- 0:00Check this out. DBE. [music] This, it
- 0:02turns out, is one of the most effective
- 0:04ways to hit your goals. And this
- 0:07methodology comes from the 1960s when a
- 0:11radio repair man in Laredo, Texas,
- 0:14[music] asked himself the following
- 0:16question. If more electricity flows
- 0:17through a wire, when you drop the
- 0:19[music] resistance, how do you drop the
- 0:21resistance in the human mind? This is
- 0:24what we're going to be talking about
- 0:26today. But we're not just going to speak
- 0:28about this 1960s radio repair man. We're
- 0:31going to speak [music] about Matthew
- 0:32McConna whom I recently had the
- 0:34privilege of interviewing. [music] And
- 0:36he shared something with me that is a
- 0:38related principle. And it goes like
- 0:40this. The target attracts [music] the
- 0:43arrow.
- 0:47So this is kind of insane. Matthew
- 0:49McConna writes this list while he's
- 0:52still in college. He's 2 weeks into
- 0:54filming. Dazed and confused. It's his
- 0:56first movie. He's just an extra. At this
- 0:58point, he doesn't even know if acting is
- 1:00going to be his career. But somehow, as
- 1:03he's sleeping in his bunk bed in
- 1:05college, he writes this on a list of 10
- 1:08goals he sets for himself. Here's the
- 1:10list. Notice that one. Win an Oscar for
- 1:14best actor. That's a pretty bold dream
- 1:16for a guy who was an extra in a single
- 1:20movie, wasn't serious about acting, and
- 1:23had no plan to get to that Oscar. Yet,
- 1:2520 years later, this happens.
- 1:28>> And the Oscar goes to Matthew McConna.
- 1:33[music]
- 1:36>> Now, that's not the weird part. The
- 1:38weird part is he completely forgot he
- 1:40had written the list. Listen to what he
- 1:43told me. Uh, number eight, win an Oscar
- 1:46for best actor.
- 1:49Yeah, I found this when I was writing
- 1:53the book. I found it in my diaries. I
- 1:56forgot I wrote it. Here's the truth
- 1:57about that time. Two weeks into filming
- 1:59days confused. I'm still thinking, hey,
- 2:02this may be a one-off acting hobby that
- 2:04I'll look back for the rest of my life,
- 2:06go, "Oh, remember that little job you
- 2:07had in the summer of '92 in college?
- 2:10That that one acting job? I I'm I'm
- 2:12still in school. I've got another year
- 2:14of school coming up. I don't even I'm
- 2:17not even admitting to me to my parents
- 2:21or friends that I may want to pursue
- 2:22acting. But then I see that and I go,
- 2:24"Well, you damn sure admitted it to
- 2:26yourself." You damn sure admitted it to
- 2:29yourself. Now, that is the line that's
- 2:30important because it explains the first
- 2:32of three things that have to be present
- 2:34for any goal to work. And if you have a
- 2:37goal that has been sitting there for
- 2:39months or years and nothing seems to be
- 2:41happening, I can almost guarantee one of
- 2:44these three things is missing. We're
- 2:46going to start with the D. All the
- 2:48visualization, all the intuition, all
- 2:50the altered state access, all the
- 2:52meditation doesn't work if you don't
- 2:55have these three ingredients. If one is
- 2:58missing, the whole thing leaks. So I
- 3:00want you to play with me for a second. I
- 3:03want you to take one goal. the biggest
- 3:05thing you are trying to create in your
- 3:07life right now. Keep it in your mind as
- 3:09we go through this because by the end
- 3:12you're going to know exactly where the
- 3:14leak is. And by the way, if it is a
- 3:17crazy goal like Matthew's crazy goal,
- 3:20win an Oscar, that's okay, too. Now, the
- 3:23D stands for this desire. Now, most
- 3:27people think desire means yes, of
- 3:30course, I want it. But do you? Because a
- 3:32huge number of goals we chase are not
- 3:35actually our goals. They are goals we
- 3:37inherited. You want to build a big
- 3:39company because everyone in your founder
- 3:41group is building a big company. You
- 3:43want the perfect body, the impressive
- 3:45house, the blue check mark, whatever it
- 3:47is, because somewhere along the way
- 3:49someone told you that this is how you
- 3:52say I'm there. But that's not desire.
