back in manually, I should
  315. 16:58have used the arrow keys, but I didn't.
  316. 16:59This does highlight a problem.
  317. 17:01It's not central at the minute because something is throwing
  318. 17:04off the alignment, and it turns out it's actually these arcs.
  319. 17:07They extend outside of the rectangle, and so I need to select them
  320. 17:11all and just scale them in so they line up with the edge.
  321. 17:16There we go. Perfect.
  322. 17:17Now, if I zoom back out, I should be able to align this all centrally.
  323. 17:23There we go. Lovely.
  324. 17:25Now, for the ice cubes, we're going to grab the Polygon tool, click anywhere,
  325. 17:28and type six as the number of sides, rotate it 90 degrees, and with the Pen
  326. 17:32tool, click in the center, and we can then click out each of those corners.
  327. 17:37We now have a 3D cube or what will become an ice cube.
  328. 17:40With all of those lines selected, I'm going to press Command and Control X
  329. 17:44to cut them, just round off the corners of that shape and then
  330. 17:48paste those lines back in place.
  331. 17:50Now I have that same 3D shape, but with slightly rounded corners.
  332. 17:53If I create a few copies of this, I can resize them.
  333. 17:57We'll start with this one in the middle here.
  334. 17:58Pop that there because that one is going to be perfectly upright.
  335. 18:03Let's make that a bit smaller.
  336. 18:04Then I'm going to duplicate this, make this one a little bit bigger,
  337. 18:07and rotate it slightly to the left.
  338. 18:09I think the lid and the straw might need to move up slightly.
  339. 18:12Then I'm going to drag with Alt, or option to duplicate it again
  340. 18:15and rotate it the other way.
  341. 18:17Now, I need to extend this curve a bit, and I can do that with the pen
  342. 18:20tool, so something like this.
  343. 18:22Let's zoom in and fine-tune that so it all lines up smoothly.
  344. 18:25Rather than try and do that pen tooling again in exactly the same way
  345. 18:28the other side, I'm just going to delete that entire right side.
  346. 18:32Again, press over the Reflect tool, hold Alter option and click,
  347. 18:35and then reflect it vertically.
  348. 18:37I'm feeling confident, so let's get rid of that backup
  349. 18:39and then copy this, paste in place, and then move this out to the left.
  350. 18:43I'm going to use the Shape Builder tool to remove that top part, and everything
  351. 18:47that's left, go to Object and expand a couple of times.
  352. 18:49What I need to do here is use the Shape Builder tool to remove the black part
  353. 18:53of the bottom and just leave me a copy of that ellipse in the middle.
  354. 18:57There we go.
  355. 18:58Now I can go to the color picker and we'll pick a color.
  356. 19:01Let's go for red, something nice and contrasting.
  357. 19:04Let's create another copy of this, move it up slightly.
  358. 19:07With them both selected, press Shift X to swap the fill and the stroke.
  359. 19:10I'm going to scale this top ellips slightly, and you'll see
  360. 19:13what I'm doing in a minute.
  361. 19:14If I select them both and use the shape board or tool, I can knock out that
  362. 19:18top part and then nudge this back in.
  363. 19:20I've created a really shallow crescent moon shape that fits nicely
  364. 19:24along that bottom edge of the lid.
  365. 19:26Just like we did before, we're going to use negative space to create shapes
  366. 19:29reinforce the shape of the cup.
  367. 19:32In this example, it's just going to make everything look a bit more round.
  368. 19:35Right, now let's spend a minute just fine-tuning everything we've done.
  369. 19:48Now, again, we're going to use the Shape Builder tool, hold down Alter option
  370. 19:51and click to trim those endpoints.
  371. 19:53There we go.
  372. 19:55Actually, that didn't really work.
  373. 19:57What I'm going to do is grab the Pen tool instead and use the same technique
  374. 20:00that we did on the bottom of the cup to create a nice smooth curve.
  375. 20:04Again, let's just go and fine-tune that so it is a perfectly smooth curve.
  376. 20:08You probably know what's coming next.
  377. 20:10Now we've got the left side done.
  378. 20:11We're going to delete the right side.
  379. 20:13Just make sure that you look for any stray anchor points like that lurking around.
  380. 20:17And again, we're going to use the Reflect tool to reflect a copy
  381. 20:19of this shape vertically.
  382. 20:21And if we zoom in here, there's a gap.
