How to Create Professional Interior Design Mood Boards FAST (5 Steps) — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Before your technical drawings, your
- 0:02specifications, your 3D models, or
- 0:05before any work gets done, the first
- 0:08step is to actually present your clients
- 0:11mood boards. Mood boards are like your
- 0:14north star. They align the clients, they
- 0:17align the contractors, the consultants,
- 0:20and yourself to the project. You have to
- 0:22know where you're going before you map
- 0:24out all of the nitty-gritty details. In
- 0:28this tutorial, I'm going to be walking
- 0:30you through the five steps to make
- 0:32designer ready mood boards. These mood
- 0:35boards are meant to entice your clients
- 0:38and once again align the project. So,
- 0:41keep on watching if you want to learn
- 0:43more. Hi everyone, my name is Daniela
- 0:47and I'm an interior designer based in
- 0:49Toronto. However, I take on interior
- 0:51design projects all around the world.
- 0:54So, I'm actually traveling right now.
- 0:56Anyhow, it's this video isn't about me.
- 0:59It's actually about mood boards and how
- 1:02you can create mood boards very, very
- 1:04easily and seamlessly. When you're
- 1:06creating mood boards, you want it to be
- 1:09easy. You're pasting different photos
- 1:12from everywhere. You want to create spec
- 1:14sheets. You want to create FF and E
- 1:16specification tables. And you want it to
- 1:19be all streamlined. You don't want to
- 1:21take hours on hours on ends to create
- 1:23all of these different sheets.
- 1:25So luckily there's a tool such as rayon
- 1:28design that can make everything very
- 1:31very easy and we're going to be getting
- 1:33into that today on how we can create
- 1:36these mood boards and how we can work
- 1:38efficiently as designers.
- 1:41So take a look at the description and
- 1:45download the template with the URL. And
- 1:48I want to make note that Rayon makes it
- 1:51very, very easy to present your mood
- 1:53boards with URL links, which I'll show
- 1:56you how to do in this video. So, enough
- 1:59talking. Let's get into the video.
- 2:06I have my drawing sets open, and I hope
- 2:09that you have it open on your end as
- 2:11well. This is a very typical drawing set
- 2:14that you can create in rayon. And I
- 2:16actually just want to go through the
- 2:18different layers of this drawing
- 2:20package. So we're going to click here on
- 2:23layers. And as you can see, we have a
- 2:25presentation canvas, we have floor plans
- 2:28and sections, we have millwork drawings,
- 2:32and we have kitchen drawing and mood
- 2:34board.
- 2:36This is going to be the focus of our
- 2:38video today.
- 2:39And like I said, we're going to be going
- 2:42through this five-step process, and
- 2:45we're actually going to be starting
- 2:47backwards to shake things up a little
- 2:49bit. Okay, so starting at step five.
- 2:52Step five is actually to find the mood
- 2:55and purpose. And I have Google open
- 2:58right now because I'm going to browse
- 3:00through some mood boards while I talk.
- 3:03So, the first type of mood board I
- 3:06recommend you show to your clients is
- 3:08actually a conceptual mood board. This
- 3:11means that you're starting off the
- 3:13project showing some textures, some
- 3:16colors, maybe some decorative pieces.
- 3:19You aren't showing specifically sourced
- 3:22items. You're really just trying to get
- 3:24the design intent.
- 3:27And secondly, once your client has given
- 3:30you the okay on that mood board, I would
- 3:33recommend that is when you create a
- 3:36project specific collage. So that is
- 3:39when you've done the design work, you've
- 3:41done the leg work and you have a
- 3:43specific chair that you want in this
- 3:45project, you have a specific fabric,
- 3:48etc. You're showing them actual things
- 3:51that you want them to buy. So, when
- 3:54we're looking through Google, we see
- 3:57that a lot of these mood boards are kind
- 4:00of cluttered, messy.
