- 0:00imagine this the world's oceans Seas
- 0:03lakes and rivers which made life on this
- 0:05planet possible and are the Beating
- 0:07Heart of planet Earth's biosphere and
- 0:09ecosystems can also provide Humanity
- 0:11with infinite cheap and green
- 0:14electricity everyday Humanity wakes up
- 0:16to new Innovations in the green power
- 0:18sector most of these Innovations are
- 0:20related to solar and wind power however
- 0:23in recent years we've been hearing more
- 0:25and more about ocean wave energy sadly
- 0:28this sector is not actually new and
- 0:31inventions for the effective utilization
- 0:33of water movement in the oceans seas and
- 0:35massive Lakes for the production of
- 0:37green electricity has been around for a
- 0:39while but are not implemented on a large
- 0:41scale the ocean currents waves and Tides
- 0:45never stop and combined can produce more
- 0:47than enough electricity to power the
- 0:48entire planet interestingly America's
- 0:51coastlines alone could generate up to
- 0:532.64 trillion kwatt hours of energy
- 0:56using today's Technologies this means if
- 0:58the technology is improved proved that
- 1:00amount could be doubled with even fewer
- 1:02Coastal wave Farms today we're going to
- 1:04look only at wave energy and how it
- 1:06alone can provide the world with more
- 1:08than half of its energy
- 1:13needs the science behind Oceanic wave
- 1:16energy is simple the world's oceans and
- 1:18seas are constantly producing waves that
- 1:20never cease these waves movement can be
- 1:23harnessed in various ways and turn into
- 1:25electricity it's an Infinite Source too
- 1:28because as long as the Earth continues
- 1:29to travel around the Sun and the Moon
- 1:31around the earth waves will continue to
- 1:33be a viable source of kinetic energy the
- 1:36amount of energy produced from waves
- 1:38depends on several factors other than
- 1:40the quality and efficiency of the
- 1:41technology used to harness it things
- 1:43such as the waves height speed length
- 1:46and density even though these factors
- 1:48are unpredictable still even the
- 1:50smallest waves can produce electricity
- 1:52it's similar to how wind and solar power
- 1:54are dependent on factors such as wind
- 1:56speed and the amount of sunlight unlike
- 1:59solar power which cannot be harnessed at
- 2:01night and during winter while clouds
- 2:03block the Sun and wind energy which
- 2:05stops in the absence of winds wave
- 2:07energy rarely stops and actually
- 2:09increases during winter and harsh
- 2:10weather in terms of physics the oceans
- 2:13and seas have a lot more potential
- 2:14energy for capture than the wind because
- 2:17potential energy is calculated using
- 2:18mass and velocity thus Oceanic waves
- 2:21have more potential to transfer more
- 2:23energy since water has more mass and is
- 2:25denser than air in recent years major
- 2:28improvements in the Technologies used to
- 2:30harness wave energy have been achieved
- 2:32so let's take a look at some of these
- 2:33Amazing
- 2:35Inventions we have to admit the
- 2:37Technologies for this sector are still
- 2:39being improved the basic concept is to
- 2:41capture wave energy using devices that
- 2:43are placed on the surface of the ocean
- 2:45or submerged in the water these devices
- 2:48are simply designed to move with the
- 2:50motion of the waves and convert the
- 2:52kinetic energy of the waves into
- 2:54mechanical energy which is turned into
- 2:56electricity via generators these devices
- 2:59which are placed in groups represent
- 3:01what are called wave energy Farms that
- 3:03are connected to the power grid the
- 3:05great news here is that more than 50% of
- 3:07the world's population lives close to
- 3:09coastal areas hence it's easy to connect
- 3:11such Farms to the power grid there are
- 3:14several methods for harnessing wave
- 3:16energy including placing electricity
- 3:18generators on the surface of the ocean
- 3:20utilizing the up and down motion of
- 3:22waves to power pistons and turn
- 3:24generators using submerged buys using
- 3:27submerged panels using oscill in water
- 3:30columns that use waves to move air to
- 3:32move turbines and using floaters that
- 3:34are attached to existing structures such
- 3:36as break Waters peers or Jetties to
- 3:39capture the energy of ocean waves some
- 3:42of the most recent advancements in the
- 3:43field include boys that float on the
