How Panathinaikos Shut Down Fenerbahce | The Bonga Effect — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Yeah, sure. You know, if you have
- 0:02problem in offense, you need to continue
- 0:03to play very hard defensively and that's
- 0:05this that we're doing. Uh they are team
- 0:08that they never give up. If you remember
- 0:10some situations, they immediately go to
- 0:12trap the ball. It was problem for us.
- 0:14But okay, we have experienced players.
- 0:16They know how to handle also this
- 0:17situation. It's generally good game.
- 0:20There are a lot of players that they
- 0:21contribute to this win and you know some
- 0:23of them and I will I will say one name
- 0:25amazing defensively with Mr. Bonga.
- 0:29True.
- 0:30>> When a coach like Oradovich singles out
- 0:32one player after a win and that player
- 0:34finished with zero points, that tells
- 0:37you everything about how this team is
- 0:39built this season. Four games, four
- 0:41wins, all at home. Second best defense
- 0:44in the league, second best offense. So,
- 0:47let's look at how they actually did it.
- 0:49Quarter by quarter, possession by
- 0:51possession. And Bonga is the thread
- 0:54running through all of it.
- 1:05Saras opened the game by running ball
- 1:07screens straight at Mitloo looking to
- 1:10target his hedge out. [music] The idea
- 1:12is simple. Force Mitloo to step up then
- 1:15attack the space behind him. Watch how
- 1:17Bingham reads it, [music] slips the
- 1:19screen, and gets the short roll pass
- 1:21with Panathaniko scrambling. He has the
- 1:24advantage, but he can't punish it.
- 1:33On the other side, Khalitzakis was
- 1:35assigned to Horton Tucker with clear
- 1:37instructions. Deny him the ball. Don't
- 1:40let him drive. And if it comes to it,
- 1:42give him space to shoot because once
- 1:44Horton Tucker gets downhill to the
- 1:46basket, there's no stopping him.
- 1:54After that first hedge out, the Greens
- 1:56adjusted immediately and went to
- 1:58switching with Mitoblau. But Horton
- 2:00Tucker finds the matchup he wants, gets
- 2:02Grant on the switch, and attacks him.
- 2:07Starting the first quarter, the Greens
- 2:09had problems on defense, and the biggest
- 2:11one was in transition. They couldn't
- 2:13control Fenerbachce running the floor,
- 2:15and they weren't using fouls to stop it
- 2:17either. You can see Ordovic on the
- 2:20sideline desperately asking them to
- 2:21foul. He's especially unhappy with
- 2:24Grant, who lets a few of these go
- 2:26without taking the foul.
- 2:34Those possessions looked like last
- 2:36season's Panathanikos, not this one.
- 2:39This season, they've come out defense
- 2:41first, fully locked into the plan. And
- 2:44what you're seeing here is the opposite
- 2:45of that. Ordovic has seen enough.
- 2:49Francisco comes in for Grant.
- 2:56The same problems show up in the half
- 2:58court. Rotations are a step late,
- 3:00closeouts don't arrive, and Fenerbachce
- 3:03are getting open looks. Panathanikos
- 3:06can't control the game, so Oradovich is
- 3:08forced into [music] the classic
- 3:09three-man sub earlier than he'd like,
- 3:11bringing in Lassort, Hayes Davis, and
- 3:14Badio.
- 3:42Did that solve the problem immediately?
- 3:45No. Watch the miscommunication here,
- 3:47leaving Nicolo Melly with an open shot.
- 3:50The fact he doesn't convert is
- 3:51irrelevant. [music] That look shouldn't
- 3:53exist.
- 3:59But possession by possession, the
- 4:01defense starts to tighten up and the
- 4:03switching is where it begins.
- 4:07Watch how the Greens take away the low
- 4:09post entry on the Badio Sunley mismatch.
- 4:12Hayes Davis gets up with high hands and
- 4:14shuts the passing window while Badio
- 4:17fights to front Sani and keep him off
- 4:19the catch.
- 4:32Coming out of the timeout, Baldwin sets
- 4:35up Yasikvichas's atto. Probably a Spain
- 4:38action. He never gets to run it. The
- 4:41[music] Greens blitz the ball screen
- 4:42before it develops and Lassort picks it
- 4:44off.
- 4:54Ordovic is coaching this one possession
- 4:56by possession, switching one time down,
- 4:59blitzing the next. [music] But the
- 5:00miscommunication and bad rotations keep
- 5:03coming back, leaving Fenerbachce players
- 5:05wide open. [music] They put up 12 threes
- 5:08in the quarter, 11 of them uncontested
- 5:10and only made three. The process was
- 5:13bad, even if the result wasn't, and the
- 5:15numbers say it clearly. a defensive
- 5:18rating of 120 in the first quarter and
- 5:2192.6 across the rest of the game.
- 5:31One thing to keep in mind though,
- 5:33Fenerbachce aren't shooting well this
- 5:35season. They've started at 33% from
- 5:38three. So, some of those uncontested
- 5:41looks may well have been by design.
