How to Create Competition-Level Architectural Sections & Elevations — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Welcome to lesson four of the full
- 0:02course, how to win architectural
- 0:03competitions. In this lesson, we're
- 0:05going to focus on the proposal in
- 0:06section and elevation, focusing on how
- 0:08it sits within the site and responds to
- 0:10the slope. Inside Rayon, I'll walk you
- 0:12through the process of producing
- 0:14sections and elevations and how to
- 0:16populate them using the same blocks as
- 0:18the floor plan, which includes the
- 0:19alternative block views that are suited
- 0:21for different orthographic drawings.
- 0:23You're welcome to follow along with the
- 0:25class by creating a free rayon account
- 0:27using the link below or jumping into the
- 0:29template from the description.
- 0:34Okay. Yes. So now we're going to shift
- 0:36our focus from the floor plan now to the
- 0:38sections and elevations. We're first
- 0:40going to focus on the elevations which
- 0:42are going to focus on these two main
- 0:44elevations. We're going to call them the
- 0:46the north and east elevation, let's say.
- 0:49So the north being this top one here and
- 0:51the east one being this one. uh kind of
- 0:53looking at the building in parallel with
- 0:56the slope and we'll really start
- 0:57identifying and understanding how this
- 0:59is going to work into the landscape of
- 1:01the slope, how it's going to start
- 1:02actually having some kind of level
- 1:04changes and how it's going to step up or
- 1:06step down. So now to introduce how we
- 1:08can set up different types of drawings
- 1:10within the same workspace, uh you have
- 1:13these canvases at the top left corner
- 1:15here. So, what you want to do to create
- 1:17a new canvas, a new model canvas to
- 1:20start producing your drawings, you want
- 1:21to head up to the top here. You can then
- 1:23do paper or model canvas. We want to do
- 1:25model canvas. So, you would click model
- 1:27canvas here, which I've already set up
- 1:29here in this sections tab. If you select
- 1:32into there, you will then have um your
- 1:35kind of next set um of drawings that you
- 1:38can then start working into. And then
- 1:40when you're working in your paper
- 1:41canvas, you can then link in uh those
- 1:44drawings from those those model canvases
- 1:46in there. So it's all kind of working in
- 1:47one space in one workplace. So we
- 1:49currently have our section line set up
- 1:51at the moment to show the kind of
- 1:52topography and the level changes across
- 1:55the landscape. These will all start
- 1:56making more sense in a moment as I start
- 1:58bringing in views into the floor plan.
- 2:00So these two are going to be our two
- 2:02elevations. So this is the long
- 2:03elevation looking onto the slope and
- 2:06then this is the side looking into the
- 2:08the building as it integrates into the
- 2:10landscape. And then these are going to
- 2:12be our two sections. So the first thing
- 2:13that we're going to do which is going to
- 2:15be the best way for us to start drawing
- 2:17our elevations is going to be to create
- 2:20a view into our floor plan and then we
- 2:22can rotate and organize that floor plan.
- 2:24So then we can start drawing some lines
- 2:26and some guidelines in order for us to
- 2:28start structuring uh the elevation. So,
- 2:31what we're going to do is head over to
- 2:32the left hand side here where it says
- 2:33layers. We're going to click new. We're
- 2:34going to click view. And then you can
- 2:36choose which model canvas or paper
- 2:38canvas you want to put a view into. In
- 2:40this case, we want to do a plan.
- 2:43Now, what it's done here is it's created
- 2:44a view into that plan, which you can
- 2:47then scale up and scale down. What I'm
- 2:48going to do is I'm going to rotate it so
- 2:51that essentially this is going to be
- 2:53parallel with the landscape. And in
- 2:55fact, we're going to make that one one
- 2:58so that is the right scale. Uh you can
- 3:00then crop this down to the scale that we
- 3:04want. And then we want to make sure that
- 3:06this is directly parallel. So what we
- 3:09can do is head over to the bottom here
- 3:10where it says shapes. You can click
- 3:12guidelines which is also G. And you'll
- 3:14see that you'll get these guidelines in
- 3:16either vertical or horizontal. You could
- 3:19also do diagonal. Uh but for this case
- 3:21we're going to do a horizontal
- 3:22guideline. And this will basically just
- 3:24give us our kind of base point for
- 3:26rotating this view. Rotate that to the
- 3:29grid. And then now we know that that is
- 3:31parallel to the drawing.