- 4:03I mean,
- 4:05you know, not trying to be too much of a
- 4:07critic. Some look okay, but overall, it
- 4:12seems as if most of these mood boards
- 4:16aren't hitting the mark in my books at
- 4:19least. So, let's jump on over to Rayon
- 4:22and I'll talk a little bit more about
- 4:23these two different mood board types.
- 4:26All right, so I'm back in Rayon and I
- 4:28want to show you the two different types
- 4:31of mood boards that I just spoke about.
- 4:34And my mood board here might look a
- 4:36little bit different than yours because
- 4:38I've actually went ahead and customized
- 4:40this mood board. So, this is the
- 4:43conceptual mood board. And as you can
- 4:46see, we have some inspiration photos.
- 4:50And I went ahead and added some playful
- 4:53pops of the material, of the colors, and
- 4:57in this template, we've actually added
- 4:59some elements so you can drag and drop
- 5:01and customize these mood boards if you'd
- 5:04like to practice. So, as you can see
- 5:07within this mood board, you get a sense
- 5:09of style and you get a sense of
- 5:11direction. So, let's move on to the
- 5:15second mood board and let's take a look
- 5:17at it. And already you can see with this
- 5:20project specific collage, there's a lot
- 5:24more detail to it. And once again, I've
- 5:27went ahead and I've customized mine a
- 5:30little bit further. So, you can see we
- 5:32have a specific stool. I even added a
- 5:36little paint color blob. I've even added
- 5:39an accent color. I'm suggesting we add
- 5:42in a little bit of navy. And I'm
- 5:45suggesting the way that we place it in
- 5:47the room, maybe through accents. I added
- 5:50a little bit of a plant here just to
- 5:53suggest that once again, that is the way
- 5:56that I will be decorating this space for
- 5:59the final touch. And as you can see, we
- 6:02have mixed metals in this space. We have
- 6:06our backsplash. We have suggestions for
- 6:09the different materials and you can go
- 6:12ahead and label everything if you'd like
- 6:15or you can leave your mood boards a
- 6:17little more clean and all of the labels
- 6:19and information would come on the spec
- 6:22sheet. So, you'll have to use your own
- 6:24discretion and you'll have to see how
- 6:27minimal or how busy you would like your
- 6:29mood boards. And that again might tie
- 6:32into your branding. It might tie into
- 6:35how many elements you are showing to
- 6:38your clients. So, there's customization
- 6:40to mood boards. And the point is is that
- 6:44you can create different types of mood
- 6:46boards using rayon design and you can
- 6:49customize it to your liking.
- 6:51So, let's talk about step four and let's
- 6:54take it a step back.
- 6:57And step four is collect and curate
- 6:59visuals with intention. So, when it
- 7:02comes to mood boards, you might think
- 7:04that you're just supposed to paste
- 7:06everything that you like and see, and
- 7:08that's not the case because it can cause
- 7:11a lot of confusion, and the last thing
- 7:13you want are confused clients.
- 7:18So, if we're looking back at these mood
- 7:20boards, you really want to be very
- 7:22intentional with the photos that you
- 7:24choose. I say keep it maximum to three
- 7:27inspiration photos. And when it comes to
- 7:31adding products, you want to make sure
- 7:34that you're linking the products as you
- 7:36go. Things can get lost later, and
- 7:39that's sort of a nightmare to try and
- 7:41find something that you sourced long
- 7:44ago. So, you want to be very
- 7:47intentional. And what you can do is you
- 7:50can place all your images and elements
- 7:53here like Rion has done for you. and you
- 7:57can play around and drag and drop,
- 7:59delete, switch up things. So, use this
- 8:03as your whiteboard. Another cool thing
- 8:06is that you can actually copy and paste
- 8:08images from Pinterest or Google. And I'm
- 8:11actually going to show you how you can
- 8:12do that right now. So, we're in my
- 8:16Pinterest. Hello, everyone. Yes, I am
- 8:20always on Pinterest.
- 8:22And let's search something and copy and
- 8:25paste.
