how I studied for 12 hours a day for over a year — Transcript

- 0:00hey what's up you guys today we have
- 0:03an important video probably the most
- 0:05important one i'm ever gonna make
- 0:08uh my most asked question how did you
- 0:11do it what was your mindset how did you
- 0:13study for
- 0:1412 hours a day for over a year so yeah
- 0:17let's just go ahead and talk motivation
- 0:20discipline
- 0:21drive mindset what
- 0:25causes a person to do what i did
- 0:28so yeah this is just what uh worked for
- 0:29me um how i did it
- 0:32and kind of where i came from and yeah
- 0:35let's just go ahead and get right into
- 0:36it
- 0:37so what finally caused that 180 to the
- 0:40point where you're here now
- 0:42and the definitely the first step that i
- 0:44took was
- 0:45in physics um our professor assigned us
- 0:49a ted talk to watch
- 0:50and it's about this thing called the
- 0:52growth mindset
- 0:53and in the video they introduced two
- 0:55mindsets the first one is the fixed
- 0:57mindset
- 0:58and the second one is the growth mindset
- 1:00and in the fixed mindset
- 1:02it's kind of like all right
- 1:05here is my ceiling and anything outside
- 1:07of that ceiling
- 1:09i'm just not gonna do i'm born with the
- 1:12limit
- 1:12and i don't want to push myself
- 1:15i'm not smart enough to do this
- 1:16assignment and
- 1:18my boy greg has got me and
- 1:22that's definitely the mindset that i had
- 1:24up until that point in my life
- 1:26was the fixed mindset you know in high
- 1:29school
- 1:30i did really well without studying why
- 1:32would i
- 1:34study when i can get a's just fine
- 1:37but you see when college finally rolled
- 1:39around and it was actually difficult
- 1:42i didn't think that it was my studying
- 1:44that was a problem right i just thought
- 1:46i wasn't smart enough
- 1:47and that was just kind of how i was
- 1:48raised you know that kid's a priority
- 1:51over there
- 1:52so he's probably not very hard working
- 1:54and he just is born with all that talent
- 1:56you can just do it out of the bat i
- 1:58really
- 1:59thought that my mindset was the issue
- 2:03and i knew that i had like wanted to do
- 2:05well in university
- 2:06and in life in general so
- 2:09the other mindset they introduce is the
- 2:12growth mindset
- 2:13it's all about taking on your challenges
- 2:16and pushing yourself and breaking
- 2:18yourself down so that you can come back
- 2:20stronger
- 2:21it's about resilience it's about not
- 2:25waning in the face of aversion you know
- 2:29and it's not it's definitely a paradigm
- 2:31shift
- 2:32to what i had before and it's the very
- 2:35first step that i took
- 2:36was adopting and understanding the
- 2:38mindset in its entirety
- 2:41so if you're not familiar with the
- 2:42growth mindset
- 2:44i highly recommend you check it out and
- 2:46yep that was the first step that i took
- 2:48all right second topic that i want to
- 2:50talk about which is
- 2:52drive motivation and
- 2:55the desire to succeed all right
- 2:58so it's a pretty heavy topic uh i don't
- 3:01know how quickly i could summarize
- 3:03my entire life's experience in these
- 3:06short
- 3:06two minutes or so but motivation
- 3:11and drive the key part that i want you
- 3:13to take out of this following
- 3:15segment is that i don't rely on
- 3:18motivation to do the things that i do
- 3:21i think that if you just rely on
- 3:22motivation
- 3:24um you're just setting yourself up for
- 3:25failure right because motivation is
- 3:27volatile
- 3:28it's bound to change you know what it's
- 3:31raining outside
- 3:32i don't feel like running i'm just not
- 3:33gonna go train for the marathon today
- 3:35that's what motivation will get you uh
- 3:37nowhere
- 3:38no it might get you there for like two
- 3:40weeks
- 3:41but in the long run no motivation does
- 3:44not work at all
- 3:45so i think when people ask me all the
- 3:48time
- 3:49how are you so motivated why can you do
- 3:51this every day
- 3:52like what motivates you the thing is i'm
- 3:55not
- 3:55motivated to do any of this i'm driven
- 3:59to do this and that's a very big
- 4:00difference right
- 4:01drive versus motivation the fundamental
- 4:05change between the two is that drive
- 4:08continues
- 4:10drive can get you from point a to point
- 4:12b without stopping
- 4:14and it doesn't care about the rain
- 4:17outside
- 4:18when you're trying to go running it
- 4:19doesn't care about how cold the water is
- 4:22when you go shower you know
- 4:24and that sounds pretty intense but you
- 4:26ought to understand that
- 4:27motivation is volatile you know it's
- 4:29easy to be motivated
- 4:30to do hard things when you're
- 4:32comfortable in life when
- 4:33everything is going just a-okay but
- 4:37when you finally face challenges that
- 4:39actually push your buttons
- 4:41motivation is not going to work and
- 4:44that's why i rely on my drive so
