  19. 1:27[Music]
  20. 1:35the port of vancouver is the end of the
  21. 1:37line for thousands of miles of road
  22. 1:40rail and pipelines it's the last north
  23. 1:43american stop before
  24. 1:44asia if there is a problem in this
  25. 1:47complicated network
  26. 1:48that slows the flow of cargo the ripple
  27. 1:51effects will be felt around the world
  28. 1:56the port is made up of 28 terminals
  29. 2:00covering 400 miles of shoreline
  30. 2:03employing 40 000 people
  31. 2:05[Music]
  32. 2:07and it's about to be a very busy day
  33. 2:12at the coal terminal two vessels are
  34. 2:14already at the dock
  35. 2:16downtown they are getting ready for a
  36. 2:18container ship
  37. 2:19and two cruise ships that should arrive
  38. 2:21over the next few hours
  39. 2:25down on the river they're loading a log
  40. 2:28ship and waiting for an auto carrier to
  41. 2:30arrive with a full load of brand new
  42. 2:32cars
  43. 2:35like most deep water ports it was here
  44. 2:38before the city
  45. 2:40the chief architect is mother nature
  46. 2:43creating the perfect conditions for a
  47. 2:45port
  48. 2:47steep mountains plunging into the ocean
  49. 2:49allows ships to tie up close to shore
  50. 2:52without hitting bottom
  51. 2:56with 4 000 ships cruising in and out of
  52. 2:59the port every year
  53. 3:00knowing who goes where and when is a big
  54. 3:03job
  55. 3:04that starts with the equivalent of an
  56. 3:07airport control tower
  57. 3:12the maritime controllers have a bird's
  58. 3:13eye view of the main protected harbor
  59. 3:16and what they can't see through their
  60. 3:18windows they monitor with dozens of
  61. 3:20cameras
  62. 3:21and radar stations that cover every inch
  63. 3:24of the port
  64. 3:29before a ship can enter the control zone
  65. 3:31they must first contact the control
  66. 3:33tower by radio norwegian sunbank for
  67. 3:35trafficking
  68. 3:36the vessels are guided to parking spots
  69. 3:38in the middle of the harbor
  70. 3:39until a terminal is ready for them the
  71. 3:41norwegian sun is off brainerd
  72. 3:43but for most ships the goal is to get in
  73. 3:46and out of port as
  74. 3:47quickly as possible avoiding the parking
  75. 3:49lot
  76. 3:50and heading straight to the terminals
  77. 3:52[Music]
  78. 3:58for the past two weeks the yangming
  79. 4:01south
  80. 4:02has pounded her way across the north
  81. 4:04pacific
  82. 4:06on board asian made goods thank you
  83. 4:09everything from kitchen sinks to car
  84. 4:12stereos
  85. 4:14all packed into the 1700 containers
  86. 4:18[Music]
  87. 4:20twice a month this ship crosses the
  88. 4:22pacific
  89. 4:24when it arrives on this trip just off of
  90. 4:26north america
  91. 4:27it's the middle of the night and the
  92. 4:30start
  93. 4:30of the most dangerous part of its
  94. 4:33journey go around now
  95. 4:34and uh stop engines for boarding please
  96. 4:37okay
  97. 4:37the coast here is a navigator's
  98. 4:40nightmare
  99. 4:41rocks shoals and vicious currents
  100. 4:46safety first to help keep the yangming
  101. 4:49south
  102. 4:49safe local navigation pilot larry wilson
  103. 4:52is sent aboard he must transfer from a
  104. 4:56pilot vessel
  105. 4:58to a four-story tall rope ladder
  106. 5:01a slip up here could cost him his life
  107. 5:05worldwide over the past three years
  108. 5:08there have been over a dozen pilots
  109. 5:09killed
  110. 5:10by falling off the pilot ladder
  111. 5:16the yangming south has survived wicked
  112. 5:18pacific storms
  113. 5:19that threatened to knock her off
  114. 5:20schedule it's now up to larry
  115. 5:24to make sure she survives the last leg
  116. 5:26of her voyage
  117. 5:27the ship will be approaching first
  118. 5:29narrows at 5 15
  119. 5:32and we'll have 1.4 knots of flood tide
  120. 5:34behind us
  121. 5:39[Music]
  122. 5:49the challenge now is to get her slowed