- 3:33Now in the same way, we're then going to
- 3:36use the guidelines in the vertical way.
- 3:39And this is where you can start pulling
- 3:41down some of your geometry and start
- 3:43basically aligning some of those walls.
- 3:45So those lines will then essentially
- 3:47start dictating basically the structure
- 3:50of our elevation. So now we have these
- 3:52two views set up both parallel to the
- 3:55views that we want to create. Now the
- 3:56next thing we're going to do is create a
- 3:58new layer and I'm going to call it mass.
- 4:00So this is just basically going to help
- 4:01us define some of these block zones um
- 4:04where we have the level changes and
- 4:06where the form is going to start
- 4:07generating elevation. Uh the language
- 4:10that I want to create with this space is
- 4:12that I want this kind of long monolith
- 4:14monolithic element of these kind of
- 4:16workshop spaces with this kind of
- 4:18bookend element that might be slightly
- 4:20taller or slightly lower that kind of
- 4:21cuts off at an angle. But this main
- 4:24gallery center space maybe being a quite
- 4:26a significantly taller piece of um a
- 4:29kind of taller geometry which then
- 4:31breaks that monolithic nature and that
- 4:33it kind of steps up and steps down. So
- 4:35I'm just going to use very simply a
- 4:37rectangle here with a solid and make
- 4:40that stroke maybe 30. And then what
- 4:42we're going to start doing is almost
- 4:44just start structuring some of these
- 4:47geometries and get some of the heights
- 4:49right. So currently you can see here
- 4:51that as you push and pull this you will
- 4:52get certain heights. So if we change the
- 4:55width and height we'll change the height
- 4:57to maybe let's make it a 10 m tall
- 5:00building. Um and then basically what we
- 5:03want to do is then just start maybe
- 5:06copying some of these elements.
- 5:09Maybe that then does step down.
- 5:13We want to create this kind of long
- 5:15monolithic piece that really does embed
- 5:17into the landscape along here. Maybe
- 5:20we'll pull that to
- 5:23that piece there to line up the top
- 5:25there. Maybe that steps up a bit so the
- 5:29landscape kind of comes down in front.
- 5:31This is your main double height space.
- 5:33This is your entrance space with some
- 5:35kind of steps up.
- 5:37And then let's just pull this element
- 5:40across.
- 5:42So you've got maybe this steps back down
- 5:45again. And now if we wanted then to pull
- 5:47that across into this elevation, we're
- 5:50going to use the grid lines again. So
- 5:52we're going to head down to the grid
- 5:53lines. We're going to do horizontal
- 5:54ones. So then we can start identifying
- 5:57the heights across the other way like
- 6:02so. And then we can copy some of these
- 6:05geometries over.
- 6:08And with a bit of work, you'll arrive at
- 6:10something like this, which identifies
- 6:12some of the massing. So, we've got this
- 6:15element that's kind of stepping up quite
- 6:18clearly. Element stepping up this
- 6:20central piece. And then in this view,
- 6:22you can see that the kind of gallery
- 6:24definitely pokes out further, which is
- 6:26obviously being shown here. And then it
- 6:29steps back where you have these kind of
- 6:30stepping elements, the stepping
- 6:32geometries. You got the terrace, you got
- 6:33the cafe, then you got the theater.
- 6:34maybe as that steps up to the higher
- 6:37level um where you could potentially
- 6:40have people accessing this roof terrace
- 6:42at the top.
- 6:44So that's really kind of guiding our
- 6:46massing um and our heights. So we have
- 6:49quite tall spaces which is the the kind
- 6:52of type of spaces that I want to create
- 6:55for this. You want it to be quite grand.
- 6:56You want it to be quite uh an experience
- 6:59and atmosphere as you enter these spaces
- 7:00particularly in the gallery. And then
- 7:02what we're going to do now is start
- 7:03using some lines. So we're going to
- 7:05create a new line, call it lines, and
- 7:07start working into this with some detail
- 7:11um on some of the geometry and some of
- 7:13the actual form that we've kind of
- 7:16identified here in the floor plan.
