  1. 0:00templates in obsidian are powerful and
  2. 0:03in this video I'll not only be showing
  3. 0:05you how to use the template system but
  4. 0:07also sharing some tips and tricks on how
  5. 0:10to make your use of templates as easy
  6. 0:13and efficient as possible the first
  7. 0:15thing you need to do to use templates is
  8. 0:17you need a folder for those templates to
  9. 0:19live in so we're going to create a
  10. 0:21templates folder I'm going to come over
  11. 0:24here and create a new folder and we're
  12. 0:27going to call this underscore templates
  13. 0:30now the reason why I put an underscore
  14. 0:32in the front of it is so that it will go
  15. 0:34up to the top of our list so that we can
  16. 0:37always find our templates folder the
  17. 0:39next thing you'll need to do is tell
  18. 0:41obsidian where to look for your
  19. 0:42templates which will be in this template
  20. 0:45folder that we just created so we're
  21. 0:46going to go down and open up the
  22. 0:48settings and in the core plugins we have
  23. 0:52the templates now we got to make sure
  24. 0:54that templates is turned on so if it's
  25. 0:57not on you'll need to go over to core
  26. 0:59plug plins and go down to
  27. 1:02templates and make sure that that is
  28. 1:04turned on and then you can go to the
  29. 1:06settings for the templates folder under
  30. 1:08a core plugins then we can go over here
  31. 1:10and we can say and it'll it gives us the
  32. 1:13options of what folders to choose from
  33. 1:15so we're going to use underscore
  34. 1:16templates we are now ready to create our
  35. 1:18first template so I'm going to go over
  36. 1:20here and I'm going to rightclick on the
  37. 1:21templates folder and I'm going to say
  38. 1:23new note and we're going to call this
  39. 1:26new
  40. 1:27note so anything that we we put inside
  41. 1:30of this template folder when we insert
  42. 1:32this template into another note it will
  43. 1:34include anything that we have in this
  44. 1:36note so for now we're just going to
  45. 1:38start off by adding in a header and it's
  46. 1:41going to say new
  47. 1:43note that's as simple as a template
  48. 1:46could be it can just be a header that
  49. 1:48you want to add in I'll show you how to
  50. 1:49create more interesting templates in a
  51. 1:51minute so let's say I want to use my
  52. 1:54template inside of another note so let's
  53. 1:57go ahead and go here and and let's
  54. 2:00create a new note templates are
  55. 2:04awesome now if I want to insert the
  56. 2:07template into this I have a couple of
  57. 2:09options I can go over to this insert
  58. 2:12template button and it gives me a list
  59. 2:15of all the templates that are inside of
  60. 2:17our templates folder right now we just
  61. 2:18have new notes I'm click that and now
  62. 2:20that header that we set up inside that
  63. 2:22template is in this note so let's go
  64. 2:24ahead and delete that and I'll show you
  65. 2:25another way you can open up the command
  66. 2:28pallet by either going over here here
  67. 2:30and opening up command pallet button or
  68. 2:32you can hit command p and this will
  69. 2:34bring up all the commands that are
  70. 2:35available inside of obsidian I'm going
  71. 2:37to say insert template hit enter and
  72. 2:42then hit enter again to insert the new
  73. 2:44note the easiest way though is to set a
  74. 2:48hotkey for inserting the template so
  75. 2:50we're going to go back to our settings
  76. 2:51we're going to go over to hot keys and
  77. 2:53then I'm going to search for insert
  78. 2:56template now I already have an insert
  79. 2:58template hotkey assigned if you don't go
  80. 3:01ahead and assign one I use command
  81. 3:04option T so let's go ahead and get out
  82. 3:06of settings and then I'm going to delete
  83. 3:08this again and then I'm going to hit
  84. 3:10command option T and that brings up the
  85. 3:12template menu and I can insert that new
  86. 3:15note template believe it or not that's
  87. 3:18all there is to creating templates so
  88. 3:20now I'm going to share with you a few of
  89. 3:21the ways that I'm building templates and
  90. 3:24using them to make my workflow much
  91. 3:26easier one of the types of notes that I
  92. 3:28use obsidian for a lot is booknotes I
  93. 3:31have a booknotes template that I use
  94. 3:32every time I start a new book I'll show
  95. 3:34you how that's put together I'm going to
  96. 3:36rightclick here and hit new note and
  97. 3:38we're going to call this booknotes and
  98. 3:41then I'm going to do the three dashes so
  99. 3:44I can get some properties the first
  100. 3:46property that I include is tags and then
  101. 3:48I use a nested tag to identify what kind
  102. 3:52of note this is so Source slash book
  103. 3:57slash to read the next property I
  104. 4:00include is the author and we just leave
  105. 4:03that empty because this is a template so
  106. 4:05I'll fill in the author when I create a
  107. 4:07new book and then I also like to keep
  108. 4:09track of when the book was published so
  109. 4:11I just get an idea of context as far as
  110. 4:14time of when the book was written some
  111. 4:16other possible properties that you could
  112. 4:18use for this is maybe you could have a
  113. 4:20date started so if you want to keep
  114. 4:22track of when you started reading the
  115. 4:24book and then along with that you can
  116. 4:26make a date finished and then we're
  117. 4:29going to make the these date by clicking
  118. 4:32on the little lines and getting a date