- 3:45surface of the water and are anchored to
- 3:47the seabed these boys contain power
- 3:50takeoff systems that convert the motion
- 3:52of the waves into electricity which is
- 3:54then transmitted to shore via an
- 3:56underwater cable other types of buoys
- 3:58are connected to pump pumps that drive
- 4:00high-press water through onshore
- 4:02turbines generating electricity there
- 4:04are also buoyant structures that
- 4:06oscillate and resonance with the
- 4:07incoming waves driving a power takeoff
- 4:10system that generates electricity and
- 4:12there are also systems that use
- 4:13submerged panels to capture the energy
- 4:15of ocean waves the panel moves back and
- 4:17forth with the motion of the Waves
- 4:19driving a hydraulic piston that
- 4:21generates
- 4:22electricity there are also advancements
- 4:24in fixed floater systems which consist
- 4:26of floaters attached to existing
- 4:28structures so such as breakwaters peers
- 4:31Jetties or anything that is smashed by
- 4:33the ocean waves regularly to capture the
- 4:35energy of ocean waves the floaters move
- 4:38up and down with the motion of the Waves
- 4:40driving hydraulic pumps that generate
- 4:42electricity and of course China is ahead
- 4:45of everyone else they recently installed
- 4:47a very Innovative 6,000 ton energy wave
- 4:50converter called the nanun mobile power
- 4:52bank this amazing machine can generate
- 4:55up to 24,000 kwatt hours of electricity
- 4:57per day which can feed more than 3500
- 5:00homes with
- 5:01electricity this new invention
- 5:03represented a major Leap Forward over
- 5:05older smaller kilowatt scale wave energy
- 5:07devices the system is being replicated
- 5:10and distributed to remote coastal areas
- 5:12and islands that are just too far from
- 5:13the main Chinese power grit networks
- 5:16additionally it's being used for blue
- 5:18economy projects that also tend to be in
- 5:20isolated remote coastal areas or very
- 5:22far from the shores the nancun device
- 5:25consists of a semisubmersible platform a
- 5:28hydraulic system power generation system
- 5:31a control system and a moing system by
- 5:34absorbing the waves from the semi
- 5:36submersible platform and utilizing their
- 5:38energy through the independently
- 5:40developed energy conversion system the
- 5:42device achieves a three-stage energy
- 5:44conversion from wave energy to hydraulic
- 5:46energy and then to electricity needless
- 5:49to say this device and other
- 5:50Technologies are constantly evolving and
- 5:52improving however some serious obstacles
- 5:55still need to be effectively
- 5:57tackled developing testing and deploying
- 6:00new wave energy devices is a very
- 6:02difficult process and the reasons are
- 6:05obvious the number one obstacle is the
- 6:07ocean itself oceans are constantly
- 6:09moving waves can fluctuate from a few
- 6:12inches in height to a few feet or even
- 6:14meters depending on the area during the
- 6:16same day and mirr hours apart during
- 6:18both winter and summer the oceans are
- 6:21simply inhospitable and waves can easily
- 6:23damage wave energy devices even
- 6:25submerged devices aren't spared as the
- 6:27current can pull and push the system
- 6:29systems and render them useless if not
- 6:31wrecked Additionally the oceans eat away
- 6:34at everything and anything rust issues
- 6:36are big headaches and steel parts have
- 6:38to be periodically treated and recoded
- 6:40to prevent erosion salty Ocean Mist and
- 6:43water are also notorious for decreasing
- 6:45the longevity of electrical and
- 6:47electronic systems this means such
- 6:49components and wiring have to be sealed
- 6:51in a manner that effectively prevents
- 6:53water damage so here's the pickle these
- 6:55two issues combined mean that effective
- 6:57and feasible wave energy device es have
- 6:59to be ultra strong and rust resistant
- 7:02and the electric and electronic
- 7:03components have to be water resistant
- 7:05and sealed such devices also have to
- 7:08last for decades with a minimum amount
- 7:10of Maintenance or very low maintenance
- 7:12costs to make them commercially feasible
- 7:14on a large scale these issues have to be
- 7:17resolved before corporations invest in
- 7:19larger scale projects that can be
- 7:21connected to the grid do you think wave
- 7:23energy Farms will pop up in coastal
- 7:25areas in the near future and why is the
- 7:27sector so far behind wind and solar