  123. 5:51down we're doing
  124. 5:52almost nine knots with a tie behind us
  125. 5:54we've got 45 000 tons of ship
  126. 5:56stuff engine we're uh just about half a
  127. 5:59mile from the dock
  128. 6:00under the bridge they still need to get
  129. 6:02to the terminal son spirit of the eight
  130. 6:04let's switch down to 15.
  131. 6:09tugs at either end either into the dock
  132. 6:13a little white mark on the dock this
  133. 6:15side of the containers that's our
  134. 6:17bridge mark basically a parking spot
  135. 6:20that will allow
  136. 6:21cranes and big equipment to access the
  137. 6:23containers
  138. 6:24if you get too close let me know uh
  139. 6:28stop stop
  140. 6:35two weeks eight hours and 27 minutes
  141. 6:38after leaving asia
  142. 6:39the yangming south is secured we call
  143. 6:42containers cans
  144. 6:44on this ship there's probably 3 000 cans
  145. 6:46total if it's fully loaded
  146. 6:49the ship is now in the hands of the
  147. 6:51container terminals
  148. 6:53carrie liggy
  149. 6:56there's huge consequences if we don't do
  150. 6:58the job that we're supposed to do
  151. 7:00and our responsibility is to get it out
  152. 7:01within the time that we have allotted to
  153. 7:03get it on to its next protocol
  154. 7:07with just eight hours to move 340
  155. 7:09containers
  156. 7:10off the ship and load 200 new cans the
  157. 7:13terminal
  158. 7:14must run with precision and so as far as
  159. 7:16we're concerned we can be able to handle
  160. 7:17that cargo
  161. 7:18the movement of each container is
  162. 7:20coordinated in the central control room
  163. 7:23these guys are the guys that are
  164. 7:25watching the day-to-day operations
  165. 7:26they've got the technology that monitors
  166. 7:28everything that we're doing out there
  167. 7:31[Music]
  168. 7:34the stars of the show are the three
  169. 7:37gantry cranes
  170. 7:39each more than 10 stories tall
  171. 7:42their long arms can reach across the
  172. 7:44widest ships
  173. 7:46in the world
  174. 7:47[Music]
  175. 7:51for the crane operators success is
  176. 7:54measured and moves per four-hour shift
  177. 8:01each one of these containers can weigh
  178. 8:03as much as 50 tons
  179. 8:05and could be worth millions of dollars
  180. 8:08to make the departure deadline
  181. 8:12crane has less than a minute per
  182. 8:13container to lift
  183. 8:16swing and drop
  184. 8:20540 moves are planned for the yang ming
  185. 8:23south today
  186. 8:24but there is already a potential problem
  187. 8:27the weather forecast at the port
  188. 8:29is calling for high winds
  189. 8:32the sirens will go off and it'll start
  190. 8:34beeping when the wind
  191. 8:36gusts goes over you know 35 miles an
  192. 8:38hour
  193. 8:40too much wind could send the container
  194. 8:42swinging or worse spinning
  195. 8:44making it impossible to lift and lower
  196. 8:47onto the trucks
  197. 8:49if the wind gets any stronger the
  198. 8:51terminal will shut down
  199. 8:53a delay that will cost big time and big
  200. 8:58money
  201. 9:00this morning
  202. 9:06meanwhile several miles south the
  203. 9:09maritime controllers have just closed a
  204. 9:12section of river
  205. 9:14a giant log barge is leaning heavily to
  206. 9:16one side
  207. 9:18it looks serious but around here
  208. 9:22looks can be deceiving all right
  209. 9:25this is actually a good thing whenever
  210. 9:28you're ready
  211. 9:29in fact the self-unloading log barge is
  212. 9:32about to knock 12 hours off the loading
  213. 9:34process
  214. 9:35of the mv kenzui
  215. 9:37[Music]
  216. 9:38it's a fair bit of boredom and
  217. 9:41preparation
  218. 9:41followed by seconds of terror tanks on
  219. 9:44one side of the barge are filling up
  220. 9:46with water
  221. 9:47causing it to list ah it's gonna go
  222. 9:50pretty fast
  223. 9:52eventually the logs will let go