- 7:19The first one going to be the steps. So
- 7:21I'm going to start drawing the steps. So
- 7:24if I then identify the corner of the
- 7:25steps, which is roughly about there.
- 7:30Let's then do a line
- 7:33and we're going to offset up this by
- 7:36let's say
- 7:390.2 mil and maybe actually comes down
- 7:42into the slope a bit. So let's just copy
- 7:44that down. So maybe something like this
- 7:46where we've got the main steps up and
- 7:49then we've got the smaller steps down at
- 7:51the back here and that needs to extend
- 7:54out and maybe in this case that could
- 7:56potentially slope down to a lower level.
- 7:59So, we've now got like this kind of
- 8:00point of entry and the the forms are
- 8:02starting to kind of come together. And
- 8:04then if we come over to the left hand
- 8:05side here and start adding some of the
- 8:07detail of these windows, the best way to
- 8:09do that, head to the left side, go up to
- 8:11your plan, grab that element, copy that
- 8:15across, paste it in place. Now, this is
- 8:18the real beauty of copying across
- 8:20blocks, doors, windows, openings,
- 8:24furniture, people, etc., is that you've
- 8:26got all of these alternative views that
- 8:28you can then switch between in your
- 8:29model. So, if we head over to the right
- 8:31hand side here and we change that to the
- 8:34front view, you will see that you'll
- 8:37have that element that you've drawn in
- 8:39plan that is now available in elevation,
- 8:42which is really handy. And then we can
- 8:46rotate that to make sure that it's
- 8:48parallel. And then we can bring that
- 8:50into place in this particular element.
- 8:52We can extend and add more windows. And
- 8:55you can also still double click into it
- 8:57and you can start making changes and
- 8:59edits to that block to something like
- 9:01this where we can then start adjusting
- 9:03some of this massing. And further down
- 9:05the line, what we can do is also
- 9:09start drawing in the contour line a
- 9:11little bit better so that the building
- 9:12is almost kind of embedding further into
- 9:14the landscape. But that is an element of
- 9:17uh showing you how you can then take
- 9:19those blocks and I'll show you in much
- 9:21more detail with the furniture and the
- 9:22people as well and how that works really
- 9:24well. Now I'm going to jump ahead
- 9:26slightly to show you the detail that I'm
- 9:28going to add to this elevation. I'm
- 9:29going to talk through the design
- 9:30language. So to jump ahead, this is what
- 9:32we've arrived at for the elevation. Um
- 9:35and you can see here now how this
- 9:36language is starting to work really well
- 9:38into the landscape. identified once
- 9:41again this kind of monolithic element
- 9:42that kind of extends out into the
- 9:44landscape when you've got this central
- 9:46piece that kind of breaks that rhythm
- 9:47slightly um with then these elements
- 9:50that are kind of stepping down into the
- 9:52landscape. Now one thing that I wanted
- 9:53to do also was integrate these kind of
- 9:56vertical fins. So there'll be fins that
- 9:59provide this kind of rhythm and language
- 10:01to the facade. kind of going back to
- 10:04some of those early mood board images
- 10:05that I found where the the louvers and
- 10:07fins work really well to provide that
- 10:09kind of breakdown on the facade. And
- 10:11although you've got this kind of long
- 10:13monolithic element of forms essentially
- 10:15that are continuing into the landscape,
- 10:18the fins provide a different level of
- 10:19rhythm and a different geometry to break
- 10:22up that language slightly. And then you
- 10:24can see here then we've got some kind of
- 10:25vertical windows poking into
- 10:28uh the gallery space. Once again,
- 10:31because of the gallery space being such
- 10:32a key space to control lighting and to
- 10:35make sure that we're not overproviding
- 10:37direct sunlight into and onto artwork,
- 10:40we want to make sure that we can manage
- 10:42that. So, we'll have roof lighting
- 10:43instead. And then you'll have these kind
- 10:45of open windows to create these kind of
- 10:48pockets of viewpoints both into the
- 10:50gallery, but also out the gallery across
