- 0:00This tiny device is placed inside the
- 0:02heart to help prevent blood clots from
- 0:04entering the bloodstream.
- 0:06It's called the Watchman.
- 0:10During atrial fibrillation, the heart's
- 0:12upper chambers do not squeeze
- 0:14effectively, allowing blood to pool in
- 0:16the left atrial appendage and form
- 0:18clots.
- 0:21First, a catheter is inserted through a
- 0:23vein in the groin and carefully guided
- 0:26toward the heart.
- 0:27It enters the right atrium, then passes
- 0:30through the wall separating the two
- 0:32upper chambers to reach [music] the left
- 0:34atrium.
- 0:36Using imaging for guidance, the catheter
- 0:39is positioned at the opening of the left
- 0:41atrial appendage.
- 0:43A small pouch where blood can pool and
- 0:45form clots [music] during atrial
- 0:46fibrillation.
- 0:49The Watchman device is then advanced
- 0:50through the catheter and expanded inside
- 0:53the appendage.
- 0:55Once its position and stability are
- 0:57confirmed, the implant is released and
- 1:00the catheter is removed.
- 1:02Over time, tissue grows across the
- 1:05device, permanently sealing the
- 1:07appendage and reducing the risk of
- 1:09stroke.