- 3:55That's programming. And I'm not saying a
- 3:58promotion or the company or the house is
- 4:00bad. I'm saying you have to know who
- 4:04chose it. Now, Matthew's goal was almost
- 4:06too ridiculous to admit. He couldn't
- 4:08tell his parents. He couldn't tell his
- 4:10friends. He wasn't even calling himself
- 4:13an actor yet. But sitting alone on that
- 4:16top bunk, something in him knew. That's
- 4:19real desire. The author Joe Vital once
- 4:22said, "A goodal should scare you a
- 4:24little and excite you a lot." I think
- 4:26that ratio is important. about 90%
- 4:29excitement, 10% fear. If there is no
- 4:32fear, the goal might be too small. It
- 4:35doesn't demand that you become anyone
- 4:37new. But if it's all fear and no
- 4:40excitement, maybe it's not your goal.
- 4:43Maybe you're trying to win a race you
- 4:45never wanted to enter. So here's the
- 4:47test. And actually do this with me.
- 4:50Don't just listen to me and go, "Oh,
- 4:52that's interesting." Bring the goal into
- 4:54your mind. That first goal that you
- 4:56picked. If nobody could applaud you for
- 4:59it, would you still want it? If nobody
- 5:01could see it on social media, would you
- 5:03still want it? If you could have the
- 5:04experience of it, but none of the
- 5:06status, would you still want it? If the
- 5:08answer is yes, good. That's probably
- 5:10true desire. But if the answer is no,
- 5:13also good. You may have just saved
- 5:15yourself 3 years of climbing the wrong
- 5:18mountain. Here's why desire is
- 5:20important. Matthew said it in this line.
- 5:24So I I say here, the arrow does not seek
- 5:27the target. The target draws the arrow.
- 5:30Matthew's a really spiritual guy and if
- 5:32you've read his book Greenlights, it's
- 5:33an amazing book. One of the things that
- 5:36he was suggesting as we went deep into
- 5:38the interview and I'm going to put that
- 5:40interview up on my channel. So hit
- 5:41subscribe and follow because the entire
- 5:44conversation with Matthew was coming
- 5:45soon. He said when you set the goal and
- 5:48it's a true goal that's really coming
- 5:49from inside you, you start noticing the
- 5:53synchronicities, the coincidences, the
- 5:55patterns that move you towards the goal.
- 5:57Your brain starts figuring out how to
- 5:59overcome every roadblock. Roadblocks
- 6:01will come. You start figuring out how to
- 6:04jump over them. Desire activates the
- 6:07engine. But you got to make sure that it
- 6:10is true desire. It is desire that's
- 6:13coming from inside you, not from outside
- 6:16you. But that's just step one. Jose
- 6:18Silva as he trained millions of people
- 6:19said that there's a second ingredient we
- 6:22need and that is belief. And this is
- 6:25where many goal setting teachers
- 6:27completely screw up because they say you
- 6:30just have to believe. Okay, but how? You
- 6:33cannot take a belief that you've had for
- 6:36decades and just erase it out of your
- 6:38mind. You see, beliefs have three
- 6:41levels. The first level is is this
- 6:43possible for everyone? For anyone? Has
- 6:47anyone in the world done the thing you
- 6:48want to do? If yes, great. Your mind has
- 6:51evidence that the category exists. The
- 6:54second level is harder. Is it possible
- 6:56for someone like me in the time frame I
- 6:59have to do it? Notice the time frame. P.
- 7:02Sometimes you believe in the goal, but
- 7:04you don't believe in the deadline. You
- 7:06decide you're going to build a business,
- 7:08meet the love of your life, write the
- 7:10book, and get a six-pack by December.
- 7:12It's October. Calm down. Give important
- 7:16goals. Rude. I like 3 years. In 3 years,
- 7:19your skills can change. Your network can
- 7:21evolve. Your body can adapt. Your entire
- 7:24identity can shift. And then there's the
- 7:27third level. This is the one almost
- 7:29nobody talks about. Is it safe for me to
- 7:33have this? Because you may believe you
- 7:36can become successful, but some part of
- 7:38you believes success will destroy your
- 7:41marriage. You may believe you can become
- 7:43famous, but there's a part of you that
- 7:45believes visibility means attack, means
- 7:48loss of privacy. You may believe you can
- 7:51find love, but there's some part of you
- 7:53that believes that love means losing
- 7:54your freedom. And if your subconscious
- 7:56believes the goal is dangerous in any
- 7:59way, it is going to protect you from it.