- 5:43There are guys you can live with
- 5:44shooting it, but not Mellie, Shields,
- 5:47Bingham, or Sanley. Ending the quarter
- 5:50with Francisco isolating Bingham on the
- 5:52switch and knocking down the three. Or
- 5:55immediately checks the scoreboard, sees
- 5:58they have one team foul left to give,
- 6:00calls for it straight away, and Bonga is
- 6:03there to execute.
- 6:19Fenerbachce out of bounds and Hayes
- 6:21Davis and Badio are right there to get
- 6:23the deflections and disrupt the [music]
- 6:25inbound.
- 6:30Yasikovichas started the second quarter
- 6:33by attacking the switches and hunting
- 6:35mismatches, putting Panathaniko's guards
- 6:37in the low post with Klyurn, Key, and
- 6:39Melly [music] as Fenerbachce went at
- 6:42Francisco in the ball screens. Bonga was
- 6:44sitting low near the basket, leaving
- 6:46space on Key. Watch here, the Greens go
- 6:49to a triple switch and Bonga ends up on
- 6:51Bingham. No advantage in the post. So
- 6:54Horton Tucker attacks Lassort instead
- 6:56and gets blocked. [music]
- 7:07Now Klyurn spots the mismatch and tries
- 7:10to attack Francisco. Not sure here why
- 7:13Lassort helped there and left the only
- 7:15perimeter threat, Marcus [music]
- 7:16Bingham, open. Ordovich is not happy.
- 7:20Not sure if he's asking one-on-one D in
- 7:22the mismatches.
- 7:30Bonga gets his body on Horton Tucker and
- 7:33kills the transition. Francisco fouls
- 7:35Klyurn in the short corner and Sars is
- 7:38furious with Bingham again. His
- 7:40positioning on the post up is poor.
- 7:43Badio's ball pressure sets it up.
- 7:45[music] After the switch, Bonga gets his
- 7:48body on Baldwin and stops him from
- 7:49getting downhill. Badio fights in the
- 7:52low post to deny the entry. Bonga comes
- 7:54with high hands and the window closes.
- 7:57Venerbachce can't get the ball inside to
- 7:59punish the switches with their bigs.
- 8:04Bunga leaves Key to help on Francisco.
- 8:07Klyburn finds him and Key sells a double
- 8:09fake to finish. Sodus is still fighting
- 8:12with Bingham who once again isn't in the
- 8:14right place on the post up.
- 8:21Bio puts his body in on defense and it
- 8:23turns straight into a transition three
- 8:25for the Greens.
- 8:27>> FRANCISCO STOP AND POP AND DROP TO BLOW
- 8:31THE ROOF off the arena.
- 8:36Silvan Francisco
- 8:38>> is in a menacing mood.
- 8:42>> And this combustible cauldron at
- 8:45capacity erupts.
- 8:50>> Better not get back on defense even by
- 8:53>> the switch defense jams up the
- 8:55Fenerbachce offense. Baldwin hits a
- 8:58couple of tough shots, but the big
- 8:59picture is [music] that the Greens were
- 9:01solid. Panathanikos went from a
- 9:03defensive rating of 120 in the first
- 9:06quarter [music] to 89.5 in the second.
- 9:09And Fenerbachce's two-point shooting
- 9:11collapsed from 75% to 41.7%.
- 9:15[music] And when you narrow it down to
- 9:16the group that did the damage, Badio
- 9:19Bonga Lassort, and Hayes Davis on the
- 9:21floor together, the numbers [music] get
- 9:23absurd. 20 possessions, a defensive
- 9:26rating of 70, a plus [music] 60 net
- 9:29rating. Fenerbachce shot 33% from two
- 9:32against them and turned it [music] over
- 9:34on 30% of their possessions. That's the
- 9:36lineup that flipped this game.
- 9:49>> Getting the dunker kicking out for a
- 9:50three. Here comes the double team again.
- 9:52This time they miss a wide open three.
- 9:55>> Top fake step in footwork met by
- 9:58multiple players. Get it out.
- 9:59>> And the saw answers with the big block.
- 10:03>> Vener will come again. Bing and corner
- 10:05three off and Yu.
- 10:11>> What makes this even more remarkable is
- 10:13where the third quarter came from. The
- 10:16second unit, Manzukas, [music] Grant,
- 10:18Moglu, Khalitzakis, Roavopouloolis, and
- 10:21Yabusle laid the groundwork. And then
- 10:24Bonga, Hayes Davis, and Lassort came
- 10:27back in and carried on the same
- 10:29defensive work without a drop.
- 10:31Panathanikos finished the quarter with a
- 10:33defensive rating of 87.5,
- 10:36better than the 89.5 they posted in the
- 10:38second. Fenerbachce shot 41% effective
- 10:42field goal, 22% from three, and turned
- 10:45it over on 31% of their possessions.
- 10:48That's [music] depth and cohesion, not
- 10:50one hot lineup. And it's not a secret
- 10:52anymore that this team is tracking
- 10:54toward [music] being a top defensive
- 10:55side in the league. Right now, they sit
- 10:58second in defense behind Redar, allowing
- 11:0098.3 points per 100 possessions and
- 11:04second [music] in offense behind
- 11:05Valencia with 127.6 per 100. It's early.