  224. 9:55and spill into the water
  225. 10:04[Music]
  226. 10:05that was a good one the bars went over
  227. 10:06pretty far another great day at the port
  228. 10:11with the load in the water small tugs
  229. 10:14start moving logs around
  230. 10:16sorting them by size and tight once the
  231. 10:19logs hit the water
  232. 10:20they're bundled up they're bagged in a
  233. 10:22boom and then the
  234. 10:24tug company brings them down alongside
  235. 10:26the ship
  236. 10:33it's up to scott petrie to make sure the
  237. 10:36ship is loaded correctly
  238. 10:38hey gary there's movement up a bit on
  239. 10:40the tour
  240. 10:41the customer in japan wants only certain
  241. 10:43sizes
  242. 10:44and certain species of logs so it's
  243. 10:47level
  244. 10:49okay move up a little bit
  245. 10:50[Music]
  246. 10:55i'm about to get hit here there we go oh
  247. 10:58we're okay
  248. 10:59that's okay gary you missed me
  249. 11:02[Music]
  250. 11:05if this looks dangerous it is
  251. 11:09you can crush somebody really easily
  252. 11:10right each one of those bundles swinging
  253. 11:13through the air
  254. 11:14weighs as much as a rail car keep going
  255. 11:18if one of the cables lets go the logs
  256. 11:21will spill
  257. 11:22everywhere you're okay gary scott can't
  258. 11:25afford to waste time
  259. 11:26but he can't afford to rush and put
  260. 11:28lives in danger
  261. 11:30[Music]
  262. 11:35back downtown a half dozen ships are
  263. 11:38parked and waiting to dock
  264. 11:40a cruise ship is heading to its terminal
  265. 11:43and the yangming
  266. 11:44south is already well into its day at
  267. 11:46the container terminal
  268. 11:49earlier wind was threatening to shut
  269. 11:52down the loading
  270. 11:53but for now the cranes are still
  271. 11:56swinging
  272. 11:56[Applause]
  273. 11:57the wind speeds have dropped off and the
  274. 11:59pace on the dock
  275. 12:00has been cranked up
  276. 12:04the giant cranes are moved on rails up
  277. 12:06the terminal
  278. 12:07to reach new stacks of containers and
  279. 12:10just when things look like they are
  280. 12:12running perfectly
  281. 12:13we've got a whole track record coming in
  282. 12:15carrie is about to get hit
  283. 12:16with a new problem all we have is cn
  284. 12:19cargo on
  285. 12:20on site and we got to get it on the rail
  286. 12:24the railway is supposed to send a new
  287. 12:26train here every four hours
  288. 12:28but this morning a problem on the line
  289. 12:31means those cars didn't show up
  290. 12:33carrie must now scramble to keep up if
  291. 12:36that rail car doesn't get to us in time
  292. 12:38we can't load it to the ship
  293. 12:40and the same responsibility applies to
  294. 12:42us if we don't get that container off
  295. 12:43that ship
  296. 12:44and onto that rail car that could mean
  297. 12:46that that container doesn't get to its
  298. 12:48destination when it's required
  299. 12:49in terms of time
  300. 12:52the ship's departure time is in jeopardy
  301. 12:56the captain may now face a tough choice
  302. 13:00wait for the missing cargo or leave
  303. 13:03without it
  304. 13:06at the container terminal half the load
  305. 13:09is off the ship
  306. 13:11strong winds that could have shut the
  307. 13:12terminal down
  308. 13:14are no longer an issue but a new problem
  309. 13:18has cropped up the yangming south has
  310. 13:21been in port now for almost six hours
  311. 13:24it's scheduled to leave in two hours
  312. 13:26[Music]
  313. 13:28cargo has been arriving by truck all
  314. 13:30afternoon
  315. 13:31but a problem on the main rail link into
  316. 13:33the port has choked off
  317. 13:34train traffic and then we just ran out
  318. 13:36of cargo the crew at the terminal is
  319. 13:38worried
  320. 13:39containers bound for the yangming south
  321. 13:42may be stuck on a rail siding somewhere