- 4:48what is drive i have a difficult time
- 4:50defining it in words but
- 4:53my desire to succeed it kind of does
- 4:57and fans of flame inside my heart to get
- 4:59me driven to do the things that i want
- 5:01to achieve
- 5:02my goals my aspirations those are your
- 5:05drive
- 5:06and if you rely on motivation to get
- 5:09them
- 5:10it won't work so how did you finally
- 5:12find your drive
- 5:13i think like i hadn't met truly driven
- 5:16people in my life
- 5:17before you know i've met people who are
- 5:21brilliant but also driven they wanted to
- 5:25get life's full experience that's
- 5:28actually why i started this channel was
- 5:30to share my drive
- 5:31online so how did you get it
- 5:34um i don't want to say i read a book but
- 5:38the book can't hurt me by david goggins
- 5:40was really important in understanding
- 5:42why i wanted to do the things that i did
- 5:46i had this really massive chip on my
- 5:48shoulders all in high school because i
- 5:51was always like the weird kid
- 5:54who wasn't socially successful
- 5:57wasn't particularly liked
- 6:01by other people and i just really
- 6:03remember like
- 6:04hating that feeling people just looking
- 6:07down on me you know
- 6:08like i'm just another person that
- 6:10they're gonna meet but i just
- 6:12remember being like i'm just gonna be so
- 6:15driven that you won't forget me yeah i
- 6:18just always had that chip on my shoulder
- 6:19because
- 6:20i was always just like the weird kid and
- 6:22i just always wanted to
- 6:24do better i also will say about the
- 6:26whole
- 6:27um drive thing that it's not about
- 6:30showing off how driven you are or
- 6:33anything
- 6:34it's not about doing it for other people
- 6:38i would say that it was definitely for
- 6:39me like if you watch videos from when i
- 6:42was a little kid
- 6:43or in high school middle school you
- 6:45could see how unconfident i was you know
- 6:47i couldn't stand up straight anything
- 6:49that knocked me down i'll just kind of
- 6:51roll over and lay there and
- 6:55understanding why i wanted to
- 6:58do better really took me a long time to
- 7:01figure out
- 7:03and i think the book can't hurt me
- 7:05explains
- 7:06the reason for his drive and i could see
- 7:08a lot of myself in that person
- 7:10and i also wanted to share that with you
- 7:13guys
- 7:13so that's why i started this channel i
- 7:15wouldn't say that i did it for other
- 7:16people you know
- 7:17i did it for me because i wanted to
- 7:19become the best person that i could be
- 7:22i got things i want my life i want to
- 7:24buy
- 7:25my mom a big house i want to be a great
- 7:28father
- 7:30i want to help people
- 7:33and things like sitting there on
- 7:35instagram all day
- 7:37watching pointless youtube videos all
- 7:38day running away don't get me there
- 7:41it took me 19 years to figure that out
- 7:45i want to be present with my friends and
- 7:48i really want to connect with people
- 7:50and i just wasn't putting the two and
- 7:51two together i didn't know what i really
- 7:53wanted
- 7:55until i just been pushed so hard
- 7:59because in school my family
- 8:03no family not having a family and
- 8:06i knew what i finally wanted
- 8:10and i realized that i couldn't stop
- 8:13and care about small things together
- 8:17i didn't really wait
- 8:21i didn't want to wane no matter what and
- 8:23that's drive
- 8:25and that's why my my youtube channel you
- 8:28know starting off it took me
- 8:30like five months to reach 1000
- 8:32subscribers
- 8:33when i started making these videos i
- 8:35lost subscribers because i had like 100
- 8:37when i started
- 8:39but i didn't care about that motivation
- 8:41would have stopped me right there
- 8:44five months no growth why would i
- 8:47continue
- 8:47but no drive drive got me through that
- 8:51plateau
- 8:52because you know what after that five
- 8:54months i got 1 000 subs
- 8:56and then another month i got 10 000 subs
- 8:59and then three months after that i got
- 9:0150 000 subs
- 9:02and that's what drive will get you
- 9:05you've got to figure out
- 9:06what you truly want and you have to
- 9:09figure out
- 9:10why you want it and those things have to
- 9:12be really clear
- 9:13all right because when you're out there
- 9:16and you're fighting
- 9:18you're gonna forget a lot about why
- 9:20you're there you know you're gonna ask
- 9:22why am i even doing this you have to
- 9:25remember
- 9:26why you're doing it so figure out
- 9:29what drives you why you want to be a
- 9:32better person
- 9:33and you have to remember all right drive
- 9:37after you figure out drive the first
- 9:40thing
- 9:40i did after that was build strong habits
- 9:44there's a lot of systems that i use to
- 9:46do that the first thing that comes to
- 9:48mind
- 9:49was definitely streaking like creating
- 9:52journals
- 9:53where you track how much you do