- 8:01You will procrastinate. You will choose
- 8:03the wrong person. you will miss the
- 8:05opportunity. You'll call it bad luck.
- 8:07It's not always sabotage. Sometimes it's
- 8:11protection. Now, I learned this idea by
- 8:14failing at it. See, when I first
- 8:17discovered the silver method, I was a
- 8:19teenager and my first goal was to heal
- 8:21my shortsightness because I hated
- 8:23wearing glasses. I suffered from myopia
- 8:26and I had an eyesight of -700. Now,
- 8:30that's pretty bad. But it means I
- 8:31couldn't recognize someone this far
- 8:33ahead of me. Now I read in Jose Silva's
- 8:36book about this nun and I still remember
- 8:38her name sister Barbara Bergs and in the
- 8:40Silva system she trained herself to go
- 8:42into a deep altered state of mind and
- 8:44it's in this level of mind that you can
- 8:46actually program belief and she repeated
- 8:49to herself every time I blink my eyes my
- 8:51vision gets better better and better.
- 8:53Loved it. I imitated the same thing. I
- 8:56was 14 but in my mind I didn't believe
- 8:59it. I wore glasses for 9 years. My
- 9:0114-year-old mind could not accept that.
- 9:03I tried adapting, seeing visualization,
- 9:07seeing myself with my eyesight healed.
- 9:09Nothing happened. Still thick coke
- 9:12bottle glasses. And I nearly gave up on
- 9:14the entire Silva methodology. But one
- 9:16day out of frustration, I decided to
- 9:18reread the book. And then I found this
- 9:20line from Silva. I'd missed it the first
- 9:22time, but there it was. It was in the
- 9:23book. And Joseé Silva wrote, "Don't jump
- 9:26the gun." In other words, don't begin
- 9:28with things your mind considers
- 9:29impossible. Begin with something that
- 9:31feels easier. Don't try to heal a broken
- 9:35bone before you can heal dandruff. So, I
- 9:37picked something smaller. Now, I also
- 9:39suffered from acne. Basically, I was a
- 9:41teenager with no dates. Big Coke bottle
- 9:43glasses and acne. But I read that the
- 9:46skin is the organ that is easiest to
- 9:48heal with the mind. Jose Silva mentioned
- 9:50that in his book. So, now I decided to
- 9:53try on something easier than healing my
- 9:55eyesight. healing my skin. I applied the
- 9:58technique in his system called the three
- 10:00scenes technique. And by the way, a
- 10:02quick pause here. I know many of you are
- 10:04wondering how do I learn the technique?
- 10:06Well, I created a video on it. You see,
- 10:08Jose Silva passed away in 1999. My
- 10:10company, Mind Valley bought the rights
- 10:12to his work. We released it as a program
- 10:14on Mind Valley. But this particular skin
- 10:17healing technique, I prepared a video
- 10:19for those of you on YouTube who follow
- 10:20my channel cuz I know so many of you
- 10:22could really really uh benefit from
- 10:25something like that. It's completely
- 10:26free. If you enjoy that, you can check
- 10:28out the full program, all links below.
- 10:31So, I started applying this technique
- 10:32and seeing my skin healed. Now, this is
- 10:35super personal. I'm not telling you to
- 10:38fire your dermatologist and stare
- 10:40lovingly at your forehead, okay? The
- 10:42point is in five weeks meditating and
- 10:46using this technique three times a day
- 10:48for three minutes each I healed five
- 10:51years of skin problems. There's a whole
- 10:54science for it now. It's called
- 10:55psychodermatology. You can look it up.
