  1. 0:00how to choose a name for your youtube
  2. 0:01channel so i know this is something that
  3. 0:02can create a lot of stress it stressed
  4. 0:04me out when i created a new channel
  5. 0:06about six months ago i'll tell you more
  6. 0:08about that at the end of the video but
  7. 0:10by not choosing a name i probably waited
  8. 0:12a month or longer before i started
  9. 0:14creating content on youtube i don't want
  10. 0:16that to happen to you let's go through
  11. 0:18my recommendations for helping you
  12. 0:21choose the channel name the first
  13. 0:23decision to make is do you want to use
  14. 0:25your name or do you want to create a
  15. 0:27name for the channel specifically there
  16. 0:30are tons of channels that use the name
  17. 0:33of the creator here are just a couple
  18. 0:35something i would think about is the
  19. 0:37topic of the channel something really
  20. 0:39important to you where you could have
  21. 0:41your name attached to it or would you
  22. 0:43rather have a different name for the
  23. 0:45channel is the topic of the channel
  24. 0:46really important to you where if someone
  25. 0:48searches for your name on google or
  26. 0:50youtube that the channel comes up or
  27. 0:52would you rather have a brand name for
  28. 0:55the content so maybe this is just a
  29. 0:56hobby or something you're doing for kind
  30. 0:59of work related but you don't want to
  31. 1:01have your first name and last name on
  32. 1:02youtube be this type of content it's
  33. 1:05completely okay but something to think
  34. 1:07about are you going to be the only one
  35. 1:08creating content on this channel so this
  36. 1:10channel is called the figco our business
  37. 1:12is called the figco and it's not just me
  38. 1:15we have a bunch of content that we also
  39. 1:17create in spanish my colleagues create
  40. 1:19videos in spanish there's several people
  41. 1:21that appear on that channel so my
  42. 1:23business partner and i our last names
  43. 1:25are thalin and figueroa and so we
  44. 1:27basically kind of squish that together
  45. 1:29to create the fitco and so most people
  46. 1:31don't get that they don't understand
  47. 1:33where the name came from but it's not
  48. 1:34just me on the english channel or not
  49. 1:36just her on the spanish channel so we
  50. 1:38came up with name and we use it for both
  51. 1:40the english and the spanish channel is
  52. 1:42your name easy to remember pronounce and
  53. 1:44write if you think people are going to
  54. 1:45have trouble with your name you can use
  55. 1:47it i'm not telling you not to but it's
  56. 1:49just something to think about maybe
  57. 1:50you'd want to choose a brand that's
  58. 1:51easier for someone to remember than a
  59. 1:53name that people are going to always
  60. 1:55right wrong youtube will probably figure
  61. 1:57out it's you after a certain amount of
  62. 1:58time but it's just something to think
  63. 2:00about so think of gary vee so his name
  64. 2:02is gary vaynerchuk but vaynerchuk is
  65. 2:04complicated to write so he goes by gary
  66. 2:06vee sarah adichie always says saradici
  67. 2:10rhymes with peachy so you can understand
  68. 2:12how her last name is pronounced a third
  69. 2:14example would be tom bilyeu so maybe not
  70. 2:16the most complicated name but still
  71. 2:18people may not be 100 sure how to
  72. 2:20pronounce his last name you're welcome
  73. 2:22to use any name that you have for your
  74. 2:24personal brand on your channel but just
  75. 2:26one factor to think about do you have a
  76. 2:28fairly common name is there already
  77. 2:29someone using your first name and last
  78. 2:31name for their channel so a story with
  79. 2:32this my colleague diego has a youtube
  80. 2:34channel about video editing in spanish
  81. 2:36and the thing is his name is diego
  82. 2:38figueroa a fairly common name so if you
  83. 2:40search for it on youtube you may see
  84. 2:42something like this and you don't see
  85. 2:43his content even though several of his
  86. 2:45videos have thousands of views and he
  87. 2:47almost has a thousand subscribers so if