- 10:52the landscape. And as I mentioned in the
- 10:54last lesson with the uh with the
- 10:56entrance space, this works really well I
- 10:58think with the kind of tall um vertical
- 11:01doors where it provides that kind of
- 11:03language into the space and that kind of
- 11:06that entrance point. So we've got this
- 11:08kind of stairway and the geometry that
- 11:10is leading into this uh entrance space
- 11:13with then a window at the top of that
- 11:14stair that's giving views into the
- 11:16gallery. So as you arrive at this point
- 11:19here, you can really see into the
- 11:20gallery and it provides that
- 11:21permeability and also that kind of
- 11:23welcoming feel of into the space and you
- 11:25can really see into the activity and
- 11:28what's going on in there. And then this
- 11:30lower bit here kind of ramps down
- 11:32slightly. Um so you've kind of got this
- 11:35stepped up um language and when we come
- 11:38into the section I'll show you these
- 11:39kind of two three levels. You've got
- 11:41this lower level here, you got this um
- 11:43ground level and then you have an upper
- 11:45level up here. But you can see here how
- 11:47this kind of steps down into the
- 11:48landscape at the bottom end here. And
- 11:50then this is your lift at the top here
- 11:52that is going to access this upper
- 11:54level. And then this is kind of like a
- 11:56ballastrade. It'll be like a glass
- 11:57ballastrade that will wrap around the
- 11:58top. So it's quite a subtle piece. And
- 12:01that will also mean that people can kind
- 12:02of stand up here from the landscape
- 12:04above. So if they're doing walks up this
- 12:06upper level here, they can almost stand
- 12:08on top of the roof here, which is
- 12:10accessed internally as well from uh this
- 12:13lift that goes up. And then on the side
- 12:15elevation, you can really then start to
- 12:17see how this geometry extends out and
- 12:20provides this real focal point for the
- 12:22design. Uh so where here it kind of sits
- 12:25quite nicely into the landscape. You can
- 12:27see here how it's kind of extending out
- 12:30um this element here that's curving and
- 12:33on the curve we have that vertical
- 12:34window. You then got those picture
- 12:36windows that I was talking about from
- 12:38the ground floor looking into the
- 12:40gallery. And then you've got these
- 12:42elements obviously that stepping up.
- 12:43You've got the terrace. You've got got
- 12:44this kind of feature type wall here
- 12:47that's kind of just bookending that
- 12:48geometry, providing a bit of privacy to
- 12:51the cafe at this angle. Um, and then
- 12:54you've got this vertical window looking
- 12:56into the cafe space here. And then once
- 12:59again this high level window uh that is
- 13:01looking into uh the cafe and um the
- 13:05space here into the kind of atrium and
- 13:08with the lift and then the access as you
- 13:10can see here from this upper level and
- 13:12when we go into styling the drawings
- 13:14I'll talk a bit more about materiality
- 13:16and how we're going to communicate that
- 13:17material materiality in lesson five and
- 13:20I'll show you how the kind of materials
- 13:22that we're talking about here and the
- 13:23materials that we're thinking of um and
- 13:25how that will really embed into the
- 13:27landscape and how that will kind come
- 13:28across.
- 13:32So, now we're going to jump into the
- 13:33sections. And so, as you can see here,
- 13:35I've [music] aligned them with this
- 13:37floor plan and this floor plan here. So,
- 13:39we've already kind of got them set up.
- 13:41And the beauty of having the elevations
- 13:42and sections in the same model space, in
- 13:45the same model canvas, is that you'll be
- 13:47able to draw lines across them to make
- 13:49sure that your heights um of the massing
- 13:52are all kind of similar and correct
- 13:53across. And in many instances, I'll
- 13:55probably copy down some of these
- 13:57elements components to make sure that
- 13:59we've got the kind of correct heights
- 14:01across the mass. And in this case, we're
- 14:04looking at a long and short section um
- 14:06along the two main axis of the building.