- 9:55something and
- 9:56every time you do it you just cross it
- 9:58off and i built a streak
- 10:00that's how i did it in the book atomic
- 10:03habits
- 10:04by james clare he talks a lot about
- 10:07how to build habits and i highly
- 10:09recommend the book
- 10:10if you haven't read it basically the
- 10:13habits
- 10:14are what keep you consistent it's what
- 10:17stops procrastination
- 10:19because when you're doing something
- 10:21persistently you don't think about twice
- 10:23about doing it right
- 10:25you don't think about man should i brush
- 10:27my teeth this morning
- 10:29no you just do it and i've managed to
- 10:32turn a lot of things in my life into
- 10:34habits
- 10:35including studying i would say before i
- 10:38study for
- 10:39so and so every day i don't think about
- 10:42whether or not i'm going to do it you
- 10:44know
- 10:45it's more like my body knows that it's
- 10:47that time of day again
- 10:48it's time to study it's time to go work
- 10:50out it's time to go
- 10:52do the dishes or something i can't
- 10:55summarize the entire book
- 10:57about how to build habits into this
- 10:59short video
- 11:00but i highly recommend you check out the
- 11:02book atomic habits
- 11:04by james clare if you want to learn how
- 11:06to do it
- 11:07but after drive figure out
- 11:10your habits so that's the next step all
- 11:12right and then another thing that i had
- 11:14wanted to talk about
- 11:15in this video was measuring your
- 11:18studying
- 11:19and how you're progressing in your
- 11:20studying and
- 11:22i think on youtube especially it's
- 11:25definitely too easy to
- 11:28get obsessed with how long you study
- 11:32but that's the wrong way to do it you
- 11:34need to become
- 11:36concerned about how deep you can get
- 11:39there's another book
- 11:40about this that i also recommend so in
- 11:42this video i'll recommend three books
- 11:44the third one is deep work by count
- 11:47newport and it's about
- 11:49studying deeply how focused can you get
- 11:54in this noisy world and that's how you
- 11:57should be measuring your studying
- 11:58because
- 11:59we do things to make us study longer
- 12:02when we know we're going to study for a
- 12:03long time
- 12:04you know if you're going to go on an
- 12:0718-hour plane trip versus a two hour
- 12:09plane trip
- 12:10there's different things that you're
- 12:11gonna do i think that when you don't
- 12:14care about how deep you get you're not
- 12:15gonna make good use of your time you
- 12:18know
- 12:19there's better things to be doing than
- 12:21shallow work
- 12:22that you could be doing that actually
- 12:23makes you a better person
- 12:25in the book he introduces a formula high
- 12:28quality work
- 12:29is equal to the time spent times the
- 12:31quality of focus
- 12:32all right and if that second variable
- 12:35is low you're not going to get a lot of
- 12:37work done regardless of how much
- 12:39studying you do
- 12:40quantifying how well you can or how deep
- 12:43you can go
- 12:44isn't easy but i do recommend the book
- 12:46because he does give ways to measure
- 12:48that
- 12:48factor and how to get into the zone but
- 12:51that's my ultimate
- 12:52goal honestly is to get extremely deep
- 12:55for the entire
- 12:56study duration what i recommend you do
- 12:59is figure out
- 13:01where you're comfortable studying right
- 13:03now
- 13:04whether that's two or three hours you
- 13:06know or even longer than that
- 13:09and then during that span don't change
- 13:12it for a while
- 13:13but try to get as deep as possible
- 13:15during your study
- 13:17because that formula like i mentioned
- 13:19earlier there's an upper bar on how long
- 13:21you should be studying every day
- 13:23it doesn't really make sense to me to be
- 13:24studying you know the moment you wake up
- 13:27to when you go to bed
- 13:28because there's just no balance in that
- 13:30you know you have to have
- 13:31a life and you have to have friends
- 13:34and perhaps a bit hypocritical when i
- 13:36say this but i've
- 13:38managed to get good enough that i can
- 13:40study for
- 13:41you know a certain amount of time every
- 13:42day regardless of where you are
- 13:45you should always be prioritizing how
- 13:46deep you can get
- 13:48it took me a long time to be able to get
- 13:50where i am now
- 13:52a few years ago i could barely study for
- 13:53like two hours without
- 13:55getting a headache but it took a lot of
- 13:58deliberate effort to
- 14:00be able to push myself both in terms of
- 14:02depth and in terms of length
- 14:04that formula before high quality work is
- 14:07equal to work done times by the depth
- 14:09you need to make sure that you're aware
- 14:11that the depth
- 14:12is the more important one because that
- 14:14one has a lot more room for growth
- 14:16you know the other one is fixed it
- 14:18doesn't make sense to study