  383. 20:22Let's select both points with the Direct Selection tool
  384. 20:26and then go to Path and Average.
  385. 20:28And this will pull the two points into each other, and then you can
  386. 20:31join them together like we did before.
  387. 20:32Right, so you can see we're getting there.
  388. 20:34There probably is a smoother way to do all of this, but that is a big part
  389. 20:37of using Illustrator is problem solving, trying out different tools and techniques
  390. 20:41and combinations, and seeing which one gives you the best result.
  391. 20:45I think we're definitely getting there.
  392. 20:47Let's move this bit back up, first of all.
  393. 20:50There we go.
  394. 20:51I think I'll squash this bit down and maybe move it up.
  395. 20:57Now, I think we'll create a copy of this one and we'll I'm going
  396. 20:59to move this out to the left again, just in case anything goes wrong.
  397. 21:03I think I'm at the point now where I'm going to start expanding shapes,
  398. 21:06hence the backup copy on the left.
  399. 21:08Let's select everything and expand everything.
  400. 21:11Do it a couple of times just until you can't expand anymore.
  401. 21:14All the strokes are now filled, and we could try and unite this together, but
  402. 21:17as you can see, it doesn't really work.
  403. 21:19We need to use the Shape Builder tool to remove any white
  404. 21:22or transparent areas first.
  405. 21:24Now what we can do is just select the black and then unite that together.
  406. 21:28That should combine all these pieces into a single shape.
  407. 21:32There we go.
  408. 21:33If I zoom in a bit, you can see these corners aren't quite round, so I can
  409. 21:36use the Direct Selection tool and click on that corner widget to round them off.
  410. 21:40There we go. A bit of a lifesaver, that feature.
  411. 21:42If you click and hold on the Shaper tool on the left, you'll find the smooth tool
  412. 21:45hiding under there, and you can click and draw along paths to smooth them out.
  413. 21:49Right, I've just grabbed another copy of this ellips, and I'm pasting it
  414. 21:53in place, and I'm going to change the color to something different.
  415. 21:56I wasn't really liking that shape before that was representing the rim the cup,
  416. 22:00so I'm going to try and do this a different way and use this ellips
  417. 22:03and maybe just adjust it a little bit so it still follows the contours, but I can
  418. 22:07just get the shape and position right.
  419. 22:10Let's delete this top half. We don't need that.
  420. 22:12We just need the bottom half.
  421. 22:14I think that's straight, but I'm not sure. I'm going to check.
  422. 22:20Let's just draw a horizontal line. Yeah, that looks good.
  423. 22:23Okay, must be just me.
  424. 22:25Now what I'm going to do is set the stroke color to white.
  425. 22:27We'll thicken this up a bit, and then I'm going to use the width tool again
  426. 22:31to adjust the width at various points, tapering in that left and right side.
  427. 22:47There we go.
  428. 22:48Just a bit more fine-tuning.
  429. 22:51Yeah, I think that's definitely better than the previous one.
  430. 22:53Like I said earlier, it's just sometimes using different techniques to see
  431. 22:57which one gives you the best result.
  432. 22:58You can see I've I've deleted that other little corner cut as well,
  433. 23:02so I'm going to recreate this and do a much better job.
  434. 23:05Sometimes doing it in outline mode where you can just
  435. 23:07see the path, that wireframe, is sometimes a little bit easier.
  436. 23:21Yeah, I think that looks a bit better.
  437. 23:23Maybe just a bit of fine-tuning and definitely a bit of smoothing out.
  438. 23:28In fact, I'm going to take a second just to get this right
  439. 23:30or it's going to bug me.
  440. 23:39Right, now let's come back to the straw.
  441. 23:40I'm going to select everything, expand those strokes into fills.
  442. 23:44I can unite them all together.
  443. 23:49Then what I'm going to do is grab the Life Paint Bucket tool, click
  444. 23:53on the object to make it a Life Paint group, and I can now start adding colors.
  445. 23:57Let's just add some gray in for now, just so we can see.
  446. 24:00And in fact, actually, I think recreating this will be easier if I actually
  447. 24:06add the colors that I'm going to use.
  448. 24:07So let's just create a bunch of circles, and I'm going to enter the Hex code
  449. 24:11for the specific colors I'm using.
  450. 24:13So this first one is 58CAE8.