  88. 2:49you want to stand out and someone else
  89. 2:51already has you knit your name you'll
  90. 2:52need to create lots of content so you
  91. 2:54show up first when people search for it
  92. 2:57or think about maybe creating a brand
  93. 2:59what i want you to do now is write down
  94. 3:00all the words that come to mind related
  95. 3:02to the content you're going to create
  96. 3:04the niche that you're in and potentially
  97. 3:06the outcome that your audience is
  98. 3:08looking to get from viewing your content
  99. 3:10after you finish that list the next
  100. 3:12thing i want you to do is to think of
  101. 3:13any other words that you could add to
  102. 3:14the name that add more clarity on the
  103. 3:18type of content you're going to create
  104. 3:19how you're different than others in your
  105. 3:21niche so the word i want to use an
  106. 3:22example today is filmmaker so there's
  107. 3:25already a channel called filmmaker so
  108. 3:27you're probably going to need to add a
  109. 3:29word or couple words if you're creating
  110. 3:31content about filmmaking let me show you
  111. 3:33what i'm talking about so here is a
  112. 3:35channel called filmmaker that has 58
  113. 3:37videos and 35 000 subscribers if you
  114. 3:40want to see other channels related to
  115. 3:42the search what you can do is click on
  116. 3:44filters right here and then go to type
  117. 3:47and channel so here are all the channels
  118. 3:49that have filmmaker in the title or the
  119. 3:52most relevant ones so if we scroll down
  120. 3:54filmmaker iq tomorrow's filmmaker so the
  121. 3:56future of filmmaking you can learn here
  122. 3:59the engineering filmmaker and parker
  123. 4:01wallback so parker walbeck has full-time
  124. 4:03filmmaker so the idea of his courses and
  125. 4:06the content on the youtube channel is
  126. 4:08how to make a full-time living through
  127. 4:10filmmaking so not to be your side hustle
  128. 4:13or something you only do on the weekends
  129. 4:14how to make it your full-time career
  130. 4:17scrolling down further let's see the
  131. 4:18frugal filmmaker how to make films and
  132. 4:20not spend a ton of money filmmaker
  133. 4:22survival so how to survive
  134. 4:24the savage filmmaker the fit filmmaker
  135. 4:27the practical filmmaker filmmaker school
  136. 4:29filmmakers formula the fly fishing
  137. 4:31filmmaker you get the idea so you have
  138. 4:33the two types of words right now the
  139. 4:35next thing i want you to do is to go to
  140. 4:37youtube go to google search start
  141. 4:40putting some of those phrases in and see
  142. 4:42what other channels websites social
  143. 4:44media accounts come up okay so what i
  144. 4:46just brought up are a bunch of different
  145. 4:48youtube searches and we'll see the names
  146. 4:50of the channels of the creators that
  147. 4:52show up in search result so the first
  148. 4:54search is new mac studio apparently
  149. 4:56suggested products google and youtube
  150. 4:59are confused if they should show mac
  151. 5:01cosmetics or the mac studio from apple
  152. 5:05down below so we have marquez brownlee
  153. 5:07or known as mkbhd
  154. 5:10you have your average consumer mac rumor
  155. 5:12so including mac or apple or i for
  156. 5:16iphone ipad or whatever in the name if
  157. 5:18you're going to be creating content
  158. 5:20about apple products
  159. 5:22mary spender so personal brand max tech
  160. 5:25dave 2d
  161. 5:26renee ritchie
  162. 5:28ijustine marquez brownlee jared paulin
  163. 5:31cnet nine to five mac
  164. 5:34greg's gadgets
  165. 5:36you get the idea alpha gaming
  166. 5:38next one
  167. 5:39is how to cook brisket who doesn't like
  168. 5:41brisket so let's check out the channel
  169. 5:42names the dog father's barbecue simply
  170. 5:45mama cooks
  171. 5:47anne's family recipe gordon ramsay how
  172. 5:50to barbecue right
  173. 5:53smoke trails barbecue how cast
  174. 5:56the cook and share so one thing i want
  175. 5:57to point out here is how focused or
  176. 5:59broad do you think your content is going
  177. 6:00to be so if you include mac or barbecue