- 14:20more than 12 hours a day at least for me
- 14:23because
- 14:25i need to be getting like eight hours of
- 14:26sleep in order to get focused enough
- 14:29that i can study it for that long and
- 14:30certain amount of focus you know
- 14:32i'm just rambling but the point of this
- 14:35section of this video
- 14:36is that you need to understand that the
- 14:38depth to which you study is far more
- 14:40important than how long you study
- 14:42and i want you to remember that whenever
- 14:44you study so i also wanted to talk about
- 14:46burnout and staying committed to this
- 14:50lifestyle
- 14:51i wish i knew all the answers but i'm
- 14:53not sure what to tell people when
- 14:54they're burned out
- 14:56other than i think you just need to be
- 14:58patient with yourself
- 15:00and that you have to accept that it's
- 15:02always up there's also downs
- 15:05staying committed to this lifestyle it's
- 15:07not easy
- 15:08you know if it was easy everyone would
- 15:10do it but it's hard work
- 15:12there's a bounce between pushing
- 15:16yourself to the extreme
- 15:17and pushing yourself too hard and for a
- 15:20lot of people that balance is different
- 15:22and for me i can push myself pretty dang
- 15:24hard
- 15:25i think if i went even harder i would
- 15:27get burned out
- 15:28to be honest with you and i'm not sure
- 15:30what i'd do with myself then
- 15:32but at the start i did get burned out
- 15:34and really
- 15:35all that i was able to do during that
- 15:37time was just wait until things got
- 15:39better
- 15:39and i know that's not like a great thing
- 15:41to say but we have to accept that
- 15:43things do come with both positives and
- 15:46negatives
- 15:47and that pushing yourself so hard ain't
- 15:49easy you know
- 15:50and it's not desirable always i wish i
- 15:53could tell you
- 15:54how to get out of a burnout but i can't
- 15:56all i can tell you is that you have to
- 15:57be really careful about
- 15:58not getting into a burnout and if you do
- 16:00get into a burnout
- 16:02understand what happens and don't do it
- 16:04again i also want to talk about like
- 16:06your physical health
- 16:07and how i remains healthy you know even
- 16:10while
- 16:11sitting for 12 hours a day and the
- 16:14answer was i was always
- 16:15active outside of the studying outside
- 16:18of my live stream
- 16:20mainly running um
- 16:23i was training for a marathon before it
- 16:25was cancelled by running
- 16:27a 10k every few days around it three
- 16:30days a week
- 16:31there was like a two to three week
- 16:34period there where
- 16:35i lost track of things and i wasn't
- 16:37exercising
- 16:38and man that was physically horrible
- 16:42i like muffin tops almost immediately
- 16:45i think my mental health is just down in
- 16:47the drains then
- 16:48yeah going outside and routinely
- 16:52getting an exercise definitely was
- 16:55crucial
- 16:56in me being able to sit down all day
- 16:59and another thing that was really
- 17:01important was my posture
- 17:04if you like look at those earlier videos
- 17:06you can see that i have just horrible
- 17:08posture
- 17:09and that took a toll on my back after
- 17:11you know a few months of that
- 17:13and i wish i had taken it more seriously
- 17:15at the start
- 17:16but now i do take it very seriously
- 17:20um you can see me i use like a little
- 17:22angled writing stand
- 17:24i have an ergonomic chair in this
- 17:26position in a way that's
- 17:27very supportive of my back my lower back
- 17:31my legs i wish i had
- 17:34made an investment in those things
- 17:36earlier on
- 17:38because while i never had to go to like
- 17:40the chiropractor or anything
- 17:41i think that i wasn't pushing people to
- 17:44be more posturally correct
- 17:47as i should have been if you're going to
- 17:49do something like this
- 17:50you need to make sure that you're
- 17:52physically sound you know you're eating
- 17:54the correct
- 17:55foods and the types of foods that you're
- 17:57eating are all healthy for you
- 17:59and that you're sitting correctly you're
- 18:00getting enough physical exercise
- 18:03because that also impacts your mental
- 18:05health as well
- 18:07so yeah that was my physical health
- 18:08which also plays a big role in your
- 18:10mental health
- 18:11the last thing that i wanted to talk
- 18:12about in this video was
- 18:14whether or not this is for you um
- 18:18and i wish i could tell you whether or
- 18:19not it was for you but
- 18:21i know it's for me mainly because
- 18:24i really have strong aspirations i'm
- 18:27ambitious
- 18:28i want to become a better person i'm
- 18:31interested
- 18:32in helping other people i'm interested
- 18:34in becoming the best version of me
- 18:37so those are the reasons that i think i
- 18:40really
- 18:41wanted to study a lot but maybe
- 18:44those things aren't priorities for you