  451. 24:23And the next one along
  452. 24:26is F9C 166, 7C3 200.
  453. 24:36And then the last one, AF5 315. There we go.
  454. 24:42We have a lovely color palette.
  455. 24:43So now I can select the Live Paint Group again.
  456. 24:46And then with the Live Paint Bucket, I can click to add this color here, and then
  457. 24:51use the Eyedropper tool to sample a different color, and then switch back
  458. 24:55to the Live Paint Bucket and just click to add that different color.
  459. 24:58So I for the Eyedropper tool and K for the Live Paint Bucket tool, just so you
  460. 25:03can switch back and forth between them.
  461. 25:04Now, let's make the rest of the cut that same darker brown
  462. 25:07color, and I'm going to expand that live paint group on the straw just
  463. 25:11so I can continue to work on it manually.
  464. 25:13Now, let's bring the ice cubes back in.
  465. 25:15Yeah, I think that's looking pretty good, actually.
  466. 25:18What I'm going to do now is just maybe shrink that down and then
  467. 25:21move the ice cubes and the straw.
  468. 25:22I'm going to make a copy and move it up.
  469. 25:25I think it'll be easier to work on this separately because otherwise,
  470. 25:28it's just going to be too complicated with all these lines going everywhere.
  471. 25:31Let's expand these ice cube shapes, and with each ice cube in turn,
  472. 25:35let's unite them so all of those separate shapes are combined into a single shape.
  473. 25:40There we go.
  474. 25:41We can now use the eye dropper tool to sample that same color as the straw.
  475. 25:45I think I might just make a few minor adjustments there.
  476. 25:48We'll bring the straw down so it goes a little bit more into the drink.
  477. 25:52Maybe push the ice cubes out to the side of it.
  478. 25:55Again, we can select this and use the shape builder tool
  479. 25:57to combine certain areas together.
  480. 25:59We'll hold down Alter Option and click to subtract certain segments as well.
  481. 26:03Now you can see the straw is clearly in front of the ice cube behind.
  482. 26:07Now I've done that and not messed it up, I'm going to confidently
  483. 26:10delete the other one down below, and then we'll just use the arrow keys
  484. 26:13to nudge this one back in Position.
  485. 26:19There we go. I think that's the right spot.
  486. 26:20Now let's zoom in, select everything.
  487. 26:23Again, I'm going to use the shape boarder tool to make sure that the ice cubes
  488. 26:27are visible and that back part of the cup does not run through them.
  489. 26:31You can see I've zoomed in nice and close, and I'm just taking care
  490. 26:35to actually remove the right parts.
  491. 26:37But of course, if you make a mistake, you can, of course, go to Edit,
  492. 26:40Undo and just have another go.
  493. 26:43Fantastic. There you go.
  494. 26:44You can see it's all starting to come together.
  495. 26:47Now, I want the ice cubes to look like they're sitting in the ice coffee, so I'm
  496. 26:51going to use the pen tool to draw half of a curved shape, make that color white,
  497. 26:56and then reflect it vertically just so it cuts off those two ice cubes.
  498. 27:00I'm also going to add a solid brown shape to the left side of each ice cube.
  499. 27:05This is just going to act as a shadow.
  500. 27:07The top and right side of each ice cube is lit up with a light source, and then
  501. 27:12the left side would be in shadow.
  502. 27:13It's just going to help enforce that depth a bit more.
  503. 27:17All of this could still work as a single color design if needed, which is great.
  504. 27:21Now I'm going to create a coffee bean symbol with
  505. 27:23an ellips and a horizontal line.
  506. 27:25Let's remove that fill and just make sure everything's centered.
  507. 27:28Very good.
  508. 27:29Then with the line selected, we're going to add a zigzag.
  509. 27:32Now, first of all, we need to set this to smooth and change the ridges
  510. 27:36per segment to, I think, maybe about two.
  511. 27:39Adjust the size and then you get that squiggle.
  512. 27:42It's better doing it this way rather than drawing this line manually because we get
  513. 27:45that balance and that symmetry, which gives us a better end result.
  514. 27:50Now we can expand that stroke. Let's do it a couple of times.
  515. 27:53Then we can use the Shape Builder tool to knock out the black line
  516. 27:57from the brown ellips.
  517. 28:00Perfect.
  518. 28:01If we group both halves together, we now have a coffee bean that we can rotate
  519. 28:05and we can move onto the cup.