- 11:10The sample is small. [music] They
- 11:12haven't played many tough games yet and
- 11:13none on the road. But the signs are
- 11:16scary. They go defense [music] first and
- 11:19with the talent they have on top of that
- 11:21the mixture can be explosive. The most
- 11:24[music] important part is the size. Big
- 11:26bodies at every position. Length in the
- 11:29intermediate spots. They look a lot like
- 11:31the 24 [music] to 25 Fenerbachce team
- 11:34that won the trophy. Hayes Davis,
- 11:36Deshaawn Pierre, Bonsie Coulson, Devin
- 11:39Hall holding down those positions.
- 11:40[music]
- 11:41That's exactly how Saros likes to build
- 11:43a team. And tonight, Panathanikos fed
- 11:46him his [music] own poison.
- 12:06End of the quarter and the defense
- 12:08closes it out the same way it played all
- 12:10night. Bonga pressuring the ball.
- 12:13Rogavopouloolis holding key in the low
- 12:15post. No easy way in. Ograovich looks
- 12:18satisfied. And to be honest, he looks
- 12:20like he's enjoying this team. You can
- 12:22see it in how he interacts with his
- 12:24players, even in the tough moments when
- 12:26he's shouting at them.
- 12:31[music]
- 12:41>> [music]
- 12:43>> Now, let's focus on Isaac Bonga. Zero
- 12:46points, one assist, one steal, two
- 12:48blocks, and a net rating of plus 49.8
- 12:52across 83 possessions. Everything
- 12:54[music] that matters about his game is
- 12:56in that gap between the scoring column
- 12:58and the impact. He plays positionless on
- 13:01both ends. He guards [music] anyone
- 13:03comfortably from Baldwin to Bingham. and
- 13:06he's the safety valve behind everything.
- 13:08Closing out with that length,
- 13:10deflecting, stealing, bullying his man
- 13:13off his spot before the catch. And he's
- 13:15an economy player. He doesn't take shots
- 13:18out of the system. [music] He doesn't
- 13:19need the ball to feel part of the game.
- 13:22He follows the plan, does his job, and
- 13:24lets everyone [music] else eat. For me,
- 13:27he's one of the most important signings
- 13:28of the off season. Maybe the most
- 13:30important of all. Not for what he
- 13:32produces, but for what he connects. He's
- 13:35the link that makes the [music] star
- 13:37power around him work and he makes every
- 13:39lineup he's in functional. Panathanikos
- 13:42can put a small body like Francisco out
- 13:44there and not pay for it defensively
- 13:46because they frame him with Badio, Hayes
- 13:49Davis, Manzuk, Yabusellle,
- 13:51Rogavopouloolis. The size they can roll
- 13:54out is immense and Bonga is the piece
- 13:57that holds it all together.
- 14:00And if you put next to him probably
- 14:01[music] the best two-way player in the
- 14:03league, the potential gets scary. Hayes
- 14:06Davis finished with 19 points on 30%
- 14:09usage, and 58% true shooting. 60% from
- 14:13two, 40% from three, four rebounds,
- 14:16three steals, and a net rating of plus
- 14:1946. carrying the heaviest offensive load
- 14:22on the floor and still guarding at the
- 14:24highest level. Switching across
- 14:26positions, fighting in the post, taking
- 14:28on whoever the scheme asked him to take.
- 14:31That's the combination that makes this
- 14:33team different. Bonga does the
- 14:35connecting work with no shots. Hayes
- 14:37Davis does the scoring without giving
- 14:39anything back on defense. And around
- 14:41them, Oradovich [music] can mix and
- 14:43match whoever fits the matchup. And all
- 14:45of this is happening with Wancho,
- 14:47Slucas, and Nun out. [music] and Mustafa
- 14:50Fall barely able to go. A minute and a
- 14:52half on the floor before he had [music]
- 14:54to come off. That's four rotation pieces
- 14:56missing and the team is 4-0 with the
- 14:59second best [music] numbers on both
- 15:00ends. When they're all back, the ceiling
- 15:03moves again.
- 15:06That's how Penathanos took apart
- 15:08Fenerbachce. A shaky first quarter and
- 15:11then a wall for the next 30 minutes.
- 15:14Four wins from four. And the man who
- 15:16swung it finished with zero points. If
- 15:19you got something out of this, let me
- 15:21know in the comments. A like, a share,
- 15:23or a subscribe is the best way to
- 15:25[music] support it. And there's a buy me
- 15:27a coffee link in the description. This
- 15:29is Basket Head, breaking down the game
- 15:32we love.
- 15:34>> Grant trapped, finds a PASS
- 15:37FOR
- 15:38>> OH, IT'S GOT TO BE A TIMEOUT, TOO.
- 15:39>> He drifted off.
- 15:41>> Time out. No doubt. That's
- 15:44>> That's a back breaker right there. Not
- 15:46only 15, but look at how broad
- 15:48[laughter] it is.
- 15:49>> I like it. It will COME UP THIS SEASON.