- 14:08So sections are particularly important
- 14:10here because they will clearly reveal
- 14:11the relationship between the internal
- 14:14spaces, external ground levels, and the
- 14:16surrounding landscape. And so you'll see
- 14:18here how now the level will change as
- 14:21you go up the building. What we're going
- 14:23to do here is going to head down to the
- 14:24bottom again. We're going to use the
- 14:25guidelines once again and start
- 14:29selecting these components and the
- 14:31points at which where we're cutting
- 14:33through for the section. So the section
- 14:36lines coming through here and we just
- 14:38want to make sure that we're selecting
- 14:40those elements coming down. So we're
- 14:43cutting through these walls. So, what
- 14:45we've identified there are essentially
- 14:47all of our walls and where we're going
- 14:49to be cutting through a wall and where
- 14:50we want to show almost a black solid
- 14:52wall. Now, very similar in the last
- 14:54lesson where we talked about in floor
- 14:56plan. Going to head over to the right
- 14:57hand side here. We're going to do a
- 14:58style panel. I'm going to change the
- 15:00wall thicknesses to the same as what we
- 15:01did in the in the floor plan, which you
- 15:04can then very conveniently just flick to
- 15:06the floor plan. You can go in here and
- 15:09you can select whatever that was. So,
- 15:11it's a 0.3 and then we can start drawing
- 15:13our walls. So you'll be able to see here
- 15:15that we can start drawing them and just
- 15:18very crudely I'm just going to start
- 15:19copying them across and I will start
- 15:21editing them in a minute. Now we have
- 15:23those kind of elements defined. What I'm
- 15:26now going to do is take this slope
- 15:30and start identifying these level
- 15:31changes. So I'm going to actually copy
- 15:34some of these elements here. So if we
- 15:36know that this is kind of like our
- 15:37ground level that's coming across here.
- 15:42In fact, I'm just going to draw that as
- 15:45a solid line to identify our ground
- 15:48level. We then have this lower ground
- 15:50level. And I'll draw these in a minute
- 15:51with proper FFLs.
- 15:54And then I would suggest that our then
- 15:58upper ground level is probably this one
- 16:01here. So, we've got these kind of
- 16:03intermediate level changes as we go up.
- 16:05But to fundamentally identify the three
- 16:07levels, that's what we're looking at,
- 16:09those three. Now, the way that I'm going
- 16:10to do this now is I'm basically going to
- 16:12copy across. I'm going to select those
- 16:15items. I'm going to then select the
- 16:17geometry so that we have an idea of
- 16:19where the uh the kind of roof is going
- 16:22to land. In fact, I'm not going to
- 16:23select the ground bit, but I'm going to
- 16:24select
- 16:27the roof along here. So, we then have
- 16:30our kind of heights, our floor to
- 16:31ceiling heights in section.
- 16:34And then I'm going to copy that down to
- 16:37roughly
- 16:40the height that we want. So use So to
- 16:43draw the floors, I'm going to use the
- 16:45wall again. Got a new floor
- 16:50item. Then going to draw that. So that's
- 16:52our main ground floor. I'm going to just
- 16:55clear the grids and draw a new grid to
- 17:00identify almost where that level starts
- 17:02to change. So at the point of the
- 17:04section line, it changes there.
- 17:09That's where it steps down to the lower
- 17:11point.
- 17:13And then roughly there is where it then
- 17:17steps back up into this zone here.
- 17:19That's our two ground and lower ground
- 17:22levels. So this is fundamentally the
- 17:24level changes. So the rooms that are
- 17:26stepping down and then we can pull these
- 17:30down with us.
- 17:35So that you can see then how
- 17:37fundamentally each workshop is almost
- 17:39stepping up to a higher level which
- 17:42we're then going to call the um
- 17:45the FFL the upper ground floor level
- 17:48FFL. Now, in order to draw the FFL
- 17:51levels, we can head over to the blocks
- 17:53and we can just call it um level. So, if
- 17:57we type in level, in fact, we'll go over
- 17:59to level library.
- 18:04You can see here we've got the elevation
- 18:06line, which we can copy in.
- 18:10I'm just going to pull that into space.
- 18:12Now, what you can do, you can either
- 18:14then go in and edit that block, or you
- 18:16can rightclick it and do unblock and
- 18:19then make your own changes to it. So,
- 18:21I'm going to call it something like
- 18:23we're going to call the ground level.