  322. 13:44malfunctioned with the railways engine
  323. 13:47offsite here
  324. 13:48it could delay the ship's departure but
  325. 13:51when the crew
  326. 13:52checks the loading plan they catch a
  327. 13:54lucky break
  328. 13:56none of the containers on the broken
  329. 13:58down train were bound for the yang ming
  330. 14:01the ship in tomorrow does need those
  331. 14:03containers
  332. 14:04kerry has a little breathing room but he
  333. 14:08still needs that train problem
  334. 14:09fixed fast so looking at 20 30 finish
  335. 14:12and sailing at 2100
  336. 14:13okay when the departure time does roll
  337. 14:17around
  338. 14:18the yangming is still at the dock the
  339. 14:21gantry cranes are still going strong
  340. 14:24but kerry isn't upset the ship's captain
  341. 14:27has been asked if he wants to take on
  342. 14:29some extra last-minute cargo
  343. 14:31a process that should take about four
  344. 14:34hours
  345. 14:35it's not uncommon for us to have a
  346. 14:36situation where the customer
  347. 14:38has an opportunity to load extra cargo
  348. 14:41extra cargo is extra revenue for them
  349. 14:43it's extra revenue for us
  350. 14:46back at the logging terminal the money
  351. 14:48man is paul gallant
  352. 14:51he's also trying to squeeze as much
  353. 14:53cargo on his ship
  354. 14:55as possible i'll talk to the mate yeah
  355. 14:57wasted space on a vessel
  356. 14:59is wasted money as the eyes and ears of
  357. 15:03the asian company he's delivering to
  358. 15:06if there's a problem or a delay paul
  359. 15:09needs to know about it the customer
  360. 15:13expects us to get it
  361. 15:14in and out as quickly and as efficiently
  362. 15:16as possible
  363. 15:18keeping the logs moving quickly from the
  364. 15:20river to one of the ship's five holds
  365. 15:22will keep the mv kansui on schedule
  366. 15:28it all hinges on the crane operator the
  367. 15:31crane driver can't see down to the water
  368. 15:34side i have to take my signals from
  369. 15:36my foreman it makes it real difficult
  370. 15:39sometimes
  371. 15:40[Music]
  372. 15:42and then when it comes into the hatch
  373. 15:44the hatch foreman takes over
  374. 15:46and stows the cargo so he'll actually uh
  375. 15:48tell the crane driver where to put it
  376. 15:50and
  377. 15:51signal to him how to put it in the hatch
  378. 15:54once in the ship
  379. 15:55bundles need to be released
  380. 15:58and the load needs to settle go down the
  381. 16:01hatch with the ratchet cutters
  382. 16:04and we cut every band
  383. 16:07the holds are filling up but the mv
  384. 16:09kenzui
  385. 16:10isn't even close to being fully loaded
  386. 16:13to close the hatch covers and then we go
  387. 16:15on top
  388. 16:16and these lids here will close down and
  389. 16:18then they raise these
  390. 16:19popsicle statues here so they act as a
  391. 16:21wall for the on-deck cargo
  392. 16:23and then we'll go right off right up to
  393. 16:25the bottom of the crane the shipping
  394. 16:26company
  395. 16:27wants to take as much cargo as possible
  396. 16:30so
  397. 16:30nearly half the load will be stacked on
  398. 16:34deck
  399. 16:37[Music]
  400. 16:45no two loads are the same this is where
  401. 16:48experience
  402. 16:49comes in you know we're starting to get
  403. 16:50a port list two top heavy
  404. 16:53and the ship could capsize at sea paul
  405. 16:57needs to be ready to fix any problems
  406. 16:59fast
  407. 16:59come on boys keep pulling the slack up
  408. 17:01let's go
  409. 17:05the mv kenzui is nearly ready to sail
  410. 17:08one more tony then come on get the
  411. 17:11lashing block we gotta get that off
  412. 17:14the crew has managed to squeeze on a
  413. 17:15pretty big load but before she can leave
  414. 17:18the dock
  415. 17:18the ship must get approval from the
  416. 17:20coast guard
  417. 17:23so one and two are fully lashed with