  178. 6:04or something more specific than if you
  179. 6:06have mac in the name you're probably not
  180. 6:07reviewing android devices or pc
  181. 6:10computers the same thing with cooking if
  182. 6:13you're going to be doing just barbecue
  183. 6:14hey have barbecue in your name if you're
  184. 6:16going to do cooking that's much more
  185. 6:17broad then maybe you want a broader name
  186. 6:20so i just opened up a whole bunch of
  187. 6:22different youtube channels so you can
  188. 6:24see the name that they came up with i'm
  189. 6:26not including any personal brands i
  190. 6:27already showed you some of those earlier
  191. 6:28the first one is channel maker so coming
  192. 6:30up with a word related youtube youtube
  193. 6:32channel so channel makers making
  194. 6:35channels i think that works well
  195. 6:37okay whiteboard crypto so i'm going to
  196. 6:39teach you through whiteboarding what
  197. 6:41crypto's all about hey dominic didn't
  198. 6:43want to use his first and last name so
  199. 6:45hey dominic
  200. 6:46alpha gaming so
  201. 6:48big tough alpha and gaming potato jet
  202. 6:51i'm not i can't remember how he came up
  203. 6:53with his channel name thomas frank
  204. 6:55explains so there's already a thomas
  205. 6:56frank channel and then the explains part
  206. 6:58is to learn about notion it's not
  207. 7:00totally clear it's about notion from the
  208. 7:02name but it's different than his
  209. 7:04personal brand silicon valley girl so
  210. 7:06everything related to startup silicon
  211. 7:08valley making money things like that
  212. 7:10creator economics how you can make money
  213. 7:12as a creator that icelandic guy so his
  214. 7:15name is really super difficult to
  215. 7:16pronounce so he decided that icelandic
  216. 7:18guy is more memorable easy to pronounce
  217. 7:21easy to remember so
  218. 7:23he's going with that
  219. 7:24um how to adhd becca de la plantes
  220. 7:28manflo yoga so yoga for men pretty clear
  221. 7:31from the name
  222. 7:32make art now about video related stuff
  223. 7:35dslr video shooter so one thing i want
  224. 7:37to point out here is most cameras that
  225. 7:39are sold today are not dslrs they don't
  226. 7:42have the mirror that comes up and down
  227. 7:43they are mirrorless cameras so the name
  228. 7:46that he chose for this channel is kind
  229. 7:49of
  230. 7:49irrelevant or not
  231. 7:51up to date i guess
  232. 7:53let's talk money
  233. 7:55teaching men's fashion charisma on
  234. 7:58command this is one i like it's just
  235. 8:00really clear from the beginning that
  236. 8:02i'm going to teach you to be charismatic
  237. 8:05keep productive so
  238. 8:06not just be productive this second but
  239. 8:10maintain your productivity
  240. 8:13chris winter tutorial so
  241. 8:15his name but wanted to add tutorials on
  242. 8:17the end
  243. 8:18sarah beth yoga so you see yoga with
  244. 8:20adrian so you put yoga at the beginning
  245. 8:23or
  246. 8:24at the end
  247. 8:25so film boo so this channel is amazing
  248. 8:27if you want to learn to grow on youtube
  249. 8:28their content is great the name i'm not
  250. 8:30sure the booth part of it film i get the
  251. 8:33booth i'm not sure how they chose that
  252. 8:36coffeezilla i don't really know how he
  253. 8:38came up with that name
  254. 8:40maxtet so the maximum of technology
  255. 8:42you're going to learn here
  256. 8:44think media so so sean created this
  257. 8:47channel a long time we only had
  258. 8:49content for think international so they
  259. 8:51said think media we're going to talk
  260. 8:53about youtube cameras and things like
  261. 8:55that and they're obviously doing well
  262. 8:57today even though they're like hey if
  263. 8:59they chose the name today maybe they
  264. 9:01would have picked something different
  265. 9:03fellow filmmaker so i think i mentioned
  266. 9:05them earlier so hey we're going to help
  267. 9:07you create films the community
  268. 9:09experience by spi so spi stands for
  269. 9:11smart passive income the founder of that