- 8:30So, this looks nice to me. All we have
- 8:32to do is double click, press copy image,
- 8:35and I'm going to pop over back to Rayon
- 8:38and paste it.
- 8:40So, I'm back in Rayon, and let's replace
- 8:44this photo. So, I've selected this one.
- 8:47I'm going to delete it, and I'm going to
- 8:51press paste. And as you can see, my
- 8:54Pinterest photo has loaded.
- 8:59So, as you can see, I brought this new
- 9:01photo in, and I can make edits to it. I
- 9:04can obviously change the orientation,
- 9:06the size, and I can even edit it further
- 9:10in Rayon's AI editor. So, I could remove
- 9:14the background if I wanted to do that.
- 9:16So, this is very helpful for items. So
- 9:20when I brought in the L cru set, I
- 9:22removed the background so it's nice and
- 9:24clean. So as you just saw, it's very
- 9:27easy to import images. You can remove
- 9:30the background with their AI tool and
- 9:32you can create clean and concise mood
- 9:35boards all with one tool. So now we're
- 9:38moving on to step three, which is put
- 9:40your mood board in context and leverage
- 9:43it for FF and E. So, mood boards can
- 9:46feel a little disconnected at times, but
- 9:49to truly communicate how your design is
- 9:52going to come to life, you need to put
- 9:55your mood boards along architectural
- 9:57drawing sets in your presentation. And
- 10:00with Rayon, as you've seen, you can have
- 10:02all your drawings in one place.
- 10:05So, this means that you have your floor
- 10:07plans, your cabinetry details, your
- 10:10layouts, your furniture plans,
- 10:12everything all in one. So your clients
- 10:15can really see the mood board and they
- 10:17can see how it's going to translate into
- 10:20an actual design and not necessarily
- 10:22random inspiration photos.
- 10:25And here is a tip when it comes to
- 10:27interior design. Do not assume that
- 10:30everyone is on the same page. If I've
- 10:32learned anything in my career, it's that
- 10:36you can never assume. Even when you are
- 10:39clear as day, never assume. So you have
- 10:42to be extremely detailed and extremely
- 10:46clear. So how do you gain this clarity
- 10:49on a project? Well, I recommend to
- 10:52create roomspecific item mood boards for
- 10:55each space.
- 10:57And another thing that you can do is
- 10:59link top view furniture symbols in your
- 11:01plan to its real life image materials.
- 11:04As you can see here, adding these images
- 11:07now will also save you over time when
- 11:09you're building your FFN schedules and
- 11:11your spec sheets. And if you need more
- 11:14help with that, check out Rayon our
- 11:17tutorials. We have a lot of different
- 11:18tutorials for how to streamline this
- 11:21process and create your FFN schedules
- 11:24and spec sheet very easily and
- 11:26efficiently.
- 11:28Moving on to step two, which is make it
- 11:30collaborative. And one of my favorite
- 11:32things about Rayon is that it's web-
- 11:34based and it's so easy to collaborate
- 11:36with different members on your team,
- 11:38your clients, the consultants. Trust me,
- 11:41you don't want to work on a software
- 11:43that's not web- based and collaborative
- 11:46because it's going to be a nightmare to
- 11:48try and talk about every each little
- 11:51element. So, I'm going to show you how
- 11:54you can share this drawing package with
- 11:57different people and how you can
- 11:58actually add a comment.
- 12:01So, we're going to pop and click share.
- 12:06And I'm going to add someone from the
- 12:08Rayon team, which is Shira. You've
- 12:10probably seen her here on the YouTube
- 12:12channel. So, I have her there. And I can
- 12:15add her and I can invite. I can even
- 12:19change her role if I want her as an
- 12:22admin. If I just want her to view
- 12:24whatever, I would so please. And I'm
- 12:27going to add a comment here because like
- 12:30I said, your clients especially, they're
- 12:32going to probably be commenting on every
- 12:35single thing. So, let's go into the chat
- 12:38box here.
- 12:40And sometimes when I present things to
- 12:43my clients, I sort of like to brief them
- 12:46beforehand.