  423. 17:33let her see it's kind of stressful for

  440. 18:07the inspector measures how much time it

  565. 23:48back at the ship the offload is about
  566. 23:51half complete
  567. 23:52but the crew has just spotted a problem
  568. 23:55a falling tide means the water levels in
  569. 23:58the port have dropped
  570. 23:59the ship is sitting lower at the dock
  571. 24:02and the car ramp is now dangerously
  572. 24:04close to hanging up
  573. 24:06on a steel bullard what we don't want
  574. 24:09is the uh the ramp to hit this part here
  575. 24:13the baller because then it'll screw up
  576. 24:14the ramp
  577. 24:15and we'll have to stop the operation
  578. 24:17while we fix it jamie needs to turn up
  579. 24:19the speed
  580. 24:20to try to outrun the falling tie close
  581. 24:23the door

  587. 24:39the final hurdle is a coast guard
  588. 24:41inspection and
  589. 24:42roll test to check stability get it
  590. 24:44rockin
  591. 24:46the ship was rocked from side to side
  592. 24:48the coast guard timed how long it took
  593. 24:50to stabilize
  594. 24:52what'd you get if the ship fails the
  595. 24:54test
  596. 24:55some cargo will be removed costing the
  597. 24:58ship
  598. 24:58its departure time so it would at least
  599. 25:01be another day
  600. 25:02and certainly more labor
  601. 25:05by her calculation so basically they're
  602. 25:08right on the calculation

  604. 25:12thank you
  605. 25:17and we're good to go paul couldn't be

  635. 26:20potentially
  636. 26:21damaging it
  637. 26:26the crew of drivers has just been told
  638. 26:28to step on it
  639. 26:30i have to give direction all the time
  640. 26:35and by shifting the offload into high
  641. 26:37gear they seem to be staying ahead of
  642. 26:40that tide
  643. 26:42what happened is with the tide going out
  644. 26:43and the tide dropping but we're
  645. 26:45discharging cars at the same time
  646. 26:47so the weight is coming off of the ship
  647. 26:49as the cars are coming off
  648. 26:51that raises that up and we made it
  649. 26:58but jamie's job doesn't finish until he
  650. 27:01ensures that the vessel's giant door
  651. 27:03is safely closed

  694. 28:56recipe
  695. 28:57it's up to the coal terminal to mix and
  696. 28:59match the different coal piles to fill
  697. 29:01each exact order
  698. 29:08the piles tower five stories high
  699. 29:11they've been created by this machine
  700. 29:15it's a stacker reclaimer it can move
  701. 29:17about 3 500 tons of coal in an hour
  702. 29:21conveyor belts lead from the rotary
  703. 29:22dumper to the top of the stacker
  704. 29:25from there it's a short flight to the
  705. 29:27top of the piles
  706. 29:30when the piles are ready to be shipped
  707. 29:32the stacker converts into a reclaimer a
  708. 29:40giant wheel with buckets on it
  709. 29:42rips into the pile
  710. 29:46in an 8 hour shift with this machine if
  711. 29:49you reclaim 20
  712. 29:50000 ton which is the equivalent of about
  713. 29:52two whole train loads
  714. 29:54that would be a good day
  715. 30:01when i first started on the waterfront
  716. 30:02we used to carry the sacks around by
  717. 30:04hand
  718. 30:04and here we are now loading 4000 tons
  719. 30:08an hour
  720. 30:12an operation this big needs to be
  721. 30:14coordinated
  722. 30:16every machine every belt can be started
  723. 30:18and stopped
  724. 30:19from the control room i put the wrong
  725. 30:22type of coal at the wrong hatch on that
  726. 30:24ship
  727. 30:26that ship can refuse that cargo because
  728. 30:27it's contaminated
  729. 30:31it's no secret working with coal is hard
  730. 30:33dirty work
  731. 30:35the main enemy of the terminal is wind
  732. 30:37to control
  733. 30:38coal dust the piles are watered by a
  734. 30:40sophisticated dust suppression system
  735. 30:45that'll be the thing that'll shut us
  736. 30:46down more than ice or snow or
  737. 30:48heavy rain the winds today are calm the
  738. 30:51dust system is working
  739. 30:53in fact with two ships in port the
  740. 30:56terminal is running perfectly
  741. 30:58they may be on track to break their
  742. 30:59single day loading record
  743. 31:01challenge today is to try to keep all
  744. 31:03the equipment running
  745. 31:11the ship at birth 2 has taken 66 000
  746. 31:14tons
  747. 31:15and this has taken 142 we've got three
  748. 31:18vessels waiting out at anchor behind her
  749. 31:20so we've got to get it loaded as quickly
  750. 31:21as possible so we can uh
  751. 31:23get the next one in behind right now
  752. 31:25we're in the process of loading number
  753. 31:27four hatch
  754. 31:28ship loader one go ahead how much more
  755. 31:30do you have to go in that corner
  756. 31:32485
  757. 31:38the ship loader is tied to the coal
  758. 31:40piles by another conveyor system
  759. 31:42the operator must direct the coal into
  760. 31:44every corner of the ship's hold
  761. 31:46to maximize the load but it's a process
  762. 31:49that must be done
  763. 31:50carefully you can't just put everything
  764. 31:53at the forward end or the
  765. 31:54after end or even in the middle it has
  766. 31:57to be distributed
  767. 31:58evenly to maintain the good order of the
  768. 32:01ship
  769. 32:02or it'll break literally break