- 18:31Pull that into place.
- 18:34And fundamentally, that will then need
- 18:36to extend across.
- 18:41That's then there.
- 18:47So that there is our ground level. And
- 18:50then we'll do the same when we copy up
- 18:53and down to the lower ground level. So
- 18:56we've got here we've got an upper
- 18:57ground. We got an a ground level. And
- 18:59then we've got a lower ground level. So
- 19:02that's our level changes. That's where
- 19:04the building is stepping up and stepping
- 19:06down. And that'll be really key to
- 19:08identifying this insection. Now I'm just
- 19:11going to spend a bit of time drawing in
- 19:12some of the ceilings that will follow
- 19:15along there.
- 19:18That will follow along there.
- 19:21And if we use once again our kind of
- 19:23grid lines, we can then see that it
- 19:25almost steps up at that point. So we're
- 19:28then going to copy that
- 19:31up. So we have a very generous if we
- 19:34just dimension that very generous 6 and
- 19:361/2 m height floor to ceiling height
- 19:38space for the gallery which is really
- 19:42really great space and it will step down
- 19:44here at this other end to this lower
- 19:47cafe level and so just to quickly fast
- 19:50forward to some of the detail that I've
- 19:52added into these spaces given it a bit
- 19:54of a perspective so the way that just to
- 19:56give it a bit of perspective I've given
- 19:58it like an angle um I've added in the
- 20:01windows Now to show this window here, um
- 20:06I've identified
- 20:08a reception desk with a kind of uh mid
- 20:11height partition with a window up this
- 20:13high level here with some gallery space
- 20:15here as shown all in the floor plan. But
- 20:18this is just fast forwarding copying
- 20:19some of these elements down um obviously
- 20:22as that is kind of cut behind that
- 20:24section line. So you'll be able to see
- 20:25that element. Um, and just using the
- 20:28kind of detail lines, I've drawn in some
- 20:31of uh the elements. And now that we've
- 20:33got at this point, we can then select
- 20:36these two walls and we can trim we can
- 20:39trim that down. So then we don't need to
- 20:40see that slicing through anymore. And
- 20:43now the section is starting to come to
- 20:44life a bit. You can now obviously quite
- 20:46clearly see these workshop spaces. You
- 20:47can see the central gallery space. You
- 20:50can see the reception stepping down into
- 20:53the cafe. And something that I'm adding
- 20:55to these sections are these kind of
- 20:57small roof lights which you'll see much
- 20:59more clearly in the other section. Um
- 21:01and you'll be able to see how um this is
- 21:04coming a bit of like an architectural
- 21:06feature uh to the section. And to jump
- 21:09ahead to this section here showing you
- 21:11how we've embedded it into the
- 21:13landscape. You can see here with the
- 21:15form that we've created um based on
- 21:18where we're cutting through at this
- 21:20point here. You can see that we've got
- 21:22this kind of storage space uh with the
- 21:24storage unit here.
- 21:27You can then see the two kind of
- 21:29adjacent corridors. You can see the work
- 21:32space here uh that is embedded into the
- 21:35landscape. And I've created this angled
- 21:37roof line to give it this kind of
- 21:40expansive extending feeling going into
- 21:43the landscape with these fins that are
- 21:45bolted onto the external facade with
- 21:48your kind of curtain walling that is
- 21:50running along uh the facade. And you can
- 21:53see here on once again with the
- 21:54perspective, you can see that we've got
- 21:56these kind of roof light features that
- 21:57will look quite nice u particularly on
- 22:00the roof plan um and also when you're
- 22:02kind of accessing at this upper level
- 22:03with the landscape. So you can see quite
- 22:05clearly how we've integrated this. We've
- 22:07embedded the geometry into the
- 22:09landscape.
- 22:10[music]
- 22:12Now once again I'm going to show you how
- 22:14to use the block library to really
- 22:15[music] bring these drawings to life.
- 22:17Adding furniture, adding people, adding
- 22:19activity, trees, context, etc. And the
- 22:22block library once again will be really
- 22:23effective to show the alternative views.