- 10:57But here's what happened. That gave me
- 11:00faith. That gave me belief. I could now
- 11:02jump on to bigger and bigger things. My
- 11:04next goal qualifying for the US Open
- 11:08taekwondo championships. It was 1993
- 11:11and I made it. I got to represent my
- 11:14country in the US Open. That was my
- 11:17first trip to America. Fell in love with
- 11:19the US and that's how I ended up
- 11:21studying there and studying Mind Valley
- 11:23there. This is how belief works. You
- 11:25start with the smallest piece of
- 11:28evidence that moves it from fantasy to
- 11:31possibility. And every time you hit the
- 11:33goal, your reservoir of belief gets
- 11:37deeper and deeper. Think of belief as a
- 11:39glass. Every time you hit a goal, you
- 11:42fill that glass with more belief. And
- 11:45the bigger the glass, the more your
- 11:46belief, the bigger the goals you can
- 11:48pursue. If you want to write a book, ask
- 11:50yourself, do I believe I can write one
- 11:52page in one week? If you want an
- 11:54extraordinary body, ask yourself, do I
- 11:57believe I can go to the gym three times
- 12:00a week? If you want to build a
- 12:01million-doll company, ask yourself, do I
- 12:03believe I can make my first $100 online?
- 12:06And as soon as you hit that, your belief
- 12:08system starts growing. Your belief
- 12:11system, you see, is like a muscle. You
- 12:12don't go to the gym on day one and try
- 12:14to bench press 100 kg. You start small
- 12:18and build up. What is the smallest
- 12:22result that would make the largest
- 12:24result feel more real? Start there. Now
- 12:27you have belief, Donna, and you've got
- 12:29to tap into the third ingredient,
- 12:31expectancy. Now, a lot of people confuse
- 12:34expectancy with hope. Hope says, "I
- 12:36really, really want this to happen."
- 12:38Faith says, "I believe this could
- 12:40happen." Expectancy says, "Oh, it's on
- 12:43its way." Let me explain the difference.
- 12:45Now, it's important that you understand
- 12:48the feeling of expectancy. And I'm going
- 12:50to tell you a story to help you
- 12:51illustrate that feeling because many
- 12:52people get this wrong. You might
- 12:54visualize yourself with that ideal body,
- 12:56visualize yourself with that check,
- 12:58while in meditation, while journaling
- 13:01your goals. But as soon as you get off
- 13:02your cushion and you step into the
- 13:05world, you feel a doubt. That doubt is
- 13:08the opposite of expectancy. And I got to
- 13:11tell you something. Why does creative
- 13:13visualization work? It's not just mental
- 13:15rehearsal. It's that creative
- 13:17visualization tricks your brain into
- 13:20expecting that reality to emerge. When
- 13:23you get off the cushion, if you've done
- 13:25this right, expectancy has risen. And
- 13:28the more you do it, the more you expect
- 13:30it. And the more you expect it, the more
- 13:32likely it is to come. So, here's a quick
- 13:35example to help you understand the
- 13:37feeling of expectancy.
- 13:39Imagine you have a friend and the friend
- 13:41asks you to lend them $1,000. And you
- 13:44do. And your friend says, "Listen, this
- 13:45is just for a week and I'm going to pay
- 13:46you back." But a week goes by, nothing.
- 13:493 weeks, nothing. 3 months later,
- 13:52they're not answering your calls.
- 13:53They've disappeared from WhatsApp. And
- 13:55somehow they're still posting from MKOS.
- 13:58So now you're angry. Then you get a
- 14:00message. Your friend says, "I apologize.
- 14:03I was irresponsible. I was an absolute
- 14:05jerk. Here's a photograph of the check
- 14:09and here's a photograph of the FedEx
- 14:10receipt and the tracking number. I've
- 14:13sent this check to you." Now, the money
- 14:17is not in your account. Nothing in
- 14:20physical reality has changed. But you
- 14:23relax.
- 14:24Why? Because you expect the money to
- 14:27come.
- 14:28Your shift has happened. The money isn't
- 14:30in the account yet, but the anger is
- 14:32gone. The frustration is gone. You might
- 14:34even have forgiven your friend. You
- 14:36trust the check is in the mail.
- 14:39Expectancy feels like that. And it's
- 14:42actually a little boring because you
- 14:43don't have emotional ups and downs. You
- 14:46just know it's on its way. And the
- 14:49easiest way to know if you have
- 14:51expectancy is to look at your behavior.