  270. 9:14pat flynn already has a channel with his
  271. 9:16name so they wanted to create a channel
  272. 9:18that the rest of the team could create
  273. 9:20content for not on his personal brand
  274. 9:22and so this is that channel if you want
  275. 9:24additional help getting started on
  276. 9:25youtube with your channel your first
  277. 9:27videos and starting to grow on youtube
  278. 9:29we just launched a youtube course for
  279. 9:31beginners it's four weeks long and
  280. 9:34there's live sessions and a ton of
  281. 9:35information to make sure you have
  282. 9:37everything you need no more excuses to
  283. 9:39getting your channel up and running so
  284. 9:41if you want to learn more check out the
  285. 9:42link in the description below here are a
  286. 9:44couple of additional recommendations
  287. 9:45when choosing a name so the first thing
  288. 9:47you don't want to go against the youtube
  289. 9:49community guidelines so i wouldn't use
  290. 9:51swear words in your content i wouldn't
  291. 9:52include numbers in the name so would it
  292. 9:54be this or this it's kind of unclear so
  293. 9:58i'd stay away from numbers if you can
  294. 10:00help it try to keep your name as short
  295. 10:01as possible ideally two or three words i
  296. 10:04would say the max would be five but
  297. 10:06these shouldn't be five long words so
  298. 10:08something that works that's five words
  299. 10:10is the colin and samir show so each of
  300. 10:13the words is fairly short another way to
  301. 10:15look at it would be trying to keep it
  302. 10:17under say 30 characters now let's talk
  303. 10:20about a couple different categories for
  304. 10:21names so the first would be a name
  305. 10:23related to your niche so this could be
  306. 10:25the crypto dad creator economics alpha
  307. 10:28gaming man flow yoga another could be
  308. 10:30the outcome that the viewer is looking
  309. 10:32for so full-time filmmaker charisma on
  310. 10:34command it's very clear hey this is what
  311. 10:37you're going to have if you watch our
  312. 10:39content random names that sound cool
  313. 10:41coffeezilla that icelandic guy mr beast
  314. 10:44pewdiepie niche with name so this could
  315. 10:46be investing with rose yoga with all the
  316. 10:49people that use yoga with there's a ton
  317. 10:51of those channels and then cooking with
  318. 10:53shireen or you can switch it around and
  319. 10:54have mad fit sarah beth yoga thomas
  320. 10:57frank explains chris winter tutorials
  321. 11:00there's a few more things we need to
  322. 11:01check before moving forward the first of
  323. 11:03which is to see if you can get the
  324. 11:05custom url for your channel name after
  325. 11:08you get 100 subscribers on youtube
  326. 11:10you'll be able to get a channel url that
  327. 11:12looks something like this as opposed to
  328. 11:14something like this when you first
  329. 11:15create your account you should also see
  330. 11:17the same username as available across
  331. 11:19all of social media it's much easier if
  332. 11:21you have the same username for all of
  333. 11:23your social media accounts for your
  334. 11:24youtube channel and for your website you
  335. 11:27may not want to create a website right
  336. 11:29now but you at least want to check to
  337. 11:31see if the url is available ideally you
  338. 11:33want to get the com but also.co.net.io
  339. 11:38there's a few other options if d.com is
  340. 11:40taken and you can check all of this in
  341. 11:43one place if you go to namecheck.com
  342. 11:45it's written a little bit strange but
  343. 11:46don't worry it's down below in the
  344. 11:48description here you can figure out if
  345. 11:51the youtube url is available the social
  346. 11:53media accounts are available as well as
  347. 11:55the different urls it's not the end of
  348. 11:57the world if you can't get the exact
  349. 11:58username on social media or the domain
  350. 12:01name that you want you can get a little
  351. 12:03bit creative here so a business like
  352. 12:05yada an online savings account their
  353. 12:07website is withyatta.com and i think