- 22:25So you can see the plan, the front
- 22:27elevation, side elevation. And here
- 22:29focus on selecting blocks that include
- 22:31multiple orthographic views. um ensuring
- 22:34that consistency between the drawings
- 22:36and elevations um and aligning them
- 22:38across the drawings will be really
- 22:40helpful to maintain clarity and
- 22:42consistency and accuracy throughout the
- 22:44drawing set. So, what I'm going to do to
- 22:46start copying some of these pieces of
- 22:48furniture into the drawing, I'm going
- 22:51to, for example, I'm just going to take
- 22:54maybe one of these workshops as an
- 22:55example.
- 22:57I'm going to select some of these items
- 23:01like the 3D printer for example, maybe
- 23:03some of these worktops,
- 23:07some of the stools, some of the people,
- 23:12maybe some of these bookshelves.
- 23:15I'm going to copy that across and I'm
- 23:18going to paste that in place. So now we
- 23:20have basically the the organization of
- 23:23that furniture already set and in place.
- 23:26And so I'm just going to make sure that
- 23:28that's running parallel,
- 23:30I'm going to line that up,
- 23:35rotate it,
- 23:38and so then using once again the
- 23:41guidelines, the vertical guideline,
- 23:45I can just pick a corner where that will
- 23:48line up. So that's where the the almost
- 23:51the furniture will be located directly
- 23:54perfectly in place in uh section and
- 23:57then I can almost just start selecting
- 23:58these items and changing them to the
- 24:02side elevation, rotating them and
- 24:05dropping them into place.
- 24:08And this would just be a bit of time of
- 24:10making sure that they're all in the
- 24:12correct location. For example, I can
- 24:14then change this to the sidewood
- 24:16station. Make sure this rotated and
- 24:19flipped correctly. I can then do the
- 24:21same with some of these swivel stools.
- 24:25And this person sat down.
- 24:28You can see when you go to the side
- 24:29view. This is a really great block
- 24:34to use. And this once again shows the
- 24:37power of being able to have these
- 24:38orthographic blocks where you have all
- 24:40of these different views and you can
- 24:41almost perfectly replicate your floor
- 24:44plan in section and elevation. You can
- 24:46see here the bookshelf. We can then
- 24:50move down to make sure that it aligns.
- 24:53And then you can of course move that
- 24:55then right click it. Do arrange send to
- 24:58back of layer. So then it's behind those
- 25:00elements. And you could scale up certain
- 25:02items if you think they're too small.
- 25:04And you'll spend a bit of time doing
- 25:06this once again in this section to bring
- 25:09this section alive to arrive at
- 25:11something like this where we've
- 25:12basically just taken all of the blocks
- 25:14from that floor plan, copied them over
- 25:16into the elevation and started
- 25:18populating uh these elements. So you can
- 25:21see here that we've got these kind of
- 25:22work stations. U we've got all the
- 25:26shelving units and and all of the items
- 25:28that we need from the floor plan. Really
- 25:30brings this drawing to life. I think
- 25:31this works really well. And you can see
- 25:33the level of detail in some of these
- 25:35blocks is fantastic. And I've added in
- 25:37some kind of gallery spaces where we
- 25:39could potentially add some artwork in
- 25:41when we come to sty stylizing the
- 25:42drawings. So you can start seeing then
- 25:44the gallery space. You can start seeing
- 25:46the lifts. So we even have lifts that we
- 25:47can drop into place. Um we've got all
- 25:51the kind of the bookshelves and stuff
- 25:53for the shop. And then you've got kind
- 25:56of highle bar stools um as shown in the
- 25:59floor plan like these here with people
- 26:02sat having a coffee. And we all have all
- 26:05that level of detail now in the drawing.
- 26:07And the same with this section here. You
- 26:09can start seeing some of the heights of
- 26:10these spaces and how grand and hopefully
- 26:14beautiful these spaces will be creating
- 26:15with lights penetrating into the rooms.