  520. 28:08Let's just flip it around the other way just to match the final design.
  521. 28:11Yeah, you can see a little bit of back and forth, but
  522. 28:14we are definitely getting there.
  523. 28:15However, I've just noticed that the main body of the cup doesn't look symmetrical.
  524. 28:19Unfortunately, something has gone wrong somewhere, and this is just one
  525. 28:22of those things that's happened.
  526. 28:24I'm going to move a copy of this out onto the right-hand side and try and fix it.
  527. 28:28I'm going to start by deleting everything that I don't need to worry about.
  528. 28:32It's just really the cup.
  529. 28:33Let's go and expand everything a few times just so we don't
  530. 28:36have any strokes there and we know that we're working with fills.
  531. 28:39There we go.
  532. 28:40With the shape builder tool, I can knock out that middle bit so it's transparent.
  533. 28:43For that rim highlight shape, I'm actually going to click on it
  534. 28:46to make it into its own shape.
  535. 28:48This does change the color sometimes, so let's just set that back to white.
  536. 28:52Now I'm going to take the left half, which I think is perfect.
  537. 28:55That's fine.
  538. 28:56I'm going to cover the right half with the shape and select minus front
  539. 29:00from the Pathfinder panel.
  540. 29:01That didn't seem to work.
  541. 29:02If you get an error, just use the Shapebuilder tool instead.
  542. 29:05Of course, remove any leftover anchor points.
  543. 29:08Now we have that perfect half.
  544. 29:09We can use the Reflect tool again to create a copy, and you could
  545. 29:13combine these together or group them.
  546. 29:14We don't want this cut out on both sides, so I'm going to remove it from the right
  547. 29:18side, so it's only on the left.
  548. 29:20Okay, symmetrical balance thing solved.
  549. 29:22Now I'm going to create a copy of the other design and just remove everything
  550. 29:26except the straw and the ice cubes and then drag this back into the center.
  551. 29:31Nice.
  552. 29:32Now, I do need to bring that gap either side of the straw back in.
  553. 29:36So let's just move all of this up to the front and make sure
  554. 29:39everything's centered.
  555. 29:40And lastly, we just need to grab the coffee bean
  556. 29:42and bring that in front as well.
  557. 29:44Again, we're going to center everything.
  558. 29:45And I'm just going to move the ice cubes in the straw a bit lower
  559. 29:48and then just adjust that white shape so it's not extending onto the brown.
  560. 29:53Yeah, that's a bit better.
  561. 29:55Again, time for another checkpoint.
  562. 29:56Let's put a copy over there.
  563. 29:58And now I'm going to select everything and once again use the Shape Builder tool
  564. 30:01to first knock out all of the parts that I want to be transparent.
  565. 30:05When I say transparent, I mean have no color and whatever background
  566. 30:10is behind the logo will show through.
  567. 30:12Let's go and do the same for all of these shapes here.
  568. 30:15When you have something a bit more complex like this with lots of lines and shapes,
  569. 30:19I would definitely recommend zooming in lots when you're using the Shape Builder
  570. 30:22tool, just so you don't miss anything.
  571. 30:24Right, now let's use the Life Paint Bucket tool to add some color here.
  572. 30:28We're going to grab that lovely caramel color over here.
  573. 30:32We're going to click to add this in a few places.
  574. 30:34We'll add it there for theiced coffee, but also theiced coffee
  575. 30:37is flashing all over the ice cube, so we're going to add it there as well.
  576. 30:41Now, if we zoom in, you will see some problems.
  577. 30:44We get some of these weird oddities sometimes.
  578. 30:47Again, going into outline mode is a great way to identify and isolate these
  579. 30:50problems so that you can delete them.
  580. 30:52Again, here I've got this weird thin border thing.
  581. 30:56What I'm going to do is I'm just going to actually use the pen tool to I've got
  582. 31:00some brown shapes around the outside.
  583. 31:02It's not the cleanest implementation, but it won't matter in the end because
  584. 31:06now I can just use the shape builder tool to combine all of these shapes together.
  585. 31:10In fact, I'm actually going to combine a lot of the brown area together,
  586. 31:14so the straw and the ice cubes.
  587. 31:16Let's just merge all of these shapes.
  588. 31:18It's all looking a bit complex at the moment, which
  589. 31:20can cause a lot of problems.