  772. 32:12will
  773. 32:14as one of the holds fills up the loader
  774. 32:16is moved forward on the ship
  775. 32:18the machine can move seven thousand tons
  776. 32:20of coal an hour
  777. 32:22things are running perfectly okay thank
  778. 32:24you but
  779. 32:25down in the yard the process is slowing

  781. 32:31one of the reclaimers is having a
  782. 32:32problem with its swinging arm
  783. 32:34and it can only reach a fraction of the
  784. 32:36pile it should
  785. 32:38so it's actually stopping before it it
  786. 32:41gets to its full swing so we're not able
  787. 32:43to reclaim all the product from that
  788. 32:44pile
  789. 32:45so we've got to get that fixed as
  790. 32:47quickly as possible
  791. 32:49to make things worse one of the yard's
  792. 32:51main conveyor belts
  793. 32:53has just shut down we're not having any
  794. 32:55luck at all there right
  795. 32:56the perfect day and that new record is
  796. 32:59now
  797. 32:59in serious trouble they have to get back

  803. 33:14a main conveyor belt has just shut down
  804. 33:17and the reclaimer that was scooping coal
  805. 33:19off the piles
  806. 33:20is acting up machine slews like this and
  807. 33:23it's stopping about
  808. 33:24five or eight degrees before it should
  809. 33:26leaving valuable coal
  810. 33:28out of its reach a crew is off to fix
  811. 33:31the conveyor belt
  812. 33:32[Music]
  813. 33:34and a bulldozer has been sent to help
  814. 33:36the reclaimer
  815. 33:39we have two cats going out there right
  816. 33:40now to make sure we get the back of that
  817. 33:42pile pushed in so that we can make the
  818. 33:44temperatures
  819. 33:45for our layers
  820. 33:50the problems won't affect the ship's
  821. 33:51departure this time
  822. 33:53but it does cost the terminal that

  861. 35:24installing the gangway that our guys go
  862. 35:26on board then they come down to this

  904. 37:15ten days so you're gonna be so careful
  905. 37:17every item is important no matter what
  906. 37:19it is that's good that's good
  907. 37:21somebody said it's like a dance down
  908. 37:23here like one person moves in the other

  911. 37:29good a coordination effort between
  912. 37:34everybody
  913. 37:36but sniffing out problems isn't only the
  914. 37:38job of the chef
  915. 37:40security on the ship is serious business
  916. 37:43and before a pallet can be loaded
  917. 37:45it must pass a sniff test are you ready
  918. 37:47to work