- 12:47So, meaning I know that certain elements
- 12:50might bring up a question. So, in this
- 12:53design, they might be like, "Oh, navy
- 12:56blue. I thought we were thinking green
- 12:58or yellow." So, maybe I want to write a
- 13:01comment for my client to read before,
- 13:05you know, they come back to me with a
- 13:07huff and a puff. Okay. So, I typed out,
- 13:10"Hey, Jim, I thought blue would work
- 13:12better as the accent. It's very rich and
- 13:15on trend.
- 13:17So, I posted that there and as you can
- 13:19see, this little chat bubble comes in
- 13:22and Jim could come and respond and
- 13:24hopefully he's happy with my, you know,
- 13:27new design intent.
- 13:29But anyhow, as you can see, it keeps
- 13:32everything clear, organized. You're able
- 13:34to share with your team, with other
- 13:36members, and you're able to keep
- 13:38communication where it's relevant and
- 13:40not have a million email threads and not
- 13:43have to resend drawings a million times.
- 13:47This is just a lifesaver. So, we've made
- 13:49it to step number one, which is actually
- 13:52to reuse and systematize.
- 13:55And I'm here on this open templates
- 13:58here.
- 14:00What I really want to tell you is that
- 14:02when you're creating all of these
- 14:03different presentations for your
- 14:05different clients, you need to have
- 14:07templates already set in place. You
- 14:09can't be starting from scratch each time
- 14:12and creating borders and figuring out
- 14:14your fonts. That's just going to be a
- 14:17total waste of time. You need to create
- 14:20your own set templates. Or you can make
- 14:23it easier and just use the free
- 14:24templates that Rayon has for you so that
- 14:27you can chop your design time in half.
- 14:31And you really need to go beyond mood
- 14:33board templates. You need a software
- 14:36that systematizes everything. So what
- 14:38this means is that there's available
- 14:40blocks. And Rayon has an amazing block
- 14:43library of over 10,000 blocks. You need
- 14:47a system that is able to stylize all of
- 14:51your drawings to your branding. And you
- 14:54need a clever software that's able to
- 14:57change different things in your drawing
- 14:59with a few clicks of a button. You can
- 15:01do all of that with Rayon as you've
- 15:03seen. So once you've created your own
- 15:07custom templates or maybe you've taken a
- 15:09Rayon template and you've customized it
- 15:11yourself, you can actually save it as a
- 15:14template. So, we're going to go back in
- 15:16this share button and we're going to go
- 15:18in templates.
- 15:20And as you can see, you can toggle this
- 15:22on and
- 15:25it's going to save as a template. You
- 15:28can even share this as a presentation
- 15:31and you can copy this and you can send
- 15:34it to your clientele if that's your
- 15:35preferred method of communication with
- 15:38them.
- 15:40So, as you've seen, everything that you
- 15:42need to make mood boards is in with one
- 15:45software. It's easy, it's fast, and
- 15:47that's what you need. You don't want to
- 15:49get frustrated in this process. It's
- 15:52supposed to be efficient, and it's
- 15:53supposed to be fun. And that's it for
- 15:56this video. You've just learned how to
- 15:58make professional mood boards that
- 16:00actually move the project forward.
- 16:03You're able to collaborate on these mood
- 16:05boards and you're able to make changes
- 16:07very very easily all within Rayon
- 16:10Design. So whether you're designing a
- 16:13cozy living room, an expansive kitchen,
- 16:17a full home, or who knows, even an
- 16:20exterior project, you can use Rayon
- 16:23Design to make a very impactful mood
- 16:26board. So take a look at the description
- 16:29and download Rayon Design. They have a
- 16:31free tier which you can try and they
- 16:34also have access to many many different
- 16:36templates which I know you'll find very
- 16:39helpful. And if you like this video,
- 16:42give it a like and leave us a comment
- 16:44down below. What would you like to see
- 16:46next? So, thanks for watching and I'll
- 16:49see you in the next one.