  119. 4:34in here and that's what I have for my
  120. 4:37booknotes so as you can see I use it for
  121. 4:39things that have properties that I want
  122. 4:41to be able to fill out about that book
  123. 4:44so let's create a new note and the book
  124. 4:46that I just finished reading it's called
  125. 4:48slow productivity so I'm going to go
  126. 4:50ahead and use my hotkey and I'm going to
  127. 4:52hit book notes then I'm going to go
  128. 4:55ahead and fill this out so it is Cal
  129. 4:57Newport was the author and this was was
  130. 5:00published this year 2024 I don't
  131. 5:03remember when I started it but we'll say
  132. 5:05I started it on the 1 and I finished it
  133. 5:09today and then I can write notes about
  134. 5:11the book this this book was awesome so
  135. 5:15if you find you're using the same
  136. 5:17properties over and over again create a
  137. 5:18template with those properties and then
  138. 5:20you can just insert them whenever you
  139. 5:22need them another template I use is for
  140. 5:24my YouTube videos so let's recreate that
  141. 5:26template here as well right click on
  142. 5:28templates new note we're going to say
  143. 5:30YouTube video and I've got some
  144. 5:33properties that I use here so we're
  145. 5:34going to do a Das D Dash and I use tags
  146. 5:38and I say YouTube SL Ida the other
  147. 5:42property I have is publish date and I'll
  148. 5:44make that a date property as well my
  149. 5:47publish date is for when I'm hoping to
  150. 5:50publish it I'll enter that in and then
  151. 5:53once it's actually published I'll go
  152. 5:54back in and change that date if it
  153. 5:56didn't get published on my expected date
  154. 5:58the other thing that I have have in my
  155. 6:00YouTube template is a call out with some
  156. 6:02tips things that I want to remember as I
  157. 6:05write my YouTube scripts I put these
  158. 6:07tips inside of what's called a call out
  159. 6:10and I Collapse that call out so I don't
  160. 6:12have to see it all the time but if I
  161. 6:14open up this call out click here you'll
  162. 6:17see I have some tips and things that I
  163. 6:19want to remember as I'm creating my
  164. 6:22YouTube videos so let's take a look at
  165. 6:24how to create this call out I'm going to
  166. 6:25click on this little code button here
  167. 6:28and this shows
  168. 6:30the source code for this call out you
  169. 6:32start off by doing a right facing arrow
  170. 6:36and then you do a bracket an exclamation
  171. 6:38mark and then the type of call out you
  172. 6:40close the bracket and then this minus
  173. 6:42symbol is what makes it so that it will
  174. 6:44be collapsed by default and then I add a
  175. 6:48title for the call out that's the part
  176. 6:50that shows when it's collapsed and then
  177. 6:52I just created a bullet list inside of
  178. 6:55the call out now this little carrot has
  179. 6:57to be in front of anything that you want
  180. 6:59to include in the call out all the way
  181. 7:01down to the bottom and then when you
  182. 7:02click out of it you can then see the
  183. 7:04call out so in order to use this
  184. 7:05template create a new note obsidian
  185. 7:08templates I hit my hotkey I go down to
  186. 7:11YouTube video hit enter and now I have
  187. 7:14it tagged with youtube/ idea that way I
  188. 7:17know it's in the first stage then I want
  189. 7:19to publish this by Friday so I'm going
  190. 7:20to click on Friday and then I can write
  191. 7:23my notes obsidian templates are
  192. 7:27awesome so let's say you like the look
  193. 7:29of these call outs but you can't
  194. 7:31remember the Syntax for how to create
  195. 7:34them well if you find you're using call
  196. 7:36outs often and you don't remember them
  197. 7:38create a template for it so let's go
  198. 7:40ahead and
  199. 7:42rightclick Note and we're going to say
  200. 7:46tip call out and then I'm going to do
  201. 7:49that right facing carrot and bracket
  202. 7:53exclamation tip and if I leave this
  203. 7:56blank if I don't give it a title it will
  204. 7:58give this
  205. 8:00tip part as the title so I hit enter a
  206. 8:02couple times now it just says tip so now
  207. 8:05when I want to create a tip inside of
  208. 8:08let's say let's go over to this
  209. 8:09booknotes again actually that's our
  210. 8:11template let's go over to our slow
  211. 8:14productivity and I want to insert a call
  212. 8:16out hit the
  213. 8:18hotkey tip call out now it's right there
  214. 8:21and go up and I can say maybe there's a
  215. 8:25quote or something that I want to
  216. 8:27include here now it's called quote I hit
  217. 8:29enter and I say here's my quote and now
  218. 8:33we have that tip call out now there's
  219. 8:35bunch of different kinds of call outs
  220. 8:36that you can create if you want to see
  221. 8:38what those are I'm going to include them
  222. 8:40in the markdown cheat sheet inside this
  223. 8:42obsidian for beginners Vault also go
  224. 8:44ahead and include the templates for each
  225. 8:46of these call outs in the obsidian for
  226. 8:48beginners Vault so that you can just
  227. 8:49insert them whenever you need them these
  228. 8:51are the main ways that I'm using
  229. 8:52templates and as you can see they're
  230. 8:54very powerful and they make things a lot
  231. 8:55easier especially when you are reusing
  232. 8:58the same types of things over and over
  233. 9:00again I'd love to hear how you're using
  234. 9:02templates inside of obsidian please
  235. 9:04share in the comments below if you