- 14:54If you knew the thing was on its way,
- 14:56what would you be doing differently this
- 14:59week? If you knew the book was going to
- 15:01be published, would you be writing it
- 15:03today? If you knew the relationship was
- 15:05coming, would you be making space in
- 15:07your life for another person? If you
- 15:10knew the opportunity was coming, would
- 15:12you be preparing? Would you still be
- 15:14complaining that nobody has discovered
- 15:16you? I remember when I was in college, I
- 15:19really wanted a car, except that I was a
- 15:22broke college student in Michigan. Now,
- 15:24I saw a car I really liked, a Mercury
- 15:26Sable 1989. It cost 2 grand. I didn't
- 15:31have two grand. I needed to save up for
- 15:33it. But I had read the Silva books and I
- 15:37know how to create expectancy. So, I
- 15:40went to Meyers, the Walmart of Michigan,
- 15:42and I bought a windscreen snow scraper.
- 15:46Now, that windscreen snow scraper was
- 15:48about 30 bucks. Still a lot for a
- 15:50college kid, but I bought it because I
- 15:52knew when I get this car, I'm going to
- 15:54have to scrape ice off the windscreen on
- 15:57those cold Michigan winters. That snow
- 16:01scraper helped me with my expectancy.
- 16:05Pretty soon, I got a side gig. I saved
- 16:08up enough. I was able to get the car.
- 16:10This is expectancy. Your behavior
- 16:13changes before the result arrives. So,
- 16:16what is an action you can take this week
- 16:18if you are no longer trying to convince
- 16:19yourself? Now, do that. Now, this brings
- 16:23us back to Matthew. Because after he
- 16:25told me about the list, I asked him
- 16:27about another idea from his book, The
- 16:30Arrow and the Target. Listen to how he
- 16:33explains it. The spider waits in his web
- 16:35for dinner to come. Yes, we must chase
- 16:38what we want, seek it out, cast our
- 16:40lines in the water, but sometimes we
- 16:42don't need to make things happen. Now, I
- 16:44love that line, but I want to be really
- 16:46clear about what it does not mean. It
- 16:49does not mean Matthew wrote down an
- 16:51Oscar, went back to sleep, and 20 years
- 16:54later, the academy came knocking on his
- 16:55door. That man developed the skill. He
- 16:59took the roles. He made difficult
- 17:01decisions. He did the work. He staffed
- 17:04himself and changed his body for the
- 17:06Dallas Bias Club. Manifesting isn't
- 17:08sitting on your ass and expecting the
- 17:10universe to be your Amazon Prime. The
- 17:12target draws the arrow, but you still
- 17:15have to be the arrow worth drawing. And
- 17:18this is why three keys work together.
- 17:21Desire chooses the target. Belief allows
- 17:24you to move towards it. Expectancy
- 17:27changes how you behave while it's
- 17:29coming. Desire without belief becomes
- 17:31frustration. Belief without expectancy
- 17:34becomes endless hoping. An expectancy
- 17:37without true desire is perhaps the most
- 17:39dangerous one because you can become
- 17:42very successful at building a life you
- 17:44never ever wanted. So let's go back to
- 17:47your goal. Which one is missing? Is it
- 17:50desire? If no one could see you achieve
- 17:52it, would you still want it? Is it
- 17:55belief? Do you believe it's possible for
- 17:57someone like you and safe for you to
- 17:59receive it? Or is it expectancy? Are you
- 18:01behaving like it's on its way or are you
- 18:04behaving like a person who is still
- 18:06waiting for permission because the
- 18:08target may already be drawing the arrow
- 18:10to you? Now the question is are you
- 18:12letting yourself move? Now if you want
- 18:14to help with your training in this and
- 18:15your understanding of it, there's a link
- 18:17below this to mind meditations. We have
- 18:19more than a thousand practices from over
- 18:21a 100 teachers to help you visualize,
- 18:24change your state, work with the beliefs
- 18:26underneath your goals. This is my new
- 18:28meditation app and so much of the wisdom
- 18:32of Jose Silva is on this app. But if you
- 18:35want to go deeper into Silva's work,
- 18:38check out the Silva Ultramind system. It
- 18:40is actually one of the bestselling
- 18:42courses in the world in a peak year