- 26:18Um these fins will create really nice
- 26:19kind of angles for lighting and
- 26:21viewpoints. Um, and you can see here
- 26:23that it works really well with the
- 26:24storage room. Um, and the detail of the
- 26:27blocks just really add that life to the
- 26:29drawings. You can then do the same with
- 26:30the people. Have people sat down um, and
- 26:34people kind of showing the activity.
- 26:36This little kid looking into the into
- 26:38the room to also indicate that scale.
- 26:40People walking dogs in elevation. Once
- 26:44again, all the kind of activities.
- 26:45People walking through the gallery
- 26:46spaces, walking down into the cafe area,
- 26:49someone stood having a coffee. uh and
- 26:51just add in that activity. Likewise with
- 26:54the trees that you can add in the
- 26:55foreground and background and once again
- 26:57adjusting the opacity as talked about in
- 26:59the previous lesson. To show you how to
- 27:01do that, you can double click into the
- 27:02item. You can then change some of these
- 27:05elements. So I've dropped the opacity of
- 27:08the line and the stroke around the tree
- 27:10down to 30%. You can then change and
- 27:12adjust some of these internal details
- 27:14down to 10%. So it looks really soft and
- 27:17elegant. Um, but you have this kind of
- 27:20overlapping nature and detail to the
- 27:22drawing that really just adds a real
- 27:25strong graphic element. You've got
- 27:27obviously cars in elevation. You got all
- 27:28the people and the chairs and benches.
- 27:31And then the way to put kind of trees in
- 27:34the background is that by managing your
- 27:35layers, you can then draw a kind of fill
- 27:38that will sit in front of those trees so
- 27:40that the trees are kind of masked out.
- 27:42And then what I normally do whilst I'm
- 27:44working on the drawings, I right click
- 27:45and lock that. So you can't notice that
- 27:48fill that's in front of the trees. And
- 27:50that's really important where layers
- 27:52become really key to managing your
- 27:54drawings in the hierarchy and the
- 27:56visibility of them. And I think the
- 27:58trees really bring this drawing to life.
- 28:00Once again, very similarly to how it
- 28:02does in the floor plan in section and
- 28:04elevation. It shows that context. just
- 28:06shows um the relationship between the
- 28:09landscape and where this building is
- 28:10situated.
- 28:12And likewise here in this section, you
- 28:14can see the clear two levels where
- 28:16before this was a slope that was
- 28:18gradually ramping up, you can now see
- 28:20that you've got this kind of integration
- 28:22at this upper point where people are
- 28:24looking out over the top of the
- 28:25landscape. So once again, as discussed
- 28:27in the the mood board earlier on, I
- 28:30didn't want to design something that was
- 28:31going to disrupt the view across the
- 28:33landscape. and instead when you're at
- 28:35the top here you can still look out
- 28:36across over the city of London but when
- 28:39you're at these lower points you can
- 28:40look into the building and have these
- 28:42moments of looking into the activities
- 28:44and so that is the sections and
- 28:46elevations um the project is finally
- 28:49coming to life I feel like when you're
- 28:50working in floor plan for such a long
- 28:53period of time obviously it doesn't
- 28:55necessarily translate fully into
- 28:56elevation which is really important when
- 28:58you're kind of jumping between the two
- 29:00and you're working between the two so
- 29:02when you're forming your geometry in the
- 29:04floor plan, you're also thinking about
- 29:05it in in elevation and in three
- 29:07dimensions and how that associates uh
- 29:10with one another. And and then the next
- 29:12step in the next lesson is going to be
- 29:14really critical to then start building
- 29:16into the style of these drawings. Now,
- 29:18what I'm going to do is I'm going to
- 29:19show you three different examples of
- 29:21drawing styles. I'm going to start
- 29:23applying some hatches and textures to
- 29:25indicate materiality. I'm going to add
- 29:27shadow to add real depth to the drawing,
- 29:30and that'll be really critical. But at
- 29:32the moment, this just shows you a really
- 29:34clear idea of how you can create your
- 29:36kind of baseline elevations and sections
- 29:38to then take it to the next level to
- 29:39start working into them into the graphic
- 29:41style and into the graphic communication
- 29:44uh and the detail you want to provide in
- 29:46your drawings. Thank you for watching
- 29:47this lesson and I will see you in the
- 29:50next one.