  590. 31:22Let's simplify it by combining as many parts together as we can.
  591. 31:25I'm going to take a second now just to combine a few more pieces as well.
  592. 31:34Now, when you get lots of these small
  593. 31:41pieces, these lines, these can be
  594. 31:42quite annoying to shape build at all because you have to be really Precise.
  595. 31:45Sometimes when using this tool, it can also remove the color
  596. 31:48from your shape, which is a bit weird.
  597. 31:50Just select it again and reapply the color.
  598. 31:52Sometimes rather than using the shape build a tool for these tiny pieces,
  599. 31:56I would use the Direct Selection tool to just select them and delete them.
  600. 31:59It's It's just quicker and a heck of a lot easier.
  601. 32:02I think we're nearly done.
  602. 32:03Let's just move all of this over there and let's pop the final one in the center.
  603. 32:08I think it's time we actually got some words in there.
  604. 32:10Let's move that off to the left.
  605. 32:12With the Type tool, I'm going to type the word Looks.
  606. 32:18Then from the Properties panel on the right, I'm going to select the font.
  607. 32:22It's New Rubric.
  608. 32:24If I just scroll down, I think it's a much bolder one.
  609. 32:27Extra bold.
  610. 32:28There we go.
  611. 32:30Oh, no, that's the rounded version.
  612. 32:31A bit too rounded for my liking.
  613. 32:34I'm looking for New Rubric Edge. There we go.
  614. 32:36A slight variation that rounds off the corners ever so slightly, which can
  615. 32:41make the logo a little bit more playful, which goes back to the brand values.
  616. 32:45Right, now let's start adding the other words.
  617. 32:47We've got luke's, and then we neediced and coffee in there as well.
  618. 32:51You can see I've got that blue accent color that I'm going
  619. 32:54to use for the word luke's.
  620. 32:56Then these bottom two words are going to be the brown.
  621. 33:00Now I'm going to select all of the text, and I'm just
  622. 33:02going to reduce the tracking slightly.
  623. 33:04The tracking is the spacing between all of the letters as a collective.
  624. 33:07They're now just a little bit closer together, and I'm now going to increase
  625. 33:10the size of the text as well.
  626. 33:13Let's just scale that up.
  627. 33:14At this It's a bit of a point in the process, the logo mark just
  628. 33:16felt a little bit strange.
  629. 33:18Something I did was actually rotate this so that right edge
  630. 33:21of the cup lines up nicely with the left edge of Luke's Iced Coffee.
  631. 33:26Now, you can rotate this manually, but I prefer to use a specific numerical value
  632. 33:31because if I need to revert back to having the cup perfectly upright,
  633. 33:34I can just use a negative version of that value to put it back the way it was.
  634. 33:38Now let's give these two elements a bit of breathing space and then
  635. 33:41try and center Luke's Iced Coffee with the logo mark on the left.
  636. 33:45Now we're going to add a background color.
  637. 33:47Let's zoom out and send this to the back.
  638. 33:49From the color picker, I'm going to sample this nice caramelly Iced coffee
  639. 33:53color, and then we're going to go with a super light version, like a creamy beige.
  640. 33:58Yeah, something like that looks This logo design does work
  641. 34:02as a single color as well, which is great if a business wants to do
  642. 34:05a one color print in black, for example, which can be a lot more cost-effective.
  643. 34:10Right now, I'm just going to lighten that background ever so slightly.
  644. 34:14There we go.
  645. 34:15Of course, if you spend a bit more time refining everything,
  646. 34:18you can end up with something like this.
  647. 34:21Something else you absolutely must check out is Envato's platform that
  648. 34:24offers millions of creative assets that come complete with a commercial license.
  649. 34:28You can use these on your design projects and you don't have to worry
  650. 34:32about any of that legal stuff.
  651. 34:33So for this particular logo, I downloaded several different mockups to help me get
  652. 34:38a better feel of how this would actually look when used in different places.
  653. 34:42And locking things up in this way makes it a lot easier when trying to sell or pitch
  654. 34:47your designs to teams or clients. There we go.
  655. 34:50That wraps up the course.
  656. 34:51Hopefully, you've enjoyed our time together and can now
  657. 34:53take everything that you've learned and apply this on your next design project.
  658. 34:57Thank you once again to Envato for having me here.
  659. 35:00Care and I'll see you next time.