  931. 38:18[Music]
  932. 38:21every bit of garbage must be hand sorted
  933. 38:24pulling out
  934. 38:24anything that can be recycled it's as
  935. 38:27important as anything else on the ship
  936. 38:29the garbage has to come on a week's
  937. 38:31worth of trash must be moved on to a
  938. 38:33barge
  939. 38:34that will take the garbage to a landfill
  940. 38:38[Music]
  941. 38:40it could be 40 50 tons of garbage
  942. 38:48within an hour of arrival the skids are
  943. 38:51inspected
  944. 38:52and the first loads are sent aboard
  945. 39:04one gang is loading all the food and
  946. 39:06liquor and water and whatnot
  947. 39:07reload everything you can't eat in this
  948. 39:09area once on board
  949. 39:11the food must be moved to refrigerators
  950. 39:13on the lower decks
  951. 39:15on a good day it's a hard job pretty
  952. 39:17fast we do have until
  953. 39:192 o'clock to have everything coming in
  954. 39:20and not going out but today
  955. 39:23the crew has just learned that one of
  956. 39:25the two elevators they use
  957. 39:27is broken
  958. 39:29[Music]
  959. 39:30right now what happened is just like the
  960. 39:32elevator have got stuck
  961. 39:35[Music]
  962. 39:37let's try to figure out what's wrong
  963. 39:38with that
  964. 39:40the captain knows that delays like this
  965. 39:43can mean a late departure
  966. 39:45it's something he can't afford time is
  967. 39:47money
  968. 39:48and with the current fuel prices
  969. 39:51it's really important that we get out on
  970. 39:53time
  971. 39:54fixing that broken elevator is now the
  972. 39:57number one focus on the ship
  973. 40:00the single working elevator is jammed to
  974. 40:02capacity
  975. 40:05leaving staff and crew standing around
  976. 40:09[Music]
  977. 40:12the volandam has been in port since
  978. 40:14early morning
  979. 40:16it's on a tight schedule and must leave
  980. 40:18within eight hours of its arrival
  981. 40:20or face a hefty overtime bill
  982. 40:24an expensive delay that could put the
  983. 40:27entire cruise behind schedule
  984. 40:29[Music]
  985. 40:30the fact that one of the two critical
  986. 40:32service elevators has broken down
  987. 40:34has created a backlog on the ship and on
  988. 40:37the docks
  989. 40:39[Music]
  990. 40:41a pair of crews have been scrambling to
  991. 40:43fix the elevator while the captain
  992. 40:45watches the clock
  993. 40:48but by 1 pm the elevators are back
  994. 40:52online they had a little problem uh two
  995. 40:54bags of rice fell down the elevator shop
  996. 40:56they jam the elevator so they had to put
  997. 40:58guys down there at coffee time clean it
  998. 40:59all out but they gotta go and they said
  999. 41:01it was gonna take an hour it took about
  1000. 41:0220 minutes so
  1001. 41:03very happy i would say it's very happy
  1002. 41:05yeah definitely
1003. 41:07with the process back online the crew
  1004. 41:10keeps loading the supplies
1005. 41:11while the passengers start arriving at
  1006. 41:13the terminal passport's ready please
1007. 41:16that way please your nationality
1008. 41:23below bags are now flooding in keep her
  1009. 41:25coming
1010. 41:26and just like in an airport
  1011. 41:30each must be x-rayed what you're seeing
  1012. 41:33right now
  1013. 41:34is a stockpile of luggage from 11 30 to
  1014. 41:371 o'clock
  1015. 41:38[Music]
1016. 41:40on board the ship it takes only a few
1017. 41:42minutes to fill the receiving room
1018. 41:44to overflowing with new bags
1019. 41:50the elevator problem may be fixed but it
1020. 41:53has put the ship behind
  1021. 41:55causing a backlog and a major headache
  1022. 41:58in the back room
1023. 42:01now less than an hour before departure
1024. 42:03the second most powerful man on the ship
1025. 42:06is personally inspecting newly cleaned
  1026. 42:08staterooms
  1027. 42:10beverage glassware and they have a
  1028. 42:12standard
1029. 42:13company set up and that everything is
  1030. 42:16clean organized
  1031. 42:19this is dual boards 15 16 knots
1032. 42:22on the bridge the captain is briefing
  1033. 42:24his crew on tonight's tides
1034. 42:26and route and then about this area we
  1035. 42:30start to slow down
1036. 42:34now we're just finishing up the luggage
1037. 42:35we got a couple more cribs on the dock
1038. 42:37just to catch up on and then basically
1039. 42:39we're just waiting as they come in we're
  1040. 42:41loading their luggage
1041. 42:44we'll just see in 45 minutes if the ship