  354. 12:10their social media accounts are the same
  355. 12:12so you can kind of get around this if
  356. 12:15some of the usernames that you want are
  357. 12:17taken the next thing you want to do is
  358. 12:18google the potential name for your
  359. 12:20channel and see what comes up for
  360. 12:21example catherine manning her channel
  361. 12:23used to be called the content bug and
  362. 12:25people relate content and websites and
  363. 12:27bugs as something's wrong with the
  364. 12:29website essentially so she decided that
  365. 12:31she wanted to change her channel name
  366. 12:33which brings me to my next point and one
  367. 12:35of the most important things in all this
  368. 12:37video is the important thing is to
  369. 12:39choose a channel name and move forward
  370. 12:42and start creating content don't get
  371. 12:43stuck at this stage and not actually
  372. 12:46create content for youtube just move
  373. 12:48forward and know that if you don't like
  374. 12:50the name later on you can always change
  375. 12:52it so catherine mannion used to be the
  376. 12:54content bug think media's podcast was
  377. 12:56think marketing podcast they thought the
  378. 12:58content would be more about marketing
  379. 13:00than they realized it's a little bit
  380. 13:01confusing when everything else is called
  381. 13:03think media so they made that change
  382. 13:06also primal video used to be called
  383. 13:08video editing coach they realized they
  384. 13:10wanted a broader name that encapsulated
  385. 13:12more types of content and so they made
  386. 13:15the switch as well so choose something
  387. 13:17start creating content and move forward
  388. 13:19now let's talk about the new channel
  389. 13:20that i started so if you're watching
  390. 13:21this video it means that we're in
  391. 13:24process of monetizing our channel so we
  392. 13:25reached a thousand subscribers and four
  393. 13:27thousand hours of watch time we have the
  394. 13:29watch time and right now we have 930
  395. 13:31some subscribers at the moment of
  396. 13:33recording this video it's in the
  397. 13:35personal finance space and it's called
  398. 13:37greater than enough so what i was
  399. 13:38thinking when coming up with the channel
  400. 13:40name
  401. 13:40is the fact that i want to think of the
  402. 13:42end goal what's the goal for people with
  403. 13:44their finances and a lot of people have
  404. 13:47less than enough they're struggling to
  405. 13:48get by they're living paycheck to
  406. 13:49paycheck and so that person would like
  407. 13:52to be at a point where they have
  408. 13:53abundance they have more enough so
  409. 13:55abundance was kind of the word that i
  410. 13:57had in my head that kind of not that i
  411. 13:59want to be a millionaire but i want to
  412. 14:00have enough and feel comfortable and so
  413. 14:03abundance didn't really work out using
  414. 14:05that in the name also more than enough
  415. 14:08is kind of the same idea there's a book
  416. 14:10and some other things with that name and
  417. 14:12i'm kind of math nerdy and was thinking
  418. 14:15of greater than like the greater than or
  419. 14:17less than sign and most people are less
  420. 14:19than enough and so i thought why don't
  421. 14:20we call it greater than enough and so
  422. 14:22the profile image is the greater than
  423. 14:24sign and so it kind of gets that idea
  424. 14:27across i don't know if everyone totally
  425. 14:29gets the channel name but that was the
  426. 14:30idea that i was going for it was a name
  427. 14:33that i was considering for at least a
  428. 14:35month before making the final decision
  429. 14:37and i wish i just made the decision
  430. 14:39start me creating content and i would
  431. 14:41have a month's worth of additional
  432. 14:43content and the channel would have been
  433. 14:45monetized a month sooner my advice to
  434. 14:47move forward is to follow these steps
  435. 14:49choose a channel name and start creating
  436. 14:51videos for your youtube channel you can
  437. 14:52always change the channel name later and
